Laidacker (Ladd) Mannan Seaberg journeyed into the arms of his Lord on the afternoon of January 29, 2017 after a lengthy battle with a rare neurological disease, PSP.

Ladd was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1946, to Ivan and Blanch Seaberg in Beaumont, Texas. He spent his youth in China, Texas, attending high school in Beaumont where he was a competitive tennis player and very active in science activities. In 1964 he won the Regional Science Fair in Houston, TX, and many awards at the National Science Fair in Baltimore, MD, that year. He was featured in numerous national publications and appeared on the nationally syndicated Science All Stars television show. He became a HAM radio operator at a young age and enjoyed helping during hurricane disasters in the Houston area. In later years he enjoyed introducing Boy Scouts and others to Ham and became a lifetime member of ARRL.

He met the love of his life, Karen Cray, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1964. Both had won first place awards with the U.S. Air Force at the National Science Fair and were awarded summer jobs at the base in Dayton, Ohio. On August 28, 1966, Ladd and Karen married and completed their college careers at Texas Tech University in 1969. Ladd graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Engineering and was a member of Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Fraternity.

After graduation Ladd and Karen moved back to her hometown of Atchison, Kansas. Ladd spent the next 48 years devoted to family, MGP and the city of Atchison. Ladd joined MGP Ingredients in 1969 and rose from distillery production manager to vice president and manager of the company’s starch division in 1970. He was made vice president and plant manager in 1972 and was named president in 1980. He retired as Chairman of MGP’s Board on August 27, 2009, because of illness. He served for 26 years as president of the company and was also chief executive officer for 20 years.

Associated with MGP throughout his entire professional career he led numerous progressive developments at the company, including several major expansion projects, facility and technological upgrades, product diversifications and an extensive internal restructuring process. He performed an integral role in MGP becoming a traded company on the Nasdaq Exchange in 1988, and in the growth of the company’s product lines that included the addition of several specialty wheat proteins and starches for food applications, along with increased premium distilled spirits capabilities. He was a founding member and past president of the International Wheat Gluten Association. He also served for several years as president of the U.S. Wheat Gluten Industry Council, and was a member of the USDA Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Grains, Feeds and Oilseeds, representing the U.S. grain community at World Trade Organization meetings. Other professional memberships included the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Water Pollution Control Federation, and the Technical Committee of the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. In addition, Mr. Seaberg was a board member of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a member of Kansas Inc., and numerous other state committees under former Kansas Governor Bill Graves. He also served for several years on the boards of Exchange National Bank and Trust Company, Atchison, and Benedictine College, and was an advisory director of Commerce Bank of Kansas City.

Ladd was one of the original founders of the Atchison Area Economic Development Council and was its chairman until 2009. He also was a longtime member and chairman of the Atchison Santa Fe Depot Board of Trustees; a member of the Board of Directors of the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum, Atchison, and the Board of Directors of the Atchison County Historical Society; a past member of the Young Presidents’ Organization; and past chairman and president of the board for the Kansas City Presidents’ Organization. He additionally had been a member and chairman of the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; president of Atchison Kiwanis; former general chairman and special gifts chairman of the Atchison Chapter of the American Cancer Society; state vice president of the Kansas Jaycees; and a lifetime member of the USJCI Senate. A former pilot, he was the guiding force in the purchase of “Muriel,” the last remaining Lockheed Electra 10-E for Atchison, and had a very special kinship with its owner, Grace McGuire.

As a founder and charter member of the Amelia Earhart Bridge committee, he was instrumental in initiating action leading to the construction of a new bridge over the Missouri River in Atchison in 2012. He additionally spearheaded the funding and purchase of land and a walking bridge at the Independence Creek Lewis and Clark Historical Site in Atchison; and played a significant role in both the funding and building of the Kanza Earth Lodge at the site. He was a lifetime member of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership in business, industry and local community affairs, Mr. Seaberg was honored by the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce in 2008 when he was inducted into the chamber’s prestigious Hall of Fame. Along with his wife, Karen, his father-in-law, Cloud L. “Bud” Cray, MGP chairman emeritus, and other family members, he received the Cray-Seaberg Vision of Excellence Award from the Santa Fe Depot Board of Trustees in 2014. This distinguished award was established to honor individuals and families who demonstrate exceptionally outstanding community leadership. Three years prior to that, he and his wife were recognized for their extraordinary service to Benedictine College by being awarded that institution’s highest honor, the Cross of the Order of St. Benedict.

Ladd and his wife, Karen, raised two daughters, Lori (Roy) Mingus, Lawrence, Kansas, and Melissa (Kyle) Huntington, Atchison, Kansas. Grandchildren include Brie, Saxon, Aidan and Rhogan Mingus and Cray (CJ) and Parker Ladd Huntington. He is also survived by his brother John (Faye) Seaberg, China, Texas, and a sister, Charlotte Seaberg, Beaumont, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Blanch Seaberg and a brother Charles Seaberg. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Atchison where he served both as an Elder and a Deacon.

Ladd’s greatest passion was his family. He never missed anything his girls or grandchildren were involved in. He loved to travel the world with Karen. Together they sailed, scuba-dived, hiked, snow skied…. In his spare time he was an avid runner, wind-power enthusiast and astronomer. Ladd was greatly respected and admired by all. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and son, great friend and trusted comrade. No husband, father or grandfather ever gave more love, or was more loved in return. He will be missed.

Funeral services for Ladd will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 6, at the First Presbyterian Church, 302 North Fifth St. in Atchison. Dorothy M. Gerdes, age 88 of Auburn, passed away Monday, January 30, 2017 at Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn.

Raymond E. White, 93, of Holton, KS passed away Monday, January 30, 2017 in Topeka. He was born August 30, 1923 in Emmett, KS the son of Ernest Roosevelt and Anna Lucille (Hannah) White.

Ray attended Holton schools and proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. Ray owned and operated Snappy Lunch in Holton for several years during the 1950’s. He later worked for Goodyear Tire Company in the management department for over 33 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holton, Holton Lions Club, Holton V.F.W. Post 1367 and Holton American Legion Post 44.

Ray married Violet “Vi” Hopewell on July 2, 1945 in Coeur d’Alene, ID. She preceded him in death on May 3, 2011. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn White and a brother, Gene White.

Survivors include a daughter, Deanna Winters of Topeka, KS; 2 sons, Glenn White (Donna) of Topeka, KS and Gregg White (Doris) of Perry, KS; a sister, Eileen Griffin of Holton, KS; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He worked in construction and as an over the road truck driver. Neale served in the U.S. Navy.

Jeaneane Chance, 75, of Mayetta, KS passed away unexpectedly Sunday, January 29, 2017 at her home. She was born August 25, 1941 in Topeka, KS the daughter of Roy and Lucille (Peters) Frey.

Jeaneane graduated from Seaman High School in1959 and from Topeka Cosmetology in 1961. She was a life-long member of the Hoyt and Mayetta communities. Jeaneane owned and operated Jeaneane’s Beauty Salon in Topeka and Hoyt from 1964 – 1989. She was also a homemaker and had worked part-time at Expressions in Holton. She was a member of the Mayetta Christian Church.

Jeaneane married Darrel E. Chance on March 27, 1960 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on May 21, 2009.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Allison Winter (Pat) and Lori Eck (Ken) both of Mayetta; a son, D.J. Nancy Jane (Casey) Kyle, 76, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.

Nancy was born on October 29, 1940 to John Jullian and Blanche Lillian (Watton) Casey. She has two sisters, Janet Sue and Linda Jo, and one brother, David Jon.

She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Falls City, Nebraska in May of 1958. She married Dale Robert Kyle on November 15, 1958 in Falls City, Nebraska at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Nancy worked for 23 years at Flair Fold Shutter Factory in Hiawatha, Kansas from April 21, 1975 until January 31, 1998.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Blanche Casey; her husband, Dale on December 13, 2003; and a brother, David Jon Casey.

She is survived by a daughter, Lynda Diane; a son, Richard Lee; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Faye; two sisters, Janet (Bill) Exberger, and Linda Sturges; grandchildren, Karey Anne (Eric) Heiserman, Kasandra Rose (Dustin) Siard, and Tiffany Jo (Levi) Orton; and a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Faye Heiserman.

Stephen L. Smith, of Hiawatha, passed away on January 28, 2017 at the age of 71 shortly after arrival at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

Steve was born November 19, 1945 in Highland, Kansas. He made his home in the Doniphan and Brown County, Kansas area all his life. Steve attended Highland Community College and then went onto graduate from Kansas University’s Pharmacy School in 1968. Steve was drafted into the army that same year and served two years before returning to Hiawatha, Kansas in 1970 to establish Steve’s Corner Drugs.

His commitment to professional excellence lead to statewide collaboration and awards throughout his career. Steve placed a high priority on being an integral part of the community, volunteering and planning whenever asked, and serving on many community boards, including hospital, mental health, hospital foundation and, as a long family tradition, a 4-H club leader for 19 years. A committed member of the First United Methodist Church for multiple decades, Steve took active leadership roles in many church committees.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed agriculture with retirement years focused on many hours of gardening and other farm activities with his grandchildren. Steve’s attentiveness to every person in his life touched all who knew him.

Steve married Suzan Good on December 30, 1970. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, F.B. Smith.

Steve is survived by his wife Suzan, daughter Rachel Smith, Hiawatha; son Matthew (Cari), Smith, Sabetha; son Stuart (Tanna) Smith, Sharon Springs; daughter Mariah (Thomas) Lewis, Raymore, Missouri; brother Thomas (Elizabeth) Smith, Highland; sister Carol (Leonard) Smith, Kansas City, Missouri; and nine grandchildren: Jessie, Andrew and Jay Smith; Tyler and McKenzie Lewis; and Ryder, Nathan, Holt and Landry Smith. Steve enjoyed his large extended family, which includes many cousins as well.

A celebration of Steve's life is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday, February 2, at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, with Pastor Jacob Cloud officiating.  Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, with military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Ruthanna was born on December 29, 1925, in Warrensburg, MO, the daughter of Morton and Cecilia (Flynn) Hazell.  She was a housewife, but also the bookkeeper for her and her husband’s business, Marlatt Construction.  Ruthanna in her younger years enjoyed bowling and water skiing.  She also enjoyed traveling to Africa and going to the casinos. Ruthanna loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Ruthanna married Lester Martlatt on March 1, 1947 at the First Christian Church in Olathe, KS.  He preceded her in death on February 23, 2009. Survivors include two sons, Tom and Susie Marlatt, Atchison, KS, Steve and Patty Marlatt, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Shirley and Charles Cline, Atchison, KS, a daughter-n-law, Karen ( Marlatt) Hardesty, Peoria, IL, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Morton Marlatt and a granddaughter, Madison Marlatt.

Katie Ruthanne Perkins, 23, Hoyt, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, north of Topeka, as a result of an automobile accident.

She was born Aug. 6, 1993, at Holton, the daughter of Phil and Davida Ross Perkins. She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 2012.

Katie was a devoted mother and homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Katie was a great bargain hunter and loved going to garage sales. She enjoyed life to the fullest.

Survivors include her companion, Casey Jones, and her children, Andrew David Jones, Caleb Mitchell Jones, Alexis Danielle Jones, and Austin Michael Jones, all of the home; her parents, Phil and Davida Perkins, Valley Falls; her father and mother in-law, Gerald and Marcia Jones, Hoyt; two brothers, Phillip Perkins, Valley Falls, and William Michael Perkins, Topeka; two sisters, Carrie Perkins, Valley Falls, and Courtney Perkins, Effingham; grandmother, Gaynell Hobbs, Iola; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Shirley R. Duran, 83, of Highland, died early Saturday morning, January 28, 2017, at Highland Healthcare Center where she had been a resident for nearly 10 years.

Shirley was born at Horton, August 17, 1933, one of two children born to Francis Murray and Goldie Elizabeth Huber Coleman. 

She grew up at Troy.  She graduated at Highland High School in 1951; then attended and graduated Highland Junior College.  Shirley later graduated from Emporia State University with a master’s degree in English literature.  She returned to the area where she taught in Doniphan County schools, Sydney, Iowa, and Southeast Nebraska schools including Rulo until 1964.  In 1965, she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where she worked for the Environmental Protection Agency until 1996, when she retired and shortly thereafter, returned to Highland to make her home.

Shirley loved to raise a garden, especially digging in the dirt for her pretty flowers.

She married Robert C. Jones, August 23, 1956 before they divorced.  She married Nick Duran December 7, 1974 which also ended in divorce.

Survivors include her children:  Michael (Robin) Jones of rural Highland, daughter Teresa Price of White Cloud; grandchildren: Mike (Mindy) Jones, Caicey (Che) Jones, Sean (Nadia) Price; four nieces Michelle (Glenn) Wyatt, Valerie Coleman, Rhonda Roland, Leslie Coleman; four great-grandchildren:  Conner, Lexi, Lane, and Wyatt.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lester, sister-in-law Helen and a niece, Ruth.

A Celebration of Shirley’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland.  Interment will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.

Ardis Bernice (Gottula) Hunzeker  passed away January 28, 2017, at the age of 88 years at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital in Pawnee City NE.  She was born on July 20, 1928 to Albert Christopher Gottula and Esther Marie (Damm) Gottula, at the family’s home near Steinauer NE.

Ardis attended country school at Clear Creek.  She attended 2 years of parochial school at St Peter’s Lutheran Church near Elk Creek, and graduated from Table Rock High School in 1945.  She followed the normal training courses in high school and taught country school for a time after graduation.

Ardis married Art Hunzeker on October 19, 1946, at St Peter’s Lutheran Church.  Four children were born to this union.  Ardis and Art spent the early years of their married life south of Humboldt NE, living with Art’s brother Jake, and Jake’s wife (Ardis’s sister) Maxine.  Shortly before their son Russell’s birth, they moved to their farm south of Pawnee City.

Ardis was known by many in the community, having started working outside of the home in the late 1960’s; first as a nurse’s aide at the Pawnee Manor, then as a clerk at Warnke’s grocery store, then as a clerk at the S&G store.  In the late 1970’s Ardis was the tailor at Sawyer’s Clothing.  Her last job was as a clerk at Nider’s Thriftway.  In retirement, Ardis continued to do alternations for people in the community from her home.

Ardis was the daughter of a farmer, growing up during the Depression and the Dirty 30’s.  She became a farmer’s wife, and was no stranger to hard work, helping tend to the farm chores and her family at all hours of the day and night.  Ardis was a “mother bear” to her children, always ready to sacrifice for them and defended them when she felt it was needed and appropriate.  She was also a woman of deep faith, and shared her beliefs and love of God with her children.

Ardis is predeceased by her parents, her husband Art, sister Lois Bowen and brother Kenneth Gottula.  She is survived by her sister Maxine Hunzeker, and brother Harold Gottula; also her children, Janet Perrin and husband Jan of Lincoln NE, Barbara Chambers and husband Keith of Lantana TX, Russell Hunzeker and wife Marcia of Houston TX, and Judy Siefken and husband Bruce of Lewisville TX.  Ardis also held near to her heart her 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, with one more to arrive in March.

Nadine Delzeit, 91, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Wathena Nursing & Rehab Center.  

Nadine was born on February 12, 1925 in Leona, Kansas to Robert & Ona (Bond) Richter. She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, 4-H leader for 15 years, Happy Valley Homemaker Extension Unit & American Legion Auxiliary. Nadine retired in 1991 from JC Penny’s as a seamstress. She made many people happy by being able to sew, alter & mend their clothes. 
Nadine married Francis Delzeit on February 25, 1946 in Hiawatha, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 1, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents & a brother, Rosco “Pete” Richter.

STACEY L. PIPKINS KANSAS CITY, MO- Stacey Lynn Pipkins, 51, of Kansas City, MO passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, MO. She was born December 20, 1965 in Topeka, KS the daughter of Gerald Charles Haag and Mary Lou (Slocum) Haag. Stacey graduated from Seaman High School in 1984. She had lived in Kansas City, MO for 12 ½ years and previously in Las Vegas, California and Indiana. Stacey worked for over 30 years in banking. She began as a teller and later served as assistant manager and branch manager. Stacey had a kind and loving heart, a great sense of humor and held a special place in her heart for animals. Survivors include her mother, Mary Lou Link of St. Joseph, MO; her brother, Charlie Haag of Topeka, KS; her step-mother, Mary Ann Haag of Topeka, KS; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Jimmy Dean Stevens, 72, Valley Falls, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka. He was born July 12, 1944, at Atchison, the son of Scottie Francis and Marian Hosford Stevens. Jimmy was a warehouse man at the Ft. Leavenworth US Army Base, retiring after working there for 25 years. He had worked for many years for Jefferson County Public School at Denver, CO. He was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church. He married Maralene Crawley April 28, 1973, at Lakewood, CO. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Shelley Renee Lopez, Jan. 3, 2003. Survivors include his wife, Maralene, of the home; four sons, Barry (Dezerie) Stevens, Broomfield, CO, Ed Crawley, Morrison, CO, Flint Crawley, Arvada, CO, and Todd Crawley, Ozawkie, KS; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Allen Broadbent, formerly of Corning, Kansas, died Saturday, January 21st, at the age of 74.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 28 at 3 p.m. at the Corning city cemetery.

His family will be at the Corning Community Center from 1 to 3 prior to the graveside service.   

John Henry Rottinghaus, 78, of Seneca, Kansas, died suddenly Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at his farm north of Seneca.

John was born in Seneca, on March 6, 1938, the son of John I. and Ethel Wietharn

Rottinghaus. He attended grade school in St. Benedict and graduated from St. Benedict High School in 1956. In the fall of 1956 John went to St. Benedict College in Atchison for two years until his father had a stroke and he returned to the farm to help with the operation. While in College John entered the Army National Guard and was attached to Btry “A” 2 nd How.BN. 130 th Artillery, military and was discharge as a PFC.

On August 14, 1965 John married Gladys M. Mueting at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. After getting married John and Gladys moved to a farm that the owned north of St.Benedict. John and Gladys moved in to Seneca in 2012 but john continued to farm until his death.

John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1769 in Seneca. John had also served on the Church council.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Gladys of Seneca; three sons, Mike (Nichole) Rottinghaus of Loveland Colorado, Steve (Shawna) Rottinghaus of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Kevin of Olatha; two daughters Shelly (Mark) Frohardt of Lenexa and Becky (Eric) Boehmer of Bern; two brothers, Leroy (Grace) Rottinghaus of Lee's Summit, Missouri, and Eugene (Karen) Rottinghaus of Plano, Texas; and three sisters, Mary Jane (Leo) Hammes of Seneca, Rita (Bob) Buessing of Seneca, and Joann Rottinghaus of Seneca.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John I. on October 30, 1961 and Ethel on March 10, 2011; a brother Francis on September 19, 2008, his sister, Janice Heiman on July 13, 2008, and two infant sisters, Mary and RoseAnn.

Rosaries will be prayed 2 P.M. on Sunday, January 29, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial, will be 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 30, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. The burial will be in the church cemetery.

L.B. Grosfield, 86, of rural Hiawatha, Kansas passed away on 25 Jan 2017 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

He was born in Horton, KS the only son of Henry and Ruth (Crawford) Grosfield. He lived his entire life near Willis, KS except for the time spent in military active duty. He graduated from Willis High School in 1948 as valedictorian of his class and began farming with his father after graduation.

He married his sweetheart, Pauline Earp, on 26 Sept 1953. They were blessed with four wonderful daughters. He continued to pursue his passion for farming throughout his life, semi-retiring in the latter years to care for Pauline.

L.B. served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1948 until he officially retired as a Major in 1990. He began his military service when he joined the Kansas Army National Guard, Battery “C” 154th FA Battalion in Horton, KS in 1948. He was assigned in 1958 to Hq 154th FA BN in Hiawatha as Recon/Survey officer and returned to Horton as Commander of Battery B 2/130 FA from 1964 to 1966. He was called to active duty in April 1968, serving with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam as Assistant Airfield Commander. He attended intelligence, chemical, and artillery schools in various locations in the U.S. He was also awarded the Bronze Star and received an Army Commendation Medal for his service.

L.B. was a member of the Everest Zion Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and cemetery board. He also served his community on the Mission Township board for many years. L.B. was a quiet, humble man who earned the respect and the admiration of many. He was a Godly example for his family every day.

Survivors include his 4 daughters, Tonya Jones (Michael Lambert) of Lawrence, KS, Michele (Bruce) Gaskell of rural Hiawatha, KS, Paula (Kevin) Hoops of Byron, NE, and Nada (Donnie) Uber of Peculiar, Mo, as well as his sister, Naideen Tucker of Moultrie, GA, 16 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and was anticipating the arrival of his 7th great grandchild. L.B. is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, his parents, Henry and Ruth, and brother-in-law, Ronald Tucker. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, 28 January 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church north of Everest, Kansas.

The family will greet friends at 10:00 am prior to the service. Burial with Military Graveside Rights will be at the church cemetary immediately following the service.

Ruth Amelia Niemeyer Titus, 92, of Falls City, Nebraska, passed away January 25, 2017, at Falls City Care Center.

Ruth was born February 4, 1924, in Falls City, the daughter of Ernest and Edna Gibble Niemeyer and was a lifelong resident of the Falls City area. She was raised on the family farm SE of town they farmed, ran a weekend popcorn business, as well as, the local dairy creamery.

She married Frank Titus, January 1, 1940 and together they raised three children. While Frank worked at the Post Office, Ruth did gardening and canning. She took in laundry for many years and was active with the Nemaha Valley Rabbit Breeders Association. Ruth also spent several years working at the local nursing home prior to taking care of the local Laundromat. Frank died in 1992.

Ruth enjoyed yard sales, as well as, being a talented seamstress and quilter. She collected glassware, bells, oil lamps, glass paperweights, and rabbit figurines.

Ruth was a long time member of Grace Baptist Church.

In 1998, Ruth and Vernon Moorshead from Robinson, exchanged vows and made their home in Falls City until his death March 23, 2002.

Ruth is survived by her children: Jeraldine McDonald, James (Joyce) Titus, and Julie (Randy) Houser, all of Falls City; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include Vernon’s children: Vernon Moorshead, Jean Soden, Vernetta McDonald, Verna K. Talbot, Frances Schoolcraft; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and her brother Robert.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on her birthday, 2 p.m. Saturday, February 4, at the Christ Church of Falls City, 705 Stone St., Falls City, with Dan Farley officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date.

Thomas Robert Winters, 73, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the home.

Tom was born April 29, 1943, in Highland,  Kansas.    He is survived by his wife, Lucia Louise Winters: daughters, Cindy Duncan and Renae LaBattaglia and brother Gary Winters.

Dorothy Ann Deters, 83, of Seneca died on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Life Care Center in Seneca.

Dorothy was born July 13, 1933 in Corning, Kansas the daughter of Willis Wilfred and Elizabeth F. Rethman Walters. Dorothy grew up in Corning and went to school Corning Public school; graduating from high school in 1950. As a young woman, she went to work for Skiles Telephone Company in Corning before going to work at the Browns telephone company in Centralia.

On April 22, 1954 Dorothy married Raymond L. Deters at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Corning.  As a young couple, they farmed south of Baileyville for a couple of years; then moved to Vermillion for four years. In 1962, they moved to a farm east of Seneca; and then in 1973 they bought the farm south of Seneca where she resided until her passing.

Dorothy had many interests in her life but really enjoyed casino trips, quilting, baking, cooking and working in her garden. She was an animal lover, especially her kittens.
She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Memorial Post #7458 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children, Carl (Frances) Deters of Topeka, Kathleen Houser of Topeka, Susan (Galen) Huninghake of Baileyville, Thomas (Julene) Deters of Baileyville, Geraldine (Stephen) Staley of Centralia, Wayne (Stacy) Deters of Springfield, MO, Marvin (Danita) Deters of Manhattan, Betty Deters of Seneca and Vern (Gail) Deters of Seneca; Two brothers, Larry Walters of Lenexa, Lyle Walters of Warrensburg, Missouri, five sisters, Mary Morrison of Warrensburg, Missouri, Lela Walters of Seneca, Helen Hurla of Liberty Missouri, Wanda Horton of Troy and Barbara Warford of Wymore, Nebraska. 19 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Preceding Dorothy in death was her husband of 62 years, Raymond on May 11, 2016; her parents; daughter, Connie Diane Deters on April 8, 1959; and two sisters, Joyce Fiala and Edith Broxterman.

Rosaries are Friday, January 27th at 2 and 7 P.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10 A.M. at Sts. Peter & Paul in Seneca. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, in Baileyville; she will be laid to rest next to her husband and her daughter, Connie.

Patty Jane (McCoy) Smart, 85, loving wife and mother, died Monday, January 23, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

Patty was born on Sept. 20, 1931 in Halls, MO the daughter of Landon and Lena Mae (Wilson) McCoy. She graduated from Benton High School, St. Joseph, MO in 1949. Patty worked for “Big Smith Overall” Company after high school, was co-owner of the Hilligoss Shoe Store, and a Mary Kay Consultant for over 20 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, Bible School, volunteered with Awana Children’s Ministry and sang in the church choir. Patty served as Past President of BPW, was a member of Zonta and the 99s clubs. She loved taking walks, singing, fishing and her cherished indoor and outdoor gardens. Patty was also an avid KU and Chiefs fan.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Douglas A. Smart. Additional survivors include her six daughters: Linda Smart Robinson and the late Samuel Robinson II, Lyman, NH; Sharon Kay and husband Brian Shaw, Garden City, KS; Mary Jane and husband Robert Montgomery, Leawood, KS; Peggy Lynn and husband Douglas Barnes, Plano, TX; Joyce Ann and husband William Smith, Shawnee, KS; and Sarah Kim and the late Rex Biechele, Atchison KS. In addition, she enjoyed fourteen grandchildren: Jeffery (Brianna) Lagomarsino, Kimberly Lagomarsino, Carrye Jane (Carlos) Mantilla, Taylor Douglas Shaw, Lauren Gruchala, Jason (Anne) Downing, Gilbert Downing, Laura Smith, Adam Biechele, Rachael Biechele, Christine Buel, Travis Smith, Caitlin (Jake) Rhodes, and MacKenzie Smith. She has nine adoring great grandchildren: Miles and Landon Downing, Mateo and Luca Mantilla, Summer Gruchala, Marissa and Alex Harris, Maya Smith, and Violet Rhodes. She is also survived by a sister, Betty (Don) Masters, Gallatin, MO, a granddaughter-in-law, Xiaowei and the late Gregory Gruchala. Preceding her in death are her parents and siblings: Lavena (Russell) Wilson, Esther (John) Gibson, Alice (Pete) Lapaglia, Ruth (George) Elo, Shirley (Brownie) Brown, infant siblings Hyla and Landon Jr, a grandson, and two son-in-laws.

Emily Ann Barber Aitkens, 64, of Topeka, KS formerly of Mayetta, KS passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. She was born July 19, 1952 in Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of Willis L. and Julia Ann (Cook) Barber.

Emily attended Holton High School and attended one year at Haskell University. She was a Certified Nurse Aide, Prairie Band Potawatomi CHR and a homemaker. Emily was a member of the Potawatomi Pentecostal Church and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. 

Survivors include a daughter, Tifany Gurden of Topeka, KS; 4 grandchildren, Daylene Johannes, Shaylene Perry, Stevauciae Perry and Montoy Perry; 5 great grandchildren, Jaylah Williams, Joell Wilson, Jessiah Wilson, Athena Emily Perry and Catalina Perry; 2 sisters, Nancy Barber-Counts of Mayetta, KS and Lori Molina of Topeka, KS; 3 brothers, Jeff Barber, Tony Barber and Dwayne Barber all of Delia, KS.

Betty LaVerna Stukenholtz, age 78 of Nebraska City died January 14, 2017 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA. Betty was born March 12, 1938 in Nebraska City, the daughter of Vernon A. and Alice (Otto) Stukenholtz. She formerly lived in Virginia and Lincoln before returning to the Nebraska City area in 2003. Betty worked as a secretary in various government offices, including the Department of the Navy and Congressman Phil Weaver in Washington, D.C. and served as Nebraska Deputy State Treasurer under Frank Marsh. She also worked at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln for a time. Upon her return to Nebraska City, she purchased Harmony Rural School and opened Monkey Business. She was a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Questers, Otoe County Genealogical Society and the Lincoln Mayor’s Friendship Committee. Betty started the Nebraska Country School Association and the Annual Country School Conference, which is still ongoing.

Survivors include her brother, Alan Stukenholtz and his wife Carol of Auburn; niece and nephews, Elaine Karel of Johnson; Bill Stukenholtz and his wife Cari of Lincoln; Ty Stukenholtz and his wife Beth of Auburn; Jay Stukenholtz and his wife Mary of Nebraska City; Rod Stukenholtz and his wife Julie of Merrill, IA; sister in law, Joyce Stukenholtz of Pharr, TX; many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Wayne Stukenholtz; infant sister, Mary Alice Stukenholtz and nephew, Mitchell Stukenholtz.

A joint memorial service for Betty and her brother, Wayne Stukenholtz will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Saint Paul United Methodist Church, 1144 M Street in Lincoln. Private burial of ashes will take place at a later date.

Jack Lee Allen, 75, of Robinson, died Saturday evening, January 21, 2017 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

Jack was born at Robinson, April 2, 1941, one of three children born to Asa and Ruth Haney Allen and moved with his family at a young age to Bellevue, Nebraska. He grew up there where he attended school and graduated high school. Jack spent his working life in Bellevue: worked for the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce a number of years, and later served as director to the SAC Museum, at that time located at Offutt AFB, before retiring and returning to Robinson. He spent many hours working and volunteering at the Robinson Community Store.

Jack was a member of the Air Force Association. To say Jack was a Nebraska Husker fan was an understatement! He held season tickets to their games for many, many years.

Survivors include two brothers: Jerry Allen of Bellevue, Jim Allen of Waterloo, NE; nieces: Julie Grace and Michelle Allen; a nephew Jeff Allen; and good friends and caregiver to Jack, the Brian Stroud family.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister Mary Jeanne Allen

It was Jack’s wish to be cremated with no formal service being planned.

Floyd W. “Mike” Peak, 73, Atchison, Kansas died unexpectedly Monday, January 23, 2017 at his home.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Floyd was born March 22, 1943 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Asa W. and Edna Clark Peak.  He attended schools in Atchison, graduating from Atchison High School in 1961.

He was formerly employed at Boeing in Wichita, Kansas then returned to Atchison where he worked as a machinist and in maintenance for Rockwell International for over twenty five years until his retirement.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  Mike enjoyed woodworking and making several pieces of furniture, reading, fishing and spending time with his family.

Ila Mae (Gilfillan) Arnold was born on April 16th, 1929 at the family farm near Mound City, MO. She was the youngest of the six children blessed to Eugene Ray and Emma Helen (Buntz) Gilfillan.

On March 1, 1934, when she was four years old, her family moved to the 80 acre farm that her father purchased from her grandparents, Charles Stewart and Barbara Ellen (Black) Gilfillan, located three miles west and two and one half miles south of Verdon, NE. She walked one and a half miles to county school, District #45, from 1st through 8th grades. She then attended Dawson High School in Dawson, NE, graduating with 17 classmates in 1947.

Ila Mae married her high school sweetheart, Walter Eugene Arnold, Jr., on August 1, 1948. They lived at several rural places south and west of Verdon, when first married, later moving to Falls City, NE. In 1956, they purchased a farm located two and one half miles south of Morrill, KS where they raised three children. They tended to their cattle, hogs, and chickens, and operated a Grade B Dairy. Ila Mae farmed alongside her husband planting and harvesting corn, soybeans, milo, wheat, oats, and alfalfa. When they retired from farming in March of 1978, they moved back to their present day home in Verdon. Walt passed away on November 17, 1979. Ila Mae began working as an in home health care provider for several elderly couples in Falls City, as well did housekeeping for residents in Verdon and Falls City for many years.

Her faith with Christ was evident as she was a member of the Verdon Christian Church where she and Walt were married. She was baptized in and became a member of the church of Christ in Sabetha, KS and later in Falls City.

Ila Mae was an avid farmer and gardener all of her life. She loved growing, canning, freezing, and sharing her produce. Cooking and baking, sewing, crocheting, quilting, carpentry, and mechanics also filled her life with purpose, but there was nothing more important to her than all of her family.

She lived in Verdon until August of 2016, and then became a member of Falls City Healthcare Community and later a resident of the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, KS because of complications following surgery. She was the oldest living resident in Verdon and will be greatly missed by her neighbors, friends, as well as many relatives.

She is survived by: her daughters, Nancy (Zane) Painter of Sabetha, KS; Cynthia (Phillip) Fritz of Verdon, NE; and a son, Daniel (Regina) Arnold of Atwater, CA; grandchildren, Nick (Crystal) Painter of Topeka, KS; Jennifer (Sid) Ewing of Hutchinson, KS; Melissa (Joe) Chavez; Laura (Don) Hyler, III, Jon (Jennifer) Arnold, all of Atwater, CA; Erin (Zak) Harrington, Spicewood, TX; Jed (Rachel) Fritz, Verdon, NE. Her sixteen great-grandchildren, Faith, Reyna, Joe Jr., and Uriah Chavez; Braeden, Reagen, and Dallas Hyler; Eliana, Logan, and Weston Arnold; Aubrey and Layla Ewing, Finley and Garrett Harrington; and Halleigh and Casen Fritz, her sister, Maxine Arnold of Sabetha, KS; many nieces and nephews and their families.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, her siblings and their spouses; Warren (Nancy) Gilfillan, Wayne (Bessie) Gilfillan, Clyda (Harold) Schmidt, Evelyn (Dick) Wilhelm, and a brother-in-law, Norman Arnold.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at the Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Dave Clark officiating. Interment will be held at Verdon Cemetery.

Steven Lance Johnson, 59 of Pawnee City, Nebraska passed away at his home on Saturday, January 21, 2017 in Pawnee City.  He was born on February 13, 1957 to Ralph and Ramona (Buchholz) Johnson in Pawnee City, Nebraska.

He was raised in Pawnee County and attended school in Table Rock, Nebraska.

Steve married Roseanne “Rose” Reese on September 25, 2001 in Syracuse, Nebraska.

Steve was a truck driver for different companies, then retired from trucking and started working for Pawnee County Roads Department until the time of his death.

Steve loved dogs, helped rescue dogs and loved feeding the birds.

He was preceded in death by his father Ralph Johnson, wife, Roseanne “Rose” Johnson.

Steve is survived by his mother Ramona Johnson of Table Rock, NE, siblings, Sue Sedersten, Nebraska City, NE, Ralph Johnson of Howells, NE, , Sheila Wenzl of Pawnee City, NE, son Jimmy Johnson of Oklahoma, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Norman “Norm” W. Belveal, of Nortonville, died Saturday at the age of 86.

A memorial service for Norm Belveal, of Nortonville, will be Saturday morning at 11:00 at the New Covenant United Methodist Church, in Nortonville.

Eva N. Rasch, 89, Topeka, died peacefully Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at her home, with her granddaughter, Virginia Rutherford, at her side.

She was born Oct. 6, 1927, at Princeton, in Franklin County, the daughter of Frank L. and Thelma H. Graves Herring. She graduated from Rock Creek High School, north of Meriden.

Eva worked at the Jostens Plant in Topeka for 31 years, retiring in 1991. She had also worked at Dollar General in Topeka as a cashier for 12 years.

She married Donald D. Rasch, Sept. 22, 1944, at Rock Creek. They divorced.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn Heintzelman; three brothers, Jay, James & Leonard Herring; and five sisters, Lynette Fleming, Leola McLain, Ruth Baker, Helen Sheldon and Mary Robison.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Virginia Rutherford, of the home; her son, Dana L. (Deborah) Rasch, Peoria, AZ; two sisters, June Ashley, Denison, and Nelda McMillan, Topeka; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Helen Schmelzle, 94, of Seneca, Kansas passed away January 21, 2017 at Life Care Center in Seneca, going home to the arms of her Savior and Lord who she loved all the days of her life. Helen was born July 8, 1922 on a farm Northwest of Seneca; daughter of Louis August and Ella Marie Hurley Haefele.

She attended St. Peter and Paul Grade School and graduated from St Peter & Paul High School in 1940.  She married Gilbert J. Schmelzle on April 12, 1947 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.  They celebrated many wonderful anniversaries having been blessed with 63+ years of marriage before his death.
 
During their first 9 years of marriage they started a family and farmed at Seneca and Centralia.   In 1956 they moved to a farm of their own a few miles south and west of Corning.  She was a faithful wife and loving mother and homemaker.   She gave of her time to her children, passing on her faith in her Lord, helping with homework and school projects, always trying to help provide for their needs in many ways; all the while helping her husband run a Grade A dairy farm and a registered dog kennel.  Her beautiful little puppies delighted her grandchildren and went on to find wonderful homes.   She would sometimes receive phone calls and letters from their happy owners.

When they moved to Corning, they joined St Patrick Catholic Church where she was a faithful member for 41 years.  She served on the Altar Society, being a Band Leader and Vice President, serving her church wherever needed from leadership roles at Parish Picnics, and many humble ways like cleaning the church and making quilts with other friends from St. Patrick.  She continued to enjoy sewing over the years making many beautiful quilts and needle work pieces, giving them as personal gifts to her children and grandchildren.   

She also served her community as President of the American Legion Auxiliary at Corning Post # 37.  She was active in the Red Vermillion 4H Club, serving as sewing leader for 2 years. Helen and Gilbert enjoyed playing Cards with a Card Party Group of special friends for over 25 years.  

In 1997 Helen and Gilbert retired and moved to Seneca and once again became members of St Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she had been baptized and they had been married.  For many years, Helen and Gilbert prayed together at an hour of Adoration each week.  

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert who was her life and prayer partner; caring for each other ever since they met.  Her parents, Louis and Ella Haefele and 3 brothers, Louis Haefele, Leonard Haefele and Joseph Haefele who died shortly after birth; and 1 sister Mary Ann Beatty; 3 grandchildren, Angela Harrington, Sean Harrington and Richard Harrington.  

She is survived by her family who she watched over with love:   5 children: Mary Lou Gudenkauf and her husband, Ken, of Topeka, Kansas; Karen Harrington and her husband, Jim, of Plano, Texas; Julie Nichol and her husband, Tom, of Neodesha, Kansas;  Greg Schmelzle and his wife, Debbie, of Onaga, Kansas; Joan Henry and her husband, Rick of Seneca, Kansas; 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren;  Two sisters, Rose Solar and Betty Haefele.

Helen spent her life dedicated to her Lord and His Blessed Mother, her Family, her Church, her Friends and Community.

Wilma Evelyn Hunninghake, 90, of Seneca, formerly of Baileyville, died Friday, January 20, 2017 at Crestview Nursing and Residential Living in Seneca.

Wilma born on February 16, 1926, on a farm northwest of St. Benedict; one of nine children of Henry and Josephine Vondenkamp Bergman. Wilma attended St. Mary’s School in St. Benedict, Kansas and graduated in 1944. As a young woman, she went to work in Topeka.

On June 3, 1946, she married Lester Hunninghake at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. The couple made their home on a farm northwest of Baileyville; where they had a dairy and raised various crops. The couple moved to Seneca in August of 2012. Lester passed away on May 21, 2013 after 67 years of marriage. Wilma worked at the meat locker in Axtell and Beattie for a few years. She was also employed at the Apple Market where she was the manager of the bakery. She also enjoyed the years she volunteered at the Sts. Peter and Paul Mission Center in Seneca.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Wilma was very active in the church, as chair of the quilting committee, on the church choir and as an Eucharistic minister. She was actively involved in the implementation of the senior lunch program. She enjoyed playing cards, baking, cooking, wall papering, traveling, doing crafts and attending craft shows, dancing and polka music.  It gave her great pleasure attending the ballgames of her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Emmett, Henry Jr., Ralph and Kenneth; two sisters, Irene Heise and Edith Wessel; and a grandson, Bradley J. Hunninghake on August 13, 1994.

She is survived by three sons; James (Carol) Hunninghake of Green Ridge, Missouri, Deloye (Carol) Hunninghake of Baileyville and Gale (Mary Jane) Hunninghake of Seneca; a daughter, Brenda (Mark) Meyer of Baileyville; a brother, Donald of Harditon, NE; a sister, Jerian Rethman of Seneca; 11 grandchildren: and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 AM Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM on Monday, January 23rd, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

 Thayle M. Keller, 93, of Holton, KS passed away Friday, January 20, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. She was born February 14, 1923 in Mayetta, KS the daughter of Frank Aloysius and Mary (Battese) Maines.

Thayle graduated from Indian High School in Lawrence. She had worked for Seymour Egg Plant in Topeka, Sunflower Ordinance in Desoto, Slimaker Dress Factory in Holton and Atchison Leather Company. Thayle and her sister Claire (who preceded her in death) had lived most of their life taking care of each other in their later years.

She was baptized in the Catholic Church while she was attending high school. Thayle was also a member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi Nation.

Survivors include her niece, whom she raised since age 6, Deanna Joy (Maines) Mercer of Topeka, KS and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 sisters and 2 brothers.

Dorothy E. Bergman Schraad 82, of Seneca, Kansas, died peacefully on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Dorothy was born in Baileyville on August 8, 1934 to Lawrence and Cornelia “Cora” Stallbaumer Hammes. She attended school there and graduated from Baileyville High School in 1952. After graduating high school, she attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska.

On April 27, 1957 she married Vern Edward Bergman in Livermore, California, where they lived until 1961. Then they farmed in Harrisonville, Missouri, for four years before they moved back to Seneca, where she and her husband owned and operated Bergman Ford Sales from 1965-1970. After moving to Topeka in 1970, Dorothy worked at Dale Sharp Inc. and Sharp-Honda for 25 years. They raised a family of four children and were married for 31 years before his death on October 16, 1988. She married Francis Schraad on April 16, 1994 and returned to Seneca, where she worked for Haug Communications until she retired.

Dorothy was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. She was a devoted wife and mother and an active member in the VFW Auxiliary in Nemaha. She enjoyed sewing and often made clothes for her children, and even Halloween costumes for her grandchildren.

Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Hammes on November 21, 1967.

She is survived by her husband Francis of Seneca; a son, Edward (Cheryl) of Topeka; daughters, Janet Bergman of Topeka, Judy (Joel) Warkentine of Topeka, and Lisa (Lawrence) Chase of Marietta, Georgia; six brothers, Alvin, Gerald, Galen, Kenneth and Leo, all of Seneca, and Larry of Topeka; four sisters, Cleta Mae Haverkamp and Jeanette Becker, both of Seneca, Bernice Heiman of Baileyville, and Mary Rose Feuerborn of Richmond; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by five step-children, Mark (Kristin) of Evergreen, Colorado, Carol (David) of Grove, Oklahoma, Keith of Denver, Colorado, Diane (Greg) Mason of Raymore, Missouri and Daryl of Evergreen, Colorado; 12 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Wayne Orean Hale, 77, of Atchison KS died Thursday, January 19, 2017 at the Atchison Hospital with his family by his side.

Wayne was born on Nov 15th, 1939 in Atchison, KS the son of Orean and Bethel (Buchanan) Hale. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1957. He was the second generation owner/operator for Hale’s Service Center, Atchison. After he retired and sold the business he enjoyed traveling with his wife Shirley, attending the McDonald’s Coffee Club, and was the delivery driver for the Berger Company. He was a member of the First Christian Church and will be remembered for always having a joke to tell.

Wayne was married to Shirley Ann Miller on June 25, 1961 at the First Christian Church, Atchison. Mrs. Hale preceded him in death on May 4, 2014. Survivors include a son, Rod (Sandy Jamvold) Hale, Atchison, two daughters, Amy (Brian) Oswalt and Tammy (Glenn) Parrott, both of Atchison, KS, three grandchildren, Jake (Becca) Oswalt, Mason Oswalt, and Derrick Parrott and special friend Vicki O’Connor, Atchison, KS. His parents, wife- Shirley, and brother Wendell Hale preceded him in death.

Larry K. Fund, 75, of Wetmore, KS passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017 at his home. He was born June 10, 1941 in Sabetha, the son of Alec and Marty (Hawley) Fund.

Larry graduated from Goff High School in 1959. After graduation, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1959 – 1963. Larry lived most of his life in the Wetmore community. He worked for AT&T from 1963 – 1969 and later for JBN and ICOM at Wetmore as an Electronic Technician and later in management.

He was a member of the Wetmore United Methodist Church, Wetmore American Legion Post #282 and past member of Wetmore Lions Club.

Larry married Betty Jane Cooper on February 1, 1963 in Coward, South Carolina. She survives of the home. Other survivors include 3 sons, Bruce Fund (Martha), Brad Fund (Sarah) and Bryan Fund (Jennifer) all of Wetmore, KS; 3 sisters, Nancy Rillinger (Larry) of Goff, KS, Sharon Heiman (Lambert) of Seneca, KS and Karen McClasky (Mike) of Hoyt, KS; 2 brothers, Alan Fund (Brenda) of Silver Lake, KS and Dennis Fund (Mary Beth) of Wamego, KS; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and an adopted grandson, Lil Man.

 He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rocky Fund.

Ellen May Furgason Stoll, of Topeka, entered Heaven January 18, 2017. She was born July 22, 1921 in Topeka to Bert and Maggie May Mitchell Furgason. She had 2 older brothers, Harry and Raymond “Bill”, and a younger sister, Mary. She grew up playing softball and basketball. In 1939 she graduated from Topeka High School, and later from Stewart’s Beauty Academy.

Ellen met the love of her life, Edward William Stoll, in 1947 on a blind date at Meadow Acres Ballroom in Topeka. They married January 22, 1949, and made their home on a farm southwest of Holton. Daughter, Sally Ellen was born in 1957.

Ellen was a farm wife and homemaker. She loved to sew and bake, and took great pride in her home.  She was very active in her church, Evangel United Methodist as a Sunday school and VBS teacher, youth superintendent, and member of King’s Daughters class.  She was a project leader for Sunshine Winners 4-H Club, and volunteered in many of her daughter’s clubs and activities.  She was very dedicated and loving in her role as wife, mother, and grandma.

 Ellen was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 64 years, and her two brothers and their wives.  Survivors include daughter Sally and her husband, Kurt Thomas Jorgensen, three grandsons, Ryan Thomas and wife, Iris, Kyle Edward, and Eric Ross Jorgensen, two great grandsons, Edward Thomas and Leon William Jorgensen, sister, Mary and husband Glen Henderson, sister-in-law, Emily Jane Stoll, and many nieces, nephews, and their families.

 She was known as Elmay, Tootsie Babe, Mom, Gramma, Aunt May, and GG – and loved by all.

Velma was born on April 22, 1926 in Cummings, KS the daughter of Ira and Ruth (Ely) Surritte. She attended White Clay grade school and Atchison County Community High School, Effingham. Velma was a homemaker and housewife. She was a member of the Cummings Christian Church, and enjoyed crocheting, sewing, decorating their home, and was a good cook and pie baker. She had fond memories of shopping with her mother, hosting fish fries, and going to the casino with her husband.

She was married to Roy W. Rosenburg on Nov. 27th, 1947 in St. Louis MO. Mr. Rosenburg preceded her in death on March 8, 2015. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Keith) Young, Effingham, KS and Connie (Bud) Parrett, Leavenworth, KS, three grandchildren, Jodi (Mike) Guetterman, Holly (Scott) Jeschke, Ryan (Ashley) Young, ten great grandchildren and one on the way. Her parents, husband, and sister, Betty Counts preceded her in death.

Earl Richard Bowie, 91, of Burleson, TX, formerly of Holton, KS passed away Monday, January 16, 2017 at Mustang Creek Estates in Burleson, TX. He was born March 26, 1925 near Valley Falls, KS the son of Joseph Harvey and Dora Elaine (Hitlerbrand) Bowie.

Earl had lived in Holton from 1998 - 2015 and in McLouth from 1955-1998. He had moved to Texas in 2015. He was a farmer and dairyman most of his life.

Earl married Melva Luella Tosh on April 12, 1946 in Valley Falls, KS. She preceded him in death on September 17, 2015. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Chris Bowie and 10 siblings.

Leslie Eugene Smith, 85, Atchison, Kansas died Monday, January 16, 2017 at the St. Luke’s Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Graveside services and interment of cremated remains will be Friday, January 20, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Leslie was born on April 16, 1931 in Highland, Kansas the son of Henry and Gretha (Scofield) Smith. He graduated from the Atchison County Community High School.

He and the former Doris M. Watowa were united in marriage on November 5, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Church in Atchison.

Leslie was formerly employed for Page Airways in Atchison. Then he began working as a machinist-mechanic for Bendix Corporation, later with Allied Signal Corporation and then Honeywell, all in Kansas City, retiring in 1995.

He served his country in the United States Army from December 8, 1953 until his honorable discharge on December 7, 1955.

He was always active and enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing and camping. He was a dedicated husband and father to his family.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Doris M. Smith, Atchison, KS, two daughters, Sheryl (Terry) Sanders, Atchison, KS, Beverly (David) Kentzler, Atchison, KS, a son, Tom (Melinda) Smith, St. Joseph, MO, a sister, JoAnn Walton, Sabetha, KS, six grandchildren, one step grandchild, five great grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ernest A. Werner, 95, of Falls City, NE passed away January 17, 2017 at Falls City. He was born to the late Ernest and Anna (Tubach) Werner.

He was in the U.S. Army from August 20, 1942 to February 20 1945.

He married Thelma McCann on January 21, 1946 at Hiawatha, KS. She later passed away on March 31, 1997.

Ernest was raised at Falls City and graduated Falls City High School in 1939. After high school he enlisted into the Army, upon discharge he returned to Falls City and worked on the family farm. When married the couple established their home on the family farm which was five miles northeast of Falls City. He farmed his entire life until retiring in the early 1980’s. Following retirement they would travel to Texas in the winters and then back to Falls City for the summers. He delivered propane for Heetco Inc. for many years. He enjoyed selling antiques and making his tramp art by the name Ho Bo Ernie.

Ernest is survived by daughters, Janet Trompke and her husband Larry of Lewellen, NE; Joyce Lyons and her husband Dave of Falls City; son, Steven Werner and his wife Wilma of Stella, NE; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-greatchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister, Gertrude Freeby.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 10:00 A.M at the Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Weinert officiating. Inurnment will be at Steele Cemetery.

Lester G. Nelson, 91, of Falls City, NE passed away January 18, 2017 at Falls City, NE. He was born September 11, 1925 at Oakland, NE to the late George and Amy (Johnson) Nelson.

Lester was drafted into the U.S. Army on September 21, 1945 and was honorably discharged on February 6, 1947. While serving he earned a World War II Victory Medal and an Army of Occupation Medal.

He married Anna Mangold on February 16, 1948 at Falls City. She later passed away on March 18, 2012.

Lester was raided in Oakland, NE and graduated from Oakland High School in 1942. After high school he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Upon discharged he moved to Craig, NE and farmed. When married the couple made their home on a farm near Oakland until moving to a farm near Falls City in 1956 where he farmed, operated a grain bin, and a Farm Building Construction Company. He was also a master plumber and electrician. He retired in 2010. The couple enjoyed traveling throughout the United States to visit relatives. He is a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 20th and Towle.

Lester is survived by daughter, Barbara Watlington and her husband Michael of Falls City; brothers, Howard Nelson and his wife Carol of Virginia; Kenneth Nelson and his wife Joyce of Lakeland, FL; sisters, Marie Crom of Blair, NE; Phyllis Barth and her husband Glen of Elkhorn, NE; grandchildren, Mark Watlington and his wife Satin of Stillwater, MN; John Watlington and his wife Jo of Falls City; great-grandchildren, Carter, Pierson, and Jacob. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, great-grandson, Sean Watlington, and a brother in infancy.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 20th and Towle, with Pastor Andrew Chavanak officiating.

Ivan Lee Hinrichsen, 83, of Dawson, Nebraska passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017 at Community Medical Center in Falls City, Nebraska.  He was born on October 18, 1933 to John and Mildred (Reis) Hinrichsen in Springfield, Nebraska and then moved to Pawnee City, Nebraska with his four brothers and two sisters.  When he was out of school, Ivan became a brick mason.  Then from 1955-1957 he was drafted to the United States Army and went to Germany, where he was a Marksman Rifle Expert. After returning home Ivan  went to Lincoln and worked as a brick mason and later he retired from brick mason.

Ivan met his future wife Charleen Flanagin and they were married March 15, 1958.  To this union they had two children, Roger Lee and Debora Dee.

Ivan was a great family man, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and just spending time with his family.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mildred Hinrichsen,  brothers, Melvin & wife Wanda Hinrichsen, Lester Hinrichsen, Douglas Hinrichsen, Sr., and great grandson Greyson Shubert.

Larry Lee Smith, 75, Atchison, died Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Atchison Senior Village after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

He was born August 28, 1941 at Horton, Kansas. He was the son of Junius and Viola E. (Schuetz) Smith. He attended St. Leo’s grade school in Horton, KS and was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, KS in 1959. Larry attended Kansas State University and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and graduated from Emporia State Teacher’s College with a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences in 1963 and a Master’s degree in Education in 1965.

He and Marjorie Ann Buttron, Lancaster, Kansas, were united in marriage on September 9, 1961 in Emporia, Kansas.

He began his teaching career in Chase County Community High School in Cottonwood Falls, KS, and later moved to Atchison where he taught at USD #409, Maur Hill Prep School and Bert Nash. Larry retired from Atchison High School in 1999 after 37 years of teaching.

Larry was a past member of the Atchison Jaycees, Atchison Elks, Knights of Columbus, Atchison Teacher’s Association, Pineview Country Club, and Bellevue Country Club. After retiring from education, Larry worked part-time at the Bellevue Country Club on the course management staff for 14 years and enjoyed playing golf.

Larry enjoyed playing all sports and was an assistant football coach at Atchison High School. He was an official for basketball, football and volleyball for several years. He loved playing softball and poker with the guys.

Larry is survived by his wife, Marjorie Smith, of 55 years. Three children: Lynnette (Scott) Kracht, Marysville, KS, Lori (Rick) Bobki, Spring Hill, KS, and Scott (Susan) Smith, De Soto, KS. Grandchildren: Bryan (Ashley) Kracht, Alyssa (Andrew) Feldkamp, Andy and Mat Edwards, Madison and McKenzie Kracht, and Cody and Kyleigh Bobki. Great grandchildren: Jaxon Feldkamp, Clara Kracht and Jayden Feldkamp. Brothers: Ivan (Barbara) Smith, Lenexa, KS, and Daryl (Nadine) Smith, Whiting, KS.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, and sister-in-law, Laura Smith.

Audrey Renae Ramirez, 27, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2017 at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born on May 8, 1989 in Hiawatha, Kansas the daughter of Sam and Ramona Greene Ramirez. Audrey graduated from Horton High School and earned her CNA and CMA and worked for several nursing homes in Brown County. She was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe.

Survivors include her father, Sam Ramirez of Horton, Kansas; two daughters, Lyllian Wheaton and Leslea Ramirez; sister, Madelyn Horn of Springfield, Oregon; three brothers, Ryan Green of Powhattan, Kansas, Jonathan Ramirez and Joseph "Joey" Ramirez both of Horton, Kansas She was preceded in death by her mother, Ramona Ramirez.

Marjorie A. Steinlage, 88, of Corning, Kansas died peacefully on Monday, January 16, 2017 at Eastridge Nursing Home in Centralia.

Marjorie was born on January 7, 1929 to Frank and Anna Meyer Burdiek, on a farm south of Seneca. She attended Kelly Grade school and graduated from Kelly High School in 1947.

Marjorie married Francis Steinlage on November 28, 1950 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. They lived northeast of Corning, where they farmed, raised livestock and operated a dairy. They moved into Corning in November of 1996. He preceded her in death on January 15, 2004.

Marjorie was a stay home mom, until her kids were all enrolled in school; and then she went to work for the school’s lunch program from 1970 to 1991.

Marjorie was an avid bingo player and card player; she sewed many comforters, loved to garden and can the fruits of her labor.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Corning and the Altar Society, and the Corning American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are her children; a son, Dale (Geri) of Corning; four daughters, Dorothy (Gary) Becker of Centralia, Janet (Tim) Hiltibrand of Corning, Donna (Allan) Haverkamp of Auburn and Joyce (Bill) Boeckman of Goff; a sister, Bernice Glover of Salina; and a brother, Edgar Burdiek of Topeka; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren, with one due in April.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Chari Steinlage on April 9, 1970, and Shirley Weinert on April 9, 1983; a sister, Imelda Skoch; and brothers, Nobert, Leonard, Francis, Regis and Wilbur.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday, January 19, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM  on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Memorials will be designated at a later date.

David E. Blunt, 71, of Hiawatha, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, January 15, 2017, shortly after arrival at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.  

David was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa, one of nine children born to Ray and Elizabeth O’Dell Blunt and had lived in the Northeast Kansas area nearly all of his life.  David graduated from Horton High School with the class of 1963 and had worked for Flair Fold for 20 years prior to working at the White Cloud Casino for 10 years.  In later years, David developed health problems:  went on kidney dialysis in 2008, kidney transplant in 2012, and just last June a mild heart attack.

He and Alice Lucas declared their love for each other April 1, 1971.  She survives.
Other survivors include children:  Travis (Cindy) Lucas, Ward Lucas, Patti (Dave) Brodman, Michael Blunt, Ricky Blunt, Terry Blunt; a sister Donna (Don) Harvey of Bern; and numerous grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers:  Philip, Charles, Lawrence, and three siblings in infancy.

Paul Christopher “Bud” Zacharias, 56 of Atchison, KS passed away Monday, January 16, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

Bud was born on November 11, 1960, in Atchison, KS, the son of Elzie and Ramona Rose (Foster) Zacharias, Jr.  He owned and operated his own salvage and metal scraping business.  Bud enjoyed shooting pool, fishing and was a proud member of the NRA. 

Bud married Jeannette Lewis on April 18, 1980.  She survives of the home.  Additional survivors include two sons; James C. Zacharias of the home, Michael W. Zacharias and fiancé Stephanie Pennington, of Atchison, KS, two sisters; Pauline Goodpasture and Charlene Aversman both of Atchison, KS, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Paul Leon Millenbruch, 83, of Hoyt, KS passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at his home. He was born December 29, 1933 in rural Mayetta, KS the son of George Edwin and Dorothy Edith (Starkey) Millenbruch.

Paul attended Carbon and Miller country schools.He had lived in Mayetta since 1971 and had moved to Hoyt in 2013. He was a carpenter for over 35 years, working for Local #1445.

Paul was a member of the First Christian Church in Holton since 1950 and a member of Carpenter’s Union Local #1445.

He married Karen Wolfe on December 29, 1967 in Hiawatha. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a sister, Carolyn Rice of Murphy, NC; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Ira “Corky” and Louis Millenbruch who passed on January 15, 2017.

Memorial Service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at the First Christian Church in Holton. Edwin Lee Dinger, 62, Valley Falls, died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.

He was born March 20, 1954, at St.George, the son of Chester and Pauline Williams Dinger.

Ed had worked at Humm Dingers Restaurant at Valley Falls, and at Woodhaven Inc. and Welchwood Products, both at Perry. He was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and and a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6671, both in Valley Falls. He was a District Deputy for the Knights of Columbus.

He married Tamera Abramovitz, Jan. 26, 1980, at Valley Falls. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Dinger, and two brothers, Austin and Marvin Dinger.

Survivors include his wife, Tamera, of the home; his son, Andy Dinger, Valley Falls; his daughter, Cassandra (Ben) Branstetter, Madison; his father, Chester Dinger, Manhattan; three sisters, Thelma (Delbert) New, Valley Falls; Marjorie Wickizer, Manhattan, Lorea Dinger, Ogden; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter .

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Friday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Visitation will follow.

Louis Edwin Millenbruch, 87, of Winfield, KS passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Winfield Senior Living. He was born January 6, 1930 on the Pottawatomi Indian Reservation near Mayetta, KS to George Edwin and Dorothy Edith (Starkey) Millenbruch.

Louis attended grade school in a one room country school and graduated from Holton High School in 1947. He attended a trade school for electronics in Kansas City.

 On September 1951 he was drafted into the United States Army. Most of the time was spent in a Mash Unit in Korea. In September 1953, he was honorably discharged.

 On September 2, 1955, Louis married Ada Jean McCauley at the First Christian Church in Holton. To this union was born a son, Louis “Buddy” Millenbruch, Jr.

 He worked for Midwest Construction Co., building bridges for the State of Kansas. After trade school, he repaired televisions at Jayhawk Music in Holton. Louis was hired by IBM in Topeka in 1956. From there he moved 24 times. He attended school in San Jose. Then he worked in St. Louis, San Francisco, Kansas City, St. Joseph, Topeka, Poughkeepsie, the space center in Houston and Colorado Springs where he retired after 34 years with IBM. He then moved to Winfield.

While living in St. Jose he was Scout Master for Troop 8. He took the troop to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico-twice. Louis’s hobbies include golf, wood working and traveling. He has been to forty-nine states, all but Alaska. While in Hong Kong, he went to Sydney and Singapore as an instructor. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

 He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Ira “Corky” Millenbruch and Paul Millenbruch who passed January 14, 2017.

 Survivors include his wife, Ada Millenbruch of the home; his son, Louis “Buddy” Millenbruch, Jr. (Vicky) of Imperial, MO; a sister, Carolyn Rice of Murphy, NC; a sister-in-law, Karen Millenbruch of Hoyt, KS; 2 grandsons, Jason Millenbruch (Laura) of Katy, TX and Jeff Millenbruch (Lindsay) of Stewartville, MO; 4 great-grandchildren, Colby, Molly, Hudson and Beau and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Helen Lavern Barnes, 94, of Vermillion, KS, died Tuesday, January 10, at the Frankfort Community Care Home in Frankfort. She was born October 31, 1922 in Lincoln Township in Marshall County, to Reuben and Ellen (Swanson) Matson. She attended Marysville schools.

On December 26, 1939, she was united in marriage to August Barnes in St. Joseph, MO. He preceded her in death on September 30, 2000.

Helen was a life-long resident of the Vermillion area. She was a homemaker and enjoyed flowers, gardening and sewing. She helped August with bookkeeping for August’s construction company and held various other jobs. Helen volunteered with the churches and community of Vermillion.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan (Darwin) Skillett, of Centralia KS, and Joyce Gudenkauf, of Vliets, KS; seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, August; brother, Vernon Matson; two grandsons, Richard Gudenkauf and Doug Skillett; and a son-in-law, Kale Gudenkauf.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, at the Vermillion Methodist Church. Rev. Virgil Warren will officiate.

Burial will follow at the Vermillion Cemetery.

Jacquelyn Lee Dalinghaus Kroemer, 51, of Seneca died on January 11, 2017 at her home.

Jackie was born on December 14, 1965 in Axtell to Larry and Betty Ann Koch Dalinghaus.

Jackie attended B&B School and graduated with the Class of 1984. After she graduated she went to work at Crestview Manor and Country View Estates in Seneca was a CNA. Jackie’s health deteriorated and the physical demand of her profession took their tole and she “retired” at a young age. Jackie dedicated her attention to raising her children.

On January 2, 2004 Jackie married Dennis R. Kroemer at the Zion Lutheran Church in Pawnee City, Nebraska.

Jackie had many interests, but she relished baking and cooking.; she never turned down a good game of cards or a board game. She enjoyed connecting through Facebook and shopping at the farmer’s market. Jackie was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ north of Seneca.

Jackie was preceded in death by a brother, Jeffery A. Dalinghaus on December 24, 1997.

Survivors of Jackie are he husband of 15 years, Dennis; her mother, Betty Ann (Rick Weber) Dalinghaus of Seneca; her father, Larry Dalinghaus of Seneca; a daughter, Cortney (Kasey) Whitman of Lansing; a son, Brandon (Amanda) Dalinghaus of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska; a sister, Julie (Lynn) Kohake of Seneca; a brother, Jason (Lacy) Dalinghaus of Seneca; a step son, David (Melissia) Kroemer of Savana, Missouri; a step daughter, Donna (Fred) Edwards of Marysville; six grandchildren and several step grandchildren.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, January 17th from 6 – 8 P.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. A Funeral Service will be Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home. The burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Baileyville.

Leonard M. Thomas, JR, Nish KA Wah Suck, 65, of Horton, passed on Thursday, January 12, 2017.

He was born December 8, 1951, in Holton, the son of Leonard M. Thomas, Sr. and Orcelia J. Mason Thomas.    

JR was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe and followed the Drum way of life.  He worked in the Tribe's Farm and Ranch Program.

JR and Karen S. Harrison were married on December 16, 1972 in Topeka.  She survives, of the home.

JR was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Elwyn K. Miller and Loren J. Thomas.

Other survivors include a son, ThunderChild Thomas (Marisa Cole), Topeka; four daughters, Coleen Thomas (Andrew Pahmahmie), Jolene Thomas, Jayme Mitchell (Edward J., Jr.) and Adele Wahwassuck (Raphael), all of Mayetta; two brothers, Fred Thomas (Larene) and Moe Thomas (Cindy), both of Horton; and numerous grandchildren, nephews and nieces.  JR was also an adopted father to the Wewenes family and Shayla Whitebird, and an adopted brother to Rose Allen.

Cecil Ray “Wab-no-sah” Mzhickteno, 57, of Mayetta, KS passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. He was born August 5, 1959 in Topeka, KS the son of Marvin D. Mzhickteno and Norma (Mattwaoshe) Mzhickteno.

Cecil graduated from Topeka West High School in 1977. He had worked in construction, along-side his father. Cecil had also worked for Hanover Pancake in Topeka as a “bus boy” and later as a cook. Most recently he worked for Hawkins Optical as a lens crafter. Cecil was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

Survivors include his mother, Norma Mzhickteno of Mayetta, KS; a brother, Alan Mzhickteno of Mayetta, KS; 2 sister-in-laws, Anna Mzhickteno of Topeka, KS and Ella Mzhickteno of Mayetta, KS; 5 nieces and 5 nephews.

Cecil was preceded in death by his father, Marvin D. Mzhickteno; 2 brothers, Duane and Kevin Mzhickteno; an aunt, Laura Evans and 2 uncles, Larry Shopteese and T.J. Seymour.

LeRoy B Tangeman, 76, of Seneca, died Wednesday morning, January 11, 2017 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

LeRoy was born on June 3, 1940 to Frank and Agnes Wessel Tangeman, in Axtell, Kansas. LeRoy attended St. Mary’s School in St. Benedict, Kansas.

As a young man, LeRoy helped on the family farm, until he was old enough to join the Kansas National Guard. While serving his country, he continued to farm the family farm, with his brothers, Cyril, Emmett, and Francis. He enjoyed farming with his brothers, until 1978 when his sons were old enough to start Tangeman Farms. In 1965 LeRoy started to sell for Asgrow Seed Company. LeRoy enjoyed bowling, hunting, and farming with his sons. LeRoy farmed until he physically could no longer, his health declined and in 2012 he went to live at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

On September 11, 1965 LeRoy married Sharon K. Caffrey at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lillis. When they got married they made their home northeast of Seneca, where Sharon has remained.

LeRoy was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St Benedict, St. Joseph Society and the Seneca Knights of Columbus Council 1769. He also served on St. Mary’s Parish Council and on the advisory board to the Asgrow Seed Company.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his son, Kevin on March 2, 1977; parents, Frank on May 11, 1988 and Agnes on November 7, 1974; three brothers, Cletus Tangeman on January 10, 1977, Francis Tangeman on October 27, 1987, and Cyril Tangeman on August 11, 2016; and a sister, Alice Wehner on January 16, 2015.

LeRoy is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon, five sons and three daughters, Patrick (Rita) Tangeman of Bern, Brian Tangeman of Seneca, Marlene Sims of San Antonio, Texas,  Debbie (Matthew) Tangeman of Seneca, Michelle (Ain) Garcia of Hutchison, Rodney (Melissa) Tangeman of Bern, Cliff (Debi) Tangeman of Omaha, Nebraska, Travis Tangeman of Seneca; one brother and three sisters, Emmett (Mary Jo) Tangeman of Falls City, Nebraska, Esther McMahon of Beattie, Rita (Charles) Broxterman of Frankfort, and Eileen (Don) Lake of Topeka; six grandsons; five granddaughters; one great-grandson;  and two great-granddaughters

Bernard “Pete” J. Walter Sr., 94, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Sunday, January 8, 2017 at his home. 

Bernard was born on October 23, 1922 in St. Joseph, Missouri a child of Switzerland immigrants Herman & Anna (Rutschman) Walter. 

He graduated from Todd High School & worked his life as a farmer. Bernard was a member of the First Baptist Church & the Maranatha Class of Wathena. He served on the Soil Conservation Board for 27 years & the REA Board for several years. 

Bernard married Elaine Louise Zeltwanger on June 27, 1942 in Plattsburg, Missouri. She survives of the home. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Robert, Lawrence & Frederick Walter.

Margaret C. Schuetz, 100, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas.

She was born on May 29, 1916 in Downs, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Anna Kurtenbach Schuetz.

Margaret was a beautician and owned and operated Mar-Don's for over 16 years. She was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church, Altar Society where she served as past president and vice president. She was also a member of the Horton Hospital Auxiliary where she served and past president, Hiawatha Elks, Horton Senior Citizens and delivered meals on wheels. She enjoyed going dancing with Donald every Saturday night and camping.

On August 21, 1935 she married Donald G. Schuetz at St. Peter's in Mercier, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1985.

Survivors include three daughters, Donna (Jim) Bottom of Horton, Kansas, Cheryl (Pat) McAfee of Horton, Kansas and Mary (Bill) Becker of Denton, Kansas; four sons, Leslie "Pete" (Nora) Schuetz of Hoyt, Kansas, Dale (Carol) Schuetz of Powhattan, Kansas, Rick (Peggy) Schuetz of Hoyt, Kansas, Randy (Carrie) Schuetz of Holton, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Sharon Schuetz of Topeka, Kansas; 30 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, son, Bernard Schuetz, four brothers, Earl, Elmer, Dutch and Norman, two sisters, Elsie Mueller and Helen Schuetz, and two grandchildren, Brandon Schuetz and Erin Schuetz.

Lale “Stevie” Hall, 67, of Falls City, NE passed away January 9, 2017. He was born November 11, 1949 to Jesse Hall and the late Barbara (Lundsford) Hall.

Lale was drafted into the U.S. Marines on March 26, 1969.

Lale married Charlene Newland in 1971 and they were later divorced, he then married Cindy Jackson on June 19th, 1993 at Falls City, NE.

Lale was raised in Falls City and attended Falls City High School until later receiving his GED. Following that he was drafted into the U.S. Marines. After the Marines he moved back to the Falls City area where he worked various jobs until becoming employed by Wenger Manufacturing. He worked there for around 15 years until he became disabled.  After marrying Cindy the couple established their home near Dawson until later moving to Falls City for the last nine years.

Lale is survived by wife, Cindy Hall of Falls City, sons, Adrian Hall of Kansas City, MO; Bart Kling and his wife Lori of Ponca City, OK; daughters, Natasha Radley and her husband Jeremy of Falls City; Hally Hall of Falls City; father; Jesse Hall of Quenemo, KS; brother, David Hall of Falls City; sisters, LaDonna Moore of Topeka, KS; Jesse Ranea Spicer of Hiawatha, KS; grandchildren, Anastasia Finner, Madison Radley, Kate Hall, Brittney Radley, Nathanuel Radley, Andon Kling, and Harmony Hall. He is preceded in death by his mother, four brothers and four sisters.

Ret. U.S. Army Col. James Richard Perkins, 86, Atchison, Kansas died unexpectedly January 5, 2017 at his residence.

James was born June 8, 1930 in Van Buren, Missouri the son of James Moses and Anna Myrek Perkins. He attended schools in Van Buren, Missouri; St. Louis, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisianna.

James served in the United States Army from 1966 until his retirement in 1986 with the rank of Colonel. He served as Chaplain for thirty years most recently at Ft. Leavenworth from 1983 until 1986.

Mr. Perkins relocated to Atchison, Kansas in November of 2016 from Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was a member of Lake Hamilton Baptist Church in Hot Springs and attended Riverbend Bible Church since moving to Atchison.

Survivors include three sons, James R. (Karen) Perkins, Jr., Florissant, MO; Pete K. Perkins, North Little Rock, ARK; John A. (Lindsay) Perkins, St. Louis, MO; two step-sons, Andrae (Michelle) Bopp, Walla Walla, WA; Anthony (Janet) Bopp, Booneville, MO; six grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Dorothy M. Schmitz, 87, Centralia, died Monday, January 9, 2017 at Crestview Nursing and Residential Living in Seneca.

She was born April 11, 1929, on a farm southeast of Baileyville, the daughter of Albert and Hilda Osterhaus. Dorothy attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Baileyville High School in 1947. She was employed by Leo Schmidt Cabins in Baileyville.

On May 23, 1951, she married Adrian A. Schmitz at Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville. They farmed several farms from 1951 to 1955 until they moved to their present farm southeast of Centralia. Besides farming and livestock, they had a dairy operation. Dorothy also raised chickens, had a large garden, and did a lot of canning.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church where she served as president of the church council for a year, the Altar Society here she also served as president. Besides raising her family, she enjoyed sewing for them, quilting, embroidery, and doing crafts.

Survivors are hernfive sons, Leo of Antonito, CO, Melvin (Cheryl) of Olathe, Sylvester of Centralia, Benedict (Stephanie) of Topeka, and George of Hoyt; four daughters, Eloise (Mac) Kearns of Salina, Lucy (Clint) Dickers of Warrensburg, MO, Alice (Dave) McPhail of Chapman, Ann (Kevin) Deters of Seneca; a brother, Marvin Mathewson of, Baileyville; a sister Ileta Klecan of Hanover; and 20 grandchildren 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Adrian on February 21, 2006, a 15-month-old son, Cletus, March 12, 1957, a daughter-in-law Maria Schmitz, a brother, Raymond Mathewson of Baileyville and a sister, Irene Schmitz

Denise Sailors, 65, of Falls City, NE, passed away January 7, 2017 at Falls City. She was born June 9, 1951 at Council Bluffs, IA to the late Sherrold and Anne (Jacobsen) Blaney.

On December 8, 2007 she married Chuck Sailors at Nebraska City, NE. The couple made their home in Nebraska City until moving recently to Falls City.

Denise was raised in Council Bluffs and graduated Thomas Jefferson High School in 1969. After graduation she worked at Tip-Top at Omaha and then enrolled at Iowa Western and graduated with an associate’s degree in business. She started working at Corn Belt Automotive and then became employed at Automotive Warehouse Distributors Incorporated. She worked there for forty years in various capacities until retiring in June 2016 as the Chief Financial Officer due to her health. She had served on the Board of Directors of the Automotive Parts and Service Association.

Denise is survived by her husband, Chuck of Falls City, step-children, Ali Glathar and her husband Kris of Falls City, Mitch Sailors and his wife Julie of Kansas City, MO, sister, Janet Marley of Council Bluffs, brothers, Brian Blaney of Omaha, Mark Blaney and his wife Shirley of Council Bluffs, four grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Norma Messersmith and a sister-in-law, Bev (Mrs. Brian) Blaney.

The body of Mrs. Sailors has been cremated and services are currently pending.

Edwin Joseph Fouraker of Tucson, Arizona, passed away on December 7, 2016.  He was born on March 7, 1942 to Mary Evelyn Fouraker (Frederick) and Harry Edwin Fouraker.  He grew up in Salem, Nebraska, graduating from Salem High School in 1960.  Upon graduating, he joined the Navy and served eight years.  Prior to his retirement, he was most recently employed by Raytheon in Tucson. 

He is preceded in death by wife Virginia Crane Fouraker (Kentopp), father, Harry, brother, Gerald, and three sisters: Sonjia Kunze (Calvin), Pauline Fouraker, and Patricia Fouraker.  He is survived by sons William Fouraker and Kenneth Crane, daughter Gail Parker (John), five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, mother, Mary,  brothers John, Patrick, sisters Kathryn Johnson (Butch), Helen Fouraker, Regina Farrell (David), and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Richard was born on August 5, 1930 in St. Joseph, Missouri, the only child of Francis and Florence (Inbody) Siskey. His parents divorced and his mother later married Bill Orler and they moved to West Mineral, Kansas. He graduated from Mineral Rural High School in 1948 and began teaching in a one room school south of Columbia, Kansas.

In May of 1952, he entered the United States Army and was stationed in West Berlin. After his discharge, he returned to Kansas State Teachers College (Pittsburg State) and completed work on his Bachelor’s Degree.

He and Verbena Omeck of Cherokee, Kansas were united in marriage on August 13, 1955 in West Mineral, Kansas. They moved to Atchison where he was employed by the USD 409 at Washington Elementary, Martin West Elementary and both Atchison Junior and Senior High Schools for thirty-seven years until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Benedict Parish in Atchison, participating at Sacred Heart Church where he served as a lector for over forty years. He was also a member of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post #6 of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus Council #723, National Education Association, Encore Players at Theatre Atchison and Friends of the Atchison Library. He was named “Mr. Atchison” during the celebration of the Atchison Sesquicentennial. He served as a volunteer at the Atchison Visitor Center and the Sacred Heart Variety Store. He and his wife enjoyed many years of traveling in both the United States as well as numerous foreign countries, especially Alaska.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Verbena Siskey, Atchison, KS, three children, Tina (Steven) Pahls, Kansas City, MO, Tim (Diane) Siskey, Kansas City, MO, Mary Liggett, Atchison, KS, one sister, Rosemary Morrison, Pittsburg, KS, seven grandchildren and two great grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Pete and Michael Orler, and a son-in-law, Loren Liggett.

Merle Edward Marti, 99, of Sabetha, KS passed away Sunday morning, January 8, 2017 at the Apostolic Christian Home.

Merle was born July 25, 1917 near Bern, KS to Louie and Martha (Sommer) Marti. He lived most of his life in the Bern area, working for the Nemaha County ASCS office for many years.  In 2005, he moved into an apartment in Sabetha, and in June of 2016 into the Apostolic Christian Home.

Merle enjoyed being outdoors, and spent many hours hunting, fishing, and gardening. He also enjoyed visits from family and friends, leaving them with many fond memories.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Corrina; a brother, Harry Marti; a brother-in-law, Raymond Braker; and two nephews, Paul and Dan Braker.

He is survived by a sister, Lu Etta Braker of Pittsburg, KS, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Lloyd Vrtiska, 90, formerly of Table Rock, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska.

Richard Estell Boydston, 59, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on May 17, 1957 in Humboldt, Nebraska to Estell and Rosetta (Stalder) Boydston.  He was raised in Humboldt where he attended grade school and later graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1975.  After graduation, Richard attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln and graduated with a degree in Automotive Technology in May of 1978.

In the fall of 1975, Richard was united in marriage to Lynn Hunzeker in Humboldt, Nebraska.  To this union a son, Eric Jacob, was born.  They moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where Richard worked at Markley Motors as an ASE Certified Mastertech Mechanic.  The couple would later divorce in July of 1991.  On April 21, 1995, Richard was united in marriage to Jeannine Marie Loomis.  Richard loved Jeeping, boating, quading, family get togethers, and spending time with his kids, sisters, and mother.  He had a big heart and was a great friend because he cared about everyone and was willing to help anybody he could.     

Richard passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the Bryan LGH Medical Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska having reached the age of fifty-nine years, seven months, and five days.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Sharon Moyer, and a niece Dona DeJonge. 

He is survived by his loving wife Jeannine Boydston of Humboldt, NE; son Eric Jacob Boydston and his girlfriend Danielle Riffe of Wellington, CO; step-sons: William Lynn Petty and his wife Allyson of Colorado Springs, CO; Joshua Wayne Petty of Sabetha, KS; special son Chad Lowe of Humboldt, NE; granddaughter Kaitlynn Marie Boydston of Wellington, CO; step-grandson Chris Riffe of Wellington, CO; sisters: Donna Sue Boston and her husband Mike of Lincoln, NE; Eileen Row and her husband Mark of Lincoln, NE; a brother Charlie Boydston and his wife Donna Jean of DuBois, NE; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Patricia Faye Wichman, 94, of Holton, KS passed away Friday, January 6, 2017 at Holton Community Hospital. She was born March 9, 1922 at Swede Creek Township in Riley County, KS. Patricia was the daughter of Malcom and Ethel (Bolejack) Pickett.
 
Patricia had lived in the Holton community since 1957 and previously in the Clay Center area. She was a homemaker and also owned and operated Ernie’s Second Hand Store in Holton with her husband for 15 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Holton.

 Patricia married Ernest F. Wichman on July 16, 1942 in Belleville, KS. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Dale Wichman on October 4, 2016; 2 grandchildren, Mary Patricia Wichman on December 14, 1966 and Gregory Allen Wichman on August 12, 1974; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Survivors include 3 sons, Verlin Wichman (Sue) of Holton, KS, Allen Wichman of Topeka, KS and Kevin Wichman (Sandy) of Circleville, KS; 2 daughters, Carol Searles (Rob Rolin) of Denison, KS and Amy Spiker (Jared) of Circleville, KS; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Wichman of Holton, KS; a sister, Lavon Strawhacker of Kingman, KS; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Ret U.S. Air Force Lt. Col Leon A. Torkelson, CFP, 73, of Atchison County passed away unexpectedly Thursday, January 5, 2017 at  St Francis Hospital in Topeka.   

He was born on August 17, 1943 to S. Albert and Ella C. (Tobiason) Torkelson in Horton, KS.  He married Glenda C. Sims on August 25, 1963 in Kansas City, KS.   

Leon grew up in rural Everest, KS and after graduating from ACCHS, he attended Kansas State Teachers College where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.   He graduated from the Univ of Kansas with a Bachelors and Masters in Accounting and was headed to law school at the Univ of Florida when Uncle Sam came calling.   In the Air Force as a fighter pilot, he flew the F-4, F-5, and F-16, served in Vietnam, and was stationed all over the world, including five years in Germany.  In 1987, after over 20 years of service, he retired and moved back to the family farm.  He then worked with MetLife Ins Co as a Certified Financial Planner serving businesses and families throughout the mid-west up until his death. Leon enjoyed flying his 1942 Interstate Cadet WWII Trainer airplane in his off time.  He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Everest Lions Club, Everest Historical Society, and numerous professional organizations.  Leon enjoyed traveling with his wife Glenda, taking many cruises all over the world.  They loved spending time with their family, especially in Winter Park, CO and Table Rock, MO.  Less than a week before he passed, he spent the holidays with his family in the Caribbean on a Disney Cruise.   

Leon is survived by Glenda, his wife of over 53 years, son Kurt Torkelson and wife Amy of Basehor, KS, daughter Kari Anderson and husband Brian of Leavenworth, and five grandchildren, Aubrey, Chase, and Brody Torkelson and Jonas and Anya Anderson.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Eileen Herbert.   

A visitation will be held Monday, January 8, 2017 at the Zion Lutheran Church (1521 Prairie Rd  Everest, KS) from 4-8pm.  A service will be held at 10am Tuesday at the church.  Burial with military honors will follow at the church cemetery.

Darrell Eugene Thomas, 76 of Liberty, Nebraska passed away at home on Thursday, January 5, 2016.  He was born on June 17, 1940 to Franklin and Leila (Specht) Thomas.  Darrell was the youngest of four brothers.  

Darrell attended Pawnee County Schools and Pawnee City High School, graduating with a correspondence  course.

Darrell was employed as real estate appraiser. His first short marriage  ended in divorce to this union one daughter Holly was born.  He worked with his brother Ronald in soil conservation work.

On September 17, 1961 he married Betty Bock, to this union a son Ricky Lee and a daughter Kimberly Ann were born.  

He then returned to Real Estate appraisal. When the children reached school age in Superior, Nebraska he changed jobs to hauling petroleum.  The family moved back to Pawnee City in 1976. They moved to Liberty, Nebraska in 1979 where he resided until his death.

Darrell was preceded in death by his father, stepfather, mother, brothers, LeRoy, Byford, Ronald.

Darrell leaves to morn wife Betty, son Rick and wife Patty Thomas, daughter, Kim and husband David Pickerel, grandchildren, Daniel and Kayla Pfingsten, Dillon Pfingsten, Garrett Pfingsten, Jeremy Thomas, Brittany Thomas, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Marie I. Maderos, 83, of Hiawatha, died unexpectedly Monday, January 2, 2017, at Vintage Park Assisted Living Apartments in Hiawatha.

Marie was born August 25, 1933, at Richmond, California, the only child Frank and Rita Caviggia Maderos. She grew up in the Richmond/San Jose area, where she attended school and was graduated from high school. Marie’s life work was volunteering and helping people, whether it was at in California, Williston, North Dakota, in Florida, or Hiawatha. She was a quiet, gentle, very generous person who was a pleasure to be around. She was the type of person who enjoyed giving and doing behind the scenes. Marie never had a bad word to say about anyone. Marie moved to Hiawatha a few years ago to be near good friends.

She was a very devout in her catholic faith, very faithful to her Churches in Williston, Florida, and at Hiawatha.

She was loved and will be missed by all her friends.

It was Marie’s wish to be cremated. A Memorial Mass in Marie’s memory will be held at a later date.

Wayne A. Neff, 95, of Sabetha, Kansas died Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.

He was born in Bern, Kansas on April 8, 1921 the son of Roy A. Neff and Mae (Walck) Neff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Millie Neff; a daughter, Laine Tangeman.

He is survived by two daughters, Lynne Mulroy and her husband, Richard and Layna Lackey and her husband, Richard; one brother, Clinton Neff; a sister, Edie Nelson and seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca.

Shirley Mae Campbell was born on April 23, 1950 to the late Gilbert Campbell and Sophia (Burton) Campbell.

Shirley attended Washington Elementary, Atchison Junior High and Atchison Senior High, in Atchison, KS. Additionally she completed her Medical Transcript Certification at Northeast Kansas Technical Vocational School in Atchison, KS.

Shirley spent the majority of her working career serving in many roles at the Unified School District 409 Board of Education, Guidance Center, and Quality Care Group Home. She was an active involved mother to her children, and perhaps even over involved, with her grandchildren. Shirley enjoyed cooking, attending basketball, football, and volleyball games, choir and band concerts, school plays, playing in family card games, and all things related to Second Christian Church.

Shirley was a loved and active member in her community. She was a faithful and active lifetime member of the Second Christian Church holding multiple positions within the church including CWF, Member of the Board, Choir Director, Secretary, Member of the Usher Board, Kitchen and Finance Committee Member, and Church Treasurer. Shirley loved the power of music and sang in the Church Choir and the singing group Jesus Children.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Sophia Campbell; Three brothers, Clifford (Tip) G. Campbell, Phil S. Campbell and Clarence L. Campbell; Two sisters, Gracie Campbell and Sophia E. Boldridge; One son, Tyson Kyle Downing.

Shirley is survived by her six children. Van N. Hurst, 92, of Atchison, KS died on Jan. 3, 2017 at his home in Atchison.

Van was born on May 16th, 1924 in Rushville, MO the son on Clifton and Agnes (VanHoozer) Hurst. He attended grade school in Rushville, MO and graduated from Rushville High School in 1942. Van served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946, sixteen months during that time in Europe. After returning home he attended St. Joseph Junior College, graduated from University of Nebraska with a B.S. in Education in 1950 and earned his Master’s in Education in 1953. Van taught his first year at Rushville High School in 1950, from 1953-1954 at DeKalb High School, and from 1954-1987 he taught and later was the Elementary, then Atchison Junior High School, and Atchison Senior High School Principle for USD 409. He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Atchison Lions Club, the American Legion Post #6, and VFW Post #1175, the Salvation Army Board, the Retired Teachers Association and past member of the YMCA Board. He enjoyed fishing, living at Sugar Lake, playing and coaching sports, watching college sports and especially his grandchildren.

Van was married to Jeri Fuller on June 5, 1948 in St. Joseph MO. She preceded him in death on Oct. 31, 1993. He was later married to Vera Ellerman Rodecap on Sept. 3, 1994 in Nortonville, KS. She preceded him in death on June 15, 2013. Survivors include a son, Corky Hurst, Atchison, KS, three daughters, Paula Hurst, Golden, CO, Jeri Ann Baker and Ellen Mitchell, both of Salina, KS, a step-son, Roger H. “Rocky” Rodecap, Cummings, KS , two step daughters, Jerri Anne (Tim) Freed, and family, Topeka, KS, Lisa Lyn (Dave) Hill, and family Tyler, Tx and six grandchildren, Libby (Chuck) Teafatiller, Shane (Meagan) Long, Austin Baker, Mariah Baker, Dakota Baker, and Allison (Andrew) Johns and step-grandchildren, Jaclyn (Zac) West, Christen (Matt) Lacy, Presley Rodecap, Kendra Rodecap, and Katie (Carey) Clover, Great grandchildren, Zachary & Dylan Teafatiller , Sage & Micah Long, Landon & Aidan Johns, step great grandchildren, Reagan & Rylee West, Mya & Will Lacy, Hudson & Caroline Clover. His parents, both wife’s – Jeri and Vera, and a brother, Allison Hurst preceded him in death.

Linda K. Fouraker, 68, of Salem, NE, passed away January 4, 2017 at Falls City, NE. She was born July 13, 1948 at Falls City to the late Dale and Mary (York) Hitchcock.

On May 28, 2010 she married Butch Fouraker at Falls City.

Linda was raised at Falls City and attended Falls City Public Schools. She worked for Campbell Soup at Tecumseh, NE for 28years and then for C.J. Foods at Bern, KS and then took employment at Crosswinds Industry & Sabetha, KS where she retired in 2010.

Linda is survived by her husband, Butch of Salem, daughters, Shannon Roberts of Salem, Kelly Edison of Mazeville, MO, son, Shawn Fouraker and his wife Tiffany of Falls City, sister, Judy Stewart and her husband Donny of Falls City, 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial dinner will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 from Noon until 2:00 PM at Salem Community Building. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Thamar Alma Masquat, 96, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at the Horton Community Hospital.

She was born on April 21, 1920 in Rulo, Nebraska the daughter of Frank and Emma Lynn DuPuis.

Thamar attended Green Valley country school and graduated from Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas. She married Theodore Masquat in Miami, Oklahoma. Thamar worked for Sunflower Ammunition depot, was a seamstress for the Horton Garment Factory for 18 years, she then went to work as a head cook for the United Tribes of Northeast Kansas and Southeast Nebraska WICK Program and then worked for Golden Eagle Casino in the Player's Club until she retired. She was the oldest enrolled member of the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas, lifetime member of the Kickapoo American Legion Post #415 Auxiliary and served on the Kickapoo Senior Citizens Board.

Survivors include, a son Robert (Bobbi) Nanomantube of Horton, Kansas; brother, Dale DuPuis of Topeka, Kansas; three grandchildren, Dylan Nanomantube of Horton, Kansas, Devyn Nanomantube of Horton, Kansas and Daleen Miller of Topeka, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ted on March 11, 1979, daughter, Carol Jean Anske, three sisters, Bernice Ogden, Geraldine Schuetz and Loretta walker, three brothers, Lewis "Bo" DuPuis, Vernon DuPuis and Darvin DuPuis.

Arliss Sue (Holland) Dick, 73, of Axtell, KS passed away at her home on January 1, 2017.

Sue was born on July 2, 1943 at her parent’s home in Vermillion, KS to John and Jean (Law) Holland. She attended school in Vermillion and graduated in 1961.

She was united in marriage to Duane Dick in 1963 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Axtell. They celebrated 52 years of marriage prior to Duane’s death on May of 2015.

In 1976, Sue & Duane purchased a Standard Petroleum Jobbership in Seneca, and later sold the business in 1982. She then purchased the Friendly Diner that she ran until her retirement in 2005. After retiring, Sue and Duane opened The Quilt Basket Quilt Shop that they ran until 2015.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane; a grand-daughter, Alyssa Davis; a great-grandson, Mox Steele; and her sister, Marilyn (Tuffy) Miller-Durland.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy (Kenny) Alderfer of Sabetha, KS, and Cathy (Terry) Slifer of Lawrence, KS; four grand-daughters, Jessica (Chance) Steele, Ashley Maley, Mickhail Farmer and Tyanna Alderfer; three great-grandchildren, Craetyn Farmer, Kendrick Maley and Rhylee Farmer; her sister, Kay Hulsing; and her brother, J.B. Holland.

William H. Oltjen, 86, of Overland Park, formerly of the Robison area, died January 1, 2017.

He was born July 1, 1930, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Henry and Florence (Dock) Oltjen who preceded him in death.  He grew up in Brown County, Kansas, and graduated from Robinson High School in 1948.  

He married Wilma Ruhnke of Bendena, Kansas, October 14, 1951, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bendena, Kansas.  He was a proud father of three children, and had five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He farmed with his father south of Robinson until 1981.  They had many cattle and hogs, and raised mainly corn, soybeans and wheat.   He was on the local Coop's Board of Directors for six years and President for two years.  He was also the treasurer of the local school board for six years. He had many friends in the community and at Upper Wolf Lutheran Church which he attended regularly.  In 1982 he and Wilma moved to Overland Park where he worked for Jay Wolfe for 22 years. He liked being with and helping people.  His hobbies were fishing with his family and enjoying a family vacation to Minnesota or Ontario, Canada.

He is survived by his wife Wilma of Overland Park, his son James and his wife Sharon and grandson Cory from Winters, California; a daughter Rita Eckman and her husband Tony from Anthem, Arizona, and granddaughter Kristen Pyle and husband Brandt and great-granddaughter Savannah, and granddaughter Susan Eckman from New York; and a son Thomas from Overland Park and grandson Graham from Houston, Texas, and granddaughter Sydney Logan and husband Wayne from Leavenworth.

 Friends may call from 6-8:00pm Tuesday January 3, 2017 at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf.  Funeral services will be 2:00pm Wednesday at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf.

Delores E. Fletcher, 71, of Hiawatha, died early Monday, January 2, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family.

Delores was born April 20, 1945, at St. Paul, Nebraska, one of eleven children of John and Rose Robak Koperski. She attended Kelso country school near her home at Farwell, Nebraska, where she grew up. DeLores later attended St. Anthony’s Catholic Grade School where she received her first communion and was confirmed. She graduated from Farwell High School in 1963 prior to graduating from the Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, Minnesota. DeLores worked at the Hiawatha Community Hospital for 34 years as the Medical and X-Ray Technologist before retiring.

She was a devoted, long time member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha, where she was active in the Altar Society. Through the Altar Society, DeLores volunteered for many years taking communion to the shut-ins. DeLores loved to bake, and for many years, with the help of her husband, they made rolls for Coffee and Rolls Sunday at Church. She enjoyed making pies and cakes for her friends. Her main interest was her grandchildren, always attending as many of their activities as possible. She enjoyed helping her grandson with his 4-H projects; also loved gardening and growing lilies. DeLores had been a very active member for many years of the Falls City, Nebraska Saddle Club.

Delores married Daniel Grimes April 20, 1968. He died in 1989. On July 27, 1996, she married Maurice G. Fletcher at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha. He survives of the home.

Survivors include a daughter Tamala (Todd) Simmons of St. Joseph, Missouri; a son Todd (JoLynn) Grimes of Sabetha, KS; grandchildren: Trevor Simmons, Cole and Mya Grimes, Step-daughter Stacey (Richard) Beyer of Liberty, Missouri; step-grandchildren: Brandon, Katy and David Beyer. Also surviving are sisters Agnes (Ron) Lewandowski of Grand Island, Nebraska, JoAnn (Justin) Kuszak of Ashton, Nebraska, Marie (Daryl) Platek, Sally (Tom) Mudloff, all of St. Paul, Nebraska; brothers: Pete Koperski (friend Dolores Mc Donnell) of Tracey, Missouri, Henry (Rose) Koperski of St. Paul, Nebraska, John (Jan) Koperski of Ogallala, Nebraska, Ted (Margaret) Koperski of Lincoln, Nebraska, Ben (Mary) Koperski of Cody, Wyoming, with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a step-son Maurice Fletcher, Jr.; a step-grandson Wade Fletcher; a sister Frances Kush; nephews Jerrid Mudloff and Eric Koperski; 5 half brothers, and a half sister.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha, at 12 Noon Thursday, January 5, with Father Matt Koperski and Father Dan Gardner as con celebrants. Interment will follow at the Hiawatha Cemetery.

James A. Ramsey, age 84 of Dawson, passed away Sunday, January 01, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn.

Survivors include his wife Karen of Dawson; children Ann Ramsey of Tecumseh; Bert Ramsey of Auburn; Dollie and husband Terry Dettmann of Arnold, MO; step-children Denise and husband John Arington of Beatrice; John and wife Mary Sue Martin of Falls City; Laura Pagnano of Verdon; Lance Martin and special friend Michelle of Dawson; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchidlren; sister Mary Reschke of Lawrence, KS; brothers Wyatt Ramsey of Bellevue; John and wife Karen Ramsey of Dawson; sister-in-law Barb Ramsey of Dawson; other relatives and friends.

A memorial mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 4, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dawson. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery near Auburn. Rosary will be recited at the church in Dawson Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., with visitation to follow.

Lloyd Lavelle Wilson, 84, Cummings, KS, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016.

Family visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, Tuesday, January 3, 2017, followed by a 3:00 pm Memorial Service at the Cummings Christian Church, Cummings, KS.  Memorial contributions are suggested to Humane Society of Atchison.  Words of sympathy and condolences may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Lloyd was born July 5, 1932 in Atchison, KS, the first born son of Charles Everett and Madeline Zeta (Barber) Wilson.  Lloyd graduated from Atchison High School and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War.  Lloyd married high school sweetheart, JoAnn (Dolly) Jones on December 24, 1953 in Rushville, MO, spending the next 63 years of life traveling the globe as a result of his fulfilling mechanical engineering career in aeronautics.   45 years later, they returned home to Kansas, settling in Cummings, near many beloved relatives.  

Survivors include his wife: JoAnn, of the home; two daughters, Llory Wilson (Philip Morley), Port Townsend, WA and Joni Rene (Rocky) Johnson, Cypress, TX; four brothers, Darrel (Rosalie) Wilson, Creston, IA, Gary (Mary Lou) Wilson, Cummings, Charles (Barbara) Wilson and Harold (Elva) Wilson, both of Atchison, KS; four grandchildren; Jacob (Danielle) Johnson, Jenna Johnson, Dashiel Morley and Tuula Morley.  Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents and youngest sibling, Zeta Gordon.
