Richard (Dick) Eugene Jimeson, passed away peacefully at his home in Oklahoma City, on July 17, 2022, at the age of 91.

Dick was born October 23, 1930, in Hiawatha, Kansas.  He was the son of Glen D. Jimeson, Sr. and Hazel D. (Mullihan) Jimeson.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and sisters:  Erma Davis, Emma Davis, Martha Bauman, and Evelyn Fox.  Brothers:  Glen Jimeson, Jr. and Oscar Jimeson.

Dick is survived by his wife of 70 years, Naomi.  Their children:  Diana (Eric) Beisner of Hastings, NE, and Dennis (Jan) Jimeson of Oklahoma City, OK, his brother Art (Linda) Jimeson of Hiawatha.  He was called “Papo” by his six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.  He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

It was Dick’s wishes to be cremated and no services.  A private family graveside service will be held later.

Tina Marie (Jarrett) Ferris, 62, of Troy, Kansas passed away Friday,  July 29, 2022 at her son’s home in Hiawatha, Kansas surrounded by her loved ones. 

Tina was born on March 1, 1960, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Jerry and Shirley (Knapp) Jarrett. 

Tina graduated Troy High School in 1978 and worked as a CNA.  

She was preceded in death by her father, Jerry Jarrett.

Larry Carl Matthias, 83, of rural Horton went to be with his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his family, on July 29th at Amberwell-Hiawatha Hospital.

Larry was born on July 17, 1939, at the Horton Hospital, one of eight children to Carl A. and Mildred (Davey) Matthias. Larry attended elementary school at Belleview and Denton, began high school at Huron, Kansas, and graduated in 1958 from ACCHS in Effingham, Kansas. While in high school, Larry was a three sport athlete and excelled in basketball, holding several school records for many, many years. Larry served in the United States Coast Guard from 1958 to 1962. After basic training in Cape May, New Jersey, Larry was stationed in the British West Indies, Groton, Connecticut, Ketchikan, Alaska, and St. Louis, Missouri. Larry was a trained electrician, working on LORAN transmitting stations and lighthouses along the Alaskan coast. He finished his military service at the Coast Guard Station in St Louis.

A baptized member of the Larkenburg Christian Church, Larry serving as a board member and as board president. He was a member of American Legion Post #58 , Jackson County Rural Water Board, and Atchison County Dairy Board. Larry married Etta Mae Jacobs on December 17, 1961, at the First Christian Church in Atchison, Kansas. To this union five children were born: Debbie, Janet, Darrin, Tim and Tod. Larry’s chosen vocation was to be a Farmer and a Dairyman. He, with  Etta Mae always by his side, worked hard to buy land and improve the farm into a productive operation to pass down to the next generation of family farmers. They retired after 45 years but still liked to know what was going on around the place and what the boys were doing. Many hours were spent inspecting the farm and the pond with Etta Mae and their dog, Sassy on the side-by-side.

Even the littlest great-grands love to take a ride with Grandpa Larry. Family meant everything to Larry, and he was often heard bragging about them and saying how proud he was of them. Gatherings at the family pond were common and special. He was happiest surrounded by nature, family, friends and good food. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy was his favorite meal, and he got that meal on his 83rd birthday on July 17.

Larry was one to impart advice and words of wisdom to those who asked and sometimes to those who did not. Some of his most often used phrases were "You have to learn to live with a little adversity,” “This is a working farm and not a rest home,” and “As sure as the vine grows around the stump, you're my darling sugar lump.” In charge to the end, Larry left his whole family with one last wise motto to live by as his time was getting very short, “Everything is going to be alright.” And, as usual, he was right.

Survivors include the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Etta Mae, two daughters: Debbie (Stan) Selland, Janet (Keith) Sauber. Three sons: Darrin (Amy) Matthias, Tim (Janet) Matthias, and Tod Matthias (Kassie Fedrick). Fifteen grandchildren: Melissa (Andrew) Mitchell, Josh (Sarah) Selland, Rachel Selland (Cody Holaday), Jena (Shane) Schoenhofer, Cole Sauber (Amber Daveline), Drew (Lindsay) Matthias, Brent (Carissa) Matthias, Jordan (Reba) Matthias, Noah Matthias (Kismet Bowsher), Eli Matthias, Emily Matthias, Tyler Matthias, Tanner Matthias, Mason Matthias, Gracie Matthias; and 13 great- grandchildren. Also, a sister, Ruth Corkran, and brother, Garry (Dee) Matthias, and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors, including a special friend and neighbor, Bill Rodvelt.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters: Naomi Barker, Barbara Thomas, Darlene Clough and Betty Moore, and one brother, Dave Matthias.

A visitation with family will be held at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Funeral Home in Horton, Kansas, on Tuesday, August 2nd, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. A celebration service of Larry’s life will be on August 3rd at 10:30 a.m. at Dishon- Maple- Chaney, also. Luncheon to follow. Larry loved bright colors and never wore black. Etta Mae asks that those attending dress in bright colors, including crimson and blue for Larry's beloved KU Jayhawks.

 Lois Mary Flewelling, 95, of Horton, KS, formerly of Holton, KS, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2022 at her home with her family by her side. She was born December 4, 1926 in Augusta, KS, the daughter of Forrest Clifton and Ethel May (Boucher) Broomfield.

Lois attended Augusta High School; later earning her GED. She worked for the United States Post Office as a mail sorter clerk; retiring after 20 years. She was also a farmwife, homemaker and waitress.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Holton, NARFE, Holton V.F.W. Auxiliary, Holton Hospital Auxiliary, Our Gang (bank travel group), Quilting Group, Widows Group and Classy Ladies.

Lois married George K. Flewelling on August 26, 1946 in Ft. Scott, KS; he preceded her in death in 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Ethel Broomfield; son, Allen D. Flewelling; grandson, Mike Flewelling; granddaughter, Kylie Salazar; great-grandchildren, Jordyn Fitzpatrick and Levi Lendermon; sister, Marjorie Broomfield and brother, Floyd Broomfield.

Survivors include her 4 sons, Kenneth Flewelling (Madeline) of Holton, KS, Robin Flewelling of Goff, KS, Dannen Flewelling of Stanton, KS, Dennis Flewelling (Joni) of Nebraska City, NE; 7 daughters, Carolyn Huguenin of Horton, KS, Kathryn Faulkner (James) of Warrensburg, MO, Lorraine Flewelling of Montrose, CO, Sherrill Flewelling of Holton, KS, Jill Flewelling of Holton, KS, Pamela Baum of Holton, KS, Sandra Flewelling of Holton, KS; sister, Helen Addington of Tulsa, OK; 26 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

John Davis Henry Schwinn of Easton, KS, passed away July 25, 2022 in Paris, TX. 

He was born January 6, 1997 to Herbert Thomas Jr. and Susan (Lobb) Schwinn in Lawrence, KS. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Leavenworth, KS, where he was baptized and confirmed.  He was a member of  Bell 4-H Club. John graduated from Pleasant Ridge High School in 2015.  He farmed and milked cows on the family dairy after graduation and in 2020, he started his own business, Schwinn Trucking LLC  and was the owner and operator. He was very proud of his business and loved to visit with friends and family about his ventures. He also loved hunting, fishing and riding his Ranger.

He is survived by his parents, Tom and Susie Schwinn, brother, Jake (Sarah) Schwinn, nieces, Mila and Genevieve Schwinn,  maternal grandmother, Shirley Lobb, six aunts, Jeanine Murphy, Sue Todd, Kathleen (Tom) Adams, Kathy Lobb, Sharon Johnson (John Swearer), Janet Wise (Jeff Perry), two uncles, John Wise (Tami), and Sam and Cheri Allred, cousins, Sam (Beckie) Murphy,  Emma, Samuel, Joshua, and Anna,  Ryan (Kate) Todd, Elizabeth, Hazel and Olivia, Caleb Todd, Molly (Ethan) Behne, Nora, Aaron (Baillie) Adams, James and Isaiah, Roy Johnson, Candace Pickett, Morgan (Chance) Bowker, Sawyer and Brylee. Edward Ralph Garber, Sr., 100, of Sabetha, Kansas died Friday, July 29, 2022, at the Sabetha Manor. Ed, as he was known, was born on May 16, 1922, the 6th child of Andrew and Anna (Hartter) Garber. He grew up on the family farm Northwest of Sabetha and attended the Berwick Country School through the 8th grade.

Ed entered military service on July 14, 1944 and was assigned to the 779th Tank Battalion. He was stationed in the Philippines and on Okinawa. Before leaving the service, he was transferred to the 316th Bomb Wing. Ed was honorably discharged on September 3, 1946.

Ed had many occupations throughout his lifetime. He lent a hand to the farmers and extended family over the years, and often took his wife and children on Sunday drives to see how the crops near the home place were doing. He also worked in construction, as a masonry contractor laying brick and block, learned how to install tile-you name it, he probably could figure out how to fix anything. In 1958, he started his company, Garber Building Materials. At first, the concrete was batched in a small mixer at the plant, scooped into the bed of a dump truck, delivered to the site, and scooped off. Soon he was able to upgrade to a mixer truck with the trademark red cab and white mixer. He expanded by adding a plant in Hiawatha, Kansas. He sold the business in 1998, but kept busy fixing and renting out golf carts, until he was 96.

Ed could be counted on to look out for elderly friends and relatives whether it was clearing sidewalks and driveways of snow in winter, taking his uncle to the barber or his brother for groceries. If a pallbearer was needed, he often got the call to fill in. He said it was the least he could do, to help take the deceased to their final rest.

Ed married Rosemary (Cramer) Ehlers on December 31, 1947. She had a five-year-old son, John, from her previous marriage. The family was made complete when twins, Margaret Ann Garber and Edward R. Garber, Jr., were born in November of 1948. Rosemary did the bookkeeping for Ed until her death in 1993 after 45 years of marriage.

Ed was an outdoorsman and a sports fan, but when he was introduced to golf, hunting and fishing took a backseat. John was still taking him golfing earlier this year. Whether it was football, KU basketball or a baseball game, if it was on TV, the channel was turned to that.

Ed took great pride in his military career and was a lifelong member of the American Legion. He also belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars club. One of his cherished memories in later years was being able to take the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to see the National World War II Memorial.

In his middle years, he joined the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. When the Masonic Lodge closed in Sabetha, he joined the Hiawatha York Rite Lodge and the Shriners Topeka Scottish Rite. He also served on the Sabetha City Commission as Finance Commissioner.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosemary Garber; his sisters, Ruth Seffer, Rose Mary, and Elizabeth; and his brothers, Andrew, John, Robert, Charles, and Allen.

Ed is survived by his children, John (Elaine) Garber, and Ed Garber, Jr. both of Sabetha, and Margaret Garber of Kansas City, Kansas; his grandchildren, Tresa (Scott) Burger, Matt (Kimberly) Garber, Jill (Mathew) Bachtold, and Andy (Megan) Garber; his 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, some of whom attended his 100th birthday celebration in May with an open house at the Sabetha VFW Post 7285.

Funeral service and Masonic reading will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Melvena Mae Vandervort Ingels, 91, of Netawaka, KS, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2022 at The Pines in Holton, KS. She was born April 18, 1931 in Holton, KS, the daughter of Melvin and Hazel Mae (Wilson) Young.

          Melvena attended Lonestar Country School and graduated from Holton High School in 1949.

          She worked for Adkins Insurance Agency, formerly Singer Insurance Agency and Crow & Gilliland Insurance. Melvena retired after 50 ½ years.

          She enjoyed her family, square dancing and her cats and dogs.

          Melvena married Wilbur Leon Vandervort on May 16, 1952; he preceded her in death on July 30, 1971. She married Marvin Albert Ingels on June 30, 1973 in Holton; he preceded her in death on February 2, 2015.

          Survivors include 2 brothers, Carroll Young of Santa Fe, NM and Leonard Young of Topeka, KS and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

John Clinton Rainwater, 89, of Hiawatha, passed away Wednesday evening, July 27, 2022, at Amberwell Health Hiawatha.

John was born February 25, 1933, in Leona, Kansas, one of four children of Clinton and Mary Emily Sharp. At an early age the family moved to a farm west of Bendena, Kansas. He graduated from Bendena High School in 1951 and had attended St. Benedict College in Atchison. John served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where he was stationed in Germany with the First Infantry Division.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha; lifetime member of Homer-White American Legion Post #66, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1507. John was also a lifetime member of the Hiawatha Masonic Lodge #35, AF&AM, Mount Horeb Chapter #43, Washington Council #2, and the Hiawatha Commandry #13.

He married Virginia Gustafson June 16, 1957 at Grace Lutheran Church in Osage City, Kansas. To this union three children were born: Michael, Ronald, and Ruth.

Survivors include his wife Virginia, two sons: Michael Rainwater (Wilma), Ron Rainwater (Susan), and Ruth Rainwater Licon (Jesus); six grandchildren: Leigh Ann, Tanner, and Walker Rainwater, Allen John Rainwater, Samantha and Alley Licon, and five great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Alberta Jones, Elaine Myers, and a brother Lewis Rainwater.

Services will be held at a later date.

Margaret A. Scholl, of Hiawatha, formerly of White Cloud, passed away Wednesday morning, July 27, 2022.

She was born and raised in Falls City where she grew up and graduated high school.

She is survived by her sister Eileen Kirkendall, and her brother Bill Scholl, as well as, nieces and nephews.

Margaret worked for 12 years at the Brown County Animal Clinic as Kennel Manager, were she enjoyed taking care of the animal patients as well as the Humane Society animals that were housed at the facility at that time. Prior to that employment she worked at Flair Fold Shutter factory for 17 years.

It was Margaret’s wishes that there not be any services.

Hunter Servaes, 33, Atchison, Kansas, died Monday, July 25, 2022.

Hunter was born May 28, 1989, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Randy and Mary (Fladung) Servaes. He attended Atchison Catholic Elementary School then Atchison County Community High School graduating in 2007.

He and Cassie Siard were married in Atchison, Kansas, on September 8, 2014.

Hunter was employed as a Distillery Operator for Midwest Grain Products.

Hunter was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He could often be found out boating with his family or playing pool with his friends. He had a great sense of humor and could always make people laugh. Most of all, Hunter loved his family, and being there for friends.

Survivors include his wife, Cassie Servaes; a son Finn Servaes; a sister, Celeste Pantle, Atchison, KS; a niece Audrey Pantle; his grandmother, Sally Servaes, Atchison, KS; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Randy and Mary Servaes, his grandfathers Eugene Servaes and Herman Fladung and an uncle Matthew Fladung

Walter Norman “Walt” Adams, age 83, of Overland Park, Kansas, died Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at the Overland Regional Medical Center.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022, at St. Benedict Church in Atchison, KS. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Walter was born on December 21, 1938, in Jamaica, New York, the son of the late Phoebe (Morgan) and Walter Adams. He attended high school in Hot Springs, AR, and graduated from the University of Arkansas. He was in the Army National Guard for four years while in Arkansas.

He and the former Elizabeth Bush were united in marriage on May 30, 1964, at St. Benedict’s Church in Atchison, KS. He continued his catholic faith throughout his life.

Walt moved to Atchison, Kansas in 1960 because of his step-father and began his employment career for Blish-Mize & Silliman before he became a National Buyer for Western Auto. He and his wife moved to Goodland, Kansas, where they resided for forty years. While there, he owned the Warehouse Mall and Warehouse Discount Furniture earning the nickname “Super Walt” for his incredible television ads. After selling the furniture business, Walt’s last working endeavor was for Nationwide Homes for fifteen years where he was the top salesman for Shulte Homes Sales until his retirement in 2004. Throughout his career he owned numerous rental properties and was always an inventive kind of person; he always had a project in the works-some succeeded, some not!

He became a “snow bird” in retirement where he loved spending time at their condo in Mazatlán, Mexico, next to the beach. He and his wife made many memories travelling with friends on vacations Walt won through work. He enjoyed a good old country western movies with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood and was a big fan of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Adams, of the couple’s home; four children and ten grandchildren, Arthur “Rich” Adams (Dana) and their children, Stephanie Townsend, Alexis, Jillian and Paige Adams; Patricia Vander Laan (Scott) and their children Katherine and Joseph Vander Laan; Christopher Adams (Diane); Dr. Sara Oliver (Drew) and their children, Ethan, Michael, Emily and Samuel Oliver; his brother, Richard J. “Dick” Adams (Logan); and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Family was very important to Walt and he always enjoyed family gatherings with those he loved.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Adams; mother, Phoebe “Joyce” Kinney and step-father, Arthur Kinney. 

Justin Allen Wommack, 42, of Wetmore, KS, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022 in Centralia, KS. He was born June 3, 1980 in Tulsa, OK, the son of Tommy Allen Wommack and Martha (Hoelscher) Fund.

Justin lived in Wetmore for 26 years and previously in Oklahoma. He worked for Youngs Trenching as a heavy equipment operator and he was a Volunteer Firefighter for Goff Fire Department.

 Survivors include his companion, Renee Thieme of Wetmore, KS; mother and step-father, Bruce and Martha Fund of Wetmore, KS; 3 children, Kyler, Kamber and Kori Wommack all of the home; step-grandmother, Betty Fund of Wetmore, KS; sister, Desiree Fund of Michigan and 3 brothers, Dylan Fund of Wetmore, KS, Kenny Hoelscher of Oklahoma and Jeremy Hoelscher of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his father, Tommy Wommack; sister, Angela Wommack; maternal grandparents, Norbert and Doris Hoelscher; paternal grandparents, Glenn and Dorothy Wommack and step-grandfather, Larry Fund.

Annetta Marie (Roesch) Pickett left her earthly home Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Integris Hospice House Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to be with her Heavenly Father after a year-long battle with Pancreatic Cancer at the age of 84.  

She was born July 11, 1938 in Falls City, Nebraska where she was the oldest of 7 children to Fred “Fritz” Adam Roesch and Mabel Francis (Noyes) Roesch.  Anne spent most of her childhood in Southeastern Nebraska living in Falls City, Dawson, Nebraska City, Shubert and other towns.  She was attending Otoe High School her junior year when her family moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where she graduated in 1955 at age 16.  Anne returned to Nebraska City after graduation and began working at the Pat A Cake Cafe and Foley’s Jewelry Store.  It was at the cafe where she met and fell in love with Gary Pickett from Nemaha, Nebraska.  They were married on May 4,1956 and soon afterwards the start of their family began with the birth of their son in June of 1957.  Gary' s 47-year career with Western Union in 1955 moved the little family to Falls City, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Little Rock, Arkansas and other towns along the way until he arrived at Tinker Air Force Base in 1962.  A daughter was added to the family in 1966 and soon the family grew more after weddings and grandbabies were born.  For 60 years the Pickett family would call Oklahoma City and the Mid-Del suburban area their home.  During the 1970’s and 80’s, Anne served as homeroom mother and Sunday school teacher in her children’s classrooms and later returned to work as a receptionist at Lee’s RV City where she retired in 1998.

Anne was preceded in death by her father, her mother Mabel Komma and stepfather Karl Komma of Nebraska City, NE, and her 2 brothers; Fred Roesch Auburn, WA and Jerry Roesch Nebraska City, NE.

She leaves memories of her beautiful smile and her loving heart that she shared with everyone but especially with her husband of over 66 years Gary Pickett, her 2 children: son Daniel “Danny” Pickett and wife Jeanne (Lowrie) of Midwest City, OK; daughter Michelle (Pickett) Thompson and fiancé Jason Schaefer of Mustang, OK; 3 sisters: Rosalie (Roesch) McFall, MO; Linda (Roesch) Allison and husband Mike of Nebraska City, NE; Vicki (Roesch) Larson and husband Ryan of Nebraska City, NE; brother David Roesch and wife Patsy of Edgewood, WA; an Aunt Alicia Noyes of Newport Beach, CA; 3 grandchildren will be missing their Nana's unwavering love and support; Brittany (Pickett) Filson and husband Kyle of Choctaw, OK; Garrett “Chance” Pickett and wife AnnaVittoria (Connor) of Midwest City, OK; Brock Thompson of Oklahoma City, OK; great-grandchild Grant Filson of Choctaw, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews she loved dearly. 

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Heim Cemetery in Dawson, Nebraska.

Marilyn Sue (Goodpasture) Chatman, age 64, of Rushville, Missouri, died Monday, July 25, 2022, at Mosaic Life Care surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral Service will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2022 at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Marilyn will be cremated following the service with interment to be at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery. Marilyn was born on September 11, 1957, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Amy (Burton) and Jesse “Elmer” Goodpasture. She attended public schools in Atchison.

She and Roger Lee Chatman, Sr. were united in marriage on September 23, 1972, in Atchison, Kansas and spent forty-four years together until his passing on August 6, 2016.

Marilyn was a small businesses entrepreneur including remodeling homes, owning MC Motors Car Lot and Chatty’s-their family owned and operated restaurant. She was always a partner to her husband in their endeavors; they enjoyed working side by side. She held her real estate license and formerly worked for Century 21. She later was able to take on her favorite role as a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She enjoyed the outdoors: swimming, fishing, boating and camping to name a few. She cleaned and cleaned and could always be found cleaning. Her dog, Honey, was very special to her and was like part of the family, but most important to her was the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and family.

She is survived by her mother, Amy Goodpasture and will always be remembered by her children and their families: son, Roger and Heather Chatman with Zander, Kaylee and Kelsey; three daughters, Beth and Tony Baker with their children, Garrett (Kayleigh) and their son, Deacon; Levi (Tannah) and their sons, Grady and Jase; and Andrew; Brenda and Jake Perry with Shianne Chatman (fiancé, Aaron Brown); Morgan (fiancé, Colin Moranz), and Jacob, Jr.; Bridgett and Heath Baker with Montana (fiancé, Andrew Wilson); Madison (Nick) Kuhn who are expecting baby boy, Hudson in November; and Heath, Jr. Additional survivors include her siblings, John Goodpasture, Lola “Rene” Earl, Donna (Jim) Wood and Linda Ballard.

She was preceded in death by her father, husband, a brother, Jesse Goodpasture; her sisters, Lois Thompson and Carol Martin.

Marjorie Louise Ukena Bauer, 99, of Highland died July 24, 2022 at Two Timbers in Highland, Kansas. She was a few weeks short of her hundredth birthday celebration. Her strength was an inspiration to the family.

Marjorie (Lou) was born on August 7, 1922, in Leona Kansas, the second child of Cornelius George and Dorothy Ellen Boone Ukena. She spent her early years in Leona and moved to Highland in 1937 where she and her family lived in the “Boone“ home with her Grandmother.

Lou graduated Highland High School, Highland Community College and in 1943 graduated Kansas University with a degree in Education. On Valentines Day, that same year, she married Virgil Gene Bauer in a wedding ceremony performed at the family home. That marriage lasted over 70 years, until Virgil’s death in December 2013.

Lou’s life was dedicated to her teaching career, her church and her family and friends. She taught Home Economics for more than 30 years at Highland High School. She became a dear friend and mentor to many of her students. Many of these relationships continued far beyond her retirement. Lou was particularly dedicated to her sponsorship of Kayettes, a Kansas association focused upon the development of young women. For years she directed this group in sponsoring the annual Easter Egg hunt at the college, Mother/Daughter teas at the high school and other community events. Lou was also very supportive of Highland College and served on their Alumni Board.

In addition to her career as an educator, Lou, was very active in Highland Christian Church. For decades, she was active in her Sunday School class (PEP), and taught this class for many years. She was also very active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship (serving as president of this group in the 1980s). She rarely missed an opportunity to provide food or serve at church meetings, picnics, and funerals. Lou was also a founding member of the Progressive Club, a community group that was an anchor in Highland for many years, providing women an opportunity to engage in many social and community activities.

Lou is survived by four children. Becky (Larry) Peterson of Toronto, Canada; Gene (Judy) Bauer of Lawrence, Kansas; Neal (Heather) Bauer of Palm Coast, Florida and Ellen (Tom) Simpson of St. Joseph. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; Jason and Phillip Simpson, Erik and Emily Peterson, Boone Turnbauer and Caroline Bauer, Alex Bauer, Katalin Bauer Slangas, Will, Jack and Harry Bauer, and Mathew Gellner-Garcia. Nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild also survive. Lou was preceded in death by her parents, her bother, Neal Ukena and her sister, Jane Crabtree. She is survived by her sister Dorothy (Dottie) Dorrell of St. Charles, Missouri.

Public graveside services will be held at Highland Cemetery on Wednesday July 27th at 2:00 pm.

She will lie in state at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland on the same date from 11:00 am until 1:30 pm. No visitation will be held due to covid. Guest book will be available.

Carl  Merril “Swede” Lovendahl, 84, of rural Meriden, passed away after an extended illness on Friday, July 22, 2022 at home.  He was born a farmer and died a farmer. He also worked at the  Goodyear Company in Topeka from 1959 to 1997.

He was a 1956 graduate of Meriden Rural High School. He served in the U.S. Amy Reserves in the 89th Division, Company B, 353 infantry from 1956 to 1964.  He was a member of the Rock Creek Bible Church.

He married his wife of 62 years, Karen Sylvia Keck on July 16, 1960 at Topeka, KS, she survives at the home. He is also survived by two daughters, Kerril (David) Bauerly, Meriden, and Daren (Randy) Penry, Meriden, seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many loving cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, Carl  Derril  Lovendahl on July 24, 1988.  

Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, July 29, 2022 at Rock Creek Bible Church. Visitation will be an hour before services 9:30 to10:30 AM at the Church. Burial will follow at Muddy Creek Cemetery, rural Meriden.

Jodene (Hollis) Werner was born to Raymond Lee and JoAnn (Monhollon) Hollis on October 28, 1955 in Wetmore, Kansas.  She passed away peacefully at her home in Tecumseh, Nebraska on July 21, 2022.  Jodene grew up in Goff, Kansas where was active in the Goff Methodist Church as well as the Rustler’s 4-H Club. She enjoyed learning to sew, cook and attending summer camps. In high school Jodene was a member of the Wetmore Basketball Team and played the flute in band.  She graduated from Wetmore High School in 1972, a year early, and went on to attend Highland Community College and Kansas State Teachers College.  She received her Undergraduate Degree in Business from Peru State College and her Masters of Business Administration from University of Phoenix.

Jodene was united in marriage to David E. Werner in Goff, Kansas on April 27, 1974.  To this union three children were born.   Jodene worked in the Business/Accounting field at Tecumseh Federal Bank.   Her interests in her spare time included travel, golf, spending time with family and friends, riding motorcycles with Dave, chasing grandchildren, watching sports, cooking and baking, knitting, gardening, reading, shopping, fishing, camping and listening to music. 

She is survived by her children, Crystal Werner and fiance' Chris Chapman of  Longview, WA, Nathan and Melissa Werner of Tecumseh, NE and Misty and Clint Strayhorn of The Dalles, OR, grandsons, Michael and fiance' Kristina Yaschenko of Portland, OR, Kollin Strayhorn, Cameron and Elliott Werner, sister, Jennifer (Frank) Mueseler of Powhattan, KS, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law  Deb and Bruce Dalluge of Tecumseh, NE and Roberta and Bill Royse of West Des Moines, IA and her beloved nieces.   She was preceded in death by her husband Dave (Sept. 14, 2014), parents Raymond and JoAnn and parents-in-law, Robert and Colleen Werner.

Nedra Ferne (Bright) Stevicks, of Falls City, NE, passed away July 21, 2022 at Falls City. She was born December 10, 1922 to Clarence E. and Minnie (Timmerman) Bright on the farm in Shubert, NE. She attended Muddy Center elementary school, Pioneer Country School for Junior High and graduated from Shubert High School in 1940. On October 10, 1940 she married Ray Kenneth Stevicks of Dawson. They were the parents of five children. They made their home in the Shubert and Stella areas where Ray worked for the farmers. They then moved to Bern, KS and then to Miles Ranch to work there and in the early 50’s rented ground south and east of Dawson where they farmed, moving to Table Rock for a season and then to Dawson when Ray went to work for Richardson County.

Nedra worked at James Creamer in Falls City, Danny Dare sewing factory in Auburn and lastly at Campbells Soup where she worked for eighteen years. Ray passed away May 1, 1986 and she moved to Falls City to live with her daughter Jackie. She went back to work at Victory Village in the laundry and for Jones Brook Estates. The job she most enjoyed was being a foster grandparent in the Head Start Program where she worked until she was 898. She said the kids were the highlight of the day and could always make you smile.

Nedra was a lifelong member of Prairie Union Baptist Church. She helped with bible school, the yearly Memorial Day dinners and other programs until her health kept her from doing as much. She was also a member of Falls City DOES Drove #56 since 2001.

Nedra and Ray were blessed with and survived by five children, Lorma Jeanne Feldmann, Larry Ray (Glenda) Melvin LeRoy (Boonta), Linda Gerdes, Jackie (Steve) Lewis, twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren and twenty-nine great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, sisters, Norma (Richard) Kratz and one in infancy, brothers, Robert (Edna), Donald (Vera), neal (Jeannette and Mildred), sons-in-law, Terry Sailors, Gary Feldmann and Gary Gerdes.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel Farley officiating. Interment will be in Prairie Union Cemetery.

William Allen “Willie” Blacksmith, 35, of Horton, KS died Sunday morning, July 17, 2022.

He was born February 27, 1987 in Holton, KS the son of Gary Blacksmith. Willie attended Kickapoo Nation schools and graduated from Horton High School with the Class of 2005.

Willie worked various jobs in the local communities throughout his life.

Willie was athletic and good at sports. He especially loved football. Any chance he could, Willie was enjoying the outdoors. He spent countless hours with his father, Gary, hunting and fishing. They had a unique bond. Many will tell you he was ornery as heck, hard headed, stubborn, big hearted, and a teddy bear. When Willie was around, you didn’t feel left out. He involved everyone. He was so proud of and lived for his kids. He will be forever remembered with that contagious smile and as a Protector of his family and friends.

He is survived by his father; Gary Blacksmith, sisters; Jessi Blacksmith and Rachelle Blacksmith, all of Horton, KS. Daughters; Ayiana Blacksmith-Juarez of Fairview, KS, Sydney Blacksmith of Platte City, MO and Brooke Blacksmith of Platte City, MO, sons; Maddix Blacksmith of Onaga, KS, and Landon Blacksmith of Omaha, NE, nieces and nephews; Dominique, Braven, Lily, Chenoa, Chanelle, Rainer, Harley, Brighten, and Hudson; aunts; Janet “Nana” Negonsott and Terri Blacksmith and numerous cousins. Willie never wanted to leave anyone out. Everyone that he knew was family to him.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, William Blacksmith Jr. and his grandparents; Mary Ann Blacksmith-Negonsott and Harmon Blacksmith.

A private service will be held for immediate family only at a private residence. Burial will be at the Negonsott Cemetery Friday morning. All family and friends are welcome to attend.

Lynette “Lyn” Bahnsen passed away Sunday July 10th, 2022 surrounded by loved ones after a short battle with cancer.

Lyn was born December 26, 1960, in Sioux City, Iowa to Norma Jeanne and Delbert Lee Bahnsen. Lyn was the eldest daughter. She grew up in Fremont, Nebraska where, as a young girl, she enjoyed riding her bike and swimming in the river. Lyn relocated to Hiawatha, Kansas with her family at the age of 17. Here Lyn met her first husband and the father of her children, Gary Meisenheimer, while waitressing at a local hot spot. They were shortly after married on March 2, 1979. They welcomed their first child, Nicholas, the following January and then followed their daughters Ashlee, Jacklyn, Kayla, and Ariel.

Lyn was a homemaker during her children’s upbringing, spending her days teaching her children and cooking. She was involved in the Robinson Lion’s Club and Robinson Baseball Association. She loved camping and fishing with her family. Gary and Lyn had a construction business G & L Construction for which she helped maintain the bookkeeping. She would later, when her children were older, take accounting courses at Highland Community College. Gary and Lyn were divorced in 1997 and Lyn moved to Nebraska where she lived for the next 17 years.

Lyn retired due to health issues in 2012 and moved back to Hiawatha in 2014 to be closer to family. She would later meet her fiancé Edwin “Packy” Parker. Her greatest joys were spending time with her grandchildren and weekends at the lake with Packy. She was also very passionate about her gardening. Lyn will always be remembered for her wonderful ability to work with what she had and make things beautiful.

She was preceded in death by her mother Norma Jeanne Monroe; her stepfather Milo Molitor; and her grandparents Sterling “Stub” and Lola Armstrong.

Lyn is survived by her children Nicholas Meisenheimer, Ashlee (Nathan) Simpson, Jacklyn (Jeffrey) Kerr, Kayla (Christopher) Williams, and Ariel (Jack) Blanton; 17 grandchildren; her siblings Doug Bahnsen of Fremont, Nebraska; Cindy (Ron) VanEpps of Hays, Kansas; Lisa (Larry) Wilke of Emporia, Kansas; and Bryan (Kaori) Molitor of Honolulu, Hawaii.

A visitation will be held on Friday July 29th at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home from 6 until 7:30 that evening. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday July 30th at 10:00 am at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Lehmkuhl officiating. Graveside services will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery.

Clarence “Scotty” Scott, 87, of Falls City, NE, passed away July 15, 2022 at Falls City. He was born June 4, 1935 at Rulo, NE to Ralph and Azalia “Pete” (Liberty) Scott.

He married Patricia Painter on October 7, 1955 at Falls City

Scotty served in the Nebraska National Guards in Company B at Falls City from 1953 until 1965.

Scotty attended country school and was raised at Rulo and Preston and attended Falls City High School. He moved to Falls City in 1951 and worked for Richardson County, Sidles Mr. Automotive,  Harmon’s O. K. Tire and then purchased the milk route and operated Falls City Milk Products. He delivered milk for 14 years before retiring in 1984 due to his health. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, served on the Falls City Volunteer Fire Department from 1967-1987 and was secretary for eleven years. He was also a Boy Scout Leader and former member of the Elks Lodge.

Scotty is survived by his wife, Pat of Falls City, children, Randy and his wife Pam of Falls City, Ann Crosby and her husband Pat of Kansas City, MO, Mike and his wife Cindy of Falls City, grandchildren, Ben, Jason, Joe, Dillion and Avery Scott, great-granddaughters, Parker and Hazel. He was preceded in death by parents and a brother, Lee.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Bethel United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Hader officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

Dennis Mellage, 77, of Falls City, NE, passed away July 12, 2022 at Sabetha, KS. He was born July 5, 1945 at Falls City to Wilbur and Maxine (Chesnut) Mellage.

He married Judy West on November 17, 1962 at Reserve, KS. She passed away November 24, 2018.

Dennis attended Reserve High School and following his schooling he worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad until 1976 when he then started farming the family farm. He farmed until 1982 when he began working for Falls City Fertilizer, then drove for Crouse Trucking. His final place of employment was working for Bear Scholl, retiring in 2018. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (20th and Towle St.)

Dennis survived by his children, Brenda Fisher and her husband Wendell of Kansas City, MO, Chris and his wife Barb of Falls City, Cherie Derr and her husband Curtis of Lincolnton, NC, brother, Marvin and his wife Linda of Broken Arrow, OK, sisters, Jane Thomas and Judy Crouse and her significant other, Clyde Schroeder both of Nebraska City, NE, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 4 brothers-in-law, sister-in-law and two nephews.

June A. Scheitel, 92, of Falls City, NE, passed away July 12, 2022 at Falls City. She was born June 10, 1930 at Falls City to William and Emma (Spainhower) Allen.

She married Donald Scheitel on September 18, 1949 at Zion Union Church of Christ. He passed away April 12, 2009.

June graduated from Falls City High School in 1948. She worked as a checker and bookkeeper at Mix Master Grocery from 1942 until 1948. After graduation she moved to Omaha to work for the Union Pacific Railroad until the birth of Kent in 1952. She then worked for Sun Newspaper in Omaha as a bookkeeper and proof reader from 1953 until 1956 when Debra was born. The couple moved to Portland in 1960 when her husband transferred with the Union Pacific Railroad, they moved back to Omaha in 1970 and back to Oregon in 1975. She retired in 1984. The coupled wintered in Arizona from 1986 until 1999 and moved to Falls City in 2000. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ.

June is survived by her children, Kent Scheitel of Portland, OR, Debra Whitman and her husband Rob of Omaha, grandchildren, Douglas and William Whitman and Ashley Scheitel, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Wayne and W. H. “Bill” Allen and a sister, R. Maxine Lewis.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, July 18, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Reverend Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Interment will be in Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Beverly Jean Gaddis, 66, of Effingham, Kansas died July 9, 2022, at Mosaic Life Center in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Beverly was born Aug. 22, 1955, in Melvern, Kansas, the daughter of Jess and Ileta (Hadway) Kuykendall. She married Dale Gaddis on May 1, 1975.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters; Dawn Bryson and Dana Preston; five grandchildren; two sisters Leona Steuart and Diana Gearhart. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Leon and Keith Kuykendall.

Joyce E. Buck, 86, passed away July 9, 2022 at Falls City, NE. She was born October 9, 1935 at Lincoln, NE. to Charles and Eva (Barry) Luginbill.

She married Don Buck on January 19, 1957 at Lincoln. He passed away July 27, 2021.

Joyce was raised at Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954 and then attended Wesleyan University. She worked as a bookkeeper at Lincoln Country Club before marriage. When married the couple made their home in Lincoln, she was a homemaker. They moved to Kansas City and then to Murdock where she worked at a restaurant, they moved to Falls City in 1978.  She worked at various places including Little Duffer’s,Sun-Mart and was the bookkeeper for Buck’s Printing.  

She was a member of the DOES #56 since 1984, honorary member of the VFW Auxiliary Color Guard and Honor Guard; Richardson County Heart Association; Red Hat Society; Hospital Auxiliary Pink Lady; Respite Care Volunteer; rescue reading at Sacred Heart and the Humane Society. In 2016 at a Grand Lodge Meeting in Lincoln, she received the Loyalty Award of the Benevolent Patriot Order of DOES.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Todd Buck, Sr. and his wife Janis of Texas and Calvin Buck of Falls City, grandchildren,

Nicole and Todd, Jr. of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a half sister, Lavene Carter.

Patricia “Pat” Jean (Stauffer) Badberg, 94, of Humboldt, Nebraska was the eldest daughter born to Oliver J. and Nora Bell (Johnson) Stauffer.  She was born in Richardson County on June 13, 1928 and attended grade school at Union Hill District #68.  Patricia graduated from Bern High School in Bern, Kansas with the class of 1945. She then attended Emporia State Teachers College where she received her Elementary Teaching Certificate.  Patricia then taught rural country school at Union District #8 south of Du Bois, Nebraska and Speiser Center District #65 south of Humboldt.

On January 5, 1950, Pat was united in marriage to Richard Badberg in Pawnee City, Nebraska by Rev. B.F. Parnell.  To this union a daughter, Kathleen, was born.  Patricia worked as a typing secretary at O.A. Cooper Company for two years, the Humboldt Standard for a year, and for Drs. Heim and Stappenbeck’s office for a total of forty-one years before retiring.  She enjoyed working on the farm with her husband, spending time with her family and was a former member of the Crescent Rebekah’s Lodge #100.  Patricia passed away on Friday, July 8, 2022, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of ninety-four years and twenty-five days.  She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard Badberg, sisters Emma Lou and Pearl Mayer, a brother Henry Stauffer, nephew Gene Mayer, sisters-in-law Carol Sue Bright and Norma King and Brothers-in-law Dean and Raymond Badberg.

Patricia is survived by her loving daughter Kathy Blecha and husband Mike of Humboldt, NE; a sister Ruth Ann Carrier of Vista, CA; step-sister Irene Planner and her husband Clarence of Iowa; sister-in-law Betty Stauffer of Humboldt, NE; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Dorothy Smith officiating.

Melvin Edward Wagner, Sr, 87 of Winchester, KS, passed away peacefully on his birthday, Friday, July 8, 2022 surrounded by his family at his home. 

He was born July 8,1935 at Atchison, KS, the son of Carl Francis and Rose Marie Enzbrenner Wagner.  He was a 1954 graduate of Winchester Rural High School. He served nine years in the U.S. Army National Guard.  Melvin was a lifelong farmer and cattleman in the Jefferson County area.  He loved to socialize at the local cafés, auctions, livestock sales and county fairs.  Melvin never knew a stranger.

Melvin was a lifetime member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Mooney Creek. He was a former Grand Knight, a Honorary Life member of Knights of Columbus Council #2885 and had served on the Church Council.  Melvin was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association and Kansas Farm Bureau.  In his youth, he was a member of the Leavenworth County Lucky 6 4-H Club and continued his love for county fairs by supporting his children and grandkids through their exhibits.   

Melvin married his wife of 57 years, Elaine Marie Noll on February 27,1965 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Mooney Creek. She survives at the home. Survivors include a son and three daughters:  Sandra (Cecilia Foster) Wagner, Gardner, KS, Melvin “Mel”, Jr,( fiancé Antoinette Cammisano), Basehor, KS, Susan (Tim) Lehew, Horton, KS, Lisa (Tony) Russell, Wichita, KS.  Two surviving sisters:  Mary Newell, Oskaloosa, KS, Dolores Wood, Atchison, KS.  Seven grandchildren:  Nicole (Aaron) Smith, Mikaela Lehew, Kelly Lehew, Julia Lehew, Joshua Russell, Claire Russell, Jameson Russell and a great grandson, Owen Smith.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald A. Wagner and Wilbur C. Wagner.

Teresa J. Portenier, 67 of Atchison, KS, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family.

Teresa was born December 31, 1954, the daughter of John and Elma Jean (Treat) Avey.  She worked as an Optician for Dr. Freiden and Dr. Bock-Kunz of Atchison Eye Specialist.  Teresa was a Charter Member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church, where she taught Sunday School for forty-five years and helped with children church.  She also served the church for funeral dinners and helped clean the church.  Teresa enjoyed her friends, shopping, exercising at the YMCA, taking spin classes and body pump.  She especially loved her family and grandkids; they were her life.

Helen ‘Max’ Maxine Cook, 98, lifelong resident of the Holton area, passed away Thursday July 7, 2022 at the Midland Hospice Care in Topeka, Kansas. Born on February 10, 1924 in Holton, Kansas, she was one of 14 children born to Walter Franklin Kathrens and Helen Margaret Glenn. Shortly after graduating high school Max married Norman C. Cook and they enjoyed a 30 year life in the military and were married for 56 years. She was proud to have contributed to our nation’s efforts in WWII by working in the Bremerton, Washington shipyards.

Max and Norman adopted five children and she devoted her life to raising the family. She was praised by everyone who knew her for being the best ever baker and cook and her bread, pies, and cakes were always received with anticipation.

She is preceded in death by 12 siblings and son, Ryan Douglas Cook. She is survived by her children Ronald Lee Cook (Brenda) of Whiting, Kansas, Richard Bradley Cook (Lisa) of Seattle, Washington, Maria Rochelle Cook (Tom) of Lummi Island, Washington, Paula Renee Cook (John) of Anchorage, Alaska, and daughter-in-law Maryanne Cook of Rockledge, Florida. Additional survivors are her brother and sister Wallace (Wally) Wendell Kathrens of Holton, Kansas and Roberta (Kaye) McKeever of Hines, Oregon, and six grandchildren. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Sherri Moore who gave comfort to Mom with her compassionate care giving for 11 years.

Judith Anne Bourne, 81, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2022.

Judy was born on April 6, 1941 in Vermillion, Kansas to Ralph and Mary (Bishop) VanGilder.

She graduated from Vermillion High School and the Clark School of Business. She married Melvin “Sonny” Bourne on a sweltering hot day, July 2, 1960 in the Vermillion Methodist Church. They were married for 62 years, while spending the last 53 of those years in Centralia. Judy spent most of her working life serving the customers at the United Bank and Trust in Seneca, KS.

Judy was the foundation for the family that she and Sonny raised. She took great joy doing what she could to serve her community and support her family. Judy enjoyed gardening, fishing, and was an avid reader. She also loved sewing and quilting, making a quilt for every grandchild’s graduation and great-grand child’s birth. She spent many a day traveling to her grandchildren’s competitions around the state and across the country. She was also a great friend to many. She enjoyed opportunities to spend time with friends and family in all settings. Judy looked forward to her visits to the casino with Sonny, family members, and friends. Recently, she cherished the time spent with friends at monthly coffee.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her infant sister.

She is survived by her husband Melvin “Sonny” Bourne of the home, her children Dawn (Mark) Lackey of Lindsborg, KS, Tracy (Jill) Bourne of Colwich, KS, and Kris (Todd) Henning of Shawnee, KS, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her siblings Gail (Bill deceased) White, Linda (Jerry) Ewing, Steve (Donna) VanGilder, and Jan (Kevin) Hollander.

Alfred Edwin “Smitty” Huerter, 94, of Goff, KS died on Friday morning, July 8, 2022 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Smitty was born on November 7, 1927, to Emil and Valeria Johnstone Huerter.  He grew up in the Goff community and attended Maple Shade Country School, Kelly Grade School and graduated from Goff High School in 1947.

Smitty helped his father on farm until he entered the US Air Force on December 11, 1947. He was assigned to the 5700th Air Base Squadron at Albrook Air Force Base in the Canal Zone in Panama. Smitty had 2 years, 9 months, and 30 days overseas during his 6 years military service. Smitty was discharged for the second time on December 10, 1953 at the rank of T/Sgt (T).

He married Iris H Bantel on February 14, 1953, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mt. Clemens, Michigan.

Smitty returned to the Goff community and returned to farming, later he was asked to be a substitute mail carrier, a position he held for 19 years prior to taking the position full-time for three years. He retired from the USPS on September 3, 1990. He also served as a township patrolman for six years, spending the remainder of his time farming, which was his passion.

He was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Goff American Legion Post #0316.

Smitty enjoyed fishing, hunting, collecting John Deere tractors and watching anything western.

Smitty was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Iris on February 23, 2014; he was also preceded in death by two sons, Randall D. Huerter on October 29, 2009 and Michael G. Huerter on September 2, 1986; three grandchildren, James G. Huerter on November 2, 1998, Michelle B. Huerter on May 11, 1981 and Stephanie A. Huerter on March 2, 1996; his brothers, William on November 18, 2017 and James on July 28, 2021.

Smitty is survived by two sons, Rick (Linda) Huerter of Seneca and Mark (Hannah) Huerter of Corning; his brothers, Robert Huerter of Chanute, KS and Daniel Huerter of Bellevue, NE; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM on Monday, July 11, 2022, at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Juanita Lee McKee died June 23 at the Maple Heights Nursing Home.

She was born to Adeline (Raymer) Floro and Roscoe Floro in Scranton, KS, on October 24, 1927.  Juanita attended school in Whiting, KS, and met the love of her life, Calvin McKee at a community dance near Powhattan, KS.  They were married September 13, 1943, in Topeka, KS.  Juanita had several part-time jobs outside the home, but her career was raising their two daughters, Sharon and Ruth. The family enjoyed boating and camping when the girls were in the home, and later Calvin and Juanita loved motorcycling and traveling in their RV.  After retirement, they spent 1winter in Texas and 15 winters in Arizona.

Juanita was preceded in death by her parents Adeline and Roscoe Floro; brother, Roscoe Floro II; and sister, Ethel Schrader.

She is survived by her husband of 78 years, Calvin McKee of the home; daughters Sharon (Robert) Hundley of Netawaka, KS; and Ruth (Ron) Randall of Hiawatha; brother, Richard Douglass of Topeka, KS; 6 grandchildren  Shelly (David) Riedley of Atchison, KS; Lizabeth (Tom) White of Colorado Springs, CO; R. Ashton Hundley of Kansas City, MO: Jason (Robyn) Loftin of Parker, CO;  Ryan (Amanda) Loftin of Shawnee, KS; and Matthew (Heather) Hundley of Holton, Kansas;  14 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha.  Visitation at 10 a.m., service following at 11 a.m.  Shane Spangler will officiate.

James F. “Jim” Jermain, 86, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at the Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.  

Jim was born on January 15, 1936, in Conception, Missouri to Benedict and Jessie (Imers) Jermain.  

Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1964. He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Wathena, Kansas. Jim worked and retired from Wire Rope, St. Joseph, Missouri.  

Jim married Dorothy Derks on August 23, 1958, in Clyde, Missouri. She survives of the home.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Siblings, Sister Mary Catherine Jermain, Bennie Jermain, Annie Gerhard, Margaret Burandt, John Jermain, Gertrude Wisdom, Rose Marie Jermain, and Vincent Jermain.  

Additional survivors include his children, Don Jermain (Donna), Gary Jermain (Sheryl), Jerry Jermain (Stephanie) and Deanna Powell (Rob).  

11 Grandchildren, sister, Agnes Stoll (Ed) and brother, Ray Jermain.  

Numerous nieces and nephews.

Dean Volker, age 91, formerly of Nemaha, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Colonial Acres in Humboldt.

Orville Francis Watowa, 90, Buena Park, California, formerly of Atchison, Kansas, passed away May 15, 2022, In God’s hands.

Orville was born October 11, 1931, son of Lawrence G. Watowa and Phoebe E. (Thrift). He attended St. Benedict’s Elementary School, and the Good Intent Grade School west of Atchison and Atchison County Community High School, Effingham, Kansas.

He enlisted in the Navy in October 1951 as a Gunner Mate during the Korean War, until his honorable discharge on October 11, 1955. After serving in the military, a year later he married and moved to Simi Valley, California in 1957, then to Buena Park, California in 1969. He worked as a Light and Heavy Equipment operator in Supervisory and Lead roles for over 36 years for the State of California Highway Department (CALTRANS), until his retirement on December 31, 1996.

Orville is survived by two sons, Travis E. Watowa, Anaheim, California, Monty A. Watowa, Buena Park, California; three daughters, Tammy M. Neumann, Platte City, Missouri, Renee F. LaCorte, Corona, California, Kristen K. Watowa, Temecula California; two brothers, Jerome (Jerry) Watowa, Topeka, Kansas, Donald Watowa, Sterling, Alaska; and one sister, Doris Smith, Atchison, Kansas.

Orville is preceded in death by both his parents, former wife Delores M. Watowa (Benshoof), one daughter, Tina J. Watowa; and two brothers, Robert (Bob) Watowa, Jim Watowa, Atchison, Kansas

He treasured his children (6), grandchildren (10), greatgrandchildren (4) and all of our family friends (as his own). He was a Farmer, Construction Worker, Master Mechanic by nature, heavily involved throughout his lifetime; passionately entrenched in all of his communities, in so many ways.  Orville was a perpetual helper, especially involved in PTA, FFA, Band/football Booster Clubs, always volunteering to be our baseball/softball coach, to name just a few.  He was our hero, best friend, an honorable man, loved by all. Thank you for your service OFW and unconditional love, your hard work here is done.

Loreen Lulu Winchell, 94 of Horton, Kansas, passed away peacefully following a day surrounded by her loving children and husband Sunday, July 3rd at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Loreen was born to Jay Lewis and Lulu Maria (Mayberry) Hatter on February 10, 1928, in Concordia, Kansas. She grew up in Morrowville, Kansas alongside her beloved big sister Ellen Marie Aubert, who preceded her in death in 2020 at the age of 100. Loreen graduated from Morrowville High School in 1945. Having attended Normal School for teacher training during her senior year of high school, she was qualified and hired at the age of 17 to teach at Mount Pleasant, a one-room, all grades, country school in Washington County located on Highway 36. She spent three years teaching at Mount Pleasant. Loreen and Donald E. Winchell were wed on June 22, 1947, at the Morrowville Christian Church, Morrowville, Kansas.

Following Don’s completion of Barber College, they made their home in Horton, Kansas. In July 1948 they welcomed their first daughter into the world. Their family tree continued to grow, and over the years they were blessed with five children.

Loreen was a proud and loving mother and homemaker. She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Horton, Kansas. She participated in the Christian Women’s Fellowship group (CWF) and also served as the church clerk for many years. She could often be found tending to her vegetable gardens or her flower beds and she spent many hours on the front porch, swinging and engaging in long conversations with family and friends. A dedicated wife and mother, her joy came from making sure her family was well taken care of and her house was a loving home where traditions became memories, and a legacy was forged.

Loreen is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 75 years, Don of Horton, Kansas.

She is preceded in death by her eldest daughter Sandra Sue (Rick) Streeter.

She is survived by four children Donald Jay (Vicki) Winchell of Crooks, South Dakota, Peggy Jo (Dwayne) Blanton of Valley Falls, Kansas, Kathy Lynn (the late Alan) Ford of Topeka, Kansas, and Kristin Marie (John) May of Lake Ozark, Missouri. Loreen’s legacy also includes 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services are planned for Saturday, July 9, 2022, at the First Christian Church, Horton, Kansas with visitation at 9:30 AM and funeral service at 10:30 AM.

Doris "Arlene" Wilson, 90, of Horton, Kansas, passed away in the early morning hours of July 6, 2022 at the Hiawatha Hospital with loved ones by her side.

She was born on July 16, 1931 in Valley Falls, Kansas, the daughter of Carl and Stella Rion Kiefer. Arlene lost her father at the young age of 13 years old, and went on to graduate from Horton High School in 1949. On May 29, 1954 she married the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” Wilson in Topeka, KS, and would remain married for 59 years until Charles’s passing on June 4, 2013. They owned and operated a carpet and flooring business in downtown Horton, called Wilson Floor Covering for over 30 years. She would later go on to work at the Student Loan facility, and also Duckwall’s before retiring. Their home was full of love and laughter and provided a place for all their family to gather and celebrate countless holidays, birthdays, and many other occasions together. We all looked forward to her home-made beef and noodles as well. Helping make the noodles was half the fun.

Arlene was a long-standing member of the Horton First Christian Church and held roles such as Sunday school and Youth Group teacher, Deaconess, and Elder within the church for many years. Her and Pops (Charles) loved to take trips to the Lake of the Ozarks, and Branson, Missouri. Their main focus was to always include all of the family including kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. She loved to be surrounded by her family and loved ones, just as Chuck did.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wilson, infant great-grandson, Finn Brissett, her parents, Carl & Stella Kiefer, and her sister Betty Lassley.

She is survived by her daughters, Connie (Tim) Dewitt of Horton, KS, Cindy (Wayne) Rush of Troy, KS, and her son Tim (Angie) Wilson of Horton, KS. Arlene is also survived by 8 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren who will all miss her dearly.

The family will greet friends Sunday, July 10, 2022 at the Horton First Christian Church from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, to be followed by funeral services at 2:30 pm. Stephen Tandy Michaels, beloved father, Pap Pap, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on July 5, 2022, at age 72. He was surrounded by family, love and prayer in his final hours.

He is preceded in death by his parents Carl & Doris Michaels. Even in his final days he showed such bravery and poise, reflecting some of the finest qualities he displayed throughout his life. Steve was born on May 6, 1950 in Surveyor, Pennsylvania. He enjoyed spending summers at his Uncle Joe’s place and often lamented on those special times with his family. Steve became an Eagle Scout and played football at East Pennsboro High School before graduating from Missouri Western State University. His athleticism and drive led him to a sit-down meeting with Joe Paterno at Pennsylvania State University, but a knee injury put a halt to his football career.                                                                                                          

From the early days, Steve showed business acumen and an entrepreneurial spirit. He worked for Carnation in first Pennsylvania and then later in Elwood, Ks. where he managed logistics. He later transferred to Chattanooga, Tennessee and Rochelle, Illinois with Nestle where he was the Director of Transportation. He was a founding member and CEO of BMS Logistics LLC in St. Joseph, MO upon his return to the area in the late 1990s. Steve helped expand the business to multiple states and sat on the Board of Directors until the time of his passing. Steve also established a mail truck line, Ashley Enterprises.                                                                                        

Giving back to the community was important to Steve. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Moila Country Club. Steve also assisted in mentoring young entrepreneurs through the Craig Business School at Missouri Western.                    

Steve was a leader and a serious man, but he also knew how to have fun. He spent his free time with family and friends golfing, fishing, bowling, attending Nascar races and other sporting events. A hard read, his feelings and emotions were often a mystery except when he was enjoying life. His eyes sparkled and his contagious grin would light up the room in those moments. To those who knew him well, his quiet complexity was understood and revered.                                                                   

Steve is survived by his son Todd Michaels, daughter Ashley (Bill) Mears, grandchildren Billy, Payton, Holt and Lennox Mears, sister Vicki (Bede) Bufe, brother Joe (Terry) Michaels and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.                                                                                                                             

A Memorial Service and visitation will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church at 104 S. 7th St. in Wathena, KS. The visitation will be 6-8pm on Friday, July 8 and the funeral will be at 1:30pm on Saturday, July 9. 

A celebration of life will be held after the funeral on Saturday at Two Doors Down at 314 St. Joseph Ave in Wathena, Ks. Come celebrate Steve with food, drinks, pictures and any memories or stories you might want to share.

Cecilia “Cedar” M. Stuke, 96, of Seneca, Kansas died peacefully on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Crestview Nursing Home in Seneca, Kansas.

She was born on July 30, 1925 to Anton and Matte Bybee Lehn in Mercier, Kansas. She attended St Leo’s Grade School and Horton High School, Horton, Ks.

Cedar married Leonard “Bud” Stuke on October 11, 1947 in Saint Leo’s Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. Shortly after their union, the couple moved to the Stuke family farm where they remained. He proceeded her in death on January, 7th of 2014. One son Michael Stuke also proceeded her in death on January 28, 2021 as well as a daughter-in-law Candy Stuke on March 28, 2022.

Cedar loved photography, she worked for Pelican Photography in Horton during High School and a couple years after. She also loved playing cards, belonged to the QAF Club and other gatherings, played Pitch, Canasta & Bridge until a short time before her death. Furthermore, she enjoyed Bowling and was on a League for many years. She worked at JC Penny’s for many years until shortly before its closing. She then worked as Clerk of the District Court for many years until she retired. She also enjoyed watching Football, Baseball and having family gatherings. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cedar was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Saint Anne’s Altar Society for many years.

She is survived by; one son, Stephen Stuke of Seneca; four grandchildren; Eva (Troy) Taylor, Travis (Bran Dee) Stuke, Sherri (Taylor) Parlier, James (Amanda) Stuke, nine great-grandchildren; Dusti Larsen, Ellie Taylor, Jack Stuke, Eden Taylor, Koree Stuke, Trent Stuke, Treyton Stuke, Wyatt Parlier; Madelyn Stuke, Molly Stuke and two step-great-grandchildren; Ava Stuke and Zachary Phillips.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all siblings but one, Mary Alice Walls of Georgetown, Kentucky.

A rosary will be prayed on Thursday, July 7th at 7 p.m. at the Lauer Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on July 8, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Seneca.

Alda Mae Tanking Frey 85, of Chandler, Arizona, formerly of the Bern, Kansas area died peacefully on Monday, June 13, 2022, at her home in the Sunbird Retirement Community.

Alda was born on April 15, 1937, the daughter of Alfred and Catherine Runnebaum Tanking. Alda grew up east of Seneca on the Tanking Homestead and graduated from Saints Peter and Paul High School in 1955. After high school, Alda moved to Topeka and was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for five years.

Alda married Fred William Frey of Bern on April 15, 1961. They made their home on a farm east of Dubois, Nebraska. She enjoyed homemaking, attending her children’s sporting events, playing cards, dancing, the color purple, and spending quiet time in prayer. In 2005, Fred and Alda purchased a winter home in SunBird. Alda has called this beautiful oasis in the desert her home ever since. She enjoyed meeting friends from all over the country and enjoyed the Arizona sunshine.

Alda had a personal relationship with her Heavenly Father. She was baptized into the Catholic faith in 1937. She worshipped at Saints Peter & Paul in Seneca and St. Stevens in Sun Lake, Arizona. Alda spent many hours a day in quiet time praying for our world and her family.

Alda is survived by her sons Howard Frey, of DuBois, NE, Roy (Shari) Frey of Sabetha, KS; daughter, Cindy (Russ) Wilfert, of Mesa, AZ; five grandchildren, Jacqueline (Josh) Myers, of Des Moines, IA, Jacob Frey, of Lawrence, KS, Broderick (Haley) Frey, of Manhattan, KS, Jenna (Quaid) Vuncannon of Gilbert, AZ, and Caden Wilfert, of Goodyear, AZ; one great grandson, Wiliam Myers; one brother, Elmer Tanking of Tonganoxie; two sisters, Eileen Meyer of Sabetha and Jerri Ann Matzke of Silver Lake; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by Fred as well as siblings Johnny Tanking, Regis Tanking, and Jerry Tanking.

Mary Ann Manly, 87, of South Elgin, IL, passed away August 6, 2020. She was born February 25, 1933 and raised on a farm near Fall City, NE. Mary Ann attended Peru State Teachers College and taught in a one room schoolhouse for four years near North Platte, NE. She also taught third grade in Plattsmouth, NE for three years before getting married and raising her family in Bloomingdale, IL. Mary Ann worked in later years as a school librarian in District 15 before retiring from education. Bonnie Jenett (Klepper) Reed, 85, of Pawnee City, Nebraska passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2022 with her family by her side.  She was the second child born to Kenneth E. and Bonita “Bonnie” (Stewart) Klepper on November 29, 1936 in Pawnee City, Nebraska.  When Jenett was about 7 years old, her dad took a position with the U.P. Railroad in the small desert town of Kelso, California.  Besides her and her parents they had four other children who traveled with them to California.  They lived in Kelso for about 4 years.

Jenett continued her education in Pawnee City attending grade school and graduating from Pawnee City High School.  A broken leg in her first year of school set her back a year, presenting the opportunity for her and her sister, Beverly, to be in the same grade and both graduating in 1955.

Jenett then moved to California where she secured her first job working with her aunt at a care home and later at Convair, where she helped make airplanes.  She worked in office jobs and really enjoyed working as a real estate escrow officer.

A New Year baby girl, Eva JoAnn, was born to her and her first husband in 1959. Jenett had accepted Jesus as her Savior as a young child.  She and JoAnn joined the San Diego Baptist Church and was baptized into Christ.  Jenett and JoAnn often sang “Love Lifted Me” at church while JoAnn, being a little girl would stand on a chair behind the pulpit as they sang.

Jenett and Kenny Reed met in 1963 and then married in 1965, forming a wonderful family.  There were many trips back home to Nebraska and in 1976 they returned back to Pawnee City to make it their home.  Jenett took a job at the Pawnee Manor as  the bookkeeper, while studying and training for the administration position.  She worked for 23 years at the Pawnee Manor, filling in where she was needed when other employees were unable to work because of illness.  Jenett was always concerned about her residents and employees.

She found so much joy in her grandchildren. She loved taking pictures and writing poems and stories about Lynette, Michael and Carrie and her great grandson Darren making them the main characters.  Jenett loved to sing for weddings, funerals and at nursing homes and in high school she sang in the choir and operettas.  She was an excellent seamstress, loved baking, gardening and writing stories. 

Jenett and Kenny made many trips back to California visiting family and enjoyed many vacations taking in different areas in the U.S.  They delighted in feeding and watching the birds and all the squirrels, turkey and deer they shared their yard with.

Jenett was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Bonita Klepper, mother and father-in-law, Lucy and George Gillilan, her youngest sister, Marie Annette Hinrichsen, oldest brother Kenneth S. Klepper, brothers-in-law, Thomas Crews and Terry Schafer, sisters-in-law, Sandra Klepper, Joyce Klepper and Cheryth Klepper and several nieces and nephews.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Kenny Reed, her daughter, JoAnn Waldele, grandchildren, Lynette (Paul) (Turnbull)  Gilkey, Michael Huso, Carrie (Bob) (Huso) Snider, great-grandson, Darren Gilkey, sisters, Beverly Crews, Becki (Bob) Smith and Cathy Schafer, brothers, Herb Klepper, Richard Klepper, Jon Klepper, Keith Klepper, Mike (Linda) Klepper and Jack (Linda) Hinrichsen, many nieces, nephews, cousin and numerous friends.

Katherine Anne (Steinauer) Wehrbein, 91 of Burchard, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Bryan Memorial Hospital west with her family by her side.  She was born on April 3, 1931 to Norbert A. and Mary Susan Hochreiter in Lincoln, Nebraska. 

Katherine was born during the depression and during that time the family moved frequently, her father was out of work so they lived with grandparents in Steinauer, Nebraska and Lincoln, Nebraska.

Katherine attended grade school in Tecumseh, Syracuse, St. Theresa’s Grade School in Lincoln, Saratoga grade school, St. Anthony’s Grade School, then attended St. Anthony’s High School and graduated in 1949.  She then attend UNL for her Bachelor and graduated in 1953. Katherine interned at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri in 1954 and in 1981 graduated from University of Kansas with her Masters in 1981.

Katherine married Duane L. Wehrbein at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Steinauer, Nebraska on February 15, 1958. To this union two children were born, Jeffrey Duane and Beverly Kay. Duane passed away on March 19, 2016.

Katherine worked as a Registered Dietician at Lincoln General Hospital, Methodist Hospital in Omaha, County Health Department at Concordia, Kansas, Wyandotte City/County Health Department in Kansas.  She was a consultant in Nebraska for Pawnee County Hospital , Johnson County Hospital, Colonial Acres in Humboldt, Blue Springs in Kansas Nursing Home and Maple Grove Nursing Home.

Katherine was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burchard, Nebraska. She was president, secretary and treasure of the Altar Society for Sacred Heart Church. She was a member of Burchard  Legion Auxiliary and was the secretary. 

Katherine loved reading, sewing, knitting and being in the Extension Club, bowling, enjoyed dancing and enjoyed their annual trip to Las Vegas.   Enjoyed going for coffee and every Tuesday going to Jeannie’s Place for lunch. Enjoyed attending all of her grandchildren activities. 

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents Norbert and Mary Steinauer, husband Duane, brother Nicky Steinauer.

Katherine is survived by her son Jeffrey Duane (Tracie) Wehrbein, daughter, Beverly Kay (Brad) Stake, grandsons, Brandon (Julie) Stake, Tyler (Kayliegh) Wehrbein, granddaughters, Samantha (Matt) Selig, Jessica (Jason) Drager , Amber (Jordan) Workman, Brooke Wehrbein, Megan Wehrbein, great grandchildren, Owen, Alivia, Laken, Braxten, Blaire, Candace, Hazel, Olive, Leo, Lucy, Nora, Jackson, Cooper, Harlow, Wrenley,  sisters, Sue Miles, Sally Steinauer, brothers, Bob (Barb) Steinauer, sisters-in-law, Sharon Lambert, Carol Wehrbein, brother-in-law, David Wehrbein, nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

Eileen Ada Cawood Kling of Hiawatha, KS passed away July 4th, 2022 at the age of 101.

Eileen was born August 26, 1920 in Palmer, Kansas, the daughter of Walter F. Cawood and Ada Mae Stiles Cawood. She graduated from Corning High School in 1938 and attended classes at KSU for nursing. On September 28, 1943 she married Ernest Lee Kling in Lyndon, KS. He preceded her in death on February 15, 2011. They resided in Corning, Topeka, Holton, Goff, KS before moving to Hiawatha in 1959.

Eileen worked in various hospitals and clinics through her early career, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1972. She was proud to have graduated third highest in the class, being the oldest member of her class. She worked for Dr. Dewitt S. Lowe for several years until his retirement, and then worked for Oak Ridge Acres and Maples Heights Nursing Homes in Hiawatha. She remained a licensed nurse, working until she was 80 years old.

Eileen loved chocolate…lots of chocolate…every day of her life. She also enjoyed country music, while eating chocolate. Eileen loved Jesus and instilled a love of God in her children. She took great comfort in her daily readings from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. Eileen was member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Falls City, NE. She was an 80-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Eileen is survived by her 4 children, daughter Nancy Horne (Robert) of rural Alta Vista, KS: daughter Melodye Hathaway (Roger) of Hiawatha, KS; son Kent Kling of Ponca City, OK; and daughter Denise Wolney (Jim) of Hiawatha, KS. She is survived by 8 grandchildren:  LaDonna (Brad) Flynn of Pittsburg, KS: Scott (Lisa) Horne of rural Alta Vista, KS; Bartholomew (Lori) Kling of Ponca City, OK; Sabrina (James) Shults of Greeneville, TN; Amanda S. Coots of Atchison, KS; Jillian (Daniel) Darnall of Glasco, KS; Colby Gilbert of Glasco, KS; Tess Wolney of Hiawatha, KS; 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, infant son Walter Herbert Kling, grandson Jeremy Coots, infant sister Margaret Cawood, and sisters Geraldine Holden and Madelyn Bonte.

Services will be held on Thursday, July 7, at 11 a.m., at the Bethany United Church of Christ, Hiawatha, with Rev. Shane Spangler officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wetmore Cemetery.

Warren “Dean” Sharp, 92, of Holton, KS, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at The Pine in Holton, with family by his side. He was born January 27, 1930 in Clay Center, KS, the son of Albert Everett and Laura Mae (Conkright) Sharp.

Dean graduated from Clay Center High School in 1947. He was a member of the Holton community since 1991 and formerly of Council Bluffs, IA. He worked for over 34 years as a clerk for the Union Pacific Railroad, he was a self-employed carpenter and a farmer. In 1993, he began as Pastor for the Community of Christ; located from his home. He was a member of Jackson County Friends of Hospice.

Dean married JoAnn Marie Hannan on October 8, 1950 in Riley, KS. They celebrated over 71 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn of the home; son, David W. Sharp (Cindy) of Shidler, OK; sister, Lois J. Sharp-Winter of Topeka, KS; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Cathy Jo Chandler and Arlene Kay Cathey; son, Gary D. Sharp; 2 sisters, Wilma Arlene Sharp and Shirley Funk; brother, Loren Dale Sharp and a step-brother, Lloyd Johnson.

Clinton “CL” Loy (Ross) Burger, 45, of Netawaka, previously of Hoyt; gained his freedom from cancer on July 4th, 2022 at the University of Kansas St. Francis Campus in Topeka, Kansas. 

He was born February 26th, 1977 in Belleville, Kansas; the son of William Burger and Belinda (Diamond) Kneisler. 

CL attended Mankato Grade School along with Buhler and Manhattan School Districts. CL graduated from Royal Valley High School in 1995. 

He married Linda A. Hittle on November 7th, 1998, they remained married until May of 2020. This union gave them 3 children Jayme Conover August 17, 1997; Colby Burger February 16, 2000; and Zachery Burger September 28th, 2001.

Over the course of CL’s life, he obtained many trades and skills in his work. He worked in landscaping, HVAC, bail bonds, trucking, along with working for Goodyear Tire, KDOT, Long Trucking LLC in Wakarusa, KS, Gourmet Heating & Air in Mayetta, KS and most recently for Jackson County Road and Bridge in the Road Maintenance Department.

CL had a combined 15 years of service between Hoyt and Mayetta Fire Departments. He also served on the Thunder Hill Speedway Fire Crew and Jackson County EMS. 

CL married Angela Keithline on October 17, 2020. Uniting families he gained 2 sons and a daughter. Kenny Smith, Danny Smith, and Katie Keithline. 

His pride came from his kids and grandkids. CL loved coaching and watching them compete in sports, 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, spending time with friends and family as well as dirt track racing.

CL had gained many “adoptive” families over the years including his childhood friends and friends of his children. 

He is survived by his wife Angi of the home; Daughter Jayme (Kirby) Conover of Maryville, Mo; Sons Colby (Madison) Burger of Rossville; Zachery (Brailey) Burger of Topeka, Ks. Step Sons Kenny (Alexis) Smith of Netawaka; Danny (Janelle) Smith of Emporia, Ks; and Step-Daughter Katie Keithline of the home. His siblings; Sisters; Liane (Jim) Austin of New Orleans, LA; Bridget (Jason) Fulkerson of Hoyt, Ks; Brothers; Kenneth (Shelly) Kneisler of Wichita, Ks; Jason Ross of Hoyt, Ks and Martin Burger of Hoyt, Ks. Grandkids; Kohlton, Morgan and Kamden Conover; Layla and Payton Smith and with one on the way. His Mother Belinda Kneisler of Mankato, Ks. Mother and Father in-law Carol and Huck Keithline. Diann Marie Boldridge, 72, Topeka, Kansas left this earthly life to be with her Lord and Savior early Thursday morning, June 30, 2022 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas with Rev. Shirley Hermance, officiating.  Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery.  MASK ARE REQUIRED. Diann was born January 29, 1950 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Ellsworth and Mary Beadles Boldridge.  She attended Sumner and Potter Elementary Schools, graduating from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, Kansas.  She later attended and graduated from Highland Community Junior College, Highland, Kansas.

Diann began her working career February 17, 1969 as a clerk with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas and rising through the ranks in her department because of her skills and abilities.  After forty years she retired as manager of the underwritten claims area on January 29, 2010.

She and Arthur Smith were united in marriage and later divorced.

Diann was an active member of the historic Brown vs Board of Education St. Mark AME Church in Topeka, Kansas where she was known for baking pies for her church and the nursing home.

She enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling, canning vegetables from her garden, baking and most widely known for her carrot cake and lemon meringue pie.

Survivors left to cherish her memory are special friend William Gilliam, Emporia, KS; his daughter and granddaughter; an aunt, Esther Jones, Topeka, KS; two sisters, JoAnn Murray and Ethel Campbell, both of Atchison, KS; stepson, Randall Smith, Aurora, CO; stepdaughters, Andria Smith, of Texas and Alana Seelbach, Topeka, KS; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Claudene Berry and Mary Lou Boldridge and brothers, Irving Boldridge and Phillip Boldridge.

Joyce Coelho, 80 of Hiawatha Kansas passed away on June 30, 2022.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Willa Viera, brother Joseph Viera, daughter Renee Ponciano, and son-in-law Randy Korthanke.

She worked in medical records for Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hiawatha for many years.

She is survived by her children Joseph Coelho (Denise) of Tulare, CA., John Coelho of White Cloud, KS., Karen Korthanke of Robinson, KS., Lisa Costa (Mark) of Hiawatha, KS., and Michelle Branco (Brent) of Tulare, CA. 19 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren.

Family visitation to be held at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home 124 S. 7th Street Hiawatha, KS on Wednesday July 6th from 4:00 – 5:00 pm.

Verlene A. McNally, 83, of Onaga, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2022 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

She was born January 12, 1939 in the family home at Blaine, the daughter of Urban and Cecelia Roggenkamp O’Keeffe.  She graduated from Wheaton High School in 1957.

Verlene was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga, and for many years had made the banners at church for the different liturgical seasons.  She had also been a Cub Scout Leader and had served on the Election Board.

She was a homemaker, and had worked at Marje’s Flower Shop and the Onaga Library.

She married Donald T. McNally on June 22, 1957 at Wheaton.  He preceded her in death on February 19, 2002.

Verlene was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Michael McNally, a grandson, Mitchell Hermreck, a son-in-law, Dennis Hermreck, and two brothers, Jack O’Keefe and Bud O’Keefe.

Survivors include five sons, D. Thomas McNally, Jr. (Natalie), Flagstaff, AZ, Chuck McNally (Terri), Morrill, Patrick McNally (Cathy), Shawnee, Robert McNally (Trisha), Corning and Bill McNally (Pam), Manhattan; two daughters, Ann Hermreck, Onaga and Erin Henry (Chris), Seneca; one brother, Steve O’Keeffe, Topeka; three sisters, Julia Conaway, Topeka, and Marsha Bergman and Pam Kufahl, both of Onaga; nineteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 6th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga.  Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery in the Coal Creek Community.  Verlene will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga.  She will lie in state after 5:00 p.m. at the church where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m., followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m.  Memorials are suggested to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church or the Coal Creek Cemetery, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
