Wanola D. Buss, 93, of Holton, KS, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Medicalodges of Jackson County in Holton, KS.

She was born August 28, 1925 south of Circleville, KS, the daughter of Floyd Walter and Ella Marie (Stephenson) Slimmer. She was a lifetime resident of Jackson County and the Holton area, attending Pleasant Hill Grade School and graduating from Circleville High School in 1943. Wanola attended Washburn University in 1944 and received her teaching certificate. She taught 2 years at the following rural schools, Winding Vale and Rockbrook.

She married Dale L. Buss on January 20, 1946 and to this union they shared two sons, Stanley and Larry Buss. They were married for 56 years until Dale passed away on December 10, 2002.

Wanola began working at the Slimaker Dress Factory in Holton in 1953 and went to work at the Denison State Bank in 1965, working full-time and part-time for 35 years as a teller, assistant cashier, and administrative officer. Wanola also belonged to the Holton Hospital Auxiliary.

She was highly involved in the life of the church, whether it was at Granada Church of the Brethren, Larkinburg Christian, Holton Christian Church or Evangel UMC. She was a member of the King’s Daughters Sunday School Class, the Faith Faust Circle of United Methodist Women and past treasurer of Evangel United Methodist Church and sang in the choir.

Wanola will be remembered for being active in nursing home ministry, baking chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter balls and apple pie, and being a neighbor.

Survivors include her sons; Stanley and & wife Missie Buss of Louisburg, KS, Larry & wife Jeannie of Holton, KS; sister, June Jepson of Soldier, KS; brothers, Bill & wife Shirley Slimmer of Topeka, KS, Gary & Barbara Slimmer of Topeka, KS; grandchildren, Bryn (Corey) Stout, Jeremy (Kelly) Buss, Joshua (Hayley) Buss, David (Wendi) Buss, Tim (Megan) Buss; 14 great-grandchildren.

Wanola was preceded in death by her husband Dale and granddaughter Andrea Buss in 1982.

Vicky Lynn Felton, 50, of Atchison, KS passed away Saturday, June 29, 2019, after a long hard fought battle of cancer at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Vicky was born August 12, 1968 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Carl Joseph and Ann Lee (Norton) Tull.  She was an in home day care provider.  Vicky was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  She was all about her family, especially her grandkids and day care kids.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Raymond L. Lattimer, 66, of Axtell, Kan., died June 27, 2019 at St. Francis Campus in Topeka, Kan.

Visitation is Monday, July 1, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell.  The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 2 at the Axtell United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Wymore Cemetery in Wymore, Neb.

George Joseph Lehning, 70, of Troy, Kansas died Sunday evening, June 23, 2019 at his home.

George was born on May 10, 1949 in Queens, New York to John and Marie (Saur) Lehning.  He served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.

He was preceded in death by his parents & daughter, Sarah.

George married Ruth Parrish in 1989.  She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include his children; Constance, Jacob and Jeremy Lehning, Dawn Marshall (Lew), Bruce Parks (Gina), Charles Parks (Kathi) and Christopher Parks (Julie); Brother, John Lehning.

Several grandchildren.  One of his most memorable moments is when his grandson and name sake, Joseph Parks became an Eagle Scout and chose him for the most influential person in his life.

Kaeleb Vice, age 35 of Nemaha, passed away at his home Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

Survivors include his wife Cazzie of Nemaha; children Kegan, Chloe, and Kinley; parents Kathryn and Rodney Keithley of Auburn; Noha and Carrie Vice of Stella; sisters and brothers-in-law Alicia Renville and Cameron Nicholson of Lincoln; Tiffany and Perry Thompson of Pembrook, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law Lucas and Bailey Vice of Augusta, KS; Logan and Jayme Vice of Shubert; Evan and Megan Keithley of Lincoln; grandmothers Marilyn Renville of Augusta, KS; Shirley Vice of Stella; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be Tuesday, July 2, 10:30 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial will follow in Harris Cemetery at Barada. Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday noon to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00.

Rosalie (Pape) Koppa, 96, of Hiawatha, KS died June 26, 2019 at Mosiac Life Care.

Rosalie was born February 16, 1923 at Robinson, KS daughter of Warner and Laura Nichols Pape.

She attended country school at Heckler and graduated from Hiawatha High School with the Class of 1940.  She attended 2 years at Highland College and taught country school at Heckler and Mt. Roy.

She married Herbert Koppa at the Pape Family home on December 21, 1945.  After a busy farm life they retired and moved to Hiawatha in 1984.  She was a volunteer at BCDS thrift store for many years.  She was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church, Zion United Methodist Women, and had been a member of the Red Hat Society, Zion Homemakers Unit, and Asbury Club.  She also enjoyed spending time at Senior Citizen, bus trips and playing cards.

She is survived by daughter-in-law Eileen Koppa, Robinson, KS, one grandson Justin (Angela) Koppa, Shawnee, KS, three great grandchildren, Gavin, Rylee, and Chloe Koppa, Shawnee, KS, and brother Warner (Charlene) Pape, of Hiawatha, KS, and dear friend Esther Miller.

Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herbert November 9, 2003, son Gene Koppa July 31, 2011, brother Willis Pape and 2 grandchildren.

Funeral Services are planned for 11 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2019 at the Zion United Methodist Church northeast of Robinson.  Pastor Paul Waters will officiate.  Interment will follow at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha, KS.

Marilyn J. Barnes, 89, of Topeka, KS passed away Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. She was born November 23, 1929 in Soldier, the daughter of Forest and Mary (Wykert) Vanderwall.

Marilyn attended Soldier High School, graduating in 1947. She worked for the State of Kansas, Board of Agriculture and Kansas Museum of History for 25 years.

She was a former member of the Soldier Christian Church, Delia Presbyterian Church and Rolling Hills Christian Church, Topeka.

Marilyn married Ronald “Ronnie” Barnes on March 14, 1948 in Soldier, KS. They shared 57 years of marriage before Ronnie passed away on February 21, 2005. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris Vanderkolk and three brothers, Richard, Wayne and Harold Vanderwall.

Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Lesser (Bill) of Topeka; three sons, Jack Barnes (Darla) of Morrill;  Terry Barnes (Debi) of Topeka; and Ray Barnes (Julie) of Topeka. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Lowell F. “Brownie” Brown 77, of Hiawatha, passed away June 17, 2019 at his brother Steve’s home is Robinson, Kansas.

Lowell was born August 31, 1941 at Chapman, Kansas to Harold O. and Geneva L. (Martin) Brown.

He is survived by his son Calvin of Hiawatha and three brothers: Steve of Robinson, Kansas, Martin of Omaha, Nebraska and Dana of Gilbert, South Carolina, also an aunt and several cousins.

Brownie worked for the United Telephone Company for 39 years, retiring as an installer/repairman, working mainly in the Brown and Doniphan county area. He had been active in the BPOE #1741 Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge #35, AF&AM, both of Hiawatha, Moila Shrine of St. Joseph, MO, and the Hiawatha Jaycees. He enjoyed participating in the Hiawatha Halloween Parade for many years with the Shrine’s motorcycle club.

He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and was an avid photographer. He always enjoyed taking pictures of the Eagles at Squaw Creek Refuge where he would spend hours watching the Eagles and all the wild life. Brownie also enjoyed taking pictures at the Jingle Bell Ride.

Brownie will be missed by his family and host of friends. When working, he would always take time to visit and was dedicated to resolving what issues you may be having with phone service. He would sit on his porch and would always have a big wave when you drove by.

To celebrate Brownie’s life, a short service is planned for Saturday June 29th at 11:00 am at the Fisher Center Gymnasium in Hiawatha. Tony French will officiate.

Dennis Dean Tull, 47, of Cummings, KS lost his battle of brain cancer on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family.

Dennis was born on January 31st, 1972 in Atchison Kansas the son of Beverly (Kirkham-Tull) Nitz and Howard Tull. Dennis graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1991. He worked construction jobs for Beien Construction, Atchison Castings, Schuetz Locker Plant, Bottoroff Construction, worked as a farrier, worked at Atchison Tubular Services, Premier Fencing, Owen’s and Sons Concrete and many other places. Dennis was a member of the Lancaster Saddle Club and the Giddy Up Gang. He enjoyed training and riding horses, teaching his children and grandchildren how to ride horses, and his sons how to bull ride.

He was married to Angie (Beien) Hughes on Aug 14, 1992. They were later divorced. He was married to Tiffany Goepfert on Nov. 8th, 2004. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons Colton Gabriel, Vandenburg, CA and Canyon Tull, of the home, two daughters Ashley Tull (John Elfrits) Cummings, KS and Brooklyn Rhyne, Manhattan, KS, his mother, Beverly (Skip) Nitz, Cummings, KS and Howard Tull, Farmington, KS, Sisters Kathy Tull (Karrie Eckhardt) Cummings, KS and Stephanie (Duane) Sinclair, Everest, KS, and Kari Turner, Oskaloosa, KS., two brothers Patrick (Shellie) Tull, and Jason (Tiffany) Nitz, both of Cummings, KS, two grandchildren Tyler Elifrits and Jade Elifrits, seventeen nieces and nephews, twenty four great nieces and nephews and one great great niece. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Jack Kirkham and Joseph Tull, grandmothers Betty Kirkham, Blanch Tull, and Annie Lee Kirkham, Aunt Lois Wilbourn and Uncle Donnie Joe Tull , and two great nephews.

Robert “Bob” J. Strathman, 92, of Seneca passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Life Care Center of Seneca.

Bob was born October 24, 1926 in Seneca to Joseph H. and Appolonia Fangman Strathman. He attended grade school and high school at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Seneca, graduated high school with the Class of 1944. As a youth, he worked at the family owned business, purchased in 1926, Seneca Bottling Plant and Wholesale; as well as, the Gillford Hotel as a Bell Hop.

He entered the US Navy and served in World War II from 1944-1946. At the end of the war, he returned to civilian life. On November 11, 1950 Bob had the great fortune to marry Grace Block at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. The couple raised five children and celebrated 63 ½ years of marriage. Bob spent his entire life working at Seneca Wholesale Company, Inc; and the business remains in the family. In retirement his schedule included daily coffee at multiple locations throughout town and regular visits to residents at local nursing facilities. He never met a stranger; he enjoyed visiting with everyone he met.

Bob enjoyed simple pleasures and sweets. He enjoyed driving and traveling the backroads and reminiscing about communities of the past. He loved history, especially local history, the history of steam engines and the American Civil War. He was an avid reader. Among his endearing qualities were his kind and generous heart and his love of his family and his community.

Bob was a life-long member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, the St. Joseph’s Society, the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Earl W. Taylor Post #21 of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus Council 1769, all in Seneca.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Appolonia in 1979 and 1996 respectively; a grandson, Keith Strathman in 2007; and siblings, Joseph Strathman, Betty Winterscheidt, Mildred Jilka, Arthur Strathman, William Strathman and Judith Oden.

He is survived by children, Richard Strathman of Seneca, Donald (Julie) Strathman of Seneca, Jean Stueve of Topeka, Ellen Rowland of Lee Summit, MO and Max (Shyla) Strathman of Lawrence; siblings, Lyle (Bernie) Strathman of Mt. Vernon, IA and Rose Mary Riley of Lawrence; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. A nephew, Chris Strathman held a special place in Bob and Grace’s heart.

Rosaries will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 26th at 2 & 7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 AM on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military honors.

Larry E. Craig, 71 years of age, of Wymore passed away at the Crestview Nursing home in Seneca, KS Sunday morning, June 23, 2019. He was born on September 12, 1947 in Odell, NE to Enis “Slim” and Thelma (Creek) Craig. He lived in Wymore most of his life and in Diller for about 25 years. Larry served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator, truck driver, and law enforcement officer. Larry enjoyed deer hunting, repairing small engines, gardening, and his pets. He was especially proud of his service in the Navy.

Survivors include daughters Kimberly Kostman and husband Craig, and Amanda Brumback and husband Zack, all of Sabetha, KS; 4 grandsons; sister Betty Jo Stevens and husband Sam of Beatrice; and longtime companion Kathleen Ullman of Wymore. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Marion “Jack” Craig; and sister Dorothy Ralston.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at the Wymore Cemetery with military graveside services provided by the U.S. Navy and the Wymore American Legion. Martha Hutfles, 92, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 24, 2019 at Falls City. She was born August 17, 1926 at St. Marys, KS to Joseph and Johanna (Bokern) Boeckman.

She married Leo Hutfles on April 11, 1945 at Kelly, KS. He passed away April 21, 2016.

Martha was raised at Kelly, KS and following her schooling she worked various jobs in and around Kelly. When married the couple established their home a couple miles south of Kelly on a farm for three years before moving to Falls City in 1948. She was a homemaker until her children were raised then became a cook at Sacred Heart School and was known for her cinnamon rolls. She retired in 1990. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Martha is survived by her son, Steve and his wife Cathy of Falls City, daughter, Karen Pfister and her husband Tim of Falls City, brothers, Les Boeckman of Topeka, KS, Jerry Boeckman of Hiawatha, KS, Ken Boekman and his wife Mary of Seneca, KS, nine grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, C. B. “Beck” Boeckman, sisters, Bernice Smith, Helen Honeyman and Marcella in infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Lawrence Stoley officiating. Interment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

A. Pauline Borg, 99, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 23, 2019 at Falls City. She was born October 23, 1919 in

rural Phelps County, NE to Axel and Ereka (Anderson) Carlson.

She married Kenneth Earl Borg on November 22, 1942 at Holdrege, NE. He passed away October 29, 2007.

Pauline was raised in Holdrege and graduated Holdrege High School in 1937, then attended Kearney State College before taking employment with First National Bank of Holdrege. When married she followed her husband to Alabama, then North Carolina, then to New Jersey where he shipped overseas to Europe. She then returned to Holdrege, working at the bank again until war’s end at which time she and Kenneth settled in Minden, NE. She worked until her sons were born and then became a home maker until 1971 when she went back to work as the Executive Director of the Minden Housing Authority at East View Court. She continued in this position for fourteen years, retiring in August of 1985. She moved to Falls City following the death of her husband and has lived here since. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Falls City, Rebekkas and United Methodist Women.

Pauline is survived by her sons, Steve and his wife Wanda of Moyock, NC, David and his wife Joyce of Falls City, Ron and his wife Connie Sterling of Phoenix, AZ, Kurt and his wife Holly Brown-Borg of Grand Forks, ND, nineteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Kenneth Carlson.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Lyle K. Schoen officiating. 

The family will greet friends 1 hour prior to service time at church.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, 12:30 PM at Minden Cemetery, Minden, NE with Pastor Peter Choi presiding.

Raymond E. Rilinger, 94, of Seneca, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2019 at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital.

He was born on January 11, 1925 on a farm north of Seneca, to George J. and Mary E. Fangman Rilinger. He attended St. Mary’s Grade School in St. Benedict, Kansas; and graduated from St. Benedict High School with the Class of 1943. As a young man, he helped his father on the farm, while his brothers served in the military.

On September 1, 1951, he married Alice A. Stallbaumer at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. They lived on a farm north of Seneca where they built a new home. They raised hogs, feed cattle, chickens and operated a dairy. After retiring in 1989, they moved into Seneca in March of 1990.

Raymond was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and St. Joseph Society. He was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He helped for 20 years delivering Meals on Wheels in Seneca.  He enjoyed polka dancing, fishing and spending time with his family. He and Alice enjoyed a trip to Germany and a few other bus trips throughout the US, before his wife was stricken with PFP. He was a huge fan of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Ann on November 14, 2000; sons, Dale Regis Rilinger on June 6, 1968 and Eugene A. Rilinger on August 13, 2010; his parents, George on March 4, 1993 and Mary on March 10, 1961; and his brothers, Melvin on February 17, 1969, Albert on February 16, 2007, Aloysius on December 5, 2011, George Jr. on February 23, 2013, Edgar on May 14, 2015 and Paul on October 17, 2017.

Darlene Leona Haug passed away on Monday, June 24, 2019 at Life Care Center of Seneca, surrounded by her loving family.

Darlene was born on November 30, 1926 to Frank C. and Josephine (Burdiek) Strathman on a farm south of Baileyville. Darlene attended Center Grade School and helped on the family farm.  She graduated from Baileyville High School in1944.

Darlene married Urban F. Haug on February 4, 1948, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. After marriage the couple farmed north of Seneca until 1953, and then moved to a farm west of Corning; and made it their home for the next 40 years Together they raised two children and endured the loss of an infant. Darlene was the epitome of a farmer’s wife, working right alongside her husband by making sure he always had a home-cooked meal and tending a huge garden. In 1993, they retired and settled in Seneca. The couple celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary prior to Urban’s death on March 18, 2018.

Darlene was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca; and a former member of the St. Patrick’s Parish in Corning for many years. Darlene had many hobbies including gardening, playing cards, making comforters, playing bingo, baking “Grandma’s Brownies”, and following her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s many activities. She loved attending her family’s sports events and until recently, rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Urban; her parents, Frank and Josephine Strathman; an infant son, Josep; her brothers, Sylvester, Joseph, Adrian and Galen; her sisters, Frances Kramer, Agatha Strathman, Mary Kay Fangman, Berniece Strathman and Eileen Strathman; and grandson, Jason Adams.

Darlene is survived by her children Gary (Mary) of Seneca and Judy (Roger) Adams of Corning; seven grandchildren, Brenda (Ron) Quigley of Corning, Ryan (Melissa) Adams of Topeka, Tom (Amanda) Haug of Seneca, Brian (Amber Hernandez) Haug of Ellis, Janelle (Jim) Stockwell of Shawnee, Danny (Jennifer) Haug of Tonganoxie,  Pam (Nate) Kramer of Seneca; granddaughter-in-law, Laura (Jeremy) Conley of Havensville; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Jeanette Marie (Davis) Frump, 63, of Severance, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 at her home.

Jeanette was born on February 21, 1956 in Fort Riley, Kansas to Albert Charles & Jeanette Louise (Boyd) Davis.

She graduated from Elwood High School. Jeanette worked for Wal-Mart in the customer service department & was a member of the Elwood United Community Church.

Jeanette married Billy Lynn Frump on November 9, 1974 in Elwood, Kansas. He survives of the home.

Roma June Dove, 91, of Sabetha, Kansas entered the larger life on Friday, June 21, 2019.

Second child and younger daughter of Dayrel Elijah and Fern Maurine (Reed) Dove, Roma was born June 13, 1928, east of Severy, Kansas, on farmland which her paternal grandfather had homesteaded in the late eighteen hundreds.

Following the death of her mother in February 1934, Roma was reared by a maternal great-aunt and her husband, Emma and John Barndt of Sabetha, Kansas.

Roma graduated from Sabetha High School in 1946. She earned Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Education degrees at Emporia State University. Graduate work was completed at the University of Kansas where she earned MFA and PhD degrees.

Roma’s 41 year teaching career, which included 30 years in Shawnee Mission schools, began at Franklin, a rural school just east of Sabetha and ended at Emporia State University. For Roma, life was about learning. She reveled in it and was inspired to share her learnings throughout her career and her life.

Roma was preceded in death by her parents; the Barndts who reared her; a sister, Bonnie Jean Moenning; and a brother, Clair Dove.

Roma is survived by one brother, Wendell Dove of Sabetha; and three nephews and two nieces.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the NorthRidge Church in Sabetha, KS. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to service time at the church. Gerald Keith Parker, 81, of Lancaster, KS died Friday, June 21, 2019 as the result of an automobile accident on 286th Rd and 73 Highway in Lancaster, KS.

Gerald was born on Jan. 19, 1938 in Horton, KS the son of Chester N. and Anna B. (Kruseburg) Parker. He attended the Halling Grade School, Denton and graduated from Leona High School in 1957. He served in the Kansas Army National Guard. Mr. Parker worked several place during his life, as a farmer early, then for Hannah Car Wash, Portland, OR, then as Doniphan County Road Foreman and last as performing maintenance as a certified mill Wright, for Abitibi Price, Hiawatha, KS. Gerald was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church, and enjoyed black powder shooting, and target practice with his guns, woodworking, metal working in his shop, making things out of leather and made several baby cradles, rocking horses, quilt racks, and welding pieces. He was mentioned in 4-H Who’s Who and especially enjoyed talking and helping his friends, family and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was married to Jolene Susan Copper in Dec. of 1966. They were later divorced. He was married to Wanda Elaine Eagle on March 12, 1999. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include four sons, Todd Parker, Lancaster KS, Scottie Parker, Sioux Falls, SD, Joel Parker, Leona, KS, and Joshua (Crystal) Parker, Raytown, MO, two step sons; Scottie Keller, Atchison and Adam Keller, Effingham, KS, a step daughter, Stephanie (Josh) Garrison, Atchison KS, a brother Richard M. Parker, Independence, MO, fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. His parents, a sister, Marilyn JoAnn Adams, preceded him in death.

Goldie Belle Smyth, 95, formerly of Atchison, KS passed away on June 19, 2019 in Pampa, TX.

Goldie was born August 5, 1923, the daughter of James and Ellen (Miller) Snopak. She attended the Wieman School. Goldie worked as a housekeeper for Mount Saint Scholastica and then for the Kansas Industry for the Blind. She was a member of the Kansas Association of the Visual and Hearing impaired. Goldie enjoyed crocheting and reading.

Goldie married Victor Smyth on May 8, 1971. He preceded he in death on November 25, 2010. She is survived by one sister Helen Flory, Potter, KS, two daughters Louise and Ron Popplewell, Groom, TX , Diane William Craine, Waldron, MO, ten grandchildren twenty great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren.

Bill was born on September 20, 1937 in Horton, KS, the son of John M. and Susie I. (Byer) Bennett.  He was a farmer for many years. He also worked as a surveyor for the US Department Agriculture before he and Janice moved to Utah to serve the Lord as missionaries.  Bill was a servant of the Lord and a member of the First Baptist Church in Nephi, Utah. He loved to tinker, take things apart and scrap it.  His family described him as a professional piddler.  In retirement, Bill  loved to work in his shop, latch hook and people watch.

Bill married Janice Carol Snyder on August 29, 1959 at the Methodist Church in Effingham, KS.  She preceded him in death on September 3, 2017.  Survivors include a son Bradley (Brenda) Bennett, Broken Arrow, OK, three grandchildren, Ainsley (Jesse) Hallett, Tulsa, OK, Amitey Bennett, Broken Arrow, OK and Chaney Rockwell, Youngwood, PA.He was also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Virginia Rockwell.

Wayne was born on August 23, 1937 in Atchison KS the son of Gene and Pearl (Cox) Rygaard. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1955.  He served in the National Guard. Wayne had worked as a logger nearPort Angles, WA. before moving back here.  Grizz worked most of his life as a mechanic for the Capital Electric Company, Kansas City.  He enjoyed shooting black powder rifles, tinkering around the house, a simple country living, hunting, fishing, and helping his children with projects.

He was married to Janet Worrel on Nov. 28, 1959 at Sacred Heart Church, Atchison.  Mrs. Rygaard survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son Eric Rygaard, Lawrence, KS, two daughters, Mary Flynn, Topeka, KS, and Bonny (Mark) Cassella, Topeka, KS, twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.  His parents, two sons, Kevin and Mark Rygaard, and two sisters Marcia and Edra Ruth Rygaard preceded him in death.
 

Margaret E. Shafer, 92, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 18, 2019 at Falls City. She was born November 13, 1926 at Falls City to William and Ann (McMahon) Murphy.

She married Donald F. Shafer on November 24, 1948 at Dawson, NE. He passed away February 9, 1969

Margaret was raised at Dawson and graduated from Dawson High School. When married the couple made their home at Stella, NE and then moved to the Dawson area and into Falls City in 1975. She was a homemaker her entire life and had worked for F. W. Woolworth and Gambles at Falls City, she then helped to care for her mother and after her death she helped her brother Gene farm. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Jane Ann Hall and her husband Richard of Salt Lake City, UT, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Nancy Shafer, brothers, Robert and Cecil Eugene Murphy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 24, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Lawrence Stoley as the presiding priest. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Dawson.

Marion I. “Bud” Kelley, 87, Atchison, Kansas died Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at Country Care Nursing Facility, Easton, Kansas.

Bud was born July 17, 1931 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Guy Paul Kelley, Sr., and Mary Cluke Kelley. He attended Lincoln School and graduated from Atchison High School.

He and Alberta Clayton were united in marriage on May 5, 1957 in Atchison, Kansas. Alberta preceded him in death on April 18, 1983. He then married Cheryl Todd on November 20, 1983 and she preceded him in death on May 9, 2014.

Bud began his employment with Locomotive Finished Materials (L.F.M.) in Atchison and later became employed with Kansas Power $ Light Company where he served for 25 years until his retirement in 1998. Following his retirement he drove a school bus for USD 409 and owned and operated the Bud Kelley and Son’s Cleaning Service.

Bud served his country with the United States Navy from September 10, 1951 until his honorable discharge on September 9, 1955.

He was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church of Atchison. He was chairman of the Church Deacon Board; a choir member; and chairman of the laymen for the Northeastern District, and drove the bus for Camp Ascension. Bud was also a member of the NAACP. In his spare time he loved to share his talent of singing, he sang with the Navy Bluejacket Honors Guard; the Atchison Rivermen; the Kelley Family Choir and sang for numerous weddings and funerals. He was also an avid sports enthusiast.

Survivors include seven sons, Rev. Michael (Gladys) Kelley, Atchison, KS; Marion Kelley, Jr., Stockbridge, GA; Marcus (Tammi) Kelley, Sr., Atchison, KS; Mario (Missy) Kelley, Atchison, KS; Sean Tolson, Atchison, KS; Billy (Vickie) Lewis, Wichita, KS; Alfred “Al” Steed, Kansas City, MO; four daughters, Rela Kelley, Atchison, KS; Roxanna McMillian, Topeka, KS; Roslaind (Rick) Stillman, Atchison, KS; Dian Cunningham, Dalton, GA; two brothers, Otha “Dude” (Anna) Kelley, Atchison, KS; George (Rita) Kelley, Sr., Atchison, KS; a sister, Viola Lewis, Detroit, MI; twenty four grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter, Harmony Foster.

 Margaret Ann Fricke, 96, of Prescott, AZ, passed away June 3, 2019 in Prescott, AZ. She was born March 23, 1923 in Delia, KS, the daughter of Louis M. and Margaret (Salisbury) Hurla. She was the youngest of 11 children. 

Margaret spent her childhood on farms near Delia, KS until 1939. The family then moved to Valley Falls, KS and she attended Stach Grade School (it is now located near Topeka in Historical Park) until the 8thgrade. Margaret attended 3 years at Ward High School in Kansas City, KS and graduated from Valley Falls High School as Salutatorian. Following graduation, she worked in Topeka, KS and attended Cadet Nurse Corp- where she met her beloved husband Forrest. Graduating from St. Francis School of Nursing in 1947 as a Registered Nurse.

She worked in a Falls City, NE hospital for a few years, before returning to Topeka, KS. She also lived in Kansas City, MO, Council Bluffs, IA and Aurora, NE. In 1981 she moved to Arizona; living in ChinoValley, Mesa, Tempe, Cottonwood and Prescott.

Margaret married Forrest K. Fricke in December of 1947 in Topeka, KS. They celebrated over 30 years of marriage until his death in 1977. She was also preceded in death by her 10 siblings. 

 She is survived by her 3 sons and Daughter: Mark Fricke (his wife Stephanie) of Prescott Valley, AZ; Randall Fricke of Black Canyon City, AZ; Anita Scarim (her husband Roger) of Cottonwood, AZ; Dale Fricke (his wife Denise) of Bozeman, MT; Her grandchildren Matthew Lawrence, Hope Scarim, Stephanie Scarim; Hannah Fricke; John Fricke (his wife Mackenzie) Joshua Fricke, Jacob Fricke (his wife Elisabeth) great-granddaughter Gwen Lawrence and many nieces and nephews.

Sheila Kay Yoder Kirkendall, 83, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 19, 2019 at Falls City. She was born November 18, 1935 at Falls City to Francis and Gladys (Arnold) Yoder. She graduated from Falls City High School in 1954.

She married Donald J. Kirkendall on June 24, 1956 at Falls City, and they lived on a farm east of Falls City. The couple had two children. He passed away April 4, 2001.

Sheila worked at Edde Motors after graduation from Falls City High School in 1954 until 1958 when she became a fulltime housewife and mother for fourteen years. She later went to work at Richardson County Bank and Trust as a bookkeeper and teller until 1994.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (20th and Towle St.) where she served on the church council, was a Sunday school teacher, and an active member of Deborah Circle. She was a member of Does Drove #56 of Falls City where she held many offices throughout the years. She loved to play bridge and up to the time of her death was playing cards with three different groups. She loved sports and either watched it on television or was at a grandson’s, great-grandson’s or neighbor’s game every time they played.

Sheila is survived by her son, Doug and his wife Linda of Falls City, daughter, Debbie Ebel and her husband David of Verdon, grandsons, Tim and his wife Molly, Kyle and his wife Heather both of Falls City, great-grandsons, Reid and Chase. She is also survived by a sister, Barbara Rich and her husband Tom of Reno, NV, sisters-in-law, Janet and Rhonda Kirkendall, brothers-in-law, Marlin Peck and Larry Kirkendall, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and father and mother-in-law, James and Lois Kirkendall.

Valora Mae McKee Schmidt, 88, of Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born on April 9, 1930 in Fairview, Kansas the daughter of Nick and Dorothy Bindel McKee. Valora graduated from Powhattan High School in 1948.

She worked as a bookkeeper for several drug stores and Walmart in Omaha, Nebraska before retiring. She was a member of the Powhattan United Methodist Church, Powhattan American Legion Wenger Post #373 Auxiliary and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis Schmidt of the home, Hiawatha, Kansas; two sons, Robb Edwards of Delray Beach, Florida and Richard Edwards of Lawrence, Kansas; two brothers, Calvin McKee of Hiawatha, Kansas and Keith McKee of Salina, Kansas; two sisters, Cora Smith of Arlington, Washington and Vivian Pfister of Holton, Kansas; five grandchildren and two great granddaughters.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Louie McKee.

Having received the sacraments and the apostolic pardon Fr. Denis Meade, OSB, died peacefully on June 18, 2019. James Thomas Meade was born to parents Joseph Patrick and Ella (Flannery) Meade on October 16, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa. Raised in rural Madison County, he attended grade school in Cumming, Iowa. After beginning his high school studies at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, he transferred to Maur Hill Prep School in Atchison, Kansas. After his graduation, he began history studies at St. Benedict’s College. In 1949 he entered the Novitiate at St. Benedict’s Abbey, receiving the monastic name Denis, so named for St. Denis of Paris.

After professing first vows, then Frater Denis completed his undergraduate studies and was sent to Rome for priesthood studies and to pursue a degree in Canon Law. During his years in Europe he professed solemn vows at the Abbey of Montecassino on May 26, 1953. He would go on to be ordained to the transitional diaconate at the Abbey of Saint-Paul de Wisques, France, on September 8, 1954. He was ordained to the priesthood at the Abbey of San Pietro in Assisi, Italy on June 28, 1955. Following the completion of his studies at Sant’Anselmo, he studied for five years at the Lateran University, obtaining license and doctoral degrees in Canon Law.

Upon returning to Atchison in 1961 Fr. Denis began his principal ministry as a professor of Theology at St. Benedict’s College. For the next 26 years he would teach thousands of students, along with an eight-year stint as a dormitory prefect, overseeing one floor of student housing and living with the students.

From 1969-1981 Fr. Denis received his first assignment as a formator of young monks, being appointed novice master, charged with overseeing the Abbey’s newest members for twelve years.

In 1987, Fr. Denis put his Canon Law degree to work in a new way, volunteering to serve the marriage tribunal for the diocese of Jataí in Goiás, Brazil, praying and working alongside his brother monks at the Abbey’s mission house, St. Joseph Priory.

Returning to the United States in 1989, Fr. Denis resumed his work as a professor of theology at Benedictine College. For the next twelve years he shaped the department, serving as its chair and making critical hires that set the department up for the success that it now enjoys.

In 2001, Fr. Denis returned to Brazil to once again serve St. Joseph Priory, this time putting his experience as a novice master to work, serving as both Novice Master and Director of Formation. He also assisted with parish ministry and with the local marriage tribunal until departing Brazil in 2005.

Once again returning to the Abbey from another continent, Fr. Denis was called upon to continue his service as a formator of new monks. He was also called upon to serve the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas Marriage Tribunal as a Canon Lawyer, adjudicating annulment cases. In recent years, Fr. Denis had been working on an addition to the 1957 publication Kansas Monks: A History of St. Benedict’s Abbey; he was nearing completion of this work.

In retirement, Fr. Denis continued to serve the monastic community in a variety of ways, celebrating Masses for the infirm monks, serving as Abbey Archivist, celebrating Masses for Mount St. Scholastica’s Dooley Center, serving as secretary for Abbot James Albers, and much more.

Father Denis was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Sr. Miriam Meade, Kathryn Meade Cummings, John, Carmelita Blackman, Helena Meade Bell, Joseph, and Paula Boucher. He is survived by his brother monks at St. Benedict’s Abbey, many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends, alumni, and current students whose lives he touched. Vigils for the Dead, followed by visitation, will be prayed on Sunday, June 23, at 7:00 p.m. in St. Benedict's Abbey Church. The Mass of Christian Burial for Father Denis will be celebrated in St. Benedict’s Abbey Church on Monday, June 24, at 10:30 a.m., with interment following in the Abbey cemetery.

Randy Servaes, 60, Atchison, Kansas, passed away peacefully June 18, 2019, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as officiant. Interment will follow in Sumner Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Friday, June 21st from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Randy was born April 14, 1959, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Eugene and Sally (Anthony) Servaes. He attended Potter Grade School and graduated from Atchison County Community High School.

He and Mary Celeste Fladung, were united in marriage on May 24, 1982, in Atchison, Kansas.

Randy served as a dozer operator. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards at the American Legion, and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He always enjoyed a good fish fry with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Servaes of the couple’s home in Atchison, a daughter, Celeste (Jason) Pantle, Cummings, KS, a son, Hunter (Cassie) Servaes, Atchison, KS, his mother, Sally Servaes, a brother, Tony Servaes, Atchison, KS, two sisters, Terry Cave, Atchison, KS, Kim (Phil) Weatherford, Atchison, KS, and two grandchildren, Audrey Pantle and Finn Servaes.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Servaes.

Melvin Hjetland died Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at The Pines in Hiawatha, Kansas. He was 97-years-old.

Mr. Hjetland was born on August 1, 1921, to Perry and Sophia Hjetland of Everest, Kansas. He lived all of his life on the family farm near Everest, until a move with his wife, Helen, to Hiawatha in 1989.

Melvin graduated from Everest High School in 1939. On April 24, 1949, he was united in holy matrimony with Helen Hendrickson of St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mr. Hjetland spent his entire career as a local farmer, growing corn and soybeans. Early in his farming life, he also raised cows, hogs, and chickens.

A life-long member of the Upper Wolf Lutheran Church, Mr. Hjetland loved telling jokes, eating lemon drops, and enjoying homemade cherry pie. After retiring from the farm, you could find him tinkering in the garage as well as repairing and selling found lawnmowers.

In his later years you would often see Melvin going for rides to check out the local farms, occasionally stopping to see how well the year’s crops were doing.

Mr. Hjetland will be missed by all who knew him and especially by his loving family.

As author Sheri Dew once wrote “We are all farmers, tending a little part of the Lord’s vineyard.” We are praying that Melvin is already directing the harvest.

Mr. Hjetland is survived by his children, Jerry (Joyce) Hjetland of Everest, Kansas, Randy (Terri) Hjetland of Calera, Alabama, Peggy Hjetland (Bob) Kaiser of Shawnee, Kansas, his nephew, Bob (Cheryl) Hjetland, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his wife, parents, and his siblings, Lehman Hjetland and Margurete Hjetland.

Melvin will lie in state from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2019 and from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. The family will have a private burial and a memorial service will be held sometime in the future to allow for family members to make travel arrangements.

Margaret Weagel, 98, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 14, 2019 at Falls City. She was born April 28, 1921 at Coblenz, Germany to Ernest and Anna (Adams) McGinnis.

She married Henry “Hank” Weagel on April 27, 1946 at Kansas City, MO. He passed away May 27, 1993.

Margaret was raised at Dawson and graduated Dawson High School in 1939. Following graduation she cleaned houses. When married the couple established their home in Kansas City and she was employed as a paralegal at a law firm. She retired in 1986 and move to Illinois. In 1999 she moved to Falls City and has lived here since. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Legion of Mary and Altar Society.

Margaret is survived by her Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Qualls, Joe, John, Tom, Carl, James and Mike and sisters, Anna Lucille Farnsworth and Rosemary Inglis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father David Oldham officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Kathryn “Kay” Werner, 92, of Lincoln, NE passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019 at Journey Hospice House in Lincoln, NE. She was born October 4, 1926 in Dallas, TX, the daughter of George F. and Ethel A. (Achten) Keggin; two pioneer families to the Granada/Bancroft area.

Kay graduated from Ward Belmont College in Nashville, TN, where she was active publications and art groups.

She was a former member of Grand Island Sketch Club, Lincoln-Great Plains Rug Hookers and Questers, Bas Blue Book Club. She also volunteered at the Des Moines Art Center.

Kay married Harold H. Werner on June 6, 1946 in Nashville, TN. He preceded her in death on March 10, 2019. Kay was noted for her creativity and devotion to family and friends.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas Werner of West Des Moines, IA and Douglas Werner (Karen) of Austin, TX; 3 grandchildren, Dr. Brian C. Werner (April), Megan E. Werner-Mann (Steven) and Katelyn S. Werner and 5 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Irene “Peggy” Brant, 98, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019 at the Apostolic Christian Home Assisted Living in Sabetha.

Peggy was born August 13, 1920 in Duel County, Nebraska, the daughter of Harry and Trudy Brant. Her family moved to Cameron, Missouri when she was two years old where she attended and graduated from the schools there. Peggy later graduated from Huff Business College in Kansas City, Missouri.

She received the nickname of “Peggy O’Neil” at about two years of age and was called Peggy the rest of her life.

Peggy worked for a short time for Transworld Airline in Kansas City, Missouri. She moved to Sabetha, Kansas in 1940 where she was employed by the A.F. and Ivan Roberts Construction Companies for over 50 years.

She was active in the Business & Professional Women’s Club at the local, state, and national levels. She served as State President of the Business & Professional Women’s Club of Kansas, and on the board of the Business & Professional Women’s Club of USA. Peggy was an Area Representative for Christian Women’s Clubs and an active volunteer in her church as well as the community.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Donald R. Brant.

Peggy is survived by her distant cousins, and her extended family of Al and Susan Roberts of Sabetha, Kansas and Marilyn Walsh of Wichita, Kansas, and their families.

Elvin Francis Goodman, 84, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019 at his residence.

Elvin was born January 16, 1935 in Sabetha, KS the son of Clay and Mary (Bindle) Goodman. He attended Franklin School until 8th grade.

Elvin married Beverly Lape in Falls City, Nebraska on September 12, 1956. They resided north of Sabetha where Elvin farmed and worked at Mid America Dairy. In 1958, they bought a farm near Hiawatha. The next three years he worked for Wilde Tool Company. In 1962 they moved to their current residence north of Sabetha. He bought a milk can route and continued to farm at this time for approximately seven years. After his time running the milk route, he became a dairyman himself. He continued milking and farming for the next 17 years. Elvin continued to grow his farm during this time, raising hogs and later stock cows. Elvin and Beverly owned and operated Hearthside Country Store in Sabetha for 22 years.

Elvin was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Walter Goodman, Harry Goodman, Albert Goodman, and Melvin Goodman; and his sisters, Wilma Albertson and Verna Kosman.

Elvin is survived by his wife, Beverly of the home; his children, Janet (Mike) Valdivia of Topeka, KS, Tami (Bill) Strathman of Sabetha, KS, Dennis (Dorothy) Goodman of Sabetha, KS, Teresa (Brad) Edelman of Sabetha, KS, Michael Goodman of St. Joe, MO, and Eileen (B.J.) Burenheide of Westmoreland, KS; his brother, Robert Goodman of Sabetha, KS; and sisters, Lucille Kissel of Sabetha, KS, and Mildred Dade of Topeka, KS; and 29 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

James L. “Jim” Brull, 75, of Atchison, Kansas passed away peacefully June 16, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was born September 30, 1943, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Anthony and Emma (Atzert) Brull. He attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Maur Hill Prep School in 1961.

He and the former Marilyn Schoenfelder were united in marriage on August 3, 1963, at St. Benedict’s Church in Bendena, Kansas.

Jim began his full time employment at Tony’s Dairy delivering milk door to door, he then was a welder at WeMac before becoming a service man at Commercial Vending until later buying into the company to become a co-owner and operator for a total of thirty-three years. He co-owned and operated the Wharf for twenty-two years. He worked part time taking tickets at Arrowhead Stadium and as an assembler at Walmart.

Jim was a member of St. Louis Church at Good Intent until moving to Atchison in 1989, where he was a devout member of Sacred Heart Church until its closing. He is a member of St. Benedict Parish, Sacred Heart Council #723 of the Knights of Columbus, the William T. Jochems General Assembly #1716 of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the Atchison Elks Club.

Jim enjoyed life and loved spending time with his family traveling, boating, hunting and taking trips to the Ozarks. He truly enjoyed mowing grass, spending countless hours keeping a pristine yard and decorating for all holidays, especially Christmas.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Marilyn Brull, of the couple’s home in Atchison, three sons, Mark (Brenda) Brull, Jeff (Tracy) Brull, Brian (Christy) Brull; and six grandchildren, Alex, Kendra, Branson, Brayden, Tanner and Nick Brull.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his three siblings, Tony Brull, Joe Brull and Phyllis Regan.

Edna M. Berridge, 86, of Holton, KS, passed away Monday, May 6, 2019 at her home. She was born October 4, 1932 in Holton, KS the daughter of Scott and Laura (Thayer) Berridge.    

Edna graduated from Holton High School in 1950 and attended Kansas State University and Washburn University.

In Edna’s early years, she worked for the State of Kansas as a secretary. She then went to work for a few years for an oil company in Colorado. She spent the majority of her career employed for many years for the Federal Government Army Corps of Engineers. Edna lived 24 years in Germany, 15 years in Washington DC and retired in Holton. She was a lifelong traveler and enjoyed Europe and the Mid-East.

Edna was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her sister, Lauretta Fenton of Kansas City, MO and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Donna Weatherford and a brother, Scott Berridge, II.

Dorothy Mae “Dot” Koch passed away on June 17, 2019 at the Nemaha Community Hospital surrounded by her family.

Dorothy was born on May 12 – Mother’s Day – 1931 on a farm southeast of Seneca, the daughter of George and Stella (Lierz) Mergenmeier.  She attended numerous one room schools, and graduated from the 8th grade at St. Peter & Paul Catholic School. She then worked in numerous restaurants including the old Dutch Mill.

Dorothy married Sylvester “Ves” John Koch on April 15, 1950 and they then lived on a farm northwest of Baileyville.  They purchased a farm southeast of Baileyville in 1965 where they had 2 more children and raised 12 children.  When Ves died on March 16, 1970 Dot continued the dairy farm operation with the help of all her children.  She also then started raising and selling dogs.  In 1976, Dot and family was selected as the Kansas Farm Family of the year and were the national runner up.  In 1990, she sold the dairy cows and retired.  She then started giving her time to “go play bingo” six nights per week, with Saturday night being church night at the Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville.

Dorothy is survived by 10 children plus 2 who preceded her in death.  They are:  Nick (Ann) Koch of Cheraw, CO; Jerry (Julie) Koch of Baileyville, KS; Charlie (Annette) Koch of Baileyville, KS; Greg “Beaver” (Deb) Koch of Baileyville, KS; Tom “Bones” of Baileyville, KS; Deb (Randy) Warchuck of Ruth, MI; Annette Wietharn of Overland, KS; Mary (Doug) Wietharn of St. Marys, KS; Liz (Mike) Stallbaumer of Axtell, KS; Stellar Redder of Topeka, KS( Pete and Rosie who previously passed on).  She is also survived by her sisters, Eleanor Rusche, Seneca and Jeanette Graham, Casper Wyoming; her brother, George Mergenmeier, Topeka; 40 grandchildren; and 58 great grandchildren.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Stella Mergenmeier of Seneca, KS; husband Ves; her son, Pete Koch of Baileyville, KS; her, daughter Rosie Haverkamp of Seneca, KS; and grandson Jeremiah Haverkamp of Seneca, KS.  

Rosaries will be prayed at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville at 2 & 7 PM on Thursday, June 20, 2019.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM at Sacred Heart on Friday, June 21st.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Juanita Marie (Noll) Jones, 82, passed away Monday, June 17, 2019 at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Juanita was born November 17, 1936 in rural Winchester, the fourth child of A.T. and Pearl (Servaes) Noll. She attended Oak Grove Grade School in the Mooney Creek community of Jefferson County and graduated from Winchester Rural High School in 1954. Juanita worked for more than 30 years as a payroll clerk for the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL), first at St. John Hospital and then at the Sisters of Charity Mother House. During that period, she processed 798 payrolls, missing only one pay period because the doctor would not release her to walk down the hospital hallway and process payroll.

She married Eugene F. Kramer in 1959; they later divorced. She married Charles E. Jones on July 6, 1977; he preceded her in death in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother Thomas T. Noll, sister Judy Sigman, stepson Dayle Jones and grandson Brandon Behne.

She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Hill of Holton: son Tony (Sherry) Kramer of Easton, stepdaughter Diane (John) Behne and stepson David (Tracy) Jones of Easton, and stepson Donald Jones of Leavenworth. She was blessed with six granddaughters, five grandsons and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Nina (Leo) Kreutzer, Doris (Don) Ruhlman and Ruth Hoffman, a sister-in-law Dorothy Noll, as well as many nieces and nephews. Juanita was also preceded in death by a lifelong friend John Sloop.

Juanita’s love was everything in nature including flowers, birds, fishing, mushroom hunting and watching meteor showers in the middle of the night. Her time was always spent tending to her garden and flowers, and tromping through the woods on her parents’ farm. There was no boundary to her care for others and her desire to help people. She was a guiding light and shoulder to cry on for many. Her love will live on in all whom she touched.

Avitus Francis Haverkamp, 89, of Wetmore, passed away June 17, 2019, at Life Care Center in Seneca, surrounded by his loving family. Avitus was born November 19, 1929, on the family farm in Kelly, Kansas, to George and Evelyn (Winkler) Haverkamp. He graduated from Kelly High School in 1947 and began farming with his father. He was a member of the Army National Guard from 1951-1952 and worked on a road crew in 1955. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church of Wetmore for 67 years.

On September 8, 1951, he married the love of his life, Elda Mae Phillips at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Seneca, Kansas. They made their home on a farm just outside of Wetmore for 65 years, before Avitus entered the nursing home and Elda moved to Seneca to be near her beloved. Avitus and Elda celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2001 and their 65th anniversary in 2016. He had a great passion for farming; raising crops, cattle, hogs and a Holstein dairy. The fall harvest was his favorite part of farming. He was one of the most hard-working men who never knew a stranger. Avitus was particular with everything, and he and his wife took pride in maintaining a well-kept farm. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards and puzzles, and was the happiest when surrounded by his family.

He leaves behind his wife, Elda Mae of Seneca; daughter’s Kathy (Jay) Wheeler, Wetmore; Lori (Bruce) Elliott, Lees Summit, MO; Gail (Jerry) Hermesch, Centralia and a son, Chris (Tracey) Haverkamp of Silver Lake. His legacy continues through 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, Melvin (Carolyn) Haverkamp and George (Jolene) Haverkamp, both of Seneca and one sister, Georgina (Harlan) Holthaus, Baileyville.

He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Francis Haverkamp in 1981; son-in-law, Jay Orville Wheeler in 2009; granddaughter, Alyssa Marie Elliott in 2010; great-grandson, Peyton Michael Topping in 2014; and granddaughter, Amanda Rae Elliott in 2017. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Robert (Bob) Haverkamp and William (Bill) Haverkamp.

Glenda Jean Elrod, age 73, was born on January 2, 1946, in Loup City, Nebraska to Cecil and Virginia Fern (Reed) Elrod.  She was baptized on October 5, 1947 at the Methodist Church in Litchfield, Nebraska along with her father and siblings.  Glenda has been a resident of Region V Auburn since September 6, 1978.  The family wishes to express our appreciation for all the loving care shown by staff all these many years.  They also would like to thank the community of Auburn for being so kind and welcoming to Glenda.  God’s angels took Glenda to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 8, 2019, in Auburn, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of 73 years, 5 months and 6 days.

Charles Larry Allen, 75, of Lenexa, KS (formerly of Morrill, KS), passed away June 13, 2019 at Overland Park, KS. He was born July 21, 1943 at Falls City, NE to Charles and Marjorie (Sheeley) Allen, Jr. 

Charles worked in data processing at Omaha area banks until he retired to Morrill and became a professional card player. He attained Life Master as a Bridge player and was also an avid player of other games.

Charles is survived by his brothers, David and his wife Joyce of Weatherby Lake, MO, Jeffrey and his wife Susan of Shawnee, KS, Mark and his wife Nancy of St. Joseph, MO and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Grace Bible Church, Morrill, KS. Interment was at Maple Cemetery, Salem, NE.

Gary L. Edie, 61, of St. Joseph, MO, died unexpectedly at his home, Thursday, June 13, 2019.

Gary was born in St. Joseph, June 15, 1957, one of five children born to Kenneth Archer and Esther Louise Rodecap Edie. He grew up at White Cloud where he attended school, later graduating from Highland High School. A few years after graduating, he started working for Union Pacific Railroad, from 1978 until he retired as a brakeman in 2017, after 39 years of service. He lived in Falls City, Nebraska a few years, before moving to St. Joseph to make his home where he has lived for 20 years.

Gary enjoyed being outside, and would visit the farm near White Cloud as often as he could, sometimes twice a week. That being said, he enjoyed anything to do with old tractors: displays, shows, etc.

He married Mary Kay Dougherty for 8 years before they divorced in 1984.

Survivors include his children: Jason Edie (Sara) of Denison, Iowa , Josie Bomar of Omaha, Nebraska.; siblings: Kenneth Edie of Robinson, Ronnie Edie of White Cloud, Mary Scott of Hiawatha, Kathy Leeper of White Cloud; and three grandchildren: Trenton, Amarya, and Gage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Brenda Trainer.

Friends may call at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after 12 noon Monday where the family will meet from 6 until 7 that evening.

Timothy “Tim” King, 61, of Elwood, Kansas died at his home Wednesday, June 12, 2019.

Tim was born on September 6, 1957 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Gene and Carol (Ragsdale) King.  He was a lifelong resident of Elwood and worked at Purina Mills in St. Joseph, Missouri.

He married Pam Carr on June 17, 1989 in St. Joseph, Missouri.  She survives of the home.  Tim was preceded in death by his brother, Terry King.

Additional survivors include his son, Jacob King of the home.

Kenneth Voegele, 81, of Lincoln, NE (formerly of Falls City, NE), passed away June 11, 2019 in Lincoln. He was born July 10, 1937 in rural Salem, NE to Melvin and Helen (Santo) Voegele.

He married Elaine Hinz on June 11, 1966 in Dawson, NE.

Kenneth was raised in Falls City and graduated from Falls City Sacred Heart High School in 1955. He started working at Richardson County Bank & Trust in 1959 and retired as Senior Vice President on April 30, 2006. He was a very active member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.  He was one of the founding members of the Sacred Heart Endowment Fund also holding many council positions.  Over the years he served as a member of the Falls City Elks Lodge #393, as a board member of the Community Medical Center, and as an active member of Falls City Downtown Modernization.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Elaine of Lincoln, children, Mary LoChiano and her husband Tony of Lincoln, Eric and his wife Tammy of Easton, PA, brothers, Melvin and Sheryl Warner, and Doug and his wife Barb both of Falls City sisters, Mary Helen McAndrews and her husband Duane, Margaret Ohm, and Susan Davidson all of Omaha, six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Lilian in infancy and Doris Goltz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Lawrence Stoley as the presiding priest. Inurnment will be at Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

Walter A. Pohlman, Jr. 66, of Hiawatha, KS, passed away June 12, 2019 at his home. He was born February 12, 1953 at Grand Island, NE to Walter A. and Twilla (Anderson) Pohlman, Sr. 

Walter enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1973 and he was honorably discharged in 1977.

He married Barbara Schawang on July 3, 1982 at Falls City, NE.

Walter was raised in Lincoln and graduated Northeast High School in 1971. Upon his discharge from the Navy he returned to Lincoln and worked road construction. When married the couple established their home in McCook, NE where he worked in the oil fields. They moved to back to Lincoln in 1985 where he worked for Anderson Construction, before being employed as a foreman for Apollo Steel. They moved to the current family home in 2010 where he worked for Triple C then for Wenger in Sabetha until retiring on February 23, 2016. He was a metal fabricator and master welder most of his life. He was a member of Good News Assembly of God Church and the NRA. 

Walter is survived by his wife, Barbara of Hiawatha, KS, sons, Aaron Fritz and his wife Pheng of San Diego, CA, Matthew Pohlman and his wife Ashley and John Pohlman both of Falls City, father, Walter A. Pohlman, Sr. of Lincoln, brother Mike and his wife Valerie of Brady, NE, sisters, Charlene Schippert and her husband Larry, Roxanne Kotchwar and her husband Terry and Linda Turek all of Lincoln and fifteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and sisters, Cheryl Pohlman and Cathy Kraus.

His funeral will be held on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Good News Assembly of God Church with Pastor Tim Boatright officiating. Interment will be in Rulo Cemetery. Military Graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

Janet Louise (Wilson) Davenport, formerly of Atchison, died Thursday, June 6, at the Parkway Care Rehabilitation Center in Edwardsville, KS.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, June 19, at 2:00, at the First Christian Church, in Atchison.

Survivors include her sister, Marsha Chalfant, of Atchison.

Nicholas Scott Davis, age 27, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2019.

Nicholas was a native of Falls City, Nebraska and has been a long-time resident of Gulfport. He attended Harrison Central High School, where he was a trumpet player in the marching band.  He overcame many obstacles through Teen Challenge. He was a Certified Welder and a CDL Truck Driver.

Nicholas' joy and love in life were contagious and he raised the spirits of everyone in the room.  He had a love for fishing, being anywhere outdoors, playing with his dog Lily and watching his favorite team, the Broncos.

Nicholas was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Henry Davis, his maternal grandfather, Roger Bernard Leuty; and his great-grandpa, George William Leuty.

Survivors include his father, Stephen Patrick Davis; his mother, Beth Ann Leuty; his sisters, Tiffany E. Davis and Samantha P. Davis; and his grandma, Linda Leuty and grandmother, Mary Jane Davis.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church at Rulo with Reverend Jerry Yount officiating. Interment will be in Rulo Cemetery.

Sister Mary Joyce Meyers, OSB, 95, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at the monastery.

The vigil service will be Friday, June 14, at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there Saturday, June 15, at 10:30 a.m.

Sister Mary Joyce was born in Evanston, Ill., on June 27, 1923, to Harry and Barbara Schmidt Meyers. After graduating from St. Scholastica Academy in Chicago, she entered the Mount community in 1944. She taught math, English and science at high schools in Kansas, Colorado, and Missouri and was principal of St. Joseph High School in Shawnee, Kan., for ten years. She held a B.S. in math from Mount St. Scholastica College and M.A. in educational administration from Creighton University. She received the Soroptimist Outstanding Teacher Award and the Trustees’ Fellowship at UMKC. After earning her M.A. and Ph.D. in counseling at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, she worked as a marriage and family counselor at Catholic Social Services in Kansas City, Kan., until 1978. She was also a psychologist at Family Therapy Institute in Kansas City, Mo., for 27 years. She held membership in the American Psychological Association and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. After her retirement, she volunteered at Keeler Women’s Center in Kansas City, Kan., and then assisted in the development office at the monastery. Last year, at age 95, she traveled to Philadelphia as one of the 10 outstanding senior Americans honored by LeadingAge, a national organization of non-profits serving seniors.

Sister Mary Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, by her brothers Harry and Richard Meyers, and sisters Geraldine Meyers and Barbara Perkowitz. She is survived by nieces, nephews and her monastic family.

Ruby A. Brown, 88, of Salem, NE, passed away June 11, 2019 at Falls City, NE. She was born November 16, 1930 at Clinton, MO to Hiram and Dorothy (Runkles) Purcell.

She married Harold Brown on June 16, 1950 at St. Joseph, MO. He passed away August 9, 1995.

Ruby was raised at St. Joseph. When married the couple lived different places due to his work, settling in Salem in 1966. She then started working for Campbell Soup at Tecumseh, NE for nine years and then she became a homemaker and enjoyed to bake, sew and sing.

Ruby is survived by her daughters, Melissa Hall and her husband Mike of Fremont, NE, Kathy Olson of Humboldt, NE, sons, Harold Brown, Jr. of Salem, Tony and his wife Barb of Salem, Larry and his significant other, Lori Young of Salem, Bill and his wife Lynn of Salem, Rocky and his wife Candy of Falls City, sister, Connie Fattig of St. Joseph, twenty-one grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and three sisters.

Josephine E. “Jo” Jimeson, of Hiawatha, passed away surrounded by her family Friday morning, June 7, 2019, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital at the age of 96.  She previously had been a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha for a few years.

Jo was born on the family homestead northwest of Rulo, Nebraska, one of five children of Barney and Mary Santo Wissman.  She grew up on the family farm where she assisted her family with the farm duties: gardening, working with chickens, even helping milk the cows.  Jo attended and graduated 8th grade from Ft. Hazel country school near Rulo, before graduating from Falls City High School with the class of 1940.  After high school, she worked at Flannagan’s Grill and as a bookkeeper for a Falls City bank.

She was engaged to Lloyd E. “Frosty” Jimeson and waited till after his discharge from the Army Air Corps where he served in World War II.  They married August 23, 1945, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Rulo.  Before making the decision to settle in Hiawatha, they traveled to Washington and Colorado for potential places to locate work to be near family.  They made the decision to make Hiawatha their home and lived here nearly all of their married life.  Frosty worked as a mechanic for Hiawatha Motor Co. until 1955 when they purchased land and moved their current house from Mercier, built a garage, and opened an auto, truck, and tractor repair business known as Jimeson Motor Service in Hiawatha.  Jo worked as a bookkeeper for the business until they retired in 2000.  They also enjoyed their property and home at Perry Lake.  Frosty died January 5, 2014.

The Hiawatha community was very important to Jo.  She treated people the same, no one was better than anyone else.  She genuinely was interested in others, always had time to visit, and always had a smile.  Her faith and church, St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha, was a big part of her life.  She served on the Altar society of the Church and was past president.  She had twenty plus years as the First Communion class teacher, served at Eucharistic Minister, and also was Eucharistic Minister for the homebound and nursing home residents.  Jo was active in her community:  was a lifetime member of auxiliaries to VFW Post #5210, and Homer-White Post #66, American Legion, both of Hiawatha.  She was busy with various church and card clubs; the PTA when the boys were younger; and was cub scout den mother troop #7.    In her spare time, she was cooking and baking.  

Survivors include her three sons:  James Joseph Jimeson of Nebraska City, NE, John Lloyd Jimeson of Hartsel, CO, Mark Charles Jimeson of Hiawatha, KS; six grandchildren:  Kimberly Lucero of Clovis, NM, Melanie (Brett) Schnitzer of Nebraska City, Christopher (Crystal) Jimeson of Highland, KS,Michelle (Jarrod) Owen of Sidney, IA, Desiree’ (Jeff) Wede of Carrington, ND, Sarah (Jordan) Lunsford of Falls City, NE; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings:  Elmer John Wissman, Mary Carr, Vernal Wissman, and Margaret Herbster.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon Thursday, June 13, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha.  Father Dan Gardner will be the celebrant.  Interment will follow at the Hiawatha Cemetery.

Patricia Louise Pospisil, 84, of Rushville, MO died Thursday, June 6, 2019 at the Mosaic Life Care Center, St. Joseph, MO.

Pat was born on Nov. 10, 1934 in Atchison Kansas the daughter of Emmett and Pauline (Drakely) Jackson. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1952. She was married to Barney Pospisil in Sept., 1954. They were later divorced. Pat owned and operated “Pat’s Steakhouse for over 47 years. She had attended St. Joseph’s Church, Atchison, was a member of the Atchison YMCA and attended Swim Class. She was a member of the NRA and enjoyed bowling, gambling, camping, and fishing. The annual “Testicle Festival” at Pat’s Steakhouse every year was a fund raiser for Shiners Crippled Children’s Fund.

Survivors include four sons: Randy (Rita) Pospisil, Weston, MO, Tom (Patty) Pospisil, Birchtree, MO, Barney Pospisil,Jr., Rushville, Mo, and Dennis Pospisil, Weston, MO, a daughter, Patricia “Mickie” (Chris) Burton, Birchtree, MO, a sister, Polly Jones, Atchison, KS, twelve grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Her parents, three brothers; Bud, Jerry, and Butch Jackson, and three sisters; Mary Frances Moore, Margie Larison, and Linda Jackson preceded her in death.

Larry J. Siebenmorgen, 79, Atchison, Kansas died Friday, June 7, 2019.

Larry was born October 29, 1939, in Stranton, Nebraska, the son of Hugo and Irene (Kletchka) Siebenmorgen. He attended St. Benedict’s Elementary and graduated from Maur Hill Prep School.

He and Rita M. Heintzelman were united in marriage on September 14, 1963, at St. Lawrence Church in Easton, Kansas.

Larry was employed at Blair Milling and Elevator Company and he sold real estate for Wilson Realty, Inc. Larry was a licensed auctioneer for approximately 20 years for Staley-Dierking Auctioneers. He retired from Philip H. Jones Company after working as a manufacturer’s rep for 27 years.

Larry was a member of St. Benedict Parish, a member of Sacred Heart Council #723 of the Knights of Columbus, a Fourth Degree Member of the William T. Jochems Knights of Columbus Council #1716. He was also a member of the Elks Fellowship Club and Ducks Unlimited. Larry enjoyed hunting, trapping, carpentry, and anything involving his grandsons.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rita Siebenmorgen, a son, Matt (Amy) Siebenmorgen, Atchison, KS; a daughter, Mona (Jim) Ervin, Atchison, KS; four grandsons, Ben and Luke Ervin, Cole and Abe Siebenmorgen, one great granddaughter, Sophia Ervin, all of Atchison; two brothers, Gary (JoAnn) Siebenmorgen, Easton, KS, John (Rhonda) Siebenmorgen, Easton, KS; and three sisters, MaryAnn (John) Rosencutter, Topeka, KS, Kay (Eugene “Butch”) Faught, Effingham, KS, Patricia Hetz, Atchison, KS, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and three brothers-in-law, Jerry Heintzelman, Wayne Hetz, and John Rosencutter.

Catherine E. "Cathleen" Reed, 78, of Soldier, died Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

She was born April 3, 1941 at Holton, KS, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Beightel Kennedy.  She graduated from Holton High School in 1959 and received her nursing degree from St. Mary's College in Leavenworth. 

After nursing school Cathleen worked at the Holton Hospital.  She later moved to Billings, Montana and worked as a nurse there before moving back to the Holton area.  She again worked at the Holton Hospital before moving to the Jackson County Health Department, working first as a nurse and then as the Director.  She retired in 2003 after twenty-three years of service to the health department.

She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton and the Altar Society at the church.  She played the organ at St. Dominic and at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church for many years.  She was a founding member, board member, and former director of the Jackson County Friends of Hospice.  She was very active with the Holton Community Hospital, currently serving on the board of directors of the hospital and the hospital foundation, very active on the steering committee for the building expansion, and a member of the Hospital Auxiliary.  Cathleen was also a member of the Jackson County Historical Society, the East Grant Unit and had been a long time Open Class Superintendent with the Jackson County 4-H Fair.

She married Dale Reed on September 8, 1973 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton.  He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Cody Utz (Aaron), Holton and Kitty Reed-MacDonald (Ray), Montrose, CO; a brother, Joe L. Kennedy (Kathy), Soldier; a sister, Betty Jo Howells (Bart), Dillon, MT; and four grandchildren, Grace, Isaac and Preston Utz, and Dayle MacDonald.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 12th at St. Dominic Catholic Church.  Burial will follow in Mt. Galen Doyle Hisey, 83, of Atchison, KS died at his home on Friday, June 7, 2019 surround by his family.

Galen was born on Oct. 8th, 1935 in Lenora, KS the son of Everett E. and Edna M. (Thompson) Hisey. He graduated from Hill City High School in 1954. He attended Garden City Junior College and received his BS degree in Education from Fort Hays State University in 1959. He earned his Master’s Degree from Emporia State University in 1970. Mr. Hisey was a teacher for 38 years and was a coach for 46 years. He taught at Morrowville High School for 2 years, Vermillion High School 1 year, Valley Falls High School for 15 years and ACCHS for 20 years. Galen was a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church. He enjoyed working in his yard, attending KSU Football Games, working crossword puzzles, fantasy football, coaching, and woodcarving. Galen was devoted to this family and loved his grandchildren dearly.

He was married to Louise Turner in July 1958 but they were later divorced. He was married to Barbara (Schrader) Blide on Aug 1, 1986 at Cummings UMC. Barbara survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter Janet R. Annie Elizabeth (Combs) Gutknecht, 89, of Sabetha, KS passed away peacefully Thursday, June 6, 2019 surrounded by loved ones, at the Sabetha Manor.

Annie was born March 20, 1930 in Moreland, Georgia the daughter of Eugene and Zanna (Moulton) Combs. The family moved around a lot during Annie’s growing years. Her parents were migrant workers moving with the harvesting of different crops. She often talked about picking in the cotton fields or harvesting apples. Annie met her husband Max in 1947. They married December 9, of the same year in Reno, Nevada. Max’s family lived in Kansas, making the move to Albany was a logical choice. Annie had an eighth-grade education as was normal for the times. She was a homemaker and mother of twelve children that kept her very busy.

Annie enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, gardening, and playing bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Max; two sisters, baby Velma Lois and Helen Reynolds; two brothers, Bobby and Gene Combs; and a son, Kenneth Gutknecht.  

Annie is survived by a sister Carolee Simmons and a brother John Combs both of St Joseph, Mo. Her legacy continues in her children, Bill (Susan) Gutknecht of Idaho, Linda (Stephen) Landry of California, Dale (Mary) Gutknecht of Bern, Donald (Judi) Gutknecht of Louisiana, Lois (Bob) Drury of Lawrence, Hugh Gutknecht of California, Lonnie Gutknecht of Valley Falls, Connie (Eric) Gish of North Carolina, Wanda Stokley of Nevada, Samuel Gutknecht and Sarah (Kevin) Wiltz both of Sabetha, and her 25 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, and nephews.

Verlas Mae (Mogler) Meyer, 88, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Life Care Center of Seneca surrounded by her family.

Verlas was born on December 11, 1930 in West Bend, Iowa the daughter of Samuel and Tillie (Gerber) Mogler. She lived on a farm near Algona, Iowa until the age of 8 when the family moved to a farm east of Whittemore, Iowa. Verlas graduated from Whittemore High School in May 1948. After school she moved to Sabetha, Kansas in August of 1951. There she worked for various people helping with household duties and caring for children. Starting in 1952, Verlas worked as a telephone operator until new advancements made her job unnecessary in 1958.

On October 23, 1955 she married Carl Meyer, Jr. in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Bernice and Ernest Erickson in Algona, Iowa. Verlas and Carl made their home on a farm near Woodlawn. There they raised their two children. She worked by her husband’s side for over 50 years helping care for livestock and crops. This past fall they celebrated 63 years of marriage.

Verlas enjoyed raising chickens and selling the eggs, tending her garden, canning her crops from the garden, embroidery, and sewing for her family. She also enjoyed activities that took her off the farm as well, such as bowling and club. She joined the Woodlawn Extension Club in June of 1962, and served as an active member for 43 years. She was also a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church. As time went on she enjoyed trips to visit her family in Iowa.

Verlas was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Marvin, Robert and Duane; and her sisters, Arlene Esslinger, Bernice Erickson, and Lucinda Berninghaus.

Verlas is survived by her husband Carl; two children, Gary (Deb) Meyer of Sabetha, and Nancy (Wayne) Osterhaus of Seneca; her siblings, Esther Day, Jeanette Montgomery, Kenneth (Liz) Mogler, Mildred (Dean) Rickie, Calvin (Joyce) Mogler, Arthur (Eula) Mogler, and Ruth (Ken) Kerber; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A Visitation will be held Sunday, June 9, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha, Kansas. Funeral service will be Monday, June 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Woodlawn Baptist Church with Pastor Duane Tramp officiating.

Sister Mary Owen Leutloff, OSB, 100, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Thursday, June 6, 2019, at the monastery. The vigil service will be Tuesday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there Wednesday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m.

Sister Mary Owen was born in St. Anne, Ill., the only child of Mary and James Leutloff.  After graduating from St. Patrick High School in Kankakee, Ill., she worked as a parish secretary and sacristan in Kankakee, Ill., and then as a bookkeeper in Hanover, Kan. She entered the Benedictine community of Mount St. Scholastica in January of 1946. She earned a master’s degree in elementary administration from Northwest Missouri State University and taught at parish schools in Defiance, Ia.; Atkinson, Neb.; and in Kansas at Westphalia, Valley Falls, Horton, Topeka, Wamego, Seneca, Marysville and Kansas City for over 40 years.  With her love of gardening and science, she worked in the monastery maintenance department after retiring from teaching, and also assisted in the monastery library. Her other interests included reading and various needlecrafts. She was able to enjoy a celebration of her one hundredth birthday, April 29th of this year.

William R. Kinsey, II, 47 years old, a resident of Atchison, Kansas passed away Monday, June 3, 2019.

Kinsey, as he was known, was born November 5, 1971 in Sanford, Florida the son of William R. Kinsey and Betty R. (Talley) Kinsey. During his career in the military he earned several degrees, later in life earning his Doctorate in Aeronautical Engineering.  

He and the former Susan E. Hegarty were united in marriage on December 10, 2016.  

Kinsey served in the United States Navy as a submariner from November 7, 1990 to July 14, 1999. He loved what he did in the military and was very proud of his service to his country.  After exiting the service, he built, owned and operated KTSI, an engineering firm providing services to our nation’s Defense Department.

He truly loved his children and the time he was able to spend with them.  There was no hobby that he would not try; and if he decided to try something there was no doubt he would soon master that.  

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Susan Kinsey, Atchison, KS; two sons, William Marshall Kinsey, Greenville, SC, Sean Fisher Kinsey, Sarasota, FL; his mother, Betty R. Miller; a brother, Johnny Waycaster; sisters, Joan Clute and Rita Arnold.  

He was preceded in death by his father, William R. Kinsey, and his daughter, Aleigha K. Kinsey.

Densel Dale Fankhauser, 93, of Tecumseh was born on March 14, 1926 to Jacob and Goldie (Moore) Fankhauser in DuBois, Nebraska, and was the only child. 

He attended the DuBois elementary and high school and graduated in 1944.  In 1943, at age 17 with permission from his parents and with full credits from his senior year in high school, he enlisted in the Navy V-12 Flight Training Program. He was sent to Peru State College where the training program was held at that time.  After attending a full year the war was winding down and it was phased out.  Densel was sent to the Great Lakes Training Base and from there was sent on a troop train which stopped at the North Platte Canteen on its way to San Diego.  From San Diego he was sent to Pearl Harbor and served a short time on the air craft carrier, Siboney.  He was chosen to work in the ComServPac office of the fleet headquarters and remained there until he was discharged on June 10, 1946.  He processed the returning of former prisoners of war of the Japanese.

Densel was married to Irene Caroline Russell on June 30, 1946 in DuBois, Nebraska at the home of her grandmother, Caroline Koester.

In September of 1946 they moved to Lincoln where he enrolled in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Nebraska and graduated in midterm of 1949-50.  After graduation they returned to DuBois and started a small drug store.   In 1954 Densel was called to Colwell Drug in Pawnee City where he worked until 1957 when they moved to Tecumseh to work for the Nachtigall Drug Store.  In 1969, they purchased Chief Drug and he worked there until they sold it in 1991. He continued to work there part time until July of 2015 when he retired completely, having spent 65 years in the profession of pharmacy.

He was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (Maple Grove) for over 60 years and served as treasurer of the church board at various times. Densel was also the first president and co-founder, along with Rev. Fred Kruse, of the former Maple Grove nursing home.  He served on the Nebraska Pharmacist’s Association board of directors and was a member of the National Association of Retail Druggists and attended many conventions.  Densel was a past president of the Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce and was currently a member of the Tecumseh Architectural board.  He was a member of both the VFW and American Legion and was often called upon to serve as an honor guard.

He was a member of the committee which constructed the new Veteran’s Memorial in Tecumseh.  He assisted in the setting up of the Avenue of Flags on the courthouse square as long as he was able and was always willing to help when called upon. Densel was a regular with the Action Center morning coffee group.

Densel enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his time in the yard and garden.  He enjoyed making stained glass items and oil painting in earlier years.  He loved to collect pharmacy and Rexall related memorabilia.  He loved to travel and over the years took his family on vacations around the country.

In later years Densel and Irene traveled around the United States, Europe and the Middle East.  He enjoyed escorting visiting VFW and Legion officers in his red Corvair convertible in the county fair parades.  He was always concerned about the community and gave back in any way he could.

Densel loved his family and enjoyed being with them.  Surviving him is his wife, Irene, three daughters, Charlotte Grof, Janet Stephenson, and Carolyn Coldwell (David), grandchildren, Scott Grof (Stacy), Susan Johnson (Chad), Sarah Jazbec (Nate), Caroline Marciano (Christopher), Cassandra Heath (Bryan).  Great grandchildren, Tyler and Nathan Grof, Koko, Norah, Merritt, Holland and Jewel Johnson, Masheala and Kaiden Maynez and Tayah Kephart, Kathyrn and James Marciano, and Eva and Laura Heath.  He had many cousins and extended family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, infant twin daughter, Cheryl Lynn, born at rest and son-in-law, James Stephenson.

   Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2019 at the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (Maple Grove) Church, rural Tecumseh, Nebraska with Pastor Eric Biehl officiating.

Robert H. “Bobby” Harms, 82, of Pemberton Village Apartments of Hiawatha, died May 18, 2019.

He was a laborer doing construction work, and bridge repair. Recent years before retiring, he worked for a watershed district.

Survivors include his Padonia friends.

Gene was born on August 12, 1952 in Leavenworth, KS the son of Wiliam J. and Charlotte Imogene (Wright) Higley. He graduated from Jefferson County North High School in 1970. He worked as a sales representative for Foley Equipment Company, formerly Martin Tractor in Topeka for over 33 years, retiring in 2017. He had attended the Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church, a member of the Elks Club, and Farm Bureau. Gene enjoyed farming, putting up hay, and traveling.

He was married to Phyllis Loroff on Oct. 5, 1974 and they were later divorced. Survivors include a daughter, Seanna Lynn Higley, Roeland Park, KS, a brother, James “Jim” A. Higley, Nortonville, KS, and a sister, Judy Lehew, Topeka, KS. His parents, and brother, Mike Higley preceded him in death.

Kimberly was born on November 11, 1972 in Abilene, Texas, the daughter of Mary Johanna Betts and James E. Dixon. She attended St. Joseph’s Elementary, graduated from Atchison High School in the class of 1991 and then graduated from Pittsburg State College, Pittsburg, Kansas, with a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology.

She was employed as a Clinical Psychologist for the Parsons Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. She enjoyed reading, walks on the Wichita River Walk, music and the Renaissance Festival. She belonged to the Society of Creative Anachronism.

Survivors include her mother and step-father, Johanna (Dennis) Thummel, Cameron, MO; father and step-mother, James (Lynn) Dixon, Atchison, KS; brother, James Stewart, Atchison, KS; sister, Jennifer Knight, Leavenworth, KS; a close friend, Lisa Pennington, Colorado; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and her cat, Savel.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents and an uncle, Louis Betts.

“Jack” John W. Monson, of Laurie, MO/Winter Haven, FL, formally of Wolcott, NY/Horton, KS: passed peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, May 23, 2019 of an unexpected and short illness.

John is predeceased by his parents Daniel and Grace (Weber) Monson, and eight brothers and sisters; Maxine (Hisle), Joyce (Cheek), Kenneth, Virgil, Danny, Curtis, Stan, and Dale Monson, and wife KarenKay (LeVecchi) Monson.

John was born in Horton, KS on October 29, 1944. John served in the US Army Airborne Division, was employed by K.M. Davies, Miller Brewing Company, High Falls Brewing Company (Genesee Brewing), Owner/Operator of MonsonWeber Consulting, served as Mayor of the Village of Wolcott, and was an active member of many clubs and organizations like the Elks Club, Lions Club, and the Wolcott Volunteer Fire Department as an honorary member/supporter.

 John was a loving husband, father, and friend who was widely regarded as the life of the party and will be dearly missed by many. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, antique autos, and socializing with friends.

 John is survived by his beloved wife of 3 years, Pat Sinning-Monson, twin sister Judy (Monson) Cooper, son John (Amy) Monson, son Eric (Angela) Monson, son David (Katie) Monson, daughters Christine (Chris) Cook, Stephanie (Darren) Dahl, grandchildren Austin, Audrey, Emma, Jack, Addison, Damien, Jaxon, Kaiden, Mason, Cambree and by loving step-children Troy Glynn, Travis Glynn, Shawna Glynn, and Josh Sinning as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Roland E. Smith, 77, of Seneca, Kansas peacefully passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Crestview Nursing and Residential Living in Seneca.

Roland was born on April 29, 1942 to John A. Geneva L. Peck Smith in Morrill, Kansas.
Roland attended Reserve High School and graduated in 1960. He also attended Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln, Nebraska. Following his schooling he worked as a bookkeeper in Omaha, Nebraska.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 15, 1963. Roland took his basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Following his basic training he went to Ft. Lee Virginia to attend advance training. Roland was assigned to the 11th Armored Cavalry, Regensburg, Germany. Roland returned to the states on completion of his tour in Germany and volunteered for duty in Viet Nam. He served from 1965 to 1969 in Viet Nam with the 525th Military Intelligence Group. He returned to the states and was assigned to the NATO missile Firing Installation in Crete, Greece. Roland separated from service on July 31, 1971 with disability.

Roland’s decorations received while in service was Army Commendation Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster) Good Conduct medal, National Defense Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry, Presidential Citation and Meritorious Unit Citation. Roland was awarded the Purple Heart and was discharged after his stay in the hospital from Ft. Sam.

He was a lifetime member of the DAV Chapter in Marysville, a lifetime member of the Sabetha V.F.W., a member of the Elks Lodge in Falls City, Nebraska, Moose Lodge in Marysville and Eagles Lodge in Marysville.

Roland had several interests in his life time which included Bingo, where he ran the American Legion Bingo in Seneca, cards, collecting coins and trips to the casino.   

Roland is survived by his wife, Lavada of the home; step children, Ronnie Wolfgang of Home City, Linda Schreiber of Home City, Steven Wolfgang of Cunningham, Kansas, Terry Wolfgang, of Colorado and Robert Wolfgang of Seneca; three sisters, Rose Fritch of Humboldt, Nebraska, Margaret Pallesan of Topeka, Kansas and Martha Crowford of Falls City, Nebraska;  step grandchildren; step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
 
Funeral Services will be Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 10 AM at Lauer Funeral Home; with a visitation being held one-hour prior, from 9-10AM.  Burial will be in the Morrill City Cemetery.

Donald Burge Jr. passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Davis Funeral Chapel, in Leavenworth.

Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M., Wednesday at Davis Funeral followed by a graveside service at 2 P.M. at Sumner Cemetery, Atchison County, Kansas.

Sondra Sue Benjamin, age 68 of Auburn, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019 at her home in Auburn.

Survivors include her husband Eric “Rick” of Auburn; daughter and son-in-law Stacey and John Hayes of Lincoln; grandson Aiden; sister Peggy Erskine of Creston, IA; brother and sister-in-law Gary and Suzanne Waddell of Henderson, NV; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A memorial service will be Saturday, June 8, 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn.  Burial of ashes will be at a later date at Sheridan West Cemetery at Auburn.  Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to Hearts United for Animals.

Lindbergh (Lindy) Edgar Bell, age 91, died May 11, 2019 at his home in Rancho Mirage, CA after a short illness. 

He was born August 18, 1927 in White Cloud, KS to Charles E. Bell and Josephine Marie Sisto.  He grew up in White Cloud and Highland, KS.  His father was a farmer and ran a creamery in both White Cloud and Highland.  His mother was a beautician and ran a beauty shop out of her home.

Lindy was in the Marine Corps during the time of the Korean War.  

He graduated from Kansas State University in 1951 with a degree in physical education.  He taught and coached for one year at Lucky High School and then went to work in the Los Angeles, CA school district as a physical education teacher and basketball coach.  He loved basketball.  

He retired at age 59 and, after retirement, moved to Montreal, Canada for one year hoping to learn French. He always said he didn’t learn one word and came home.  Whenever he visited the Midwest, the first thing he would do is order a T-bone steak or Kansas City strip, saying it was the only place he could get a “real” steak.  He loved and owned several sport cars. Lindy was extremely funny and would tell colorful and exciting stories that would keep the listener entertained for hours.   

Lindy loved Kansas State University and funded a significant gift to name the position of the head of the Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University. He is also leaving his vast art collection to the department.  

Survivors include his nephews Bob Bell and Bill Bell  and great nieces and nephews.

 A graveside service is planned at Highland Cemetery in Highland, KS. on June 14, 2019 at 11:00 am.  Pastor Tom Carter will officiate.  Military honors to be a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Harold Eugene Howard of rural Hiawatha died Friday, May 31, 2019, in Hiawatha, KS.

Gene was born June 23,1927, to Hollis and Velma (Jaynes) Howard. He married Virginia “Rose” Rockey in October 1945.

Before settling down and raising his family, Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

Gene and Rose raised three boys - Gary, Charles and Don - on the family farm. He continued farming the land - even after retiring from Flair Fold, where he worked in the maintenance department for 14 years. He, also, continued his service to his country as a member of the National Guard.

Gene loved traveling. Some of his most notable destinations included Ireland and Scotland and his dream trip - riding his Harley Davidson to Alaska. He and Rose spent may winters in Brownsville, Texas, camping. Camping was another passion of Gene’s. He and Rose belonged to the Traveling TeePees camping club.  He enjoyed riding motorcycles - passing his love of riding to his entire family. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the American Motorcycle Association, the Hiawatha Saddle Club and the Hiawatha Masonic Lodge (which he belonged to for more than 60 years).

He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Don and Charles, daughters-in-law Terry and Betty and an infant great granddaughter.

Gene is survived by his wife Rose of the home; son Gary and Kathy Howard of Hiawatha; grandchildren Tammy Howard, Charla Adcock, Scott Howard, Hollis Howard, Patrick Howard, Keri Bestwick, Robert Howard and Stephanie Boothe; 17 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 410 Hiawatha Ave in Hiawatha, with Reverend Andrew Finch officiating.

 The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the church.

Interment will follow at Mt Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha, with military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Fr. Donald Redmond, OSB, 89, a monk of St. Benedict’s Abbey died Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Abbey.

Vespers for the dead will be Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 7:00 P.M. at St. Benedict’s Abbey Church. Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. also at the Abbey Church.
