Harlan Dee Bauer was born May 12, 1946, and passed away March 27, 2021, at the age of 74. Harlan was born in Humboldt, NE, along with his twin brother Arlan, to Roy and Stella (Krenzel) Bauer. Like his siblings, he attended school in surrounding areas. He graduated with the class of 1964 from Powhattan High School.

Harlan’s siblings included, Donald (Lamonia), John (Leona), Harold (Carol), Darrell (Sara), Darlene Covert, Esther (Virgil) Koerperich, and twin brother Arlan (Debbie).

Harlan started work with Reece Construction Co, Scandia, KS, while he was still in high school. He worked under the supervision of his brother Harold (PeeWee) Bauer. After graduation he became a member of the Army National Guard in Hiawatha, KS. He was drafted to Vietnam in 1968 with the 25th Infantry Division. In 1969, Staff Sergeant Harlan Bauer was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces. He was also awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service in the Republic of Vietnam. In 1969, he returned to his home in Hiawatha, Kansas and returned to work with Reece Construction. Harlan retired from Reece Construction Co. as a Superintendent in 1987. In 1988, Harlan started his employment with the City of Hiawatha. He retired from the City of Hiawatha as the City Water Department Manager in 2010. He was a member of The Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha, KS.

Harlan adored his parents, cherished his siblings, and loved his nieces and nephews with all his heart. His dedication to his nieces and nephews was immeasurable. He was a strong influencer in the lives of his 27 nieces and nephews, 70 great-nieces and nephews, and 43 great-great nieces and nephews. And yes, he knew them all by name and by their birthdays, never missing an important event, and always there to lend advice and love. He was a second father to them all, and he will be dearly missed and honored by them all. He was a man that exemplified 1 Thessalonians 4:11; “… aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we have instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders…”

Harlan’s fascination for baseball was passed down to him from his father. In turn, he passed the love of the game to his extended family, especially by his following of the St. Louis Cardinals. Many games were watched at home, many games watched at the stadium with nieces and nephew tagging along, and many caps were worn celebrating his St. Louis Cardinals. Memories that will never be forgotten.

A celebration of Harlan’s life is planned for 10 am Saturday, April 3, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha, KS. Pastor Mike Dunaway will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha, with military honors a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Larry Lee Bowyer, lover of God and family, pastor, and part-time archeologist passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021.

Larry was born in Concordia, Kansas on November 24, 1937 to Ross L and Iva E (Campbell) Linton. Iva died of a blood clot three days after Larry was born. Because he had three significantly older siblings, Paul, Max, and Monna Jean (Breault), he was given to Ross’ sister, Mae and her husband, William V. Bowyer, who were not able to have children and had suffered miscarriages and a stillborn. They were so very grateful, and Larry became their one and only child. He described his childhood as blessed.

Larry grew up around southeastern Kansas living in Walnut, Moran, and Hepler helping his father with the Creamery. The family moved to Iola, Kansas, where he graduated from Iola Senior High School in May 1955. Apparently, he had to walk uphill both ways just to get there! He worked at a grocery store and saved his money (5 cents) because, again, as he frequently told his children, he had to buy everything with it including a 1950s Chevy. A brilliant man with a high IQ and great sense of humor, Larry then went to Allen County Community College where he took basic courses, but tragedy struck, and his father Will died shortly thereafter. He then transferred to K-State to become a nuclear engineer and was recruited by NASA. Before going to Ohio to work at Plum Brook Station during the summer of 1958, Larry heard his call to ministry at the Walton Foundry in Iola. Listening to that call he transferred to Baker University and began his biblical studies, receiving his Bachelor of Chemistry with a minor in religion in 1960.

Upon graduation, he moved to Boston to attend the oldest theological seminary of American Methodism, Boston University with friend Joe Brownrigg where he was highly influenced by Dr. Harrell F. Beck. There he met and married Katherine A. Fitzpatrick, marrying in 1963, and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Sacred Theology (AKA Master of Divinity). He would want you to know that in addition to serving churches and doing work study he would type papers for extra money as he was the first in his family to not only go to college but put himself through graduate school. Larry had always wanted to see the world and while Kathy and Larry spent their honeymoon in Kansas to be with Larry’s family, they saved and borrowed money to go with Dr. Beck on a mission/archeology trip to the Holyland including, Jerusalem, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, and several European countries. He would always have a special place in his heart for the areas where Jesus walked and went back on a ÒvacationsÓ to do more archeology digs and help bring to life the words of His ministry.

Larry and Kathy had two children Amy (b. 1966) and Lara (b. 1972) . Living the life of a United Methodist minister meant moving and serving different churches and communities. They served in Lisbon Falls, ME (1961-63), Union Congregational Church, Braintree, MA (1964), Centralia, KS (1964-1969); and Church of Our Savior Junction City (summer of 1969). They moved overseas where Larry received an accomplishment of intensive study at Ecumenical Institute at Chateau de Bossey a collaboration of the World Council of Churches and the University of Geneva (1969). They moved back and served at the Church of All Nations, Boston, MA (1969), then on to Kansas: Kansas City St. Marks (1970-1972); back again to New England! Moultonborough-Weirs Beach, NH (1972-1974); Enfield-Canaan-West Canaan, NH (1974-1979); Then back to Kansas where they served Gridley-Turkey Creek (1979-1973) and Cottonwood Falls-Saffordville-Bazaar (1983-1987).

In 1987 they moved to Effingham. Larry and Kathy got divorced January 1989. Larry and Beverly got married August 1989 and Bev’s children Jenni and Kristin joined Larry and Lara in Effingham. Larry, Bev and Kristin stayed until 1991 as Lara and Jenni both got married in 1990. The adventures continued: Cherryvale 1991-1993; Moline-Grenola 1993-1997; Sedan-Elgin-Peru and Cedar Vale-Wauneta 1997-2001; Larry retired in 2001 but came out of retirement to serve the churches of Frankfort 2001- 2002 and Easton 2003 - 2009. Larry and Bev had such a fondness for Effingham they would move back while serving Easton. There are so many achievements in his nearly 50 years of pastoring, ministry, and missions. He was a loving and caring man. Highlights are, of course, the baptisms, marriages, Bible studies (especially on Luke) performing the Maundy Thursday Service ÒIs it I?Ó, doing extensive mission work both locally and globally, and funerals, but, most of all listening to the Holy Spirit and getting to know God’s people while being an active part of each community.

Many may know of Larry’s passions of french-fries, chocolate covered peanuts, Keebler fudge sticks, popcorn, fried chicken, and pie, but it was through his creativity he would find a joy he would describe as God’s handiwork in all of life’s adventures. He would show this through paintings, writing children’s global VBS curriculum and a play ÒIs It I?Ó based on the Last Supper, and writing and singing songs. Other than a tall tale or a sermon, he made friends and loved sharing best through poetry and was active part of Writers and Poets groups, chronicling his experiences in Haiti, Kenya, and the history of Camp Chippewa though poems. In 2014 he received the Founders Award for the Kansas Folklore Society. Larry would also be creative when teaching bible at junior colleges and his words always meant so much when he would avidly send cards to family and friends.

Larry’s heart was overflowing with a desire for mission and church camp, and he excelled at bringing people together. From rebuilding communities after tornados, hurricanes, to bringing kids to Christ via Horse and Archeology camps at Camp Chippewa, Larry’s greatest pride was seeing God work in the accomplishments of others. You see, Larry was just a conduit. He rejoiced in people becoming who God created them to be. He led and encouraged dozens of mission trips and hundreds of people. Local mission work of the Bishops Round Up for Hunger, national mission trips to Red Bird Mission, tornado clean up in Topeka, rebuilding after Katrina and other hurricanes, and Native American Reservations, and international mission trips to Mexico, Haiti, and Africa (specifically Kenya) where he built schools, a hospital, rebuilt and built churches and took a bucket list trip with wife Beverly.

Larry’s other activities included playing scrabble or doing crossword puzzles, coin collecting, stamp collecting, model trains, and a penchant for a good western or anything on The History Channel. He loved books (getting paid in books after retirement for his work in a book store) and was a veracious reader particularly of Christianity and history - reading all of the Time Life series and remembering nearly each and every battle in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam War. He was inspired by Jesus, Martin Luther King, Dwight Eisenhower, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington. He loved going to any kind of sale and you could count on him to bring back a treasure that he saw that made him think of you.

His appreciation and wonder of nature was constant. From the smallest bud or planting, to birds or other animals he would see, he appreciated the intricate beauty God has designed. He relished planting gardens and was always excited for Spring to come; experiencing life with all of its blessing with his children and grandchildren helping him cultivate and plant the mother of all gardens. The time of new beginnings and plantings, of discovering what the dirt can do: ÒGod makes great things out of dirt and rocks,Ó Larry would often say. His rock was his absolute love of the gospel.

Preceding him in death were: His parents, brothers, and sister. He leaves to cherish his life and legacy: wife, Beverly (Randall), daughter Amy McComb (Robert); daughter Lara Strube (J.T.) and their children Samantha, Alicia, Cassandra and her daughter Brandilynn; Step-daughter Jenni Barton (Tracy) and their sons Gabriel & Gage (Lindsey) and their kiddos Emma & Owen; Step-daughter Kristin Njoroge (Matt) and their children Ann and Xavier and a host of fellow clergy, poets, parishioners, extended family (like J. Sue Bayer), and of course friends. He also loved his pets and his most recent lap buddy Oreo Cookie has been, of course, devastated.

An early riser, Larry loved sunrises and has wonderful memories of Easter sunrise services and would often wake up and begin reading his bible, pray for the people on his prayer list, and keep his journal up to date. He would write out the word PRAISE as an acronym, particularly when doing housework, et al: Prayers (Pray for anything/anyone that comes to your heart, Reflection (remember positive things around you or that happened to you – being thankful!), Action (begin your task), Inspiration (have fun - do a puzzle, play a game, listen for God’s voice), Scripture (read a passage from the bible), Eat or in EVERYTHING give thanks for Jesus is the Bread of Life. In ALL things give PRAISE to God. It is, then, not lost on any member of his family that he wanted to get an early seat for what must be the most spectacular celebration – Easter in Heaven.

All are invited to the Visitation to be held at Dishon Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton, KS on Good Friday, April 2nd, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. All are also welcome to his Celebration of Life to be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Effingham Union Church in Effingham, KS on Saturday April 3rd with a lunch from the church to follow. We hope you will all be sharing stories of Larry! A private burial of ashes will be performed later in Easton, KS. Dale Sheets, 85 passed away peacefully with dignity and pride in Topeka, KS March 26, 2021.

He was born in Everest, KS to Abram and Ruth Sheets. He was united in marriage to Marlene E. Sheets who predeceased him in death in 2013. He was a retired Kansas Highway Patrolman. Dale is survived by his children Elizabeth A. Lane (Rex), Rose M. Citro (Louis), and Diana L. Sheets and 3 grandchildren, Laura Lane, Catherine Lane, Joshua Fulton, and other family members and friends.

Funeral Rosary will be at the church at 10 a.m. and the Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday April 5, 2021 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Horton, KS.

Naomi Sue Cappleman, 85, of Holton, Kansas, joined the Saints in Heaven on Monday, March 29, 2021.

Naomi was born April 2, 1935 in Horton, Kansas.  She was the daughter of Lewis and Mabel (Walton) Routh, who both preceded her in death.

Naomi lived almost the entirety of her life on farms about 3 miles south of Muscotah, Kansas.  At the age of 55, Naomi attended nursing school and became an LPN and later an RN.  She gave compassionate care at various long-term facilities for many years.  At the age of 80, she renewed her RN license.

Naomi was a talented musician, who could play piano, organ and accordion.  She was a Charter Member of Lakeview Faith Chapel of Holton, Kansas, which she helped pioneer in 1983.  She was musician and Sunday School Teacher for many years.  She was still the musician until February 2021.

Nomi married Wayne Cappleman on March 16, 1951.  They celebrated their 70th Anniversary March 16, 2021.  Together they raised 5 children.  Survivors include: her husband, Wayne of The Pines in Holton, KS; her sister, Janie Olson of Scotts Valley, California; her sons, Steve Cappleman (Nancy) of Holton, Kansas, David Cappleman (Debbie) of Raymore, Missouri and Duane Cappleman of Ashford, Alabama; her daughter, Jennalee Riley (Shawn) of Holton, Kansas; her 7 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren. 

 In addition to her parents, Naomi was also preceded in death by, her son Paul Dean Cappleman on February 16, 2017,  infant grandson Derek William Wayne Cappleman on August 25, 1982 and her sister Marilyn Baird.

 Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow at the Muscotah Cemetery.  Naomi will lie in state beginning Wednesday, March 31, 2021 until 6:00 p.m.

Jean Kay Hershey Williams, 73, of Overland Park, Kansas died the morning of March 27, 2021.  She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.

Jean was born in Topeka, Kansas January 24, 1948.  She settled in Holton, Kansas with her parents Harry J. “Pat” Hershey, and Betty Hershey at the age of seven.  It was here that she began her career in journalism at Holton High School as the editor of the Holtonian.  Pursuit of this career led her to the University of Kansas in 1966.  Though she loved her Jayhawks, she was more eager to be an alumnus than a student.  She completed her Bachelor’s degree in three and a half years ready to move on to her job secured at the Leavenworth Times after interning there.

It was in Leavenworth that she met Norman C. Williams.  The two of them wed in April of 1972 and welcomed their son Patrick Williams near then end of that year.  Jean was never one to accept the prevalent idea at the time that a woman could not be a wife, mother, and focused on a career.  To prove it could be done she excelled at all three.  At the Leavenworth Times she grew through the ranks to become City Desk Editor, then Managing Editor before leaving and accepting a position writing for Special Sections at The Kansas City Star.  She went on to become Special Sections Editor at the Star before retiring in 2016.

Jean was always active in her community as well.  She was the first woman made a member of the Leavenworth Kansas Rotary Club.  She also joined the Unity Church in Leavenworth and served on its board before moving to Overland Park in 1998 where she continued with active involvement.  She maintained a spot on the board with the HOA of her condo complex until shortly before her passing.

Jean loved to travel and experience cultures new to her.  In retirement she was able to travel the U.S.A. and internationally with many close friends.  Her journeys led her to Mexico, Canada, Cuba, Singapore, the U.K., France, and Greece.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents Pat and Betty, and younger brother Joe D. Hershey, all of Holton, Kansas; as well as her husband Norm, of Leavenworth, Kansas.

She is survived by her sisters Susan Hershey of Holton, Kansas; and Linda Shaffer of Cascade, Colorado; as well as her son Patrick, daughter in law Heather, and grandson Nicholas all of Edmond, Oklahoma.

She will be remembered dearly, and missed deeply by many people who had the pleasure of getting to know her throughout her full and adventurous life.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, Kansas.  Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time.  Jean will lie in state at the funeral home Tuesday and Wednesday, March 30 and 31, until 6:00 p.m. Due to current public health conditions face masks are strongly requested by the family.  Private Family Burial will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to the Beck-Bookman Library c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. George Worley, 89, Atchison, Kansas, died Sunday, March 28, 2021, at Atchison Medicalodge.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, March 31, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church in Atchison with Rev. Michael Strickland officiating. A visitation with the family will be Tuesday, March 30th from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society and may be left in care of the funeral home.  

George was born on February 1st, 1932 at Northboro, Iowa to Claudius and Ruth (Mutchler) Worley. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1951.

He was joined the United States Marine Corps, November 20th, 1951 and is a Korean War Veteran.

He married Phyllis Ann (Pickering) Worley on June 15th, 1952. After the Marine Corps, George attended Saint Benedict’s College from 1954-1958. He played football at Saint Benedict’s and was selected Little All American offensive guard in 1958. George entered a career in coaching and teaching beginning in 1959. He started his career in Palco High School, Saint Mary’s High School, Wamego High School, and Atchison County Community High School, all in Kansas. In 1969, he was an assistant football coach, and assistant baseball coach at Northwest Missouri State University. In 1970, he became head wrestling coach at Northwest Missouri State University, and was the MIAA Wrestling coach of the year in 1975. In 1978, he became the head football, wrestling and assistance track coach at Atchison High School. He spent 20 years at Atchison High in coaching and teaching. He started two high school wrestling programs, ACCHS (1964) and Atchison High School (1978). George was inducted into the Kansas Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004, and inducted into the Saint Benedict’s Hall of fame in 2005.

George and Phyllis had two children, Mike and Mark. Surviving immediate family are his wife, Phyllis, brother, Floyd, sons Mike Worley (Becky) and Mark Worley (Rita), 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by sisters Mabel, Maxine, Geraldine, brother Johnny and granddaughter Jillian.

Michael David Harding, 68, of Mayetta, KS, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2021 after a courageous battle with Langerhans cell histiocytic sarcoma cancer. He was born August 4, 1952, the son of James A. and Dorothy (Gowan) Harding.

Michael graduated from Hoyt High School in 1970 and North Central Kansas Vo-Tech in 1973. He began work with Santa Fe Railroad in 1974 as a Carman. He also worked as a draftsman and supervisor before moving to the Business Car Department in 1991. He was general foreman of Business Cars for 20 years, retiring in 2011.

He married Betty Bourbon on September 6, 1975 in Jewell, KS. They celebrated over 45 ½ years of marriage on their farm in Mayetta, KS.

Michael is survived by: his wife Betty, of the home; his son, Shawn Michael Harding, wife Lea and their two kids Drake and Lauryn of Norton, KS; his daughter, Maren Nicole Coligan, her husband James and their two kids Elizabeth and Rebecca of Houston, TX; special “adopted” children Mathis Schmidt and Suzanna Sanchez; his brother, James Neil Harding (Mary Lou) of Mayetta, KS. his sisters, Rowena McCauley (Jim) of Mayetta, KS and Lequetta LeJuene (Tim) of McKinney, TX.

 Lucille (Riedel) Turpin Wilke, 94, of Troy, Kansas passed away Sunday, March 28, 2021. 

She was born on a farm near Leona, Kansas on April 12, 1926 to John and Katherine (Mattucks) Riedel. 

She was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bendena, Kansas. 

Lucille married Edgar Turpin on December 26, 1946. He preceded her in death on February 5, 1968. On April 20, 1978 she married Richard (Dick) Wilke. He preceded her in death on September 24, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Melvin Riedel and a sister, Dorothy Nigus. 

She is survived by two sons; Harold (Pam) Turpin, Kent, Washington, John (Dennise) Turpin, Troy, Kansas, two daughters; Donna Streib, Hiawatha, Kansas, Janie (Jerry) Johnson, Troy, Kansas, two step-sons, Alan (Deb) Wilke, Lake Alfred, Florida, Larry (Lisa) Wilke, Emporia, Kansas, two step-daughters; Margie (Claude) Miller, St. Joseph, Missouri, Peggy (Julian) Nelson, Troy, Kansas; nine grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 12 step-great grandchildren and one on the way. 

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 31, at  St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bendena, Kansas, with visitation from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. prior to service. Face masks are strongly encouraged.

Patricia Travis, 71, of Falls City, NE, passed away March 25, 2021 at Lincoln, NE. She was born July 18, 1949 at St. Joseph, MO to John and Lola (Reynolds) Anno.

She married Harry Travis on September 26, 1970 at Waycross, GA

Patricia was raised at Rulo and graduated Falls City High School in 1969. When married the couple established their home in Waycross, moving to Galveston, TX, then to Groves, TX and finally to Falls City. She worked at Falls City Care Center, Golden Eagle Casino and also drove a truck with her husband. She retired in 2019. She enjoyed doing crafts, her grandchildren’s sports, gardening, nature and loved all animals. Her biggest joy was her family and she was a mom to everyone.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Harry of Falls City, children, Michelle Gentry and her significant other, Jason Killingsworth of Lincoln, John and his significant other, Susie Walker of Casper, WY, Todd and his wife Kathy of Forty Fort, PA, parents, John and Lola Anno of Rulo, brothers, Darrell Anno of Rulo, Jerry Anno of Humboldt, Darren Anno and his wife Emily of Lincoln, sisters, Martha Davis and her husband Richard of Humboldt, Fran Kuker and her husband Rick of Shubert, fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons, Richard and Harry.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor Eric Biehl officiating.

Brenda Ann Baker, 60, of Horton, KS, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 28, 2021 at the Mission Village Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the last year.

Survivors include her husband Allen of the home, sons; Cody Baker of Savannah, MO and Casey Baker of Troy, KS, daughter; Cortney Stevenson of Smithville, MO, mother; Shirley Hammersmith of Horton, KS, sisters; Karla Rush of Highland, KS and Kim Ross of Olsburg, KS, grandchildren; Carlie and Rylie Baker, Gunnar, Aspen, and Emery Stevenson, Kynley Baker, Ashtyn and Jayden Wall, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Velven Jackson York Jr.,88, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 in Seneca, Kansas.

He was born on August 27, 1932 in Buckeye, Texas, the son of Velven York Sr. and Rose Wood York. He attended school in Markham, Texas, and later received his GED while in the military.

Joining the Air Force as a young man, he served 22 years. While he was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, he met Mary Ann Taylor of Seneca, where she was working as a nurse. They married on November 30, 1961 in Bangor, Maine. In 1963, they moved to Germany when Velven was transferred to Hahn Air Force Base. They returned to the States in 1966 to McCord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington. In 1970, they again went overseas to Alconbury Air Force Base in England. Velven retired from the Air Force in 1972 and they moved to Seneca. While living in Seneca, they managed the Harsh Drugstore, the Seneca Variety Store, and helped build Country View Estates in Seneca.

He belonged to the Earl Taylor Post 21 of the American Legion and attended countless ballgames watching his sons. He enjoyed gardening, Velven shared his abundant produce with friends. He also loved his dogs and could be seen walking one around town. His other hobbies included golfing and bowling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Mary Ann (Taylor) York.

He is survived by his children, Leisa Hartley (Jimmy Hartley) of Lizella, Georgia, Sherrian McAnn (Ralph) Fuentes of San Antonio, Texas, Velven (Jack) York III of Spokane, Washington, and David (Rhonda) York of Leavenworth, Kansas. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Chuck Hartley, Amanda McAnn, Taylor York, and Emma York; and his great-grandchildren, Diane Gomez and Joseph Medellin.

A Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, March 30th from 6 to 7 PM at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

The funeral service is Wednesday March 31, 2021 at 11 AM at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Following the service, internment will be at the Seneca City Cemetery, with military honors.

Gary Allen Swendson, 76, of rural Horton, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

He was born on July 28, 1944 in Horton, Kansas the son of Kenneth and Nellie Kemp Swendson. Gary attended the Brush Creek country grade school and graduated from A.C.C.H.S. in 1963. He then joined the Kansas National Guard in 1963 with the 69th Brigade in Holton, Kansas. They were called to active duty in 1968 and served at Fort Carson, Colorado until April of 1969 when he received his honorable discharge.

Gary lived all his life in Atchison County, where he farmed, worked for Hammersmith's, Gaskell Bolt, Ohlsen's Construction, drove the school bus for U.S.D. 377 before working for the Atchison County Road and Bridge and Transfer Station until he retired after twenty one years. He was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree and the Horton American Legion. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing and never knew a stranger and loved to talk. On September 2, 1967 he married Carol Richling at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas.  Gary and Carol lived all their married life on their farm southeast of Horton. Gary joined the catholic church in April of 1986. To this union three sons were born Todd, Bradly and Jeff.

Survivors include his wife, Carol of 53 years of the home; two sons, Todd Swendson of Horton, Kansas and Jeff (Michelle) Swendson of Horton, Kansas; two granddaughters, Kaylynn (Andrew) Oliver of Gardner, Kansas and Kelsey (Taylor) Anderson of Kansas City, Missouri; sister, Sharon Delzeit of Everest, Kansas; three brothers, Larry (Dorothy) Swendson of Horton, Kansas, Harry (Mary) Swendson of Atchison, Kansas and Steve (Kay) Swendson of Effingham, Kansas; nineteen nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Bradly Swendson on July 14, 1984 and an infant sister, Carol Swendson.

Jerry D. Euler, 82, of Wathena, Kansas died Monday, March 22, 2021 at a local hospital.  

Jerry was born on January 21, 1939 in Wathena, Kansas to Emmett and Vera (Pfaffly) Euler.  He graduated from Wathena High School in 1957.  Jerry was a car salesman for most of his working life.  He was a veteran.  

He is a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church, Moila Temple, St. Joseph Valley Scottish Rite, Past Commander Moila Legion Of Honor – all of St. Joseph, Missouri  

Past Commander of the American Legion Post #161, Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge # 64 AF/AM all of Wathena, Kansas  

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert Euler and a sister, Rosa Lee Dickens.

Nadine Elaine Wade, 64, of Hiawatha, KS, died peacefully on March 19, 2021 in her home surrounded by her family.

Nadine was born July 11, 1956 in Atchison, KS. She worked as a nurse in excess of 30 years and truly enjoyed her time as a hospice nurse. Nadine was a devout Catholic and spent much of her retirement praying for family and friends as well as watching the squirrels and birds that she loved. 

Nadine is survived by her husband Leigh of Hiawatha; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Mike Huckaby of Hiawatha;  daughter and son-in-law Angela and Jeremy Milnes of Independence, MO; daughters Michelle Stahl of Wathena, Joyce Cooke of Perris, CA, Patricia Barnett of Springfield, MO; and son Ervin Schultz and wife of Blue Springs, MO; sisters Debbie Vandiver, Terri Banks, Sarah Cummings; and brother John Foster all of Atchison, brother Mike Foster of St. Paul, KS; and sister Vinita Ramsey of Haskell, OK.

Nadine is preceded in death by her parents, Joan Breuer and Wayne Foster; brother Sam Foster; and late husband Ervin Schultz.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 27th at 11 am at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hiawatha.

Robert "Bob" Eugene Munson, of Cozad formerly of Humboldt, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at the Bryan LGH Medical Center East in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 80.  Bob was born on August 11, 1940, in Humboldt, Nebraska to Robert Frank and Goldie Mae (Birch) Munson.  He was raised in Humboldt where he received his schooling and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1958.  On August 12, 1961, Bob was united in marriage to Juletta Mae Warner by Rev. Ward Merritt in Humboldt, Nebraska.  To this union four children, Frank, Barbara, Peggy and Steven were born.  Bob began his career with the O.A. Cooper Company in 1958 and was later transferred to Cozad, Nebraska to be the superintendent at the Feed Mill.  He retired from ADM in 2005 after 47 years of dedicated service to the company.  Bob was an avid fisherman and loved reading history books.  His grandkids always made sure he had plenty of history books.  He also enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching football, especially the Huskers and the Broncos.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Mae Munson of Cozad, NE; daughters, Barbara Gascho and husband Earl of Palmer, TX; Peggy Munson of Cozad, NE; son Steve Munson of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister Marie Rokey of Kansas and brother-in-law, Ron Warner of South Dakota, grandchildren, Amy (Jeremy) Fedderson of Cozad, Heather Gascho of Texas, Taylor (Sophia) Fletcher of Hastings, Dylan (Sarah) Munson of Lincoln, great-granddaughter, Zoey Feddersen of Cozad, step-grandchildren, Michael (Janice) McGinnis, Nathaniel McGinnis, step-great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Jazlyn, Kira and Braxton of South Dakota and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Frank Allen Munson, a sister Darlene Mattan, a brother Don Munson, grandson Chance Gascho, daughter-in-law  Kelly Munson, brother-in-law Gary Warner, sister-in-law Lois Munson and step-grandson Anthony McGinnis.

Ann E. Baumann, 64, of Atchison, KS died Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at her home.

Ann was born on April 18, 1956 in Atchison, KS the daughter of Verle W. and Dorothy “Pat” (Williamson) Baumann.  She graduated from Mt. St. Scholastica.  Ann worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and finished her work career as a guard at the Kansas Prison System in Lansing, KS.  She enjoyed all sports especially horseback riding, golf, softball, and fishing.  One thrill for her was showing her horse, Prince Carlos, at the American Royal Horse Show in Kansas City, MO. Ann was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, and she made it known to one and all not to call her during the Chiefs games.  

Ann was married to Cindy Belles and together they raised Yorkie dogs and owned and operated the Doggy Do Kennel & Kuts in Atchison, KS.  Survivors include her spouse, Cindy Belles, of the home, sisters; Maureen Henzler, Topeka, KS, Kari Baumann, Washington, DC, Sue Van Gordon, Atchison, KS, Martha Burton, Holt, MO, Annette Kimbrel, Silex, MO, and Crissy Baumann, Leavenworth, KS, and brothers; Michael Baumann, Sarasota, FL, Mark Baumann, Navan, Ireland, and Tony Baumann, Leavenworth, KS, a step-son, DuWayne Belles, Topeka, KS and many nieces and nephews.

Jeanie M. Evans, 68, of Effingham, Kansas died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital from a reaction to the Covid vaccine.

Jeanie was born on Sept. 20, 1952 in San Diego, CA the daughter of Frank and Jessie L. (Hartzfeld) Myer.  She graduated from Pleasanton High School, Pleasanton, KS.  She had worked various places including as the admitting clerk for Atchison Hospital, as a secretary for Linn-Valley Lakes Property, and even attended truck driving school. She presently worked as a clerk for the Main Street Food & Fuel, Effingham, KS and was serving on the Effingham City Council.  Jeanie enjoyed bowling, playing softball, water sports, teasing people, and especially spending time with friends, grandchildren and family.

Survivors include three sons Heath Umphenour, Atchison, KS, Trenton Umphenour, and Colt Umphenour, both of Pleasanton, KS, two daughters Randell (Tim) Vanderweide, Atchison, KS, and Taylor (Josh) Snow, Pleasanton, KS, a brother Frank (Pam) Myer, Jr, St. Joseph, MO and three sisters Cathy (Larry)Harvey, Rushville, MO, Sandra (Russ) Streeter, DeKalb, MO, and Rhonda (Joe) Snyder, Effingham, KS, fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Alice C. “Tudy” Mills, 83, Atchison, Kansas died Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri.

Graveside services will be Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 1:30 P.M. at Sumner Cemetery.  Memorial contributions are suggested to Atchison Humane Society and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with whom final arrangements have been entrusted.

Alice was born October 3, 1937 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Oscar B. and Flossie May (Allen) Martin.  She attended schools in both Atchison and Everest, Kansas.

Alice was a homemaker and a mother and grandmother.  In her spare time she enjoyed watching the Kansas City Royals baseball and Kansas City Chiefs football, watching world news and keeping an eye on the stock market and crocheting.

Survivors include three daughters, Penny Mills, Atchison, KS; Vickie Dorman, West Monroe, LA; Tracy Shephard, Bonner Springs, KS; five sons, Mike (Theresa) Mills, Atchison, KS; Bruce (Cathy) Mills, St. Joe, MO; Larry Mills, State of Kansas; Gary (Sonny) Mills, Atchison, KS; Terry Mills, Easton, KS; two aunts, Karla Allen and Anna Allen; a step-son, Marvin Mills, Honduras; twenty seven grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and numerous foster grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Flossie Martin; step-father, Leigh Crosswhite; a son, Richie Mills; a step-son, Delane Mills and a brother, Phillip “Butch” Martin.

Regis Lawrence Koelzer, 89, of Axtell, Kansas passed away, with his family by his side, on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Regis was born on March 27, 1931 to Allie and Irene (Hammes) Koelzer on the family farm north of Baileyville. He attended school in Baileyville. Afterwards, he helped his father on the farm, and worked part-time for Uhlig & Reece and also, for Jim Markley. On January 25, 1952 he was drafted into the US Army; and reported to Camp Roberts in California for six weeks of basic training. He spent two months at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey. During the Korean War, he was stationed in Salzburg, Austria. He returned home from the service on December 23, 1953 and returned to farming.

He married Lucille Rottinghaus on February 10, 1958 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. After a few years of living in Baileyville, they bought a farm near Axtell in 1962. Along with farming, Regis ran the bulldozer and road grader for 40 years for the Murray Township. He belonged to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, where he served on the school board, parish council and was also a lay minister. He was a member of the Fourth Degree Ponce de Leon Assembly and the Axtell Knights of Columbus Council #1163. He was commander of the American Legion Post 214 and served as co-chairman when the new legion was built. For 15 years, Regis was part owner in the Axtell Grain Company.

Regis loved working outside on the farm; but you could also catch him enjoying a good card game.

Regis was preceded in death by an infant son, Ronnie on January 28, 1960, his parents, brothers, Richard, Elmer and Gilbert; and sisters, Marceil Haverkamp, Mildred Stallbaumer, Evelyn Heiman, Leona Bergman, Eileen Koelzer and Audrey Mueting.

He is survived by his wife Lucille and seven children, Donna Koelzer of Manhattan, Joyce (Kent) Polson of Vliets, Joan (Tim) Buessing of Axtell, Lisa (Bob) Fangman of Ottawa, Bruce Koelzer of Axtell, Dean Koelzer of Silver Lake and Sandy (Bill) Buessing of Axtell; his sister, Laverne Uphaus of Topeka; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on his 90th Birthday, Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10 AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell. Regis will be laid to rest in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Baileyville. Rosaries will be held on Friday, March 26th, with an afternoon rosary at 2 PM at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, and an evening rosary at 7:30 PM at St Michael’s Church in Axtell.

John Coatney, age 66 of Peru, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn.

Survivors include his wife Penny of Peru; sons Quentin of Falls City, Kiefer (Logan) of Auburn, Alex of Peru; grandson Holden; granddaughter Karter; mother Marilyn Coatney of Peru; father-in-law Fay “Punk” Smith of Hamburg, IA; siblings Mark (Laurie) Coatney of Marble Falls, TX, Diane (Dennis) Thomas of Kenosha, WI, Scott (Debbie) Coatney of Peru; sisters-in-law Faye (Lester) Bruce of Hamburg, IA, Angie Smith-Warren of Concord, NH, Suki (Jay) Fischer of Auburn, Natasha “Niki” Nennemann of Hamburg, IA; brother-in-law Roy “Bub” (Amy) Smith of Hamburg, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service will be Tuesday, March 30, 10:00 a.m. at Al Wheeler Activity Center in Peru. Marie Ester (Steinmetz) Brownlee passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas at the age of 94. She was born on April 8, 1926 in Hardin, Montana to Emanual Steinmetz and Elizabeth (Michael) Steinmetz. Her family was of Volga German descent, having immigrated to the United States from Dietel, Russia. Marie spent her early years in Hardin and later moved with her family to Toppenish, Washington.

Around the age of 12, Marie met her lifelong sweetheart and future husband, Harry C. Brownlee. They were married by a Justice of the Peace on September 26, 1944 at a gas station in Granger, Washington, for 39 cents. They lived in the Toppenish/Wapato area of Eastern Washington for several years before moving to South Prairie, Washington. They later purchased a home in Buckley.

Marie worked for the Rainier School for the Disabled for nearly 30 years. Following her retirement, Marie and Harry returned to the Yakima Valley, where they settled in Sunnyside and devoted themselves to spending time with family. They continued to pursue their many hobbies and interests, including gardening and square dancing. They joined the Alfalfa and Buena Grange halls and took many camping trips to the beach and the mountains.

Marie was an excellent cook, baker and canner. At the conclusion of every Sunday lunch, Harry would lovingly say, “That was delicious, Maryline. You can stay another week.” She was known for her peanut brittle and lemon meringue pie, holiday cookie trays, homemade jams, pickles, and sauerkraut.

The hardships of Marie’s early life inspired in her a need to create and be surrounded by beauty. She was a gifted gardener and spent many joy-filled hours tending her plants. She especially loved peonies, iris, and tulips. She learned to crochet as a young girl and throughout her life produced many beautiful and useful handmade objects for loved ones and strangers. Late in her life, she was particularly known for the brightly-colored “scrubbies” she made and sold around town. Despite having left school in the 8th grade, she had a keen mind for business when it came to her craftwork. Marie knew a person could never have enough plants or yarn.

When Harry passed away in 2003, Marie relocated to Sabetha, Kansas to remain near her family. At the age of 80, she embraced, and was welcomed by, a new community. She joined the Berwick Home Extension Unit and the Sabetha Hospital Guild. Marie lived the last decade of her life at the Apostolic Christian Home, where she continued her tradition of making and sharing sweet treats and handmade items with neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Edward Steinmetz; sister, Jean Price Smith, and infant brother, Emanuel Steinmetz.

Marie is survived by her son, Gary L. Brownlee and his wife, Norma of Sabetha, Kansas; her grandson, Scott Brownlee (Lisa) of Fairview, Kansas; her granddaughters, Michelle Brownlee (Joel) of Kansas City, Missouri and Faith Smeenk (Chris) of Richland, Washington; her great-grandchildren, Brandon and Kamden Brownlee, Cody, Clayton and Ryan Smeenk, Martin (Melissa) and Michael (Lenora) Villa, Mikaila Goerig, and Sawyer Villa; and her brother, Donald Steinmetz (Linnea) of Buckley, Washington.

A private memorial service will be held in Sabetha, Kansas later this spring. Inurnment with be at the Sabetha Cemetery. Geraldine “Jerrie” Bernadine Huerter, 93, passed away peacefully at Life Care Center of Seneca, on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, surrounded by family.

Jerrie was born to Henry B. and Mary J. Rethman Enneking, on September 4, 1927 on a farm in rural Seneca. She attended Sts. Peter & Paul School; graduating from Sts. Peter & Paul High with the class of 1945. She married James J. Huerter on September 3, 1946 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. The couple made their home in the Kelly community, and were members of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. In 2008, Jerrie suffered a stroke, and in 2010 moved to Seneca; where she was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Jerrie was a volunteer at the Sts. Peter & Paul Mission Center for many years.

Jerrie spent many years as a homemaker, growing a large garden and canning her produce for the winter months. She loved to cook and bake and was always trying new recipes. She was a waitress at the Lakeside Steakhouse and later at Bob’s Sirloin Room. She was also employed by SRS as a caregiver. Jim and Jerrie celebrated 74 ½ years of marriage.

Jerrie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and belonged to the Altar Society. She enjoyed spending time and fishing with family and friends at the “pond;” and selling her produce at the Farmers Market. She also was an avid antique collector.

Besides parents, preceded in death by a great- grandson, Dyllon Butrick on September 12, 2012; her brothers, Ronald C. Enneking on October 28, 2003 and Robert H. Enneking on May 9, 2007; and her sisters, Joan M. “Babe” Palmer on July 22, 2007 and Virginia Roggenkamp on May 13, 2015.

She is survived by her husband, Jim of the home; and her children, Connie (Roger) Battin of Hiawatha, James Jr (Ann) Huerter of Topeka, Gary (Lori) Huerter of Seneca, Ronnie Huerter of Seneca; Cindy (Dan) Carlson of Seneca, Kelli (Greg) Olberding of Seneca; DeAnn (Larry) Herberholz of Scottsboro, Alabama; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild on the way.

Jerrie will lie in state at the Lauer Funeral Home on Thursday, March 25th from 8AM-8PM. The Funeral Mass for Jerrie will be held on Friday, March 26, 2021; at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca; a rosary will be prayed at 10 AM, prior to the Mass. Burial will be in St. Bede’s Cemetery in Kelly.

Evelyn Janice Allen, 86, of Valley Falls, KS, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2021 at her home; with family by her side. She was born January 14, 1935 in Thurston, NE, the daughter of Seth Thomas Blanchard and Mabel Emma (Wilson) Allen.

Evelyn graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1953 and from Cosmetology school in Topeka. She was owner and operator of Evelyn’s Hair and Skin in Valley Falls for many years. She also had worked as a secretary for Knox Supply in Topeka.

Evelyn married Harold Raymond Allen on January 17, 1953 in Valley Falls. They celebrated over 62 years of marriage before his passing on February 26 2016.

She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jody Allen; a great-granddaughter, Grace Stein; 3 sisters, Doris Moore, June Brown and Patsy Frommer and 7 brothers, John, Don, Dick, Lloyd, Harold, Tom and Roy Allen.

Survivors include 6 children, Sandra Schonfeldt (John) of Ozawkie, KS, Carey Kern of Leavenworth, KS, Tom Allen (Christie), Linda Foley (Rex), Ed Allen (Shirley) and Curt Allen (Heather) all of Valley Falls, KS and 2 sisters, Eunice Osburn of Sabetha, KS and Lois Kientz of Valley Falls, KS; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Barbara Jean (Allen) Walker, 81 years of age, of Falls City passed away Sunday, March 21, 2021 at the Falls City Care Center in Falls City. She was born on October 22, 1939 in Auburn, the third of seven to Harold and Helen (Millhouse) Allen. Barbara graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in Chillicothe, Missouri in 1957. She married Jerry Walker on October 22, 1959 and to this union were born Princess Lynn and Mark Alan. They later divorced. Barbara later met Irvin “Beaux” Roberts and they had one child, Paula Jean. She had many jobs from waitressing to Campbell’s Soup in Tecumseh. Barbara was best known for childcare for family members and babysat for many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She was a biscuit maker for Hardee’s and a donut maker for Casey’s where she retired in 2002.

Barbara is survived by three children, Princess Hestermann and husband Gary of Humboldt, Mark Walker and wife Sharon of Falls City, Paula Henderson of Falls City; siblings, Fran Henne of Nebraska City, Jim Allen and wife Charlotte of Tecumseh, Mary Haack and husband Raymond of Johnson, Helen Ballue and husband Robert of Overton; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carlene Maddox; brother, Harold Ray Allen Jr.; brother-in-law, Jerry Henne; ex-husband, Jerry; and special friend, Irvin “Beaux” Roberts.

Scott Douglas Keller, Sr., 64, of Atchison, died March 21, 2021, at University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.

Caroline "Louise" McDaniel, 96 of Marysville, Kansas, formerly of Muscotah, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at Cambridge Place Care in Marysville, Kansas.

She was born on February 16, 1925 in Muscotah, Kansas the daughter of Herman and Mabel Liggatt Henning. Louise worked for the Muscotah Telephone Company and Justin Manufacturing Company before retiring. She was a member of the Muscotah United Church, Horton VFW Auxiliary and the Muscotah 1/2 Century Club. On December 9, 1942 she married Albert McDaniel at the Lutheran Parsonage in Nortonville, Kansas.

She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Ann and husband Junior Ray of Montrose, Colorado; three grandchildren, Neil Ray and Kyle Ray both of Montrose, Colorado and Sonya Stohs of Topeka, Kansas; three great grandchildren, Broderick Stohs, Grace Stohs and Elijah Ray. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, Lola Shafer,  infant twins, Amy and Emma Henning and three brothers, Alvin, Lloyd and George Henning.

Michelle Lynn Wessel, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, left this world to join Our Heavenly Father on March 17, 2021. She was born in Seneca, KS on September 25, 1974 to Clet and Mary Jane Wessel.  Michelle grew up in Salem and graduated 1993 from Sacred Heart in Falls City where she lettered in track and volleyball and was a member of the 4H club.  As a Senior in high school, Michelle was involved in a motor vehicle accident resulting in severe head trauma and a severed spinal cord and other numerous injuries. She completed six months of rehabilitation at Madonna Rehab in Lincoln. Despite the new challenges, Michelle persistently achieved her goal of continuing her education. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the College of St. Mary’s in Omaha in 1997 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health Information Management. Michelle used her degree in her employment with Bryan LGH for 10 years and currently with St. Elizabeth Hospital for approximately 13 years. She was a member of the American Health Information Management Association and the National Cancer Registrars Association and several other professional organizations.

Michelle was admired for her independence, strong will and loyalty. She had a kind, honest, and generous nature that was exhibited by her many self-less acts and contributions.  She routinely donated to the Sacred Heart School, St. Mary’s College, the ASPCA, the Humane Society, several food pantries, homeless shelters, St. Jude’s, various Veterans organizations, the CHI Heart Foundation, and many more. Michelle also promoted the MADD organization where she conducted presentations and promoted awareness. She was known for her other volunteer work with the North American Martyrs School and the mentoring of various neighborhood children.

Michelle greatly enjoyed sewing, baking, experimenting with recipes, playing her keyboard and beating everyone at pool. She constantly had sewing projects for the family and was currently making masks for anyone and everyone that wanted them.  She was known as the Cheesecake Queen and her homemade Eggnog was awarded as a family favorite.  Michelle also spent a lot of time as an extreme advocate for recycling.  She believed she could single-handedly impact the world with her recycling efforts.  She collected any and all recyclables, and strongly encouraged everyone to do their part for the environment. 

Michelle’s greatest loves were her kitty boy, Bo, and her nieces and nephews. She is Survived by her mother, Mary Jane Wessel, her siblings, Edward (Andrea) Wessel of Crocker, MO; Melanie Rieger of Falls City, NE; Janelle (Dave) Sterling of Iola, KS; nieces Mickaela Wessel, Jessica Smith, Samantha Wessel, Summer Erickson; nephews Blake Gilkerson; Gabriel Canonico, Elijah Canonico, Beau Erickson, and Garrett Reiger and many Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and Friends.

She was Preceded in death by her father, Cletus Wessel ; grandparents Barbara Marie and Henry Buessing; Gertrude and George Meggers; Henry Wessel; and cousins, Barbara Esselborn, Nicholas Stallbaumer and Brenda Thomas.

Michael Carroll Holcomb, 58, of Holton, KS, passed away Friday, March 19, 2021 at his home, with family by his side; after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 29, 1963 in Elkin, N.C., the son of Fred C. and Carol (Vestal) Holcomb.

Michael graduated from North Wilkes High School at Hays, N.C. in 1981. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1983 to 1989. He lived most of his life in Thurmond, N.C.; he moved to Holton in 1994. Michael was a machinist for BNSF Railway in Topeka for 22 years; retiring in 2019. 

He was a member of I.A.M. Local Lodge #378 in Topeka, American Legion Post 44 and Holton American Legion Riders.

Michael married Alice Faye Holcomb on April 5, 1985 in Dawson Springs, KY. She preceded him in death on October 7, 2020; after 35 years of marriage.

Survivors include 3 sons, Shane Duncan (Joy) of Topeka, KS, Clinton Duncan of Holton, KS and Jason Duncan (Marty) of Morton’s Gap, KY; daughter, Ashley Boyle of Hiawatha, KS; sister, Maj Anne Wood (Tim) of Thurmond, N.C.; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.

Randy L. Speckmann was born to Edward and Wilma (Rippe) on August 14, 1955 in Tecumseh, Nebraska.  He was baptized and confirmed at Martin Luther Church, rural Johnson, Nebraska.  Randy grew up near rural Elk Creek.  The youngest of five, he was an avid farmer and dog lover from a young age.  Like many young boys he spent his summers putting up hay and getting into shenanigans while riding bikes with the neighbor boys. Some of Randy's fondest memories were of times spent with the numerous Speckmann and Rippe cousins over monthly birthday get-togethers and Christmas gatherings.  Many of his teachers identified his strengths and weaknesses early telling Randy that they would take care of his school art projects and he should "just focus on math." 

Come high school Randy would excel in basketball not only leading his team to many victories, but also attracting the eye of a beautiful cheerleader, Elaine.  Randy's speed and handling were not just reserved for the basketball court; rather, he often tested the "guidelines" of speed limits throughout the county--a trait he happily passed on to Keri. Randy graduated as an Elk Creek Antler in the spring of 1973. Randy went on to hold numerous jobs, including a milk truck driver, semi-driver, bartender, and custom harvester.  He married the love of his life in 1975. Randy & Elaine lived in rural Elk Creek and were the hosts of many late-night gatherings featuring a few cold beverages & Saturday Night Live.

Randy & Elaine moved from Elk Creek to the farm in 1978 where they would raise two daughters, Crystal and Keri, and built the family farm.  Randy would find a new passion and many would say his ultimate calling in 1990 while attending the Worldwide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, IA in March of that year.  From that first sale, where no one really knew what they were doing, to the current day, Randy and Elaine built a business staffed by close friends and family.  The success of that 31-year business was built in part by Randy's activity in the community.   He was a proud Antler Alumni participating in the annual Alumni plays, a one-time-never-again alumni football game, and the annual Elk Creek Road Rally.  Randy came to know most of eastern Nebraska prior to his auction days playing fast pitch (and then slow pitch) softball, officiating high school basketball and football games, and eventually going on to coach girls’ basketball.    When Randy and Elaine didn't have a sale, Randy thoroughly enjoyed pheasant and quail hunting with his Vizsla hunting dogs.

The business of farming, auctioneering, and raising a family brought him into many different roles.  He served on the Johnson-Brock Board of Education for eight years, four of those as board president.  He was also a member of the Auburn German Mutual Board and was active for many years in the Elk Creek Men's Club and Volunteer Fire Department.  Most recently, Randy served on the Board of the Tecumseh Federal Bank.  Randy also believed strongly in serving in the church.  Growing up in a musical family, he loved singing in the church choir.  He also served as a member and President of the Martin Luther Church council for many years and loved bringing the auction business and church together through the Martin Luther Church Consignment Auctions as well as post auction gatherings in the garage with fellow congregation members. Throughout it all, Randy's love for farming was unwavering.  He took many lessons from his father and other family members and passed those down to his children and grandchildren. He was passionate about caring for his livestock and always grateful for the many mentors in the livestock community who helped guide him along the way.   Following in the footsteps of those before him, Randy never missed an opportunity to teach those around him.   From coaching MIT youth basketball teams to varsity girls’ basketball, mentoring and guiding budding auctioneers, and guiding his daughters through life's challenges and tribulations, Randy was "like a dad" to so many.  Randy passed away March 18, 2021 and will deeply missed by all who knew him.

Randy is preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brother-in-law Vernel and Frank Schumacher and Elaine Schmiegelow, brother Dean Speckmann, cousin Laverne Speckmann, nephew Cory Stuart, parents-in-law, Glenn and Ellen Beethe, and numerous other family members and close friends.  

He is survived by his loving wife and work partner, Elaine (Beethe) Speckmann, daughters and sons-in-law Crystal and Nathan Neihoff and grandsons Edward Jackson and William Jase and Keri and Chase Rasby and grandson Corbyn, sister and brother-in-law, Donita and Don Stuart, nieces  Darcy and Shea Thompson, Julie and Eric Londeen and Gina and Randy Snearly, brother-in-law, Vernon Schmiegelow, nephews, Brent Schmiegelow and Heather Schmiegelow,  Lee and Kylie Schumacher and Jay and Angie Schumacher and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Randy and Glenna Bohling, Mike Beethe and Harlan and Lisa Beethe and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends and work colleagues.                                                        

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm. Monday, March 22, 2021 at the Martin Luther Church, rural Johnson, Nebraska with Rev. Ken Tubbesing officiating. The service will also be live streamed on the Wherry Mortuary/Wherry Monument Facebook page. Masks are recommended.

William Raymond “Bill” Klatt, 67, of Valley Falls, KS, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at his home with his wife by his side. He was born March 7, 1954 in McPherson, KS, the son of Raymond William and Laura (Pauls) Klatt.

 Bill graduated from Moundridge High School in 1972, and continued his education graduating from Kansas State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He had lived in Valley Falls for 8 years, and previously in McPherson, KS. In his younger years, Bill was Rancher for 2 years at Crested Butte and Gunnison, CO. He later became a Federal Meat Grader working in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Lastly, he finished his working career as a Forman of the Machinists at Wear Technology for Milacron, Inc. in McPherson, KS.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Valley Falls and a member of the Machinist Union.

He married Lois Toews in 1973, they later divorced. He married Debbie Shade in 1982 and they later divorced.

Bill married Brenda E. Smith-Vineyard on April 29, 2006. They celebrated over 14 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda of the home; 3 children, Dr. Heather Klatt of Joplin, MO, Bradly Klatt (Lori) of McPherson, KS and Jessica Wolf (Austin) of McPherson, KS; step-son, Ryan Kimberlin (Carrie) of Meriden, KS; 2 sisters, Kristi Morgan (Richard) of Moundridge, KS and Cheryl Ayer (Boyd) of Wichita, KS; 3 grandchildren, Rylan Klatt, Wyatt and Stella Kimberlin and “one on the way”.

Edwynn "Moe" Waab-Ne-Wii Thomas, 73, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at the St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

He was born on July 16, 1947 in Horton, Kansas the son of Leonard and Orcelia Mason Thomas Sr. Moe served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe. He was a school bus driver for years and most recently drove for the Kickapoo Headstart. On February 25, 1977 he married Lucinda "Cindy" Oliver in Hiawatha, Kansas.

Linda Belle Bartley Sprague died Tuesday March 16, 2021 at Midland Hospice in Topeka, Kansas. Linda Belle was born June 3, 1932 in Powhattan, Brown County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Earl Franklin Bartley and Alice G. Wilson Bartley and sister of Garrett Wilson Bartley. She was related to most of Powhattan and much of Brown County. As a youngster, she took piano and voice lessons and also played trombone at Powhattan High School. Her soprano singing was a constant through her adulthood. She sang at weddings, funerals, at Powhattan Methodist Church, and as a member of the First United Methodist Church choir in Topeka. She graduated from Powhattan High School in 1950. Linda went to KU as a member of Miller Scholarship Hall.

On her 19th birthday, she married Carroll G. Sprague. From 1951 to 1963, they lived outside of Powhattan and had four children, Mark, Chris, Lance and Carol Lynn. In 1963, they moved to Topeka. Linda & Carroll needed a large house with at least four bedrooms. After looking at several areas of town, Linda found Potwin and would go no further. She lived in Potwin for almost 58 years. After the birth of her last child, Bart, Linda finished her bachelor’s degree at Washburn University. She taught at Clay Elementary and then decided to pursue her Master’s of Library Science at Emporia State University. Linda loved being a librarian. She began at Grant and Rice Elementary Schools and would spend the rest of her career at Maude Bishop Elementary School in Topeka. After retirement, she volunteered at the Kansas State Historical Library, The Topeka Public Library and the First United Methodist Children’s Library. Linda enjoyed watching sports, particularly the Jayhawks. Her trained singing voice was also useful for cheering and yelling at the television. Her children can attest to the fact that she could be heard above everyone else at their sporting events.

She was preceded in death by her son Chris (1973) and her husband Carroll (2003). She is survived by her sons, Mark Sprague and his wife Mickey Hanna of Perry, Kansas, Lance Sprague and his wife Mary Nelson of Santa Cruz, California, Bart Sprague of Topeka, Kansas, and her daughter, Carol Sprague and her husband Chuck Wilson of Topeka. Linda Belle enjoyed life and loved her family. She was here at a good time and had a good time while she was here.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 11:30 am at the Powhattan Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.  Ruth Anne Irick, 94, of Holton, KS, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Medicalodge Jackson County. She was born October 9, 1926 in Holton, KS, the daughter of Thomas Logan and Ruth Elizabeth (Arnold) Hill.

Ruth Anne graduated from Holton High School in 1944. She lived in the Holton community most of her life; except 3 years in Valley Falls. Ruth Anne was a homemaker, worked part-time as a sales clerk for Ben Franklin and Koger Variety Store and also worked for Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.

She was a member of Circleville Christian Church and graduated from Menniger Bible Class in 1988.

Ruth Anne married Howard E. Irick on May 1, 1946 in Holton, KS. He preceded her in death on May 24, 2015 after over 69 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a brother, William F. Hill.

Survivors include her daughter, Lynnette K. Bruns (Ed) of Holton, KS; her son, Dennis L. Irick (Cindy) of Missouri City, TX; 3 grandchildren, Renee Drossel (Jason), Daniel Irick (Kelly) and David Irick (Vanessa) and 3 great-grandchildren, Olivia Drossel, Gavin Irick and Logan Irick.

Sister Mary Ann Dice (formerly Sister Ursula), 81, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kan., died Sunday, March 14, 2021, at the monastery. Funeral services are pending to a later date.

Sister Mary Ann was born in Kansas City, Mo., on April 2, 1939, the youngest of three children of Bertha (Gladbach) and Fred Dice. She attended Holy Trinity Grade School in Lenexa, Ks., and St. Joseph High School in Shawnee, Ks. After her graduation in 1957, she entered the Benedictine sisters. She earned a B.S. in education from Mount St. Scholastica College and M.A. in teaching from Webster University. As a primary teacher in parish elementary schools in Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska, Sister Mary Ann prepared hundreds of children for their First Communion and Confession. Early in her career, she received an Outstanding Young Teacher award in Salisbury, Mo., and continued to excel and be a model educator for 45 years. When she returned to the Mount, she supervised the monastery laundry and did embroidery work.

Sister Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha and Fred Dice.

She is survived by her sister, Cynthia Bach (Herb), of Jetmore, Kan., and her brother, Fred Dice (Fran), of Heber Springs, Ark., nieces, and nephews, and her monastic family.

Bonnie Rose West, 82, of Falls City, Nebraska was born on June 4, 1938, in Madera, California to Walter and Bernice (Witt) Ploof.  She spent her childhood years with her family in Onawa, Iowa where she attended school and graduated from Onawa High School.  On May 3, 1959, Bonnie was united in marriage to Royal “Gene” West in Morrill, Kansas.  To this union two children, Larry and Kala, were born.  The couple raised their family in Falls City where Bonnie worked various jobs.  She sold Stanley products for many years with the help of her two children whether they wanted to or not and her most recent employment was working as the social service director for the Ketter Manor in Falls City.  Bonnie was a member of the First Brethren Church in Falls City, the Falls City American Legion Auxiliary and served as an EMT on the Falls City Volunteer Squad for five years.

Bonnie passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2021, at her home in Falls City, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of 82 years, 9 months and 10 days.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Royal “Gene” West and brothers-in-law Walter Hanks and Gordon Zaiser.

Edwina Mary Reimond was born February 21, 1950, in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, to Edward and Berniece (Snidach) Reimond and passed away very unexpectedly at her Robinson farm home on March 12, 2021. Edwina grew up in Aliquippa, PA. Her dad passed from a cerebral hemorrhage a few months before she was born.  Edwina's mother went on to raise the four children on her own with the help of Aunt Helen and Uncle Henry Kaleida. Edwina was baptized into the Catholic faith and continued being a faithful Christian the rest of her life. Growing up, Edwina had her older brothers Gerard and Sylvester, and sister Andrea and cousins Rose Marie, Philip, and Kenny Kaleida as playmates along with several neighbor children.

Graduating from Mt. Saint Gallitzin High School in Baden, PA, in 1968, Edwina followed her two brothers to Kansas.  Both brothers came to Kansas on basketball scholarships, but Edwina wanting to strike out on her own, chose neither 

of her brothers' schools and went on to attend Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas, graduating in 1972 with a degree in Elementary Education specializing in Special Education. 

Looking for a teaching position, Edwina found herself in NE Kansas.  While teaching for the Midway-Denton School District, Edwina lived in the country with two teacher friends and her Irish Setters, Shane and Charity, and two little pups Autumn and Ginger.  As she went through life, Edwina was known by many as a dog whisperer.  Her love for animals was without question and she is known to have had over 40 dogs and cats spanning throughout her lifetime, although not all at one time. After teaching special education and fifth grade in Doniphan County for several years, she left education for a few years and became a sales rep.  Deciding sales was not for her, she went to truck driving school to become an over the road truck driver.  She graduated from truck driving school, earned her CDL and hit the road for a bit. Edwina then returned to teaching and spent thirteen years teaching third grade At Kickapoo Nation School in Powhattan, Kansas.  While teaching in Powhattan, she and her students won a national award for an outdoor vegetable and flower garden they had created.

After leaving education for the final time, Edwina started her benevolent associations.  She delivered meals on wheels for Doniphan County for the past seventeen years, worked with the Doniphan County Food Pantry when it was in Highland, and for several years drove veterans to their medical appointments in Leavenworth, Topeka, and St. Joseph.  For forty five years after moving to the farm outside of Robinson, Kansas, Edwina was a friend, help mate of Dixie's.  They cared for and helped one another so much and for so long, that they were "adopted" by each other's families.

Although she could be stubborn with a mind of her own, Edwina was one of the most gentle, kindest, compassionate, and loving souls that one could ever have hoped knowing. Her love of family, friends, children, and animals, and country life made her so down to earth and loved. She loved God and her faith remained strong.  She could give sound advice when asked and tried to be the best and do her best in all things.  Edwina is so loved by those who knew her. Her sudden and shocking passing had saddened all who knew her and has left them with a very big hole in their hearts.

Left to mourn Edwina's passing is her friend and companion Dixie Westervelt of the home; her brother Gerard and his wife Linda, and their children Jerilynn Burris, her husband Doug Burris, and their children Jack, Emmy, and Addy Burris. Nick Reimond, son of Gerard and Linda Reimond, and Christina Reimond  ( daughter of Sylvester) and his wife Darlene Reimond also remain to mourn. Edwina also leaves behind her sister Andrea Yucius and her husband Paul Yucius. 

Additional family left to remember Edwina includes cousins Rose Marie McKenna, Phil Kaleida and wife Liz, and Ken Kaleida and wife Donna along with all their families. Nieces and nephews by heart to mourn their Aunt Winna are Amanda Bevis Hayes, her husband John, and son Harrison, and Nathan Bevis, his wife Jennifer, and daughter Isabel. Her for legged family Black Jack, Henry, and Quincy also miss her.

Edwina is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, brother Sylvester, oldest sister Judith, Aunt Helen and Uncle Henry and special friends Gene and Virgina Ruth and Don Westervelt, who introduced her as his other daughter.

All who know her will miss her radiating smile and comforting presence.  She passed to soon and although our hearts are broken, she will always be a part of us.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland from 10 until 6 Tuesday.  The family will meet with friends starting at 9:30 Wednesday morning until time of services.

Services are planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, at the funeral home, with Jerry Petering of Highland, officiating.  Cremation will follow services.

 Betty Lou Davis, 74, of Netawaka, KS, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at her home with family by her side. She was born August 3, 1946 in Creston, IA, the daughter of Ray Irvin and Rosella Mae (Crum) Elliott.

Betty graduated from Circleville High School in 1964. She worked for Wetmore Grocery for 3 years and for Walmart in Holton; retiring after 25 years.

 Betty attended Bancroft Community Church and later Wetmore Bible Church.

She married Francis A. Davis on June 6, 1964 in Bancroft, KS. They celebrated over 56 years of marriage.

Survivors include her husband, Francis of the home; 5 sons, Jerry Davis (Pam) of Goff, KS, Bruce Davis of Netawaka, KS, Robert “Bob” Davis (Alicia) of Soldier, KS, William “Bill” Davis (Bridget) of Circleville, KS and Harold Davis of Norfolk, VA; a brother, Donald Elliott (Virginia) of Holton, KS; 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Rosalee Alma Herpich, age 103 1/2 years, flew away from this life on Sunday, March 14, 2021.  She was born on August 14, 1917 in Highland Kansas to Alonzo Marcell and Nellie (Vigus) Marcell. Rosalee lived with her parents and her 4 siblings on the Marcell farm in Highland, and when she was in high school, the family moved to Denton, Kansas.

           On May 25, 1935, Rosalee married Clarence L. Herpich. They made their home in Denton and the surrounding area. Three children were born of their union: John (Jack) Herpich; Janet L. Herpich Scheibe; and C.R. (Dick) Herpich. Rosalee was preceded in death by her husband who passed in 1966, her three children, her daughter-in-law, Lois (Mrs. John) Herpich, and son-in-law, Robert Scheibe.

           Rosalee is survived by her daughter-in-law Ruth (Mrs. C.R. Herpich); 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and, 5 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, the descendants of her Marcell siblings. And, she leaves her wonderful friends in Denton who have been like family to her, helping her to continue living in her home.

           Devotion to faith and family marked Rosalee’s life. Her Christian faith was cultivated by her involvement as a girl in the First Christian Church of Highland, Kansas, and later, in the United Methodist Church of Denton, Kansas. She loved basketball, playing on her school teams in the 1930s, and forever following Kansas University basketball. She was an accomplished seamstress and remarkable cook. Often she worked outside of the home, till age 70 when she retired. After “retiring” Rosalee regularly worked as a Doniphan County election volunteer.  She considered the right to vote important, and at 103 years old, cast her ballot in person in the November 2020 presidential election. She enjoyed travels with her daughter Janet, and her son, Dick. Some winters, Rosalee would stay with her sister in California. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy High Priestess while a member of the Crescent Shrine No. 15 at Atchison, Kansas during 1989 - 1990. There is so much more that can be written about Rosalee and her life. May the memories of those unwritten things be held dear by the ones who knew her.

Lois Fisher, 83, of Falls City, NE, passed away March 9, 2021 at Lincoln, NE. She was born November 4, 1937 at Dawson, NE.

She married Rolie Fisher on September 26, 1955 at Sabetha, KS

Lois was raised at Sabetha and graduated Sabetha High School in 1955. When in high school she worked at the soda fountain in a drug store. When married the couple established their home in Sabetha. She was a homemaker, raising four children. They moved to the Rolie’s family farm and had lived in rural Richardson County until moving into Falls City in 2011.

Lois is survived by her husband, Rolie of Falls City, children, Jerry of Lincoln, Susan Drayer and her husband Dan of Lincoln, Dennis Fisher and his wife Cheryl of Hastings, NE, Curt Fisher of Falls City, brother, John Carlson of Sabetha, KS, sister, Bee Wells of Flowood, MS, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Delmar Carlson.

Courtney Lynn Place, 39, of Netawaka, KS, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2021; the result of an electrical accident. She was born March 22, 1981 in Holton, KS, the daughter of Glenn Stephen “Tiny” Place and Pamela Jane (Martin) Ward.

Courtney attended Royal Valley High School. She was a homemaker and a self-employed housekeeper. She was a member of Citizen Band Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma.

Katheryn Rose “Katy” Yarger, 35, of York, Nebraska, formerly of Centralia, Kansas passed away unexpectedly on March 8, 2021, at her home.

Katheryn was born on October 29, 1985, in Griffiss AFB, Rome, NY to Steven Yarger and Justina “Tina” Van Gilder. Katheryn attended school at Centralia and graduated from Centralia High School in 2004. She attended Peru State for two years, Community College Lincoln and did some online classes in her young life. She was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 12. However, yet she had no intention of letting a seizure stand in her way and refused to not live her life to its fullest and enjoying every moment. She loved life and was loved by those who knew her.

Katy was currently employed as a phlebotomist for the State of Nebraska Department of Corrections. It was while working for the department of corrections, that she met the love of her life, Keith Krumrei. The couple were to be wed on October 23, 2021.

Katy was a coffee lover and enjoyed a good “cup of joe” and collected coffee paraphernalia. She was an avid reader and enjoyed hanging out with her friends.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents; her grandfather, Earl Yarger; her grandmother, Ilda Santos; her uncle, Lester Briggs; and cousins, Jason Adams and Roger Briggs.

She is survived by her fiancé, Keith Krumrei; her parents, Steve (Louise Jones) Yarger of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Tina (Dean) Zartman of Centralia; her brother, Chris Yarger of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; her sister, Karee Zartman of Centralia; her grandparents, Joann Yarger of Centralia and Jim and Karen Van Gilder of Centralia; step-siblings, Dawn (Chris) Blewett, Dave (Jennifer) Jones, Michelle Jones and Marie Jones; her nieces and nephews, Sylas Yarger, Maddie Jones, Noah Jones, Sammy Jones; her aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins. Carol Lock, 58, of Morrill, KS, died early Tuesday morning, March 9, 2021.

Carol was born November 25, 1962, to Alexander and Kathleen (Wilkinson) Lock in Hiawatha, Kansas. She grew up in her parent’s rural home in Hiawatha. After attending school in the Hiawatha district, she graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1981. Following graduation, she worked at the Flair Fold shutter plant in Hiawatha for many years. During that time she moved to Morrill. She later worked at IMAC for a short time prior work working for Crosswinds (ADM), both in Sabetha. Carol worked there for 18 years. During that time, she progressed to be a Quality Assurance Technician. While working full time, she also worked part-time doing in janitorial services.

Carol also served in the 2 BN, 13oth FA, KARNG in Hiawatha part-time for 18 years.

She loved reading and because of that, she loved reading and learning about the Bible. On May27, 2018, in Omaha, Nebraska, she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Carol was a member of the Falls City, Nebraska congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Carol loved art, music, travel and animals. But most of all, she loved the Bible’s promise of what God’s Kingdom will accomplish for the earth. She loved talking to people about those promises and she shared her Christian faith with many.

Carol is survived by two sisters: Linda Brown of Omaha, Nebraska, Theresa Lock of Morrill, four brothers: Kenny (Bonnie) Lock of Hiawatha, Tom Lock of Bern, KS, Richard Lock of Springdale, Arkansas, Mike Lock of Lincoln, Nebraska, with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Friends and family may sign the register book and join in the celebration of life, through pictures at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, Tuesday thru Thursday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Graveside service will be held for family only at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, Friday, March 19, 2021.

J Richard Johnson, 91, passed away on March 10, 2021 at Atchison Senior Village. He was born on September 16, 1929, the third child of Knut and Myrtle (Mortensen) Johnson. He married Darlyne (Redmond) Johnson on June 21, 1953. They lived just north of Bendena in the house Richard lived in since he was 9 years old. 

He has been a farmer all his life, also raising cattle and hogs. He actively farmed until he was 89 years old. He enjoyed planting a large, sweet corn patch and sharing it with family and friends. In 2017 they received the Kansas Banker’s Award for Soil Conservation. 

He served in the Kansas National Guard at Troy for several years and was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church at Bendena. 

Richard is survived by his wife of 67 years, Darlyne. Daughters, Carol (Jerry)Boos and Debi Johnson,  daughter in law, Tina Johnson, a sister, Marilyn Shroyer. Five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren with another one on the way and one great-great grandson. 

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Johnson, brothers, Norman, Melvin, Chris, John, and Byron, and a sister Berenice. 

Cremation is planned with inurnment at the Moray Cemetery at a later date.

HOLTON – Gerald M. Lierz, 89, died Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born December 1, 1931 at Seneca, the son of Leo and Bertha Bergman Lierz.  He had served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.

Gerald was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton.

He worked at Goodyear Tire in Topeka for thirty years, retiring in 1989.  He also raised cattle.

Gerald’s greatest attribute was his pride and loving devotion to his family, friends and the farm way of life.

Gerald married Ethel Brokamp on February 25, 1957 at St. Bedes Catholic Church in Kelly.  She survives, of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Elmer Lierz, Lester Lierz and Verness Lierz, and two sisters, Cleta Mae Hammes and Marceil Rottinghaus.

Other survivors include one daughter, Colleen (Russ) Hill, Round Rock, TX; two sons, Tim (Stacie) Lierz and Doug (Donna) Lierz, all of Topeka; one sister, Eileen Sudbeck, Seneca; six grandchildren, Angie, Matt, Mallory, Dalton, Dylan, and Caedyn and five great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13th at St. Dominic Catholic Church.  Burial with military honors will follow in Mt. Kenneth L. Ferrell, 92, formerly of Meriden, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2021 in Emporia.

He was born, February 1, 1929, in Valley Falls, the son of John V. and Ethel R. (Bedwell) Ferrell.  He graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1946. Shortly after graduating he enlisted with the United States Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, Ken worked at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka until 1954. He then went to work for Northrop Aircraft at Patrick Air Force Base near Cocoa Beach, Florida, working at Cape Canaveral Missile Test Facility for several years and retired from Northrop Grumman on January 1, 1995; after 40 years. Ken had spent quite a few years photographing the ancient Bristlecone Pines at 10-11,000 feet above sea level and during that period had climbed over 400 mountains.  He was a member of the Photographic Society of America.  

He is survived by: his son, Jeffrey L. Ferrell (Viki) of Oxford, FL; his daughters, Julie A. Ferrell-Thompson (Nathan) of Anchorage, AK and Jena Johnson (Doug Disney) of Americus, KS; his 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  

Ken was preceded in death by his sisters Joyce Knox and Doris Paul and his brothers, Vernon and Marvin Ferrell.

Ruth Gladys (Schonewill) Meyer was born July 20, 1926 to Helene and Marcus Schonewill in Volga, South Dakota. Ruth went to join her family in Heaven on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha, Kansas.

Ruth had three brothers Edward, Burnette, and Duane and four sisters Kathryn, Gertrude, Laura, and Carol.

Ruth grew up on a farm with a mother who cooked, ironed, cleaned, and raised eight children. Her father worked eight to twelve hours a day on the farm in order to make a living for his family. She always remembered everyone eating around the table together, blessing the food first, and sharing all they had. She loved how all of them would pile into the car on Sunday morning to attend two church services, one in Dutch, and one in English. She was always thankful that she had loving, God fearing parents who taught her about God, taught her to love God above all, and taught her that He is always faithful.

Ruth graduated from Volga High School in 1944. She worked in Volga until her marriage to Alvin Meyer on August 4, 1948 after he returned from his service in the Army.

The first years of Ruth’s marriage included life as the wife of a college student who attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. When Alvin was called back into the service for a stint stateside, they moved to Maryland and then New Jersey. When he began his career in the dairy industry, they moved to Wheaton, Illinois, Volga, South Dakota, seven years in Castlewood, South Dakota, one year in South Shore, South Dakota, a two-year stint in Rochester, Minnesota, four years in Chillicothe, Missouri, and finally settled in Sabetha, Kansas where they eventually retired.

Ruth worked at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas as Activities Director for ten years. She had one of the longest employee records at the home and that along with her many contributions was celebrated at a retirement dinner in August 1989. She made some dear friends, showed compassion for residents, and impacted many lives. Prior to that, she had worked as a nurse’s aide for more than six years.

Ruth loved gardening and enjoyed the bounty by canning green beans, tomatoes, and so much more. Making jams, jellies, and homemade pies was always a special treat she gladly shared with so many. Knowing the importance of hard work, she taught all her children well.

She and Alvin loved to travel and were excited when they purchased a fifth wheel RV and began their trek around the country often looking up old friends and relatives along the way. Taking in the sights of the country and remembering their trips with hundreds of photos, was a delight for Ruth. She was always so proud of her pictures and albums, every single page clearly noted the what, when, and where of each picture. She always kept a tiny notebook as they traveled. This enabled her to keep track of every picture that they took on their adventures which made it easier for her to assemble her beloved scrapbooks.

Ruth’s photos were not only about travel. She always had a camera in her hand ready to snap you at a minute’s notice. She loved capturing her family, in a flash of a second, forever recorded as a moment in time. This was her way of embracing her beloved family to be cherished for years to come. And her computer was filled with hundreds of these pictures and they were assembled on a rotating desktop for her to watch at her leisure.

Family was everything to Ruth. Any time a grandbaby arrived she always went to help. She was always involved with her grandchildren and provided assistance when she could. With great pride and enthusiasm, she shared photos of her grandchildren as the number grew and they were ever changing.

Because they were local, she was thrilled when her granddaughter, Kacey, was born and she was able to care for her after school and on weekends. And Jake, the grandson that followed, gave her much joy (and an occasional frustration) as she too cared for him on a regular basis. These children were treasures to her and filled her days with much happiness.

Ruth and Alvin were active members of Northridge Church in Sabetha, Kansas where they attended weekly worship service and Sunday School. She loved her Sunday School Class and always looked forward to seeing them and often commented how much she missed them when they were traveling.

Alvin and Ruth shared 66 years in marriage.  When he died in 2014, she remained in the duplex in Sabetha for three years where she looked forward to visits from her children, grandchildren, and occasional church family.

She moved to Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha, Kansas in October, 2017. She became a member of the United Church of Christ in Fairview, Kansas where she attended church and bible study when she could.

Alvin and Ruth had five children, Wallace (Dona) Meyer, Independence, Missouri, Sheryl (Dennis) Kelly, Boise, Idaho, Barbara (Bill) Donnelly, Olathe, Kansas, Darrel (Jane) Meyer, Kansas City, Kansas, and Lori (Bill) Rieger, Powhattan, Kansas.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; her parents, Helene and Marcus; her siblings, Edward, Burnette, Gertrude, and Duane; and one grandchild, Timothy Hudgins.

She leaves behind her five children and their spouses; her seventeen grandchildren; her thirty-four great- grandchildren; her three great-great- grandchildren; her three sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was a kind, loving, and gracious woman and was loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

A private family funeral service will be held on Monday, March 15, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Fairview, Kansas. The funeral service will be live streamed for the public on the United Church of Christ – Fairview, Facebook page.

Viewing will be open to the public on Sunday, March 14, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha, Kansas.

Albert “Bud” Benedict Kocour, Jr. age 85 passed away in his sleep March 9, 2021 at Atchison Senior Village.

Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. Bud was born on June 23, 1935 at the Atchison Hospital to Albert Kocour Sr. and Marguerite (Hayes) Kocour in Atchison, KS. Bud attended grade school at St. Benedict’s in Atchison, KS and graduated from Maur Hill in 1954. After high school, Bud served in the U.S. Army for two years stationed at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. While at Fort Sill, Bud won the favor of the base commanding officer by pitching fastpitch softball and leading his team to the base championship. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Bud enrolled at Benedictine College and studied accounting for two years then went on to work at Lincoln Grain for two more years. He then had enough of shoveling boxcars full of grain and began working as an accountant at the government storage caves just South of Atchison. He worked as the general manager at the caves until his retirement, at which point he began working with his brother Bob and nephew Mike at Commerce Real Estate.

In 1960, Bud met the love of his life Barbara Jean Nelson at the Hilltop outside Atchison. They were married on June 4, 1961 at St. Lawrence Church in Easton, KS.

Bud enjoyed spending his summer days at 8th and Riley playing softball for Schlitz, crappie fishing at Perry Lake, running lines and nets on the Missouri River, and spending time with his large group of friends. Bud was a great father to five rambunctious boys. He was slow to anger and long on patience. He was a very contented man that frequently spoke of his inner peace.

He was a lifelong member of St. Benedict’s where his great grandfather William Hayes was a founding member. He was an active member of the Elk’s Lodge and of the Knights of Columbus where he served several elected positions. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters (Mary Jo and Helen Jean) and a brother (Bob). Bud is survived by his five sons David (Trisha) of Olathe, KS; Joe (Shirley) of Atchison; Alan of Olathe; Vincent (Kathy) of Olathe; and Mark (Melissa) of Atchison; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Virginia Ann Meyer, 69, of Atchison, KS died Tuesday, March 09, 2021 at her home.

Virginia was born on March 12, 1951 in Topeka, KS the daughter of Melvin and Bertha (Handke) Hammond. She graduated from Atchison Community High School in 1969. Virginia worked as a waitress for the former Big Boys Restaurant and at the Melrose. She had also worked as a clerk for TG&Y and Gibson’s. She started work in housekeeping for the Atchison Hospital and retired after 27 ½ years as the Material Manager for the hospital. She loved Elvis Presley, watching television, reading Detective books, going on cruises and especially her grandchildren.

She was married to Garry Meyer (aka; Elvis) on November 15, 1969. He survives of the home. Additional survivors include three sons; Shawn Meyer, San Antonio, TX, Jason (Chandal) Meyer, Blue Springs, MO, and Joshua (Valerie) Meyer, Bella Vista, AR, a daughter, Heather Meyer, of the home, fourteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren and four sisters; Karen Griffin, Sandy Hammond, Jeanette Hammond, and Sharon (Steve) Beck, all of Topeka, KS. Her parents and one sister, Nancy Hammond preceded her in death.

Susan Kay Bestwick, 73, formerly of Sabetha, KS, passed away unexpectedly at Stormont-Vail Health in Topeka, KS, on March 6, 2021. She was born to Neil and Eunice (Bougher) Bestwick on November 2, 1947, in Sabetha, KS. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1966.

Susan was known for her positive, cheerful attitude, and compassion for others. She worked for many years as a certified nurse and medication aide at the Apostolic Christian Home and Lakeside Terrace. Over the years she also worked at Casey’s, Country Mart, and the former Rock Creek Hotel.

She loved animals and always had a loyal companion by her side. Susan spent numerous hours gardening and tending to her flower beds. She loved researching her family history and would look at old photos for hours. Although Alzheimer’s robbed her memory for the past several years, she still knew her family and continued to enjoy life.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Phil and Roger Bestwick, granddaughter Aleah Reynoldson, and beloved companion, Raymond Kinast. She is survived by her canine companion Chloe, of the home, her children, Douglas Mitchell of Sabetha, KS, Jacqueline (Rodney) Epple of Tecumseh, KS, and Pamela Powell (Ron) of Soldier, KS, and grandchildren, Charlotte (James) Worden, Debra Thompson, Elaina Powell, Christopher Powell, and Allison Reynoldson. She has five great-grandchildren, Gregor, Elizabeth, and Jaxon Brassfield, Noah Sperline, and Adler Romines and several cherished nieces and nephews.

 Norma Kay Murphy, 82, of Hardtner, KS, formerly of Hoyt, KS, passed away March 5, 2021 at her son’s home in Hardtner. She was born December 2, 1938 in Soldier, KS, the daughter of Alva William and Elsie M. (Rutledge) Neal.

 Norma graduated from Soldier High School. She made her home in Hoyt, KS, she was a homemaker, farmwife and later a daycare provider.

 She was a member of Hoyt United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Norma married William W. “Jeff” Murphy on May 17, 1957. They celebrated over 42 years of marriage; Jeff passed away October 26, 1999. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Mitchell Murphy and 2 sisters, Nadine Wheeler and Roberta Vogel.

Survivors include 2 sons, Patrick Murphy (Cynthia) of Hoyt, KS and Matthew Murphy (Tammy) of Hardtner, KS; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

Terry Lee Woolsoncroft,  68, of Centralia, Kansas died Sunday, March 7, 2021 at The University of Kansas Health System of St. Francis Campus in Topeka, Kansas. 

He was born on January 10, 1953 the son of Carroll Woolsoncroft and Rosie (King) Woolsoncroft at Seneca, Kansas.  He grew up in the Centralia area, attended Centralia schools, and graduated from Centralia High School with the Class of 1971.  After high school, he entered into farming with his father and farmed until his death.  Terry enjoyed golfing as much as he could as a young man.  He enjoyed having coffee with his friends daily and also enjoyed eating out.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by a brother, Maurice Woolsoncroft; several cousins; and his nieces and nephews.

Sharon Kay (Hogue) Koch, 76, of Dawson was born on May 29, 1944, in Humboldt, Nebraska to Clifford and Velma (Pettit) Hogue. She was raised with her family in Dawson where they owned and operated the Dawson Café.  Sharon received all of her schooling in Dawson and graduated from Dawson High School with the class of 1962.  On November 10, 1962, Sharon was united in marriage to James “Jim” Koch at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dawson.  To this union four children, Stephanie, Stacey, William “Bill” and Kevin were born.  The couple began their marriage living in Falls City before moving to Dawson where they have lived the rest of their married lives.  Sharon enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and tending to her flowers. 

Sharon passed away on Friday, March 5, 2021, at the Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of 76 years, nine months and 5 days.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Dennis Hogue, sister-in-law Carol Koch and brother-in-law Robert “Bob” (Judy) Koch.  She is survived by her husband Jim Koch of Dawson, daughters: Stephanie Ingraham of Dawson, Stacey Patel of Dawson, sons: Bill Koch and wife Jamie of Dawson, Kevin Koch and wife Cora of Tecumseh, KS; grandchildren: Jacob Ingraham and wife Amber of Creston, IA; Alex Ingraham of Chuluota, FL; Chloe Patel of Falls City, NE; Ethan and Daniel Koch of Tecumseh, KS; Levi and Jonathan Koch of Dawson, NE; great-granddaughter Sophie Ingraham of Creston, IA;  sisters-in-law: Jane Ann Hogue of Humboldt, NE; Annette Bausch and husband Larry of Beemer, NE; Mae Jean Brightup and husband Joe of  Topeka, KS  ; Michelle Heim and husband Joe of Dawson, NE; brothers-in-law: Larry Koch of Dawson, NE; Richard “Rick” Koch and wife Kathy of Rochester, MN; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Brantley John Witt, born without life on March 5, 2021 at Lincoln, NE to Monty John and Nicole Ann (Merz) Witt. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Brantley is survived by his parents, sisters, Daycee, Nataley and Haisley Witt, grandparents, Bruce and Pam Merz, Julie Witt and Leonard Witt, great-grandmother, Opal Frye, aunts and uncles, Mitch and Amanda Merz, Trevor and Lisa Merz, Travis Witt and Alisha Hoppe, Sally and Kedrick Ford, Cody Witt, and Casey and Stephanie Witt, and thirteen first cousins. Craig Corbet, 68, Monday, of Iola, KS, died unexpectedly March 1st at his home in Iola, KS.

He was born in Hiawatha, KS, the son of Murl and Dolores (Smith) Corbet, on July 19, 1952. The family lived in Hiawatha until 1961 when they moved to Garden City, KS. In 1965, they moved to Yates Center, KS where Craig graduated from Yates Center High School in 1970. He served in the United States Air Force in Vietnam from 1970 to 1974 and in the Air National Guard from 1974 to 1976. Craig was a member of the American Legion in Yates Center for 19 years. He was also a regular blood donor. Craig enjoyed traveling the world with his good friend Greg. He spent a great deal of his time enjoying visits with family and friends. Craig always had music playing wherever he was at. He owned and operated the Leroy Locker in Leroy Kansas from 1985 to 2001. In recent years he retired from Gates in Iola in 2019.

Craig is survived by his son Christopher and wife Stephanie of Coeur d'alene, ID and daughter Shannon Swanson of Spring Hill, KS., two sisters DeeAnn Freeman and husband Jim of Overland Park, KS, Karen Berman and husband Dave, of Las Vegas, NV., five grandchildren Emily, Amelia, Caden, Carter, and Crosby and two great-grandchildren; Arabella and Olivia as well as many nieces and nephews. Craig was preceded in death by his parents.

Craig was loved by many for his wisdom and gentle spirit. He will be greatly missed.

All are welcome to attend his service that will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Severance Kansas at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 13. Military honors a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Dorothy Mae Bruns, 94 of Burchard, Nebraska passed away on Friday, March 5, 2021 at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital.  She was born on February 6, 1927 to George and Anna Clara (Warnholz) Nordmeyer born in Deshler, Ne.

Services 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Pawnee City, Nebraska. BRIDGMON, Dolly June (Rowell) passed away peacefully on March 3, 2021 in Tucson AZ at the age of 94. She was born in Barada NE, the youngest of 18 children born to Evert and Stella (Mount) Rowell. She married Everett Wilson Bridgmon on April 12, 1944. After his three years of service as a Morse Code operator in the Army Airforce stationed in India, the couple lived briefly in Kimble NE and Falls City NE, and then settled in Omaha NE and raised their son, William. In 1983 they retired to Falls City where they lived until relocating to Tucson AZ in 1998 to be near their son and his family. Dolly longed for her home in Falls City and returned annually as often as possible for the Rowell family reunions every third Sunday in August. Family was the most important thing to Dolly, and she loved and kept track of every one she could.

Dolly was a homemaker extraordinaire, and her homemade chicken and noodles were the stuff of legends. She was like an original Iron Chef: she could make a meal from 3 hot dogs, two parsnips, maple syrup, and a watermelon in under 60 minutes! She could teach Master Classes in sewing, crocheting, embroidery and needlepoint, many of which were gifted to family members. In retirement, Dolly and her husband enjoyed making woodwork and stitchery crafts.

Dolly was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son Dennis Lee in 1952, her husband in 2002, her son William in 2008, and her grandson, Jason Reed Bridgmon, in 2018. She was also preceded in death by her seven sisters: Alice, Manilla, Mabel, Opal, Velma, Phyllis, and Bernice, and ten brothers: Jay, Ervin, Melvin, Ralph, Victor, Aaron, Harold, Dorand, Ward, and Lloyd. 

Dolly is survived by her daughter-in-law, Pamela Sue Bridgmon, her granddaughter, Whitney Anne Hodam, a granddaughter-in-law, E. J. Millstone, and four great-grandsons: Bryan Millstone, Andrew Bridgmon, William and George Hodam, all of Tucson. She is also survived by hundreds of nieces and nephews, great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews.

Local family members will gather for a graveside service at the Harris Cemetery in Barada NE. The family plans a Memorial Service/Reunion Picnic to be held in Falls City in the summer of 2021.

Mark Owen Kane, 59, of Atchison, KS, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on Thursday, March 4, 2021.

Mark was born August 1, 1961, the first-born child of Eugene and Patricia (Bechtold) Kane.  He graduated from Atchison High School, 1979.  Mark did construction work at Fort Leavenworth, worked as a machine operator for Conagra, and was employed for the food services at Benedictine College.  He enjoyed listening to his favorite music, playing cards, fishing, bicycling, and hanging out with his friends and family.

Jane M. Stahl. 61, of Morrill, KS, passed away peacefully at Maple Heights Nursing Home on March 5, 2021, surrounded by her family.

Jane was born in Hiawatha, KS January 19th, 1960, the youngest of four children born to the late Roy and Betty Arnold Spicer and was a Brown County resident all of her life, where she attended Hiawatha schools, graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1978.

She worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aide and Physical Therapy Assistant for many years.  Jane loved spending time watching her children at sporting events and then at home with her dog COCOA.  She touched many lives through the years with her loving compassionate heart. She will get to join the one she missed with open arms.

She married David Stahl January 18th, 1978, in Fairview.  They had 43 wonderful years together, her children:  Eric Stahl (Kayla) of Sabetha, Jennifer Hanes (Seth) of Topeka, Jill Severin (Stephen) of Sabetha, Jodi Folk (Dylan) of Whiting; 9 grandchildren:  Katie, Brenden, Bayleigh, Tucker, Brody, Easton, Brylee, Ellie and Tylee.  Also surviving are brothers Bob and Jim Spicer, sister Linda Curlis, all of Hiawatha.

Jane loved her lab COCOA. She loved to take care of the elderly and won caregiver of the year at the Sabetha Manor.  She loved her iris bed, cooking for every occasion and always loved hosting family gatherings with her children and grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a grandson Bowen Neal Stahl.

A celebration of Jane’s life is planned for 10:30 Wednesday morning, March 10, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.  Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl will officiate.  Interment will follow at Cornelison Cemetery, Reserve.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Tuesday where the family will be present from 3 until 6 that evening.  MASKS ARE REQUIRED AND SOCIAL DISTANCING MUST BE OBSERVED.

James E. “Jim” Twombly, of White Cloud, passed away peacefully at his home March 3, 2021, surrounded by family.  He was 69.

Jim was born and grew up in Denison, Kansas May 19, 1951, the son of the late Edward L. Twombly.

Survivors are his wife Barbara “Charlene” Edie of 20 years, his brother William Twombly of Dennison, KS, sister Cindy Cluck of Highland, children:  Joseph Clark of Topeka, Michael Ballman of Hiawatha, Trina Shugurt of Leavenworth, Tara of Wichita, Maria Wenger of Topeka, Benjamin Twombly of Hiawatha, Chrissy Twombly of Robinson, Aurelia Rolland of St. Joseph, MO, and many grandchildren, great-grands, and many nieces and nephews.

He loved antiques and was the one who started the Sparks Flea Market.  Jim loved to fish, trap, hunt coons, play pool, raise dogs, and gardening.  He was a fun loving guy!

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Gerald "Jerry" Ivan Armstrong, 66, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas.

He was born on September 18, 1954 in Horton, Kansas the son of Ivan and Leone Ingels Armstrong. Jerry worked for Bradken in Atchison, Kansas for 42 years until he retired.  He enjoyed fishing, watching the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.

Survivors include three sisters, Anna (Darrel) Stelter of Blaine, Kansas, Brenda (John) Graham of Topeka, Kansas, Karen (Mike) Bunck of Everest, Kansas; brother-in-law, Jim Newins of Topeka, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Donita Newins.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, March 8, 2021 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Jessie Margaret Lawrence was born on June 9, 1929 in Rushville, the daughter of Byron and Alice (Hargrove) Lawrence. Margaret graduated from the Rushville High School and was a life-long member of the Sugar Creek Christian Church and the Sugar Creek Ladies Aid. Margaret was devoted to her family as a homemaker, mother and grandmother. Margaret and Joseph Berriman ‘J.B.’ Bishop were married on March 10, 1948 in St. Joseph, MO. Anita Marie Bourke (Ahern) passed away on Saturday February 27th, 2021in Edmond Oklahoma.  She was born on January 19, 1947 in Falls City, Nebraska.

Anita was a teacher, enjoyed Nebraska Cornhusker football, spending time with her family and life on her family farm. She also enjoyed cooking a Sicilian family recipe that was passed onto her, Mostaccioli. One of her greatest joys in life was time spent with her husband of almost 53 years and their four children.

Anita attended Shubert school in her early years and graduated from Falls City Sacred Heart High School in 1965. After high school she subsequently received her teaching degree in 1969 from Kansas Newman College. Anita was preceded in death by her father, Harold Fredrick Ahern, and mother, Lucia Virginia Nanfito Ahern.

She is survived by her husband, Harold “Jim” Bourke, daughter Lori Alspaugh, son James “Todd” Bourke, daughter, Jeni GettysBourke and son John Bourke along with their son-in-law Michael Alsapugh and daughter-in-law Diana GettysBourke, son Todd’s fiancé Marianne Fox, as well as 7 grandchildren, Haley, Camma, Raymond, Gaby, Michael, Alice and Gavin. Her Brother Tony Ahern, wife Janet and their 4 children. She is also survived by her beloved dog Dooney and cat Rocket.

Ralph R. “Buzz” Taylor, 77, of Troy, Kansas passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at his home. Ralph was born on January 1, 1944 in Troy, Kansas to Ralph V. and Mary (Clary) Taylor.

 He worked for Herzog as an Asphalt Forman for over 35 years. 

Ralph married Connie Whitten on July 12, 1969 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She survives of the home. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Michael Donoho and  sisters, Wilma Kaelin and Ida Keller.

Melinda Sue “Mendi” (Ashworth) Marriott, 55, of Longs, South Carolina, formerly of Troy, Kansas passed away Friday, February 26, 2021 in Little River, South Carolina.  

Mendi was born on March 8, 1965 in St. Joseph, Missouri to William “Butch” and Sharon (Akles) Ashworth.  

She worked as a receptionist for Heartland Healthcare for over 25 years and was a homemaker. Since moving to South Carolina Mendi became “Mini Poppins,” to her three precious grandchildren.  Not only did she do fun and exciting things with them, she blessed their mommy and daddy by keeping their house spotless.  

Mendi married Darrel Marriott on April 7, 1984 in Troy, Kansas. He survives of the home. Mendi was a member of Troy Christian Church. 

She was preceded in death by her father William “Butch” Ashworth and father-in-law, John Marriott.  

Additional survivors: daughter, Tamra Danielle (Nathan) Almeida, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Thomas Samuel “Sam” Williams, longtime area auctioneer, died early March 2, 2021, at Two Timbers in Highland. He was 92.

Sam was born in a farm home north of Sparks, May, 30, 1928, one of three children born to Percival Earl and Maud L. French Williams. He attended country schools near Sparks/Troy area prior to Sparks High School for three years, before graduating from Troy High School with the class of 1946. He worked in South Dakota when received an invite to serve his county. It was during the Korean Conflict, discharged from the Army at the rank of corporal. He returned to Doniphan County where he went to work for Raymond Gaul on the farm. He wanted to be an auctioneer and was going to go to auctioneer school when Horace Williams offered to teach him the trade. Thus became Williams Auction Service, working on his own, picking up sale barns to auction in the area as time went along, thus having an auction every day but Sunday. In later years, as sale barns in the area closed, Sam then concentrated solely on the auction service….he would sell anything: animals, farm equipment, household items…..probably even ice cubes to eskimos! He married Leola M. Peuker, January 12, 1951. Leola was a good fit for the auction service as she was his clerk. In later years, their son Tom joined them with Sam retiring after 40 years of service.

Sam attended the Community of Christ in Fanning for many years. He was a member Wenger Post #373, Powhattan American Legion, BPOE #1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge, and National Rifle Assn. He loved sports and to hunt.

Survivors include his wife Leola of Two Timbers in Highland; son Tom (Connie) Williams, daughter Elaine Oldridge (Jim), all of Hiawatha; 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving a sister in law Evelyn Twombly, two brothers in law Duane Rodecap and Clarence Trant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters: Donna Trant, Shirley Rodecap; two brothers in law: Jim Twombly and Glen Losson.

UVerna Frye Lorenz passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 in Falls City, Nebraska. She was born on June 24, 1917 to Edward & Ella (Dunn) Rodgers in Elbing, Kansas. The family relocated to Reserve when she was a child. She lived most of her life in Reserve, Kansas.

She married Thomas Samuel Frye on February 1, 1942. After his Service in the U.S. Army they settled in Reserve, KS and raised 6 children. Mr. Frye passed away in 1974.

On December 24, 1993 she married John R (JR) Lorenz. Mr. Lorenz passed away in 2007.

UVerna is survived by 5 children; Kenneth (Julia) Frye, Glasgow, KY; Ann (Greg) Hladky, Topeka, KS; Les (Mary) Frye and Dean Frye, Tulsa, OK; Gary (Sher’ree) Frye, Falls City, NE.  She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-great Grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

UVerna was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a son, Roger; three sisters and a brother.

Julie was a cosmetologist and worked at various salons, Patty’s Hair Shop, Top of the Line and Hair Loft. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting and spending time with family and grandchildren.

Julie married Raymond Elias on July 31, 1976; he preceded her in death on July 30, 2017. Survivors include as son Jerad (Cyndi Wyatt) Elias, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Monica and Michael Linck, Atchison, KS, two brothers, John (Mary) Trower, Jr., Atchison, KS, Tim (Rosie) Trower, Atchison, KS, two sisters; Sheila Trower, Wichita, KS, Melody Trower, Wichita, KS, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren with one great grandchild.

John B. Maday, Jr., 88, Atchison, KS, passed away Monday, March 01, 2021, at the Atchison Senior Village. John was born March 31, 1932 in Atchison, KS, the son of John and Mary (Eisenkohl) Maday, Sr. He attended and graduated from St. Benedict Elementary School and Maur Hill Prep. John served in the United States Navy. He worked at Blish Mize Co., for thirty-four years. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #6 and V.F.W #1175. He enjoyed yardwork, gardening or any handy work job around the house. John enjoyed watching baseball and going bowling. John married Bonnie Hunt on January 4, 1986 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Atchison, KS, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include a nephew Victor Kesse, Des Moines IA.

Raymond L. Dibbern, 75, of Circleville, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at the Holton Community Hospital.

He was born July 18, 1945 at Atchison, the son of Loren and Cora Hundley Dibbern. He graduated from Soldier High School in 1963.

Ray was a welder for the Sante Fe Railroad in Topeka for thirty-eight years.

He was a member of the Circleville United Methodist Church, the Circleville Saddle Club and Circleville Masonic Lodge No. 20, AF&AM.

Ray married Stella Marie Blackwell on November 4, 1974 in Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on September 27, 2018.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Patty Brownell.

Survivors include a step-daughter, Sandy Blackwell, North Myrtle Beach, SC; a step-son, Randy Blackwell, Netawaka; two brothers, Kenny Dibbern (Joan), Holton, and Paul Dibbern (Sherri), Netawaka; two sisters, Carol Buehler (Jay), Holton, and Linda Walder (Carl), Delia; six grandchildren, Rachel Gross (Chris), Jamie Moser, Dana Murray (J.D.), Jason Langberg (Rachel), Bobbi Hunter (Alex) and Sean Langberg, and eleven great grandchildren, Baylee Pitts, Meagan Pitts, Macey Gross, Allie Blume, Jenna Pitts, Tiah Gross, Sadey Gross, Thayne Gross, Karlie Murray, Kylie Murray and Everett Langberg.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 5th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Friday. Keith Bowser, 87, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2021 at the Mission Village Nursing Facility in Horton.

He was born October 7, 1933 on a farm west of Mayetta, KS, the son of Roy and Ina Bostwick Bowser. He graduated from Whiting High School in 1951.

Keith was a farmer and a stockman in the Whiting area and had operated a dairy for thirty-two years. He also was a substitute mail carrier and had worked at Goodyear in Topeka for ten years.

He was a member of the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton and a former member of the Whiting United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Jackson County Farm Bureau Association.

Keith married Mildred L. Wenger on June 28, 1952 in the home of Mildred’s parents at Whiting. She preceded him in death on November 26, 2020.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Linda Borders, and a brother, Roy Eugene Bowser.

Survivors include two sons, Rusty Bowser, Otis, OR and Jerry Bowser (Mary), Netawaka; one daughter, Bonnie Hochstetler (Steven), Horton; many grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

A memorial service for both Keith and Mildred will be announced at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery at Whiting. Marilyn Jane (Bucher) DeJonge, 88, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on November 17, 1932, in Pawnee City, Nebraska.  She was the second of seven children born to Leo and Alma (Fruhbauer) Bucher and was baptized on January 22, 1933, by Pastor Alvin Engelmann at the Four-Mile Church south of Humboldt.  Marilyn grew up on the family farm near Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1950.  On November 19, 1950, Marilyn was united in marriage to Ommo DeJonge at the First Presbyterian Church in Humboldt, Nebraska.  To this union three sons, David, Leland and Alan were born.  The couple raised their boys on a farm north of Humboldt where Marilyn was a loving homemaker to her family.  She was a loyal and dedicated member of the Faith Lutheran Church and enjoyed needlework, gardening and spending time with her family.  Marilyn was a kind, caring and loving member of the Humboldt community and will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate to have known her.

Marilyn passed away on Friday, February 26, 2021, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of eighty-eight years, three months and twelve days.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ommo, sons David and Leland DeJonge, a brother Robert “Bob” Bucher, sisters Betty (Dwayne) Kistner and Jannette (Clayton) Boring, daughter-in-law Deana DeJonge, brothers-in-law George (Lucille) DeJonge and Ron Rist, and sisters-in-law Edna DeJonge and Emma Lee DeJonge.

Marilyn is survived by her son Alan DeJonge and wife Joyce of Johnson, NE; grandson Brandon DeJonge and wife Valerie of Juniata, NE; great-grandchildren: Riley and Isabel DeJonge of Juniata, NE;  brothers: Gerald Bucher and wife Shirley of Tuscan, AZ; Gary Bucher and wife Lauralee of Auburn, NE; a sister Sherryn Rist of Humboldt, NE; step-grandchildren: Deanna, Bill, Angela, Michael & Christopher and their families, brothers-in-law: Ed DeJonge of Humboldt, NE; Lammert DeJonge of Humboldt, NE; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastors Tim Llewellyn and Rick Boring officiating. Masks will be a requirement for all those attending services.  A livestream of services will be available on the Wherry Mortuary/Monument Facebook page for those not attending services.  Interment will follow services at The Humboldt Cemetery in Humboldt. 

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at the Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street in Humboldt, Nebraska.

Mary Ann “Annie” (Hughes) Baker, age 87, of Sabetha, Kansas, formerly of Salem, Nebraska died on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at the Sabetha Manor in Sabetha, Kansas.

She was born on December 17, 1933, in Axtell, Kansas the daughter of Oscar and Anna (Volz) Hughes. She grew up in northeast Kansas and attended Oneida High School. She was the only graduate in the class of 1952.

Following graduation, she moved to Marysville, Kansas and worked in the local drugstore. She later moved to Sabetha, Kansas where she was employed at Duckwalls, Williams Cleaners, and Nabb’s Café.

She married Weldon Kendall on October 9, 1954. They had one daughter, Kay Jean, “Shorty.” They later divorced.

Annie moved to Salem, Nebraska in 1978 and began working at the Salem Café. Many knew Annie for her ability to cook an amazing hamburger and they looked forward to her daily café specials.

She married Charles “Chuck” Baker on July 3, 1989. Annie and Chuck purchased the Salem Café that same year. They worked alongside each other, dedicated their time serving the community, and made many life-long friends. She loved coordinating the yearly Easter egg hunt for the children in Salem and hosting the Fourth of July celebration for friends and family. She worked at the café until 2006 when she was forced to retire due to her health. Annie and Chuck’s marriage was blessed in the Catholic Church on October 7, 2006, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dawson, Nebraska. Annie returned to Sabetha in 2007. She moved to Cobblestone Court in 2010 and then, to the Sabetha Manor in December, 2011.

Annie was known for the love of her family, her faith, her cooking, and her love of the Kansas State Wildcats.

Annie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles, on February 26, 2011; her two sisters, Cathy Utecht and Rita Wende; and her brother, Don Hughes, Sr.

She is survived by her daughter, Kay (Larry) Wissmann, of Falls City, Nebraska; her granddaughter, Melissa Graf, of Franklin, Indiana; her sister, Helen Schwindamann, of Marysville, Kansas; her brother, Pat Hughes, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and her nieces, nephews, several cousins, and many friends.

 A parish Rosary will be prayed on Friday, March 5, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha, Kansas followed by a visitation until Mass time. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. The inurnment will be in the Morrill Cemetery.
