Donald Edward Utz was born August 11, 1930, just northwest of Highland, one of three children of Lawrence Lee and August (Gussie) Elder Utz and had lived near Highland all of his life. 

He died Friday evening, October 30, 2020, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha with family by his side.

Don attended Arnold country school prior to graduating from Highland High School with the class of 1948.  He graduated from Highland Junior College in 1950 before graduating from Kansas State University at Manhattan in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture engineering and architecture.  While he was at K State, he served in the Marine Corps Reserve for a year.  He then enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953 and served until 1956, serving during the Korean Conflict, discharged at the rank of sergeant.  He returned to Highland where he farmed for a few years.  Don later worked many years as a mechanic, for his sister and brother in law, Beverly & Tom Miller with Miller Implement, Highland John Deere dealer, until it closed in 1989.  He then did farm work for Harold Sommers northeast of Robinson for a number of years before retiring.

Don was a dedicated member of Highland United Methodist Presbyterian Church where through the years, was active on the Church board.  He, along with his mother, were very faithful about attending Bible study groups.  He was a longtime member of Smithton Lodge #1, AF&AM of Highland, and had delivered meals on wheels to Highland area residents for many years.  Don volunteered many years to help put up and take down flags at the Highland Cemetery for Memorial Day observance.  He was an active member at Highland Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include his sister Beverly Miller, his twin sister Donna Keebler (Keith) all of Highland, with numerous nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, brother in law Tom Miller, nephew Tim Keebler, great-nephews Nathan Keebler and Matthew Keebler.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesday where the family may be present at times.

A Celebration of Don’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, at the Highland United Methodist-Presbyterian Church, with Kevin Rea and Jerry Petering officiating.  Masonic Honors a courtesy of Smithton Lodge #1.  Military honors will be a courtesy of the Marine Corps, and Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Joseph Gary “Joe” Anderson, 80, of Topeka, KS, passed away Friday, October 30, 2020 at Brighton Place West in Topeka, KS. He was born October 20, 1940 in Portland, OR, the son of Irwin Winford and Louise Annette (Robinson) Anderson.

Joe graduated from Topeka High School in 1958. He proudly served in the United States Army as a medic during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Era; becoming disabled. Joe lived in the Topeka for most of his life.

He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Topeka.

Survivors include 2 nieces, Sharon J. Anderson and Vicki Jo Armstrong (Mike) both of Mayetta, KS; nephew, Alan S. Anderson of Kansas City, KS; sister-in-law, Mary Gerhardt-Anderson of Mayetta and many great-nieces and nephew.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert A. Anderson.

William “Bill” Marfice, 93 of Table Rock, Nebraska passed away on Friday, October 30, 2020 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Journey House.  He was born on February 4, 1927 to John and Helen (Stanczyk) Marfice in Tecumseh, Nebraska.

Bill graduated from Table Rock High School in 1944. He joined the Army in September 26, 1946 to 1952. He was Army Corp of Engineers 489.

Bill married Elizabeth Rose Eis at St. John Catholic Church in Table Rock on November 26, 1955, to this union three children were born, Susan , Roland, and Michael.

Elizabeth passed away July 31, 2010. 

After the military he farmed and was a truck driver and ran a sawmill for 24 years.  

He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Bill was on the Table Volunteer Fire Department, member of the American Legion  Brown Hays post #289, 59 years, and VFW Commander. 

He liked Gardening and loved watching football especially the Huskers, and loved working with  his cattle. 

He was proceeded in death by his parents John and Helen Marfice, wife Betty, sons, Roland and Michael Marfice, his siblings, Eleanor Harper, Louise Spencer, Paul Marfice, Richard Marfice, Donald Marfice, Joyce Nieto,  son-in-law Thomas Rutledge.

Isla Mae Gates Vogel, 98, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at her home with family by her side. She was born October 3, 1922 in Havensville, KS, the daughter of Ora Alpheus and Isla Victoria (Goodman) Graves.

Isla Mae graduated from Wheaton High School in 1942, she enjoyed playing basketball, high school plays and she also played the piano for many recitals. After high school, she attended NYA School (trade school) in Topeka studying silk screening.

In the early 1940’s Isla Mae worked in Portland, OR as a secretary at shipyards. She lived in Topeka since 1948, working at National Reserve Life Insurance Company and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. For 10 years, she worked for H & R Block, 20 years for Floyd’s Daylight Donuts and 6 years for Bakers Dozen. She also worked Lane Street Station and helped her son, Craig, at Sneakers Night Club for a few years.

She was a member of the Congregational Church in Wheaton, KS; serving as secretary in the 1940’s. She was also a member of multiple bowing leagues in Topeka for many years.

 Isla Mae married Robert Gene Jacobs, they divorced. She married Kenneth Dean Gates, they divorced. She married Henry “Hank” Daniel Vogel, they divorced.

Survivors include 3 sons, Craig Gates (Catherine) of Topeka, KS, Roy Gates of Huntsville, TX and Ronnie Gates of Topeka, KS; brother-in-law, L.D. Sloop of Holton, KS; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her sister, Lois Sloop; brother, Ora “Dale” Graves and sister-in-law, Lorna Mae Graves.

Richard “Rick” Henry Weidmaier, 68, of Wathena, Kansas, died at home unexpectedly of a heart attack on October 28, 2020. 

Rick was born on April 1, 1952 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Arthur and Betty Weidmaier. He attended St. Patrick’s and graduated from Christian Brothers in 1970. He married Jeanie (Hewins) on May 17th, 1980. 

Rick worked various jobs throughout his life including Kentucky Fried Chicken, Affiliated Foods and Acme Vending. He retired in 2013 and spent his days fishing, driving his dog Hoss around and enjoying his favorite sports teams. He was also a celebrated cook and caterer, winning many awards for his BBQ including the American Royal. Friends and family always looked forward to his signature “Rachel” sandwiches. Ask anyone who knew him, and all would agree that Uncle Rick loved life and enjoyed the ride. 

Rick is survived by his wife Jeanie, son Eric (Bailey); Brothers: David (Kennetha), John (Sandy), Mark (Susan), Danny (Connie); Sisters: Lisa (Earl) Puett, Diane (Jeff) Kuenne. He also had many close family members including numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. 

The Rosary will be Friday night at 5:30 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wathena, Kansas. The visitation will follow from 6:00-8:00 pm. The funeral mass is also at the church on Saturday at 10:00 am.  Friends may call after 12 noon Friday.

Dean Adair Mick, Sr., 94, of Holton, KS, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2020 at his home with family by his side. He was born August 29, 1926 in Holton, KS, the son of Otto Robert and Leona (Goodman) Mick.

Dean worked for United Manufacturing, Hill’s and as a machinist at Seymour’s all in Topeka. He also worked as a custodian for USD 336, retiring in 1991.

He married Marie Antill, they later divorced.

Dean married Mary M. Moore on June 1, 1968 in Holton; they celebrated over 52 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife Mary of the home; a daughter, Gail Taliaferro (Jerry) of Holton; 4 sons, Francis Mick (Kathy) of Derby, KS, Keith Mick (Kathy) of Circleville, KS, Rowdy Mick (Marsha) of Fairview, KS and Dean A. Mick, Jr. (Amy) of Holton, KS; 16 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded by an infant daughter, Ruth Elizabeth Mick; a son, Dennis Mick; a sister, Eunice Moore; a brother, Kermit Mick; a grandson, Jessie Mick and an infant great-grandson.

Alice G. Nielson, of Barnard, MO, died Monday at the age of 85.

Glenda Marie Thompson, 84, of Weston, MO died Saturday, October 24, 2020 at the Northcare Hospice House, North Kansas City, MO.

Glenda was born on November 10, 1935 in Winchester, KS the daughter of Fred and Musie (Jones) Ragland. She grew up in Winchester, KS attending Winchester High School. Glenda worked as an operating room technician for Jefferson County Memorial Hospital for over 30 dedicated years. After leaving the hospital, she also worked for several other surgeons in Leavenworth, KS before retiring in 2000. She was a member of the Winchester Christian Church, the Early Bird Bowling League, and Atchison Bowling Association, bowling for over 60 years including 25 State Bowling Tournaments and 20 National Bowling Tournaments. She especially enjoyed traveling; camping, but her true joy and passion were her grandchildren and especially her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three children; Rick (Rita) Thompson, Topeka, KS, Pamela (Thompson) Goodliff, Weston, MO and Tim Thompson, Lawrence, KS; a brother Larry (Peggy) Ragland, Leavenworth, KS, six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  Her parents, a brother Loren Ragland, and sisters Ellen (Jim) Perine and Betty (Alvin) Reynolds preceded her in death.

Nancy Ann Louise Brown, 79, of Wathena, KS died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020 at the Wathena Health Care, Wathena, KS.

Nancy was born October 28, 1940 the daughter of Lowell Sanford “Babe” and Rose May (Pate) Worrell. She worked for the Atchison Mop Factory before becoming a secretary for twenty-six years for Atchison Hospital and Mosaic Life Care. Nancy was a member of the Willis Christian Church. She enjoyed playing the piano for church services, mowing the lawn, gardening, sewing and cooking.

Nancy married Charles Brown on December 16, 1960, in Lamar, MO, he survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son Marc Brown, Lebo, KS, two daughters, Michelle (Robert) Harsch, Strasburg, CO, Millisa Brown, Lee’s Summit, MO, a sister, Rosie Maycroft, Atchison, KS, one grandson, Michael Harsch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Michael Brown, two brothers, Jim and Robert Worrell and three sisters, Margaret Worrell, Betty Armontrout and Doris Mawdsley.

Matthias “Matt” John Strahm Jr., 94, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2020. He was born on February 23, 1926 in Berwick, Kansas to Matthias J. Strahm and to Lena (Furrer) Strahm. Matt had an older sister, Ungela A. Strahm. Matt’s parents and sister Ungela preceded him in death. Matt was 5th and the last in the line of the direct decedents of Matthias Strahm I, one of the earliest settlers of the Bern, Kansas area. Matt’s wife of 48 years, Dorothy Joan (Platt-McNeill) also preceded him in death. Matt and Dorothy were married on April 26, 1972 in Prairie Village, Kansas. Dorothy was the widow of Leo Jake McNeill and had 3 children with him prior to marrying Matt.

Surviving are Jeannine M. Wolf (Stephen) of Loudon, Tennessee; Colin Brett McNeill (Kim) of Kokomo, Indiana and Michelle D. Koerner of Leo, Indiana. Also in the family are 8 grandchildren and their spouses: Douglas Wolf (Brynn) of Morristown, Tennessee Janet Ramick (Keith) of Sammamish, Washington; Lauren Van Wassenhove (Sandor) of Redmond, Washington; Brittany Achard (Christopher) of Carmel, Indiana and Colin Parker McNeill (Laurissa Nieto) of Newport Beach, California; Taylor Koerner (Lisa) of Fort Wayne, Indiana Austin Koerner (Ashley) of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Monica Koerner of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Matt grew up in Bern, Sabetha, Garden City and Wichita, Kansas at various times in his childhood. His parent’s home in Bern was next to the Oregon Trail that began in St. Joseph, Missouri. Matt attended Wichita High School in Wichita, Kansas and upon graduation, was inducted into the United States Army on June 27, 1944. He served in World War II in Company A of the 45th Signal and Heavy Construction Battalion in Wiesbaden, Germany as a Telephone & Telegraph Lineman and earned the rank of Private First Class by his discharge of May 22, 1946. He was qualified as a Rifle expert and earned the American Theater Ribbon, the EAMET Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Ribbon.

After the Army, Matt enrolled at Kansas State University and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Engineering, ranking 1st in his class. He began his career with a position at Black & Veatch, Consulting Engineers in Kansas City and then the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through his retirement in 1989. He subsequently accepted as position with Raytheon for 5 years from 1990 through 1998 as a designer of radar installation facilities at many second tier airports in the United States.

Before marriage, Matt enjoyed being a private pilot and took fishing trips to Canada with family and close friends, in particular Dr. Joseph Farney (DVM). He also jointly owned several private aircraft in his lifetime. Upon marriage, he still enjoyed being out-doors; camping and fishing.

Matt was baptized in the Apostolic Christian Church in Chicago, Illinois in the spring of 1973 and was a member of the Chicago congregation while he lived in Crystal Lake, Illinois with Dorothy and the children. Matt served as a Sunday school teacher and was the leader of all the Sunday school activities during their time in Crystal Lake. Matt also served many years on the Elgin Apostolic Christian Nursing Home as a Board Member.

Matt and Dorothy moved to Sabetha, Kansas in 1996 into the West Village Independent Living section of the Apostolic Christian Retirement facility. Matt and Dorothy attended the Apostolic Christian Church in Bern, Kansas and were active in the community. They supported community projects as “Meals on Wheels” drivers for the Sabetha area and local philanthropic causes such as the new wing of the Sabetha Hospital. During this time, Matt served on the Board of Highland College in Highland, Kansas and was also the President of the West Village Independent Living Association.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Sabetha Apostolic Christian Home “Nursing Home Replacement Project”. Matt and Dorothy have received outstanding care from this institution for past 7 years.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a visitation at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha on Friday, October 30, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Bern Apostolic Christian Church. The burial will be made in the Bern Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery. Edward " Ed" Navinsky , 87, formerly of Cummings, died Thursday, October 22, 2020 at F. W. Huston Nursing Center, Winchester, Kansas after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s. 

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Mooney Creek, with Father Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant.  Interment will follow in Corpus Christi Church Cemetery.  A parish rosary will be recited Friday, October 30, at 5:30 PM in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 7PM. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 28th.   Memorial contributions are suggested to Corpus Christi Church Building Fund or Jefferson County Hospice and may be left in care of the funeral home.  

Ed was born May 14, 1933, in Easton, Kansas, the son of William and Dorothy (Hampton) Navinskey.  He graduated from ACCHS in 1950.

He and Joan Schrick were united in marriage on July 9, 1951, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Mooney Creek and were married for 61 years.  Joan passed away February 13, 2013.

Ed was a farmer his entire life.  He operated a Holstein Dairy Farm until 1974.  He raised cattle, hogs, and farmed row crops. 

Ed was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks and Dairy Herd Improvement Association.  He was a Mount Pleasant Township Trustee for a number of years and he served on the ASCS County Committee.  He and Joan were presented the Soil Conservation Award in 2007.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing cards, traveling, gambling in Las Vegas, and drinking with friends.  His greatest enjoyment were his grandkids and great grandkids.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, and his daughter, Cindy Dooley.  Survivors include three sons, Mike Navinskey, Atchison, Mark Navinskey, Effingham, Scott (Lori) Navinskey, Atchison, four daughters, Terry (Ross) Montgomery, Effingham, Shelly Ludwig, Denham Springs, LA, Connie Watkins, Arlington, TX, Brenda (Randy) Dvorak, Weston MO, four sisters, Francis (Robert) Handke, Atchison, Carol (Dick) Erpelding, Atchison, Ginger (Harold) Schrick, Winchester, Janet (Ronnie) Myers, Cummings, two sister-in-laws, Frieda Navinskey, Atchison and Rita Navinskey, Nortonville, 21 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. 

Ed’s go to clothing was a pair of bib overalls therefore the family requests casual attire. 

Barbara Ann Farley, 87, retired longtime Highland College educator, died Friday morning at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, KS after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born June 27, 1933, Barb was the only daughter of Lyle and Ombra (Snapp) Benson. A lifelong area resident, she attended White Cloud High school, where she met Lewis Duane Farley. They graduated together from White Cloud in 1954. They were married on December 22, 1957 and made their home in Highland all their married life.

Barb went on to complete degrees from Highland Community College, Benedictine College, and Kansas State University. She often said she went back to school and never left. Barb was dedicated to education, teaching first in one room schools, then Highland Grade School, and finally Highland College where she ran the GED program for many years. She found helping adults to complete their high school diplomas to be particularly rewarding. After her retirement she spent many hours working in her yard and garden.

Survivors include daughter Elizabeth Farley Metzger, Tempe, Arizona, son David Wayne Farley of Highland, and brother Wayne Benson of Highland. Of the many young people Barb and Duane took under their wing, Barb was particularly fond of Kinsey (Riley) Oliphant, Excelsior Springs, MO, who she considered an adopted granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents.  

Services for Barbara, and her husband Duane who died July 24, 2018, are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, October 31, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland.  Military honors for Duane will be a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.  Inurnment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.

George J. Holthaus, 101, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 25, 2020, at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. He was transferred there with pneumonia one week earlier from Life Care Center of Seneca, where he had lived since October 2016.

George was born March 23, 1919, the firstborn to Francis and Rose Olberding Holthaus on the family homestead southeast of Baileyville. He grew up there, attended Sacred Heart School at Baileyville and helped work on the family farm. In 1940, George started to farm on his own.
On October 1, 1941, George married his “2nd grade sweetheart classmate”, Rita Reinecke, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They lived on a farm southeast of Baileyville until 1943, when they moved to a farm northeast of Seneca where they farmed for 16 years. In 1959,

George and Rita moved 1½ miles west of Baileyville where they established a new farmstead. There they continued to raise their eight children and George continued his passion for farming and also raised cattle and hogs, with Rita by his side, until they retired in 1983 and moved to a new home in Seneca. He continued to stay active in farming until 2003, by helping his children and grandchildren farm. When George’s beloved wife’s health failed, and she had to enter the nursing home, he diligently visited her every day, feeding her daily when she could no longer do so herself, for over 4 years, until her death on February 19, 2009. After her death, George continued to live on his own and enjoyed his large garden and fruit trees, canning all the fruit and vegetables they produced. As his strength and health declined, he decided to enter the nursing home in October 2016. While living at Life Care Center, he still remained active by stationary cycling every day and growing tomatoes in the courtyard. He also remained interested in farming and he loved when his family would take him country cruising to see the crops growing!

When the COVID pandemic hit in March, in his wisdom he immediately stated, “This is going to change the world”, which indeed it did. He accepted the drastic changes that it brought to his life, but for the last 8 months of his life, with the COVID restrictions, he desperately missed seeing his family and he yearned for the times he spent with them.

George was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, was very devoted to his faith, and diligently prayed the rosary every day.  In the past his memberships included being a school board member with an active role in the consolidation of USD #451 in Baileyville. He also served on the Nemaha County Coop board for nine years and on the board of the Citizen’s State Bank for several years. George was a lifetime active member of the Knights of Columbus and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed reading and playing cards, but his greatest joy was the time he spent visiting with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.   He loved reminiscing about “the good ol’ days” and shared his knowledge of history and politics with his family, who thoroughly enjoyed listening to his stories.

Besides his wife, George is preceded in death by two stillborn infants, Dennis in 1944, and Mary Ann in 1948, his son Nick, on December 22, 2011, his infant grandson, Michael Holthaus, on September 14, 1966, and a son-in-law, Roy Dalinghaus, on December 28, 2002. Also preceding him in death are siblings, Sr. Sharon Holthaus, OSB, Rita Strathman, Edwin Holthaus, and Leo Holthaus.

Surviving children include Harlan Holthaus (Georgina), Baileyville, Galen Holthaus (Sharon), Marysville, Rosalee Stimac (Bob), Seneca, Elaine O’Connor (Bill), Kansas City, MO, Betty Sudbeck (Richard), Nancy Sudbeck (Don), Joanie Holthaus (Arlyn), and daughter-in-law, Jeanne Holthaus, all of Seneca.   He will also be greatly missed by his 38 grandchildren, 84 great-grandchildren, with 2 on the way, 7 great-great-grandchildren, with 1 on the way, 10 step great-grandchildren, and 4 step great-great grandchildren. Vivina Strathman of Seneca is his only surviving sibling.

George will lie in state at Lauer Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 for public viewing and to sign the book; the family will not be present that day.

George will lie in state at Sts. Peter & Paul at 9 AM Wednesday morning.

A Rosary will be prayed at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, October 28th at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11AM at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, following the rosary.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Baileyville.

Robert Reist was born to Ed and Pauline (Hildebrand) Reist in rural Nemaha County Kansas, October 7, 1931. He passed away on Thursday  October 22, 2020 in Lincoln. He graduated from Bern High School in Bern, Kansas in 1949. He farmed with his father for three years after which he went to Navy boot camp in San Diego then to Jacksonville, Florida. He served during the Korean War from 1951-55. He attended electronics school in Millington, Tennessee. Robert made a trip around the world with WP1 Aviation Patrol Squadron based at Whidbey Island, Washington. He had enough hours in the air to circle the globe several times and finished his Navy service with squadron VP2 in Kodiak, Alaska .

Robert attended K-State after which he farmed, did carpentry for 10 years, drove semi trucks for Raston Trucking and then worked at Wenger Manufacturing in Sabetha as a buyer for 30 years, retiring in 1999.

He enjoyed helping move nieces and nephews, gardening, plowing neighbors’ gardens, tinkering and lending a hand wherever one was needed.

He is survived by sisters Nedra Eiserman, Nebraska City and Janell Sommerhalder, Steinauer, Nebraska. Nephews and nieces Mark (Renee) Eiserman, Diana (Greg) Yost, Tom (Sue) Eiserman, Sandy (Dan) Radke, Mike (Lori) Eiserman, Elizabeth (Bob) Bania, Sheila (Tom) Lynch, Nancy (John) Harms, Darrell (Tammy) Sommerhalder and Dan (Suzanne) Sommerhalder, and their families.

He was preceded in death by parents Ed and Pauline Reist and brother-in-laws Ronald Eiserman and Howard Sommerhalder.

Maxine Bauman, 89, passed peacefully to her heavenly home on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020. Her husband Ken was by her side at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, KS where they’ve resided the past 5 years. Maxine was born July 8, 1931 in Everest, KS.  She was one of 3 children born to Frank and Edna Merkel. After leaving farm life the family moved to Robinson, KS. Maxine graduated from Robinson High School in 1948. On February 18, 1950 she married Kenneth Bauman.

For over 70 years, Ken and Maxine were a team!  They were best friends supporting and loving each other.  Maxine maintained an immaculate home no matter where they lived and enjoyed decorating for every holiday.  She had a bottomless cookie jar with homemade cookies, raised 2 children, and as her children got older worked outside the home.

As Ken’s career with Union Pacific Railroad progressed, Maxine move several to several homes across Kansas including Seneca, Hays, Lawrence, and Topeka.

While living in Seneca, Maxine became an Assistant Librarian at the Seneca Public Library and taught Sunday school for the youngest children at the United Methodist Church Sunday mornings. One of her great joys was caring for babies at church and in her family.  In Lawrence, she worked for Rusty’s IGA in various positions. Maxine and Ken were active members at the Lowman Methodist Church in Topeka. She worked at Fleming Place and the gift shop at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka as a volunteer for the Women’s Auxiliary.

In later years, Maxine and Ken travelled across the United States with friends and as members of the Railroad Employee’s Club 4 in Kansas City/Topeka.  Later they became members of Club 28 in Marysville, KS.  For many years, Maxine was a member of Eastern Star.

In addition to Ken, Maxine is survived by her children Cheryl Schinze and Robert Bauman (Janet) Lawrence.  Grandchildren:  Anthony Schinze, Natalie Schinze, Chad Bauman, and Debi Bauman Cramer Great-Grandchilden:  Skyler Bauman, Mia Christiansen, and Mekenze Christiansen.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, sister Thelma Morrison, and brother Le Roy Merkel.

Private family services will be held this week thru Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.  Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Charles W. Ebel, 85, of Hiawatha, KS, passed away October 23, 2020 at Falls City, NE. He was bon May 22, 1935 at Reserve, KS to Herbert and Anna Margaret (Brecht) Ebel.

He married Ramona Fritz on March 9, 1957 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Church, north of Falls City.

Charles was raised at Reserve and graduated from Falls City High School in 1953. He attended college for 2 years at Kansas State and Peru until moving back home to farm. When married the couple established their home south of Reserve until moving to Morrill, KS and in 1968 moved to the current family farm and has lived there since. He was a lifetime farmer and raised livestock. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at 20th and Towle and member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, north of Falls City, and was an elder and held many positions within the church during his life. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his bounty with the community, he was fond of Oliver Tractors and loved sports of all types. He served in the Nebraska National Guard for 9 years. 

Charles is survived by his wife, Ramona of Hiawatha, David and his wife Debbie of Verdon, Deanne Johnson and her husband Lowell of Diagonal, IA, Bradley and his wife Sue of Hiawatha, Lori May and her husband Mark of Lincoln, NE, sisters, Marilyn McKinsey of Verdon, Carolyn Hall of Omaha, NE, nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a great-grandson, Royce Linton.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church north of Falls City with Reverend Daniel Gifford officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Patricia E. “Pat” Larson, of Horton, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, October 22, 2020, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

She was the daughter of the Melvin and Evelyn Fulk Larson and was a lifelong resident of Brown County.  She grew up  at Willis where she attended school, later graduating from high school there.

Pat worked as an operator for United Telephone Co. in Hiawatha.  She then obtained her RN degree from Stormont-Vail in Topeka, KS and worked at Tri-County Manor as director of nursing for many years prior to working at Valley Hope in Atchison until she retired.

Her faith was a very important part of her life.  She was a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Horton where she helped teach in the nursery class and with Faith and Fun Club for several years.

Pat was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed cheering them to victory in the Super Bowl.  She also loved big family gatherings and visiting with her friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, aunts and uncles.

Survivors include twin brothers Bill Larson (Marilyn) of Atchison, James Larson (Barbara) of Hiawatha, numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

Graveside funeral services are planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, October 24, at the Claytonville Cemetery, south of Hiawatha.  Pastor Tom Stone will officiate.

Patricia Marie Rodvelt, 79, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital. She was born on May 2, 1941 in Horton, Kansas, the daughter of Forrest and Elzadia Wright Crider.

Patricia was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was a former cub scout pack leader and den leader. She married Dr. G.M. Edmonds in October of 1958 in Horton, Kansas. After he passed away in 1964, she then married Paul Rodvelt on February 20, 1965 in Horton, Kansas. Paul preceded her in death on December 4, 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet (Mike) Bowen of Horton, Kansas; three sons, Greg (Gretchen) Rodvelt of Horton, Kansas, Rich (Tonya) Rodvelt of Horton, Kansas and Brian (Rhonda) Rodvelt of Everest, Kansas; five sisters, Verda Jacobsen of Plano, Texas, Nancy Crider of Horton, Kansas, Jean Banks of Horton, Kansas, Cathy Crider of Holton, Kansas and Terri Allington of St. Joseph, Missouri; two brothers, Wayne Crider of Newton, Kansas and David Crider of Horton, Kansas; eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Kelly, two sons, Jason and Randy, three sisters, Verla Crider, Rita Crider and Yvonne Fagler and a grandson, Michael Bowen.

Vera "Faye" Baker, 70, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at the St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born on August 26, 1950 in Severance, Kansas the daughter of Marion and Nellie Wilson George. Faye graduated from Midway High School in 1968. She was a member of the Horton United Methodist Church. She was employed as a Data Specialist for Dekra Safety until she retired. She married David Phelan to this union was born one daughter, Amy and a son Kevin. They were later divorced. Faye then married Dale Baker on May 25, 1994 in Miami, Oklahoma. Dale preceded her in death on November 7, 2006.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, son, Kevin, three brothers, Keith, Bill, Richard, two sisters, Linda and Wilma.

She is survived by a daughter, Amy Guliford; two step-sons, Allen (Brenda) Baker and Terry (Samantha) Baker; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; siblings, Loree (Jay) Christensen, Tom George, Mary Ellen Wood, Larry George, Gary (Re) George, Charlie (Renee) George and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arvelee  Church, 84, of Highland, KS formerly of Baltimore MD, and Lewisburg, WV died on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020 at the Mosiac Life Center, St. Joseph, MO.

Arvelee was born on Nov. 8, 1935 in Renick, West Virginia the daughter of John and Sarah E. (Scott) Brown.  She worked for Martin-Marietta Aerospace, Baltimore, MD soldering electronic circuit boards for the space program. She worked her way up to the Soldering instructor and supervisor.   She was a member of the Southern Baptist faith and enjoyed gardening, working on cars, cooking, playing shuffleboard, battleship and aggravation board games and electronics.

She was married to Joseph W. Conard on Dec. 8, 1955. They were later divorced. She was married to Charles S. Church on May 22, 1965, they were later divorced. 

Survivors include two sons: Joseph C.  Conard, Horton, KS and Rex A. (Jackie) Conard, Dixon, MO, two daughters Beverly ( Rick) Bilderback, Atchison, KS and Pamela D. Church, Fleetwood, NC, two brothers Ralph (Beulah) Brown, Essex, MD, and Charles (Connie) Brown, La Grande, OR, a sister Helen Thomas, Winston Salem, NC, ten  grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandson.  Her parents, four brothers and three sisters , one grandson, preceded her in death.

Ann Katherine Cooper Jincks, 100, of Sabetha entered eternal rest on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

Ann was born August 31, 1920, at home in Kansas City, Kansas.  She was the oldest of four children born to Joseph and Louise Cigich Pavicic. While growing up in Kansas City, Ann attended St. John the Baptist School, on Strawberry Hill. After completing ninth grade, she went to work in The Garment Factory in Kansas City, Missouri. Ann met her first husband Harry Cooper through his mother at The Garment Factory in her late teens. They married on February 3, 1940, at St. John the Baptist Kansas City.

Ann worked in Kansas City’s Bomber Plant, building planes for the war; and the couple continued to live in Kansas City until after the war. In 1945, Harry, Ann and their two children moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. While in Bridgeport, Ann ran a boarding house, until she decided to move her children back to Kansas City in 1952. Once she returned to Kansas City, she worked for General Motors, building cars. She was also employed part-time by General Electric and I.J. Eagle Printing Company.  It was at General Motors where she met her second husband, Dean Jincks. Dean and Ann were married in Oklahoma on Sept. 25, 1970.

After working at General Motors for 23 years, Ann and Dean moved to a farm in Ridgeway, Missouri. Ann and Dean enjoyed traveling around the United States. The couple also enjoyed bowling, horse racing, dog racing and going to casinos. Ann and Dean eventually moved back to Kansas City; and the couple celebrated 48 years of marriage before Dean’s death in 2018.

Ann was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; she was devoted to her faith and watched Mass and prayed the Rosary daily.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dean: her brothers, Fred Pavicic and Joseph Pavicic; and great-grandchildren, Maria Enneking and Joseph Enneking.

She is survived by her children, Harry (Virginia)Cooper, Jr of Canton, Georgia; her daughter Kathy (Chuck) Enneking of Sabetha; her sister Catherine Chontos of Kansas City, Kansas; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild..

Sandra Flohrschutz, 76, of Holton, KS, formerly of Denison, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Holton Community Hospital. She was born May 13, 1944 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of John and Luana (Logan) Davis.

Sandra graduated from Topeka West High School and graduated from Washburn University after 4 years with an Accounting Degree.

Sandra was a stewardess for Pan Am for 10 years and for 5 years she was the Office Manager for B &P Propane and Knotty Pine Oil Company. Sandra also worked for the City of Denison and helped with accounting for several small business in the area.

She was a member of Lakeview Faith Chapel.

Sandra married Barry Flohrschutz on May 19, 1974 in Topeka. They celebrated over 46 years of marriage.

Survivors include her husband, Barry of the home; a son, Willie Flohrschutz (Liz Goebel) of Shawnee, KS; sister, Debbie Harrod of Topeka, KS; 2 brothers, John Davis and Franklin Benge both of Topeka, KS and 3 grandchildren, Seth Dougan, Brayden Goebel-Lyons and Roman Flohrschutz.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Davis; mother, Luana Benge and step-father, Franklin “Speck” Benge.

Maxine "Ke-Wah-Ka-Mo-Kuah" Hinkle, 84, of the Kickapoo reservation, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2020 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital. She was born on September 4, 1936 on the Kickapoo Reservation, the daughter of Benjamin and Irene McGossie Cadue.

Maxine was a homemaker, worked for the Kickapoo Trading Post Cafe, Kickapoo Senior Citizens and the Powhattan Cafe before going to work for the Golden Eagle Casino in the housekeeping department until she retired. She first married Robert Dryer, after he passed away in 1962, she married Lee Thomas Hinkle in Miami, Oklahoma on July 29, 1966. Lee preceded her in death on July 2, 2017. She was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe, Kennekuk Church and the Kickapoo American Legion Auxiliary Post #415.

Survivors include a son, Benjamin "Bo" Dryer of Horton, Kansas; three daughters, LeAnn (Robert) Brown of Horton, Kansas, Karen Thomas of Horton, Kansas and Marichu (Tim) Oliver of Horton, Kansas; two sisters, Marlene (Elmer) Jeannotte of Horton, Kansas and Eunice Tucker of Horton, Kansas and five grandchildren.

Betty Jean Brown, 64, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2020 at the Mission Village Living Center. She was born on October 8, 1956 in Tampa, Florida, the daughter of James and Alberta Cadue Brown.

Betty "Boop" Brown aka "Aunt Betty" from the softball fields and a well-used first baseman's mitt, from the green trees and flowing green grass of the Kickapoo reservation, and the x-box playing days when it was as simple as blasting each other on the screen. She was from a simple family, yet complex during the time, with a distinction of being "off the beaten path", but rather simply misunderstood, with love and togetherness that only she brought being the pillar and link to the family. She was from "everyone else thinks their right, but I know I Am" and "I ought to just bop you". She was from the freedom of the open road on her Harley Davidson and the fact she wanted a new car every other year. She was from being truthful to fault and "you must follow her rules under her roof", but always had the best interest in mind for someone and cared more than she showed it. She was from Florida and the military family of James and Alberta, but found her own footing in Brown County while eating fried bread and corn soup and being Aunt Betty for more than just family. From earning the rank of sergeant from the Brown County Sherriff's Department, and collecting an assortment of fun "toys" through the uphill battle called life and having a work ethic that is tough to match, she succeeded. From "just don't get on her bad side" to the amazing stories she told and the loving hugs she would give, you knew she loved you and you knew it was real. From the simple things in life to saying it like it is, you shall be missed and forever remembered. We love you "Aunt Boop" !!

She is survived by a brother, Lincoln Brown of Horton, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gordon Brown.

Harold E. Mosser Jr., 84, of Elwood, Kansas died Saturday, October 17, 2020 at his home.   

Harold was born on April 3, 1936 in Elwood, Kansas to Harold “Edward” and Veda Mae (Smith) Mosser Sr..  He graduated from Elwood High School and lived most all of his life in Elwood.  Harold had worked for Seitz in St. Joseph, owned and operated the Mobil Service Station in Elwood, then worked and retired from Boehringer’s in St. Joseph.    

Harold is a member of the Wathena Masonic Lodge #64 AF & AM, Moila Shrine and the Scottish Rite of St. Joseph and was in the Cushman Unit.   

He married Mary Jean Schuman on June 10, 1955 in Savannah, Missouri.  She preceded him in death on November 25, 2007.  Harold was also preceded by his sister, Helen Jean Bennett.

      Shirley E. Nash, 70, Mound City, Missouri, died Sunday, October 18, 2020 at a St. Joseph health care center.
    Born January 5, 1950 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Leonard and Marion (Wilkinson) Cook, she was a graduate of Lafayette High School and Hillyard Technical School.
    She married Earl Nash on August 2, 1969.  They later divorced.
    Mrs. Nash had been employed in secretarial work and a cook throughout her life.  She had been employed for the Cookson Hills Children’s Ministries in Oklahoma and for Northwest Missouri Health Service in Mound City.
    She was a member of Christian Fellowship Church and was a prayer warrior.
    She was preceded in death by her parents.
    (Survivors:) her daughter, Jennifer Queener and her husband, Chad of Creston, Iowa; four grandchildren Justin Queener, USMC,  Allison, Rebekah and Kirby Queener all of Creston, Iowa.

Steve was born in Omaha to Mervin and Rita (Goodman) Stangl, and moved to Papillion as a small boy.  After graduating from Papillion High School, he worked at a number of jobs in the Omaha area.  His work reflected the ability to quickly develop wide-ranging talents.  Steve was able to perform electrical, plumbing, construction and delicate woodworking projects.  He also enjoyed working on his cars and trucks, and became an excellent gardener, especially with his roses, and the “greenies” (as he called the lawn).  Steve met his wife, Laurie, in mid-town Omaha where they worked to restore an old neighborhood cottage.  The couple later moved to Auburn where they once again worked to fix up an old farmhouse, and Steve became identified with his roses and flower beds, and the brick sidewalk he replaced around the house.  Steve was known for his love of “head-banger” music, Hamm’s and Budweiser beer, Pepsi, and manning the grill.  Quick to offer a hand when neighbors needed help, he was also known for playing ornery pranks when the opportunity arose.  
Steve is dearly missed by his loving wife; his sister Mary (PJ) Roth of Omaha; brothers: Wayne (Kelly) Stangl of Silver City, IA; Timothy (Jane) Stangl of Bennington, NE; sister-in-law Linda (Bill) Kasprzak of Van Alstyne, TX; Aunts Lea, Kay, Jolene and Eileen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Nebraska, Texas and Michigan.
A Celebration of Steve’s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2020, at the Hall Funeral Chapel, 707 15th Street in Auburn, Nebraska with Pastor Ken Tubbesing officiating.

Glenn Eldon Sanner, 86, of Fairview, Kansas went home to be with his Heavenly Father Monday morning, October 19, 2020 from the Sabetha Community Hospital.  Born on what was known as the 400 acres northwest of Morrill, Kansas, Glenn was the second of three sons to Lee and Ruth (Hollabaugh) Sanner on May 17, 1934.

Glenn loved nature and grew up a farm boy tramping the timber, hunting, fishing and trapping with his brother Melvin.  He attended Flickinger Country School, graduating from Morrill High School with the class of 1952 participating in track. Following high school, Glenn worked at Meadow Gold in Topeka.  In the spring of 1953, Glenn was one of the first employees at the Hiawatha Dairy Queen.  Over the course of his lifetime, he worked as a carpenter, helped build numerous area watershed dams driving heavy equipment, worked on the new Highway 36 as well as highways in neighboring counties, laid underground telephone lines and his dearest occupation was that of a stockman. Glenn was the twenty-fifth kidney donor in the world in 1963 at the Denver VA Hospital giving the gift of life to his brother, Gale.  He loved traveling and exploring this great country passing this love on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Glenn married his fellow classmate and lifelong sweetheart, Gloria June Money, on February 14, 1954 at the Morrill Baptist Church in Morrill, Kansas where Glenn and Gloria were members.  For a time, they were members of the Delaware Baptist Church where Glenn served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and trustee. Glenn and Gloria returned to their home church in Morrill in their later years. 

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gale Raymond and Melvin Wayne; and his infant sister, Linda Lee Sanner.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Gloria; his children, Joyce (Dana) Kesler of Fairview, Evelyn (Sherman) Dodge of Fairview, Tim (Vicky) Sanner of Willis, and Teresa (Brad) Grier of Powhattan; his seven grandchildren, Jeremy Dodge of Kansas City, MO, Travis (Charissa) Dodge of St. Joseph, MO, Zach (Jen) Kesler of Stockton, KS, Kristin (Dan) Longfellow of Broken Bow, NE, Brice (Lindsey) Sanner of Wichita, KS, Jordan (Kaitlyn) Sanner of San Diego, CA, and Nick Sanner of Madison, MS;  his eight great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Josie Sanner; his nieces and nephews, Rodney (Robin) Sanner, Randy (Mary) Sanner, Mark (Cheryl) Sanner, Stephanie (Chris) Haussler, and Robin (Mary) Sanner along with many great nieces and nephews.

A Private Family Graveside Service will be held on Friday, October 23, 2020 at the Sabetha Cemetery.  Masks and social distancing are requested. Michael Leo “Mike” Begley, 76, a longtime business owner in Atchison, Kansas, passed away October 19, 2020 at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Mass of Christian burial will be on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited on Wednesday, Oct. 21st at 6:30 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Mike was born on June 5, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Edward F. Begley and Mary Josephine (Paolucci) Begley. He attended St. Benedict’s Grade School and graduated from Maur Hill Prep School in 1962.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1967.

He and the former Margie A. Miller were united in marriage on May 4, 1968, at St. Benedict’s Church.

Mike has owned and operated Paolucci’s Deli - Restaurant and Lounge alongside his wife for over 50 years. He previously was employed with Missouri Pacific Railroad.

Mike was active in the Atchison Community; he was a member of St. Benedict Parish, the Sacred Heart Council #723 of the Knights of Columbus, Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post #6 of the American Legion, V. F. W. Post #1175, Atchison Elks Lodge and Bellevue Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf and played in countless tournaments over the years. In 2008, he was awarded the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margie Begley, of the couple’s home in Atchison, KS; two sons, Ed Begley, Mark (Amy) Begley, both of Atchison, KS; one brother, Ed (Linda) Begley, Scottsdale, AZ; and six grandchildren, Alexsha (Ryan) Lewman, Michael Begley, Scarlett Begley, Sophia Begley, Robert Begley and Stella Begley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joe Begley and a sister, Rosemary Weber.

Joseph “Joe” Edward Malone died peacefully on October 19, 2020 surrounded by family. He fought a gallant 20-year battle with cancer and recent illnesses.

He started his life as the second born child to Mary (Walsh) and John Malone on May 18, 1941 in Blaine, KS. He grew up on a farm in rural Blaine, KS, attending a one-room school until high school.  He was a 1959 graduate of Onaga High School.  He was a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame as a player on the undefeated 1958 football team. He attended Kansas State University and worked at Goodyear until he was drafted in 1963 and served two years in the Army, stationed in Germany.  He returned to Kansas State University and was one semester short of graduating with a degree in Animal Science, when he saw the ad for his current farm in Oskaloosa and decided to pursue his calling as a farmer and rancher.  He also worked as a school bus driver for the Oskaloosa School District and as a correctional officer for the State of Kansas.

He met his lifelong love, Irene Rottinghaus, at Club 36 in Maryville, KS at a wedding dance.  Their nuptials were celebrated at St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict, KS on June 24, 1967.  They settled in Jefferson County near Oskaloosa, where they lived together for 53 years. He was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council 2278, A former Jefferson County Farm Bureau Board member and Jefferson County 4-H Leader, and member of the American Legion Post 36 Big Joe will be remembered for many things, but mostly that he never met a stranger. He was a very generous soul, helping many along the way.  He was a master inquisitor; he would often meet someone for the first time and know their life story in 5 minutes.  He would offer sage advice, prefaced by saying its worth what you paid for it. He was a fan of all sports but got the most enjoyment watching grandchildren's activities. 

 Papa Joe is survived by his wife, Irene. He was the proud father of four children: Ann (Brian), Susan (Sean), Joseph (Karen) and John (Cindy). Papa treasured his 15 grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Ellen, Patricia, and Stephen, along with 20 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Francis. 

A rosary and visitation will be held Wednesday, October 21, 2020 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm at St. Theresa's church in Perry, Kansas.  A funeral mass will be held at 10:00am at St. Theresa's church in Perry, Kansas on Thursday, October 22, 2020 followed by the burial with military honors at St. Aloysius cemetery Meriden, KS.

Robert “Bob” Hanf, Sr, 82, of Atchison KS died on Sat. Oct. 17, 2020 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Bob was born on Feb. 9, 1938 in Atchison KS the son of John and Florence G. (Eubank) Hanf.  He attended St. Patrick’s Grade School and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1955. Mr. Hanf worked as a farmer and also was a Realtor, working at Century 21, then Commerce Realty, and then Colonial Realty.  Bob served as a Township Trustee, on the Atchison County Livestock Board, and assisted with the receiving of State Grants to form the Rural Water District # 6.  He enjoyed farming and raising cattle.

He was married to Geraldine K. Obermeyer on Nov. 21, 1959.  They were later divorced.  He was  married to Linda Hanshaw in 1993. They were later divorced.  Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda McDermed, Atchison, and Julie Rork, Achison, KS, a son Robert “Bob” (Julie) Hanf, JR, Atchison, KS, six grandchildren; Drew Rohlfs, Jimmy McDermed, Jonna McDermed, Blair Flinn, Brock Hanf, and K’Dee Hommertzheim and six great grandchildren.  His parents and a brother John Hanf preceded him in death.

Theodore Lawrence “Larry” Sinker, 69, of St. Joseph, Missouri died Saturday, October 17, 2020 at his home. 

Larry was born on March 20, 1951 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Theodore and Hilda (Dalsing) Sinker.  He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during Vietnam receiving a Purple Heart.  Larry also served 19 years in the Missouri Air National Guard.  He farmed, was a policeman and had worked for the US Postal Service.  Larry moved to St. Joseph in 1987. 

Larry is a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church in St. Joseph, life member of the V.F.W. Post #5531 in Wathena, Kansas,  life member of the DAV, life member of the Paralyzed Veterans and NRA.   

He married Mary Jane Mitchell, she survives of the home.  Larry was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Tedde Sinker. 

Additional survivors include daughter, Amanda Lynn Sinker of Ord, Nebraska

Theodore E. (Ted) Dappen, age 82, passed from this life on September 15, 2020 in Joplin, Missouri. Ted was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on September 2, 1938 to William E. and Irene H. (Hinshaw) Dappen. Ted graduated from Dawson High School in 1957. He married Faye Witt July 17, 1960 and to this union five children were born – Craig and Donald (twins who died in infancy), Stephen, Cynthia, and Jennifer.  They were later divorced in 1984.  Ted served in the United States Army in 1962 and 1963.  Ted was a mechanic and then farmed for several years.  He then went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1974 until his retirement.  Ted married Grace Ann on November 5, 1987.

Ted delighted in outdoor activities. Some of his favorite pursuits were farming, boating, fishing, and music just to name a few. He was an avid Cornhusker fan, cheering them to victory at every opportunity. He could often be found tinkering in his shop and trying new things. Ted was a friend to all who met him. Being a devout Christian, he offered his services to his church in many ways and was a blessing to all. He enjoyed eating breakfast at the Green Country Café.  Making trips to Harbor Freight for new tools was a favorite pastime. Above all he loved his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren deeply loved their Papa.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents and twin sons. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Grace; sons Stephen (Linda) Dappen and Cleo Reed; daughters Maryann (Sam) Beets, Cynthia (Jimmy) Bauman, Kathy (Jamie) VanStavern, and Jennifer (Jerry) Rathmann.  10 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.

A Graveside Memorial Service is open to the public and will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2020, at the Maple Cemetery in Salem, Nebraska with Pastor Andrew Chavanak officiating.  Full military honors will be conducted by the Nebraska Army Funeral Honor Guard.

Norma I. Rumold Britton, 90, of Holton, KS, formerly of Soldier, passed away Friday, October 16, 2020 at Medicalodge Jackson County. She was born May 27, 1930 in Council Grove, KS, the daughter of Clarence and Katie (Skinner) Rumold.

Norma graduated from Topeka High School. Norma and her husband, Robert, were Foster Parents for over 32 years, caring for many children over the years.

She was a member of the Soldier Christian Church, a member of American Ex-Prisoner of War (AXPOW) and Topeka V.F.W. Post 1650.

Norma married Robert Lee Britton on August 1, 1948 in Topeka, KS. He preceded her in death after 62 years of marriage, on October 5, 2010. She was also preceded in death by her foster-daughter, Julie Hyten and 1 sister, Opal Mae Rumold.

Survivors include a foster-daughter, Shirley Smith of Soldier, KS; a brother, Lloyd Rumold (Mary Jo) of Topeka, KS; a sister, Carol Smith and her care-taker, Elaine Stephenson of Circleville, KS.

Beverly Elaine Sisk (Potter) was born on February 4th, 1938 to Samuel Irvin Potter and Opal Potter (Taylor) in the White Cloud, Kansas area. On October 16th, 2020, she went to be with her Lord and Savior. Her mother died of complications at birth and her father died in a hunting accident when she was an infant. Bev was raised by her grandparents, George and Ella Taylor on their farm.

On August 22nd, 1955, she married Franklin (Sonny) Wayne Sisk. They spent their entire married life in the Doniphan County area. Their final years together were spent in Iowa Point, until Frank passed away on January 15th, 2003.
Beverly enjoyed gardening, cooking, raising sheep, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a devout Christian and enjoyed her Church family also. She always spent time reading and studying the Bible, while sharing with others the Lord’s word.

Beverly was truly a hard-working woman, amazing cook, and loved the outdoors and her grandchildren dearly. Cooking and cleaning were just a few of her specialties. She was always critiquing her dishes to ensure all was just right and couldn’t get a house any cleaner. She loved spending outdoors walking, taking care of the farm, and mushroom hunting.

Her final thirteen years were spent residing with her youngest son Mike and his wife Tammie Sisk in Highland, Kansas.

Her survivors include son Curt (Jackie) Sisk, daughter Debra Sisk and companion Greg Stewart, and son Mike (Tammie) Sisk. She had eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland from 12 noon until 6 p.m. Sunday, and after 9 a.m. Monday.  

Graveside services are planned for 2 p.m. Monday, October 19, at the Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.

Vivian D. Heideman, 90, of Seneca died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 15, 2020 at Life Care Center of Seneca.

She was born on December 31, 1929 to Henry John and Alvira Genevieve Leddy Lueb; in a farmhouse near Centralia, Kansas. The family later moved to Seneca, where they raised their four daughters—Eleanor, Virginia, Vivian and Patricia. Vivian attended school at Sts. Peter & Paul School, where she graduated in 1947. She worked as a secretary at Winterscheidt Feed Company. She was also employed by the Seneca Theatre and Ray’s IGA Grocery Store.

Vivian married John Heideman June 24, 1948; they made their home in Seneca, raising four children. They would go on to have many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The couple celebrated 41 years of marriage before John’s death. Vivian had the great fortune to remain in the same home she raised her children in, until very near the end of her life. Vivian had an irreplaceable personality. She was full of life and dedicated all her love and attention to her family. Vivian loved Christmas, baking bread, crocheting and eating sweets.

She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, Henry on December 25, 1982 and Alvira on February 10, 1985; her husband, John on October 4, 1989; a daughter, Sandra R. “Sandy” Wichman on December 22, 2015; her sisters, Eleanor Zimmerman, Pat Henry and Virginia Gudenkauf on June 23, 2014; and a grandson-in-law, Keith Strathman on January 8, 2007.

She is survived by her son, Richard (Nancy) Heideman of Omaha; two daughters, Terry (Marty) Nordhus of Seneca and Leddy (Larry) Keever of Seneca; 17 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held Friday evening, October 16th from 6-7:30 PM at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday morning, October 17, 2020 at 10 AM at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Wilfred “Willie” Ignatius Niehues, 66, of Circleville, Kansas, died of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy on October 14, 2020 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Willie was born in Seneca on February 1, 1954 to Edwin and Rosalita Renneger Niehues. Willie grew up in the Kelly community, attended St. Bede’s Grade School and graduated from Nemaha Valley High School 1972.

As a young man he helped on the family farm and was employed in Topeka at the Goodyear Plant; he devoted the rest of his life to farming.

Willie married Colette Hammes on February 4, 1978 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca KS. To this union was born two children, Nichole & Eric. The couple later divorced. Willie farmed until his health kept him from doing so; but farming was always in his heart.

Willie enjoyed hunting, fishing and catching up with his friends and family. He was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly.

Willie is preceded in death by his father, Edwin on October 1, 2018; and a brother, Michael on July 9, 2007.

Willie is survived by his children, Nicole (Patrik) Leonard of Salina and Eric (Ashley) Niehues of Fairview, Kansas; his mother, Rosie of Seneca; his four brothers, David (Anita) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Leland (Jane) of Goff, Leon (Sharon) of Huntsville, Arkansas and Dennis (Laurie) of Goff; his two sisters, Patty (Larry) Bolgar of Cleveland, Ohio and Cindy (Dan) Heideman of Wamego; a sister-in-law, Carol Niehues of Sabetha; and six grandchildren, Owen, Lily, and Mason Leonard & Emrie, Raelie, and Gage Niehues.

A Rosary will be prayed at 2 PM on Sunday, October 18th at the Lauer Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 19, 2020 at 2 PM at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. Burial will be at a later date at St. Bede’s Catholic Cemetery.

Harold W. Pace, Sr., 88, of Holton, KS, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2020 at The Pines South in Holton. He was born May 26, 1932 in Muscotah, KS, the son of Ezekial B. “E.B.” and Helen Elizabeth (Starr) Pace.

Harold attended school in Effingham. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 -1955 during the Korean Conflict. Harold worked at Goodyear Tire Company for many years in the receiving department; retiring in 1994. He also farmed for most of his life.

He attended Muscotah Methodist Church and was a member of United Steel Workers Local #307.

Harold married Ruth “Mary” Pace on October 1, 1960 in Topeka. They celebrated 58 years of marriage, before she passed on March 21, 2018. He was also preceded in death by a son, Harold W. Pace, Jr. on March 12, 2014; 3 sisters, Mary Helen Pace, Virginia Hansford and Grace Lavone Rodrick and 2 brothers, Francis and Robert Pace.

Survivors include a son, Raymond W. Pace and a daughter, Patricia L.  Davis both of Holton, KS.

Melvin Donald Hoffman, 86, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Monday, October 12, 2020 at the Sabetha Community Hospital. 

Mel was born September 19, 1934 to Emerson and Irene (Carpenter) Hoffman. He was raised in rural Brown County and attended school in Morrill, Kansas, graduating with the class of 1953.

Mel was united in marriage to Amelia Zimmerschied on November 4, 1955. To this union were born three children, Cynthia, Randy, and Richard.

He most recently attended and was a member of the Delaware Baptist Church. He worked at the Sabetha Creamery and later owned and operated Hoffman and Sons Milk Hauling service.

Mel enjoyed working on his trucks, and in his retirement years restored antique pedal tractors and cars for himself as well as for others. He also enjoyed attending toy auctions, especially with his brother, Ray.

One of his biggest joys was being with his 10 grandchildren and getting to know his 15 great grandchildren.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Amelia on March 24, 2020; his sister, Peggy Graybill; and his brother, Bob Hoffman.

Mel is survived by his children, Cindy Feagan and husband, George Johnson of Sanibel, Florida, Randy Hoffman and wife, Lynda of Sabetha, Kansas, and Richard Hoffman and wife, Lisa of Tecumseh, Kansas; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and his brother, Ray Hoffman of Blanchard, Iowa.

His smile and kind heart will be missed by many around the community.

Memorial graveside services for James Ferbrache, 64, formerly of the Hiawatha-Fairview area, are planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, October 22, 2020, at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Hiawatha High School Classmate of Bernie Fortmeyer will officiate.

Following the graveside, everyone is invited to the Carwell Building on the grounds of the Ag Museum for lunch, sharing memories, and to celebrate Jim’s life.

Merna Darline Sailors Wright, 100, of Falls City, NE, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Falls City. She was born January 17, 1920 to Loyd & Roxie (Smith) Sailors 2 miles northeast of Barada, Ne.

She attended school at Barada and Shubert High School. She was employed at Barada Grocery store and in the business office of Hested’s Dime store in Falls City.

She married William Wright, Jr. at Hiawatha, KS when Bill returned home from serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, December 6, 1945.They lived and farmed one mile north of Barada until June 12, 1983 when Bill passed away. She moved to Falls City in a couple of different homes, on September 7, 2007 she entered Falls City Care Center.

Darline enjoyed working along with her husband with farm work. She loved her nieces and nephews and little children. She was talented musician and was a pianist & organist at Barada United Methodist Church for 60 years and also a member of the church.

Darline is survived by brother, Duane Sailors of Lincoln, NE, sister-in-law: Caroline (Sailors) Palmer of Falls City, nephews, Douglas & Greg Sailors, nieces: Diane McCaan, Roxanne Sailors, Gina Noll & Jonie Sailors. She is preceded in death by parents, husband, brother, Eldro Sailors, nephews Leon & Jason Sailors, great-niece, Tammy Sailors, sister-in-law Barbara Sailors, great-nephew Todd Sailors.

Diana Lynn (Kelly) Moxley, 73, Atchison KS passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at Country Oak Village, Grain Valley, MO.

A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Mt. Diana was born on January 25, 1947 in Horton, KS and was the daughter of Jack & Janie (Bowles) Reichart.  She attended St. Luke’s College of Health Sciences.  She worked as a registered nurse at the Atchison Hospital and the Youth Center, Atchison.  She also owned and operated Atchison Stor-N-Lock, retiring in 2012.  Diana was a member of the First Christian Church where she was a long time deaconess and member of the choir, praise team and Peacemakers.  She was also a member of Sweet Adeline’s. Church bible studies, rummage sales, cooking and singing Christian Contemporary songs were her fondest joys.

Diana married Gary Moxley on August 13, 1975, he preceded her in death in July 2016.  Additional survivors include her mother, Janie Reichart, Atchison KS, her siblings: Mike Kelly and Shelia (LeRoy) Antes, Atchison; her children: Gary (Kathy) Moxley, Independence, MO, Craig (Val) Miller, Fort Lee, VA, Ayhn Moxley, Kansas City, MO, Chad Miller, Kansas City, KS, and Kristi (Hank) Olson, Atchison, KS, her grandchildren: Sara Bartimus, Jenny Wells, Audrey Wallace, Sydney Henderson, Bryan Miller, Tiffany Vaughn, Paige Miller, Tony Miller, and Jerene Moxley; and her great grandchildren: Riley Miller, Keegan Miller, Kolin Miller, Dakota Vaughn, Delaney Vaughn, Joseph Bartimus, Anna Jerene Bartimus, and Parker Wallace. John Wesley Portenier, Jr, 67, of Atchison, KS, passed away Monday, October 12, 2020 from a battle with liver cancer at his home surrounded by his loving family.

John was born May 22, 1953 in Atchison, KS, the son, of Cecelia and Donald Bowen, father, John W. Portenier, Sr. He graduated from Atchison High School.  John worked as a welder for We-Mac for almost thirty-five years.  He attended Faith Bible Fellowship Church.  John enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing sports like softball, basketball, coaching his kid’s teams growing up.  He also enjoyed watching KU basketball, the Chiefs and Royals.  John especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John married Teresa Avey on March 16, 1970, she survives of the home.  Additional survivors include his mother, Cecelia Bowen, Atchison, KS, a son, Ryan and Laura Portenier, Atchison, KS, two daughters; Michelle and Brandon Underwood, Atchison, KS, Sabrina and Michael Lasater, Atchison, KS, a brother, Joe (Barbara) Portenier, eight grandchildren; Erin (Derrick) Hughes, Jacob (Jaysha) Portenier, Colin Lasater, Kerstin (Darrin) Schmidt, Lexi Lasater, Kinley Underwood, Kennedy Portenier, Brooklynn Portenier, five great grandchildren; Audrey Belveal-Portenier, Levi Schmidt, Abel Portenier, Brynzlee Hughes, Jaxson Hughes.

Dennis Wayne Taylor, 81, Iowa Point, KS native, passed away early Monday, October 12, 2020.

Dennis was born in Iowa Point, on November 16th, 1938, to the late Floyd and Hazel Randall Taylor. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: William, Victor, and Ronald, and a step sister Linda Butrick.

He was married to Kathleen Bassford Taylor for sixty two years. They were blessed with three children: Wendy Taylor Veech, Michael Taylor, Colleen Taylor Nolting, three grandchildren: Westly Nolting, Ronald Nolting, and Cristal Veech; three great-grandchildren: William Veech, Anthony Veech, and David Nolting; brother Douglas Taylor of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dennis worked as an industrial electrician for the Denver & Rio Grand, and later the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring the Rohr Corporation after over 20 years of service.

They retired to Kansas near the White Cloud area where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and to rejoin the extensive Taylor clan of White Cloud and Highland.

Memorial Graveside services are planned for 1 p.m. Thursday, October 15, at Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.

Mary N. (Hrenchir) Griffis passed away peacefully Saturday, October 10, 2020, at the home of her daughter in Corpus Christi, Texas, with whom she made her home with for over 10 years.

The family will meet with friends starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 14 with a service to follow at 11 a.m., at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland. Wayne Feuerbacher, her nephew, will officiate.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Leona.

Memorial contributions are suggested to be used for scholarship purposes at Doniphan West High School, sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box 33, 66035.

Mary was born in rural Highland, April 25, 1921 one of seven children born to Richard and Beulah Brown Hrenchir. She grew up in Doniphan County where she graduated high school. Mary worked hard to further her education: bachelor degree at Marshall, MO, master of education at Warrensburg, MO.

She married Bertram Griffis May 8, 1941. They lived in Kansas City a short time prior to moving to Marshall, Missouri where she taught third grade for 29 years. They later to moved Leona, Kansas where she again taught in Doniphan County, some of which included Special Education in Highland and Hiawatha. “She never turned down a teaching opportunity.” She was one busy person: she did orchard work, helped Bertram on the farm, raising chickens, gardening many years which was over a half acre. Not only would she share what she raised, she also would share the produce after she canned it.

They were members of Bellevue United Methodist Church, north of Leona, where she ‘always’ taught Sunday School. Mary was a longtime member of Missouri and Kansas teacher associations.

Survivors include her daughter Mary Jo Smith of Corpus Christi, a brother Wilfred Hrenchir of Arizona, granddaughter Sonya Smith, also of Corpus; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bertram in 1988, two grandchildren Barry in 1995, Terri in 2011, siblings Norman, Harold, Victor Hrenchir, Geneva Feuerbacher and Mildred Breckenridge.

Larry Burlingame, 48, of Falls City, NE, passed away October 9, 2020 at Kirksville, MO. He was born January 19, 1972 at Parsons, KS to David and Peggy (Jones) Burlingame.

He married Jayme Vice on October 4, 2014 at Falls City

Larry was raised in Cherryville and Parsons. He attended Altamont Public Schools and moved to Falls City following his schooling. He then lived in Parson and Texas before permanently moving back to Falls City in 1993 and has lived here since. He owned his own landscaping business and operated it until hurting his back. When married the couple established their home in Falls City. He was a member of Good News Assembly of God Church.

Larry is survived by his wife, Jayme of Falls City, mother, Peggy Burlingame of Falls City, sisters, Debbie Williams and her husband Chester of Green Top, MO, Donna Stiles and her husband Mike, Denise Burlingame both of Neodesha, KS, Misty Burlingame of Independence, KS. He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 3:30 PM at Good News Assembly of God Church with Pastor Tim Boatright officiating.

Nellie Ann Inks, 71, of Salem, NE, passed away October 11, 2020 at Falls City, NE. She was born December 4, 1948 at Humboldt, NE to William and Leola (Kerr) Inks.

Nellie Ann lived with her parents in the rural Pawnee City, NE area until moving to Salem in 1954. She attended rural Salem and Salem grade schools and graduated from Falls City High School in 1967. She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for James Oil, Merz Farm Equipment and for Weaver and Merz Law Firm until retiring in 2017. She loved nature, the outdoors and livestock. She was a member of the Richardson County Humane Society.

Nellie is survived by several cousins and special friends, Shiela and Doug Huppert and Madeline and Eldon Vonderschmidt. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Boatright officiating. Interment will be in Maple Cemetery at Salem.

Viewing and open visitation will begin Tuesday afternoon.

Tim Lyons, 65, of Falls City, NE, passed away October 10, 2020 at Falls City. He was born October 8, 1955 at Falls City to John and Marjorie (Bennett) Lyons. 

He married Lisa Rokey in December of 1979 at Sabetha and they were later divorced. He then married Sandy Appleoff at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Dawson in 2015.

Tim was raised in Dawson and graduated from Dawson-Verdon High School in 1974. He then attended Peru State College and then Kearney State College and in 1976 he began working for Burlington Northern Railroad, he was a road master supervisor and retired in October of 2015. He then worked helping farmers, tree shearing and other jobs to stay busy. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Dawson and the ATA Trap Shooting, NRA and Falls City Elks Lodge.

Tim is survived by his wife, Sandy of Falls City, children, John and his wife Debbie of Sabetha, KS, Kelly Ford and her husband Chet of Kansas City, MO, mother, Marjorie Lyons of Falls City, sister, Cindy Taylor and her husband Ron of Kansas City, MO, brothers, Jeff and his wife Kathy of Effingham, KS, Steve and his wife Donna of Bennett, CO, Terry and his wife Deborah of Lincoln, Jim and his wife Mary of Omaha, Bill of Gardner, KS, Joe and his wife Theresa of Ashland, NE, grandchildren, John Emmet and Delilah Lyons, Masche and Farrah Ford. He was preceded in death by his father.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Dawson with Father Kenneth Hoesing as the presiding priest. Interment will be St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

A Parish Rosary will be recited on Wednesday at 7:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the rosary at St. Mary’s Fellowship Hall.

Wilfred “Bill” A. Ronnebaum, 90, of Seneca, Kansas died October 12, 2020 at his home east of Seneca.

Bill was born on January 20, 1930 at Oneida, Kansas, to Clemens J. and Anna M. Strathman Ronnebaum. He attended school at Old Victor 99 and the Oneida School in Oneida, Kansas. He helped on the family farm until he was drafted into the US Army on December 2, 1954. He served his country until he was discharged on November 30, 1956 with a rank of SP3 (T). After he was discharged, he was employed by General Motors in the Fairfax district and made trips back home to continue the family tradition of farming.

On September 4, 1961, he married Ruth Heinen at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. After 15 years of service to GM he retired and bought the farm east of Seneca, where the couple spent many years farming, raising livestock and gathering eggs together. It’s on that same farm where Bill took his last breath. Bill was also a full-time school bus driver for several years.

Bill enjoyed a good card game, Bingo and working on the land he farmed.

He is survived by two sons, Lynn Ronnebaum of Lenexa, Kansas and Brian (Babette) Ronnebaum of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters Shirley (Dwayne) Miller of St. George, Kansas and Janet (David) Vance of Wamego, Kansas; a sister, Helen Heinen of Seneca; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth, on September 23, 2018. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Henry, Vince, Sylvester, and Melvin Ronnebaum; an infant sister Frances; and sisters, Evelyn Hammes, Florence Deters and Catherine Rettele.

Rosaries will be prayed at 7 PM Tuesday, October 13th and 9 AM Wednesday, October 14th at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Church Cemetery.

Sandra Lou “Sandy” Martin, 65, of Holton, KS, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020 in Topeka, KS. She was born June 4, 1955 in Wichita, KS, the daughter of Jerry Duane Cochran and Doris “Jean” O’Neal.

Sandy graduated from Jackson Heights High School in 1973. She worked for Payless Cashways as a cashier and paint supervisor, State Hospital as a Mental Health Aide, Conger Dental and the State of Kansas in the Unemployment Division all in Topeka.

Sandy married Darrell Allen Martin on May 17, 1980 in Holton. They celebrated over 40 years of marriage.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell Martin of the home; her mother, Jean O’Neal of Holton, KS; a son, Christopher Christie (Jessica) of Topeka, KS; step-son, Robert Martin of Tijuana, Mexico; 3 sisters, Candace “Candy” Schmitt (Doug) of Horton, KS, Rhonda Toth of Horton, KS and Thresa Bontrager (Rusty) of Independence, KS; 2 brothers, Jay Cochran (Becky) of Holton, KS and William Daniel “Dan” Webster of Whiting, KS and 4 grandchildren, Reagan Christie, Jaxson Christie, Trenton Henery and Emily Martin.

Sandy was preceded in death by her father, Jerry Duane Cochran, and a brother, Rickey Cochran.

Nancy Kay Shelton, 77, of Atchison KS, died Sunday, October 11, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family.

Nancy was born on Aug. 14, 1943 in Atchison KS the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Birch) Vandiver.  She attended Atchison High School.   Nancy worked as a clerk for Rexall Drug Store in Troy KS and as an associate at the Atchison Walmart for many years.  She was a member of St. Benedict’s Church and enjoyed reading, traveling to Branson, and spending time with friends and her grandchildren.

Nancy married Gene Shelton, they later divorced. She met Don Bramble, they shared their life together for over 27 years.  Mr. Bramble preceded her in death on June 27, 2018.  Survivors include a son Ron (Laralee) Shelton, Atchison, KS, two daughters, Judy K. (Jeff) Sailors, Falls City, NE, and Lori Lynn Cox, Savannah, MO.  Don’s children, two sons, Donald E. (Linda) Bramble, Jr., Rushville, MO, and Mark (Sharon) Hurst, Effingham, KS,  a sister, Sandy (Ray) Knowles, Atchison, KS, thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Her parents, Mr. Bramble, a brother Lester “Bob” Thomas, and two sisters, Virgie Harl, and Mary Ann Liebsch, a grandson Aaron Christopher Shelton and a son in law, Ricky Don Cox preceded her in death.

Josepha Emma (Niehues) Altenhofen, 95, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Josepha was born March 23, 1925 on a farm southeast of Kelly, Kansas, the daughter of Bernard Sr. and Mary (Knipper) Niehues. She was the 12th of fifteen children. Josepha attended Kelly Grade School, graduated from Kelly High School in 1942, and attended 1 year at Mt. St. Scholastica College (now Benedictine College), Atchison, Kansas.

She worked for various families in Nemaha County, helping with housework and new babies for $10-15 a week.

She met Virgil G. Altenhofen at a monthly Kelly dance and after he served 4 years in the US Army Air Force during WW II, they married April 15, 1948 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church, Kelly.

They worked side by side, operating the Altenhofen Quality Oil Station in Kelly, until Virgil passed away unexpectedly in 1974. Josepha continued operating the service station until she retired in 1991. She was an excellent seamstress, gardener, and baker. She was well known for her decorated sugar cookies, homemade lemon pie, and beautifully decorated wedding cakes.

Josepha moved to Lincoln, NE in 2009 to be closer to her children. She was the “ace” Bingo and pitch player at the Assisted Living Center where she resided until getting ill.

Josepha was a hardworking, determined, and faithful person. Throughout her life, she had to make difficult adjustments and her faith has given her the strength to adapt to difficult circumstances and unwanted changes. After her husband died, Josepha sacrificed without hesitation to ensure both of her children completed college, one to become a veterinarian and the other a physical therapist.

When she suffered a mild stroke and needed to relocate to an assisted living facility, she embraced community life, becoming actively involved in card groups, exercise class, Bingo, and volunteering to work in the facility’s convenience store. In her spare time, she crocheted over 100 preemie blanket/hat sets for babies born at rest at Bryan Hospital. She prided herself in voting in every presidential election since 1944 (FDR vs. Dewey). And she always had a smile!

Josepha definitely lived with purpose and this past year stated “I can’t die yet as I have too many people to pray for”. She said 3 rosaries a day for everyone’s prayer intentions. She was a lifelong member of St. Bede’s Parish and St. Ann’s Altar Society, Kelly.

Josepha was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil (1974) , her mother Mary (1942) and father Bernard (1954), her brothers Bernard Jr., Albert, John, Robert, George, and Edwin and her sisters Agnes Niehues, Sr. Richardis Niehues, OSB, Anna Niehues, Alma Haverkamp, Margaret Boeckman, Evelyn Hutfles, and Erma Niehues and her best friend, Marietta Hodgens (2017).

Josepha is survived by her two children, Dr. Donald Altenhofen of Lincoln, NE and Marilyn (Dr. Paul) Dongilli of Lincoln, NE; Two grandchildren Sophia Dongilli (Fiancé Dr. Joseph Dougherty) of Omaha, NE and Dominic Dongilli of Iowa City, IA; A Sister, Antoinette Hermesch of San Antonio, TX.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 and 7 P.M. on Thursday, October 15, 2020 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 A.M. on Friday, October 16, 2020 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, KS.

Geraldine M. “Geri” Lone, 76, of Leavenworth, KS formerly of Atchison, KS died Friday, Oct. 9, 2020 at the North Care Hospice Health, North Kansas City, MO.

Geri was born on Jan. 24, 1944 in Alton, ILL the daughter of Clarence F. and Edith May (Abner) Pearson. She graduated from Alton High School in 1962. She moved to Atchison in early 1970’s and worked as a sewer for Atchison Leather Products for 21 years. She later worked for Robbie’s MFG for 13 years in Lenexa, KS. Geri enjoyed reading, was a Salvation Army volunteer in Atchison and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.

She was married to William J. “Bill” Lone on Sept. 27, 2000 in Leavenworth KS. Mr. Lone survives of the home. Additional survivors include two daughters, Diana (Mark) Servaes, Atchison and Denene Dale and Terry Scholz, Atchison, two brothers, Allan Pearson, Godfrey, ILL and Donald Pearson, Dorsey, ILL, a sister, Susan Dare, Tulsa, OK, five grandchildren; Courtney Servaes, Kellie Servaes , Danielle Galley, Megan Reiss, Jeramie Scherer and seven great grandchildren. Her parents, a daughter Denise Galley, and a brother, Delmont Pearson preceded her in death.

Darla Kay Hanks, 64, of Holton, KS, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020 at The University of Kansas Health System-St. Francis Campus. She was born December 15, 1955 in Wamego, KS, the daughter of Louis and Lucille Elaine (Bachman) Bonner.

Darla was a CNA, CMA and Restorative Aide. She worked for the Dechairo Hospital and Westmoreland Community Care, both in Westmoreland and Wharton Manor in Manhattan, KS.

She loved to travel; she especially loved her trip to New Zealand. She was a wonderful grandma and aunt to her nieces and nephews. Darla was also an avid Holton Wildcat Football fan.

She married Robert Hanks, they later divorced.

 Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Hanks of Holton, KS; sister, JoAnn Douglas of Stillwater, OK; brother, Bill Bonner of Las Vegas, NV; 2 step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

 Darla was preceded in death by her parents; a step-son, Robby Hanks; sister, Beverly Bonner and brother, Darrell Bonner.

 Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at First Christian Church in Holton. Darla will lie in state starting Monday morning at the funeral home. Dale B. Schneider, 81, Atchison, Kansas, died Friday, October 9, 2020, at his residence with his family at his side.

Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Benedict’s Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. Dale was born January 29, 1939, in Nortonville, Kansas, the son of Charles W. and Ida Oleva Good Schneider. He attended St. Joseph Grade School in Nortonville and graduated from the Nortonville High School.

He and Theresa E. Wohletz were united in marriage on January 19, 1963, at St. Benedict’s Church in Atchison, Kansas.

Dale served with the Atchison Fire Department for thirty-one years, from 1959 – 1990, where he began as a firefighter and worked his way through the ranks eventually serving as a Captain/Platoon Commander. During his years at the department, on his days off he was employed at Cooper’s Foundry, for Luther Campbell – Atchison Construction and later with Mike Hundley – Hundley Construction. After retiring from the fire department he worked as a custodian for Atchison Catholic Elementary School and St. Benedict’s Church. He was a self-employed painter and refinished woodwork in several historic homes in Atchison.

He was a member of St. Benedict Parish where he formerly served as a Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of Atchison Elks Lodge and the Sacred Heart Council #723 of the Knights of Columbus and the William T. Jochems General Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife of fifty seven years, Theresa Schneider of the couple’s home in Atchison, KS; three daughters, Catherine (Jon) Mitchell, Liberty, MO; Lori Jones, McPherson, KS; Angela (Nathan) Haberichter, Wichita, KS; two brothers, Ralph Schneider, Mound City, KS; Patrick Schneider, Rossville, KS; two sisters, Evelyn Bernica, Topeka, KS; Elizabeth “Betty” Coleman, Valley Falls, KS; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Talley and four brothers, Kenneth Schneider, Richard Schneider, John Paul “Jack” Schneider and Harold Schneider; half brothers, Charles and Edgar and a half-sister, Ellen.

It is with great sadness that the family of Beverly F. Ricketts announce her passing on Oct 9, 2020.

Beverly was born on August 24, 1944 at home in Elk Grove, California to William and Ethel (Chaffin) Wilcox. Beverly married William B. Ricketts on May 1, 1975 in Camp Creek, KS.

Beverly was an LPN at the Colmery O’Neil Medical Center in Topeka, KS for 18 years where she retired. She had a passion for crocheting and made afghans throughout the years for family members and close friends. Her love of animals has always been strong as her assortment of animals on the farm could attest.

Beverly is survived by her husband Bill, of the home, her daughters Luana (Michael) Schneider, Atchison; Marsha Ricketts, Muscotah,KS ; Jolen (Randy) Schmalstieg, Meriden, KS; her two sons, David (Kristi) Ricketts, Belton, Mo; and Earl (Tammy) Ricketts, Cummings. She is also survived by two sisters Valerie and Carol, two brothers Eddie and Albert and three half brothers Delbert, Kenny Joe, and Richard Wilcox.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Robert Stephenson, Michael Stephenson, Addam Stephenson, Jon Schneider, Matt Schneider, Lauren Doyle, Tiffany Young, Geoffrey Lucas, Brittany Shepard, Sean Jessip, Thomas Ricketts, Evan Ricketts, Aaron Ricketts, and Robert Ricketts. Beverly was blessed to have 19 great grandchildren in her life as well.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Ethel Wilcox, four sisters, Doris, Dorothy, Ethel and Ruth; one brother, Gene.

There will be a graveside service on October 16, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Nortonville Cemetery as she wished to be cremated. Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. A celebration of life will be held directly after the service at the Nortonville Knights of Columbus Hall in Nortonville.

Geneva Pauline Lee, 101, formerly of Dawson, Nebraska was born on July 30, 1919 in Goff, Kansas to the late Santa Brammer and the late Sadie (Lancaster) Rhoades.  She was the first born of seven kids.  Geneva grew up on a Kansas farm moving to Nebraska in 1933.  She graduated from Honey Creek High School with the class of 1938.  On January 20, 1939, Geneva was united in marriage to William Virgil Lee.  To this union a daughter, Donna Kay, was born.  The couple farmed south of Dawson until moving to Dawson in 1970, where they drove school busses for the Dawson public school for ten years.  When the weather was good, they spent most of their free time fishing in the lakes and rivers.  They taught grandson, Marc to fish; he soon was catching the most fish!  Geneva was a charter member on the Dawson Community Improvement Program started in 1972, winning a state award, presented in person by the Governor in Lincoln, Nebraska.  In 2012, Geneva moved to Kansas City to live near her family.  She was happy every day and lived independently until her death.  Geneva will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Geneva passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at the Shawnee Post Acute Rehabilitation Center in Overland Park, Kansas having reached the earthly age of 101 years, 2 months and 7 days.  She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson Bradley vonBergen, a sister Ilene (Lauren) Priest, brothers Glenn (Ruth) and Harold (Zola) Brammer, brothers-in-law Junior Humfeld and Kermit Shawl and son-in-law Michael vonBergen.
Geneva is survived by her daughter Donna “Kay” vonBergen of Olathe, KS; grandchildren: Marc vonBergen and wife Patricia of Odessa, TX; Stacia Hawkins and husband Bobby of Merriam, KS; great-grandchildren: Valarie Hawkins of Shawnee, KS; Spencer Hawkins of Shawnee, KS; Brandon vonBergen of Odessa, TX; sisters: Mary Humfeld of Queen Valley, AZ; Carolyn Jo Shawl of rural Humboldt, NE; a brother Fred Brammer and wife Shirley of Fairview, KS; and other relatives and friends.
Gravesides Memorial Services for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2020, at the Wild Rose Cemetery south of Dawson, Nebraska with Pastor Howard Blecha officiating.

Ethel Elaine “Sug” McGuire, age 77, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2020, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Louis Church with Fr. Hughes Sundeme as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Louis Church Cemetery. Sug was born on January 29, 1943, at home in Wathena, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Edna (Fleek) Miller. She attended St. Louis Grade School and graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy. Following graduation she attended Gard’s Business College in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Sug and Max L. McGuire were united in marriage on January 5, 1963, at St. Joseph Cathedral in St. Joseph, Missouri. Max preceded her in death on November 3, 2002.

She began her employment with St. Benedict’s Abbey as a receptionist, spent over 20 years at Arensberg’s Shoes and retired from Mount St. Scholastica Monastery after spending 19 years as a receptionist.

Sug was a member of St. Louis Church and the church Altar Society. She spent countless hours gardening and tending to her yard work at the church including mowing, planting and maintaining the flower beds and making sure the church lawn was kept pristine. She was most proud of being a Mom – She never missed a birthday and her boys never missed expressing their love on Mother’s Day.

Sug is survived by her two sons, Rob (Joanie) McGuire, Mike McGuire; three brothers, Burnace (Linda) Miller, Melvin (Ruth) Miller, Ron (Anita) Miller; three sisters, Ellen Mae Hickman, Carol Jean (H.B.) Keithline, Mary Lynn Geisendorf; a brother-in-law, R.W. Fesperman and two grandchildren, Travis and Kyle McGuire.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Max; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Miller; a sister, Eunice “Dolly” Fesperman; two brothers-in-law, Jack Hickman, Gene Geisendorf; and a great niece, Jentri Fowler.

Alice Faye Holcomb, 72, of Holton, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2020 in Topeka.

She was born June 30, 1948 in Madisonville, KY the daughter of Brank and Gracie Pearl (Gates) Duvall.  Alice graduated from Earlington High School in Earlington, KY then attended Cosmetology College.  Later she went to nursing school and obtained her LPN.  She had worked as a cosmetologist in Kentucky and later an ER nurse also in Kentucky and North Carolina.  When she moved to Holton in 1994, she helped to establish the Cardiac Rehab Clinic at Holton Community Hospital.  She also had worked for Hallmark Cards in both Topeka and Lawrence from where she retired.

Alice was a member of a Baptist Church in Traphill, NC, a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary, #44 Mary L. Blair and was a charter member of the American Legion Riders Post 44.

On April 5, 1985 Alice married Michael C. Holcomb in Dawson Springs, KY.  He survives of the home.  Other survivors include: her children, Shane Duncan (Joy) of Topeka, KS, Clinton Duncan of Holton, KS, Jason Duncan (Marti) of Morton’s Gap, KY and Ashley Boyle of Hiawatha, KS; her sister, Shirley Oldham of Dawson Springs, KY; her brother, Jerry Duvall (Claudia) of Earlington, KY; her grandchildren, Tyler, Tosha, Chandler and Kendall Duncan, Ian Lee, and Katie and Jensen Boyle; and her great-grandchild, Tylin Martin.

Linden E. Whitfield, 57, of St. Joseph, MO formerly of Atchison, KS died on Saturday, Oct. 3rd, 2020 at the Atchison Amberwell Hospital

Linden was born on Feb. 22, 1963 in St. Joseph, MO the son of Joe and Evelyn L. (Herbers) Whitfield. He graduated in 1981 from West Platte High School, Weston, Mo. Linden worked for the Atchison Street Dept before joining the Atchison Police Dept in 1987. He attended the Police Academy in Hutchinson, KS was an officer and fire arms instructor for APD until 2001. He then worked for Ferrell Gas Company and presently worked for the ACME Vending Company, St. Joseph, MO. Linden was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Rushville, MO. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, trap shooting, and golfing.

He was married to Billie K. (Burnett) Whitfield in 1983. They were divorced in 1996. He was married to Lori (Steele) Dugger in 1997 and they were divorced in 2008. Survivors include a daughter, Tiffany Whitfield-Gallagher, Atchison, KS, three sons, Kyle, Drake, and Gage Whitfield, all of Atchison, KS, two half sisters Kay Green, Sedalia, MO and Carol Heruman, Gladstone, MO, four grandchildren, Aiden, Addisen, Adaleigh, and Adler Gallagher, Atchison. His parents and a half brother Jerry Whitfield preceded him in death.

Opal Fritz, 98, of Humboldt, NE, passed away October 6, 2020 at Humboldt. She was born April 21, 1922 at Humboldt to Henry and Alma (Brown) Herr.

She married Wilbert A. Fritz on January 11, 1948 at Humboldt. He passed away July 18, 1970.

Opal lived in rural Humboldt and moved into Humboldt in 1941. She attended Northwest Star District 10 School and Bratton Union Consolidated School. She then attended beauty school and had a beauty shop in Humboldt with her sister, Neloma. She also worked as a beautician in Falls City from 1962 until 1973. After her husband’s death she moved back to Humboldt and became a dog breeder. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church at Humboldt. She was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, member of the choir, Concordia Guild and Altar Guild. She was a volunteer at Colonial Acres Nursing Home and was an avid seamstress and quilter.

Opal is survived by her children: Larry and his wife Patricia of Lincoln, NE, Marlee Portrey and her husband David of Wallace, ID, Lynn of Milford, NE, Deborah Phillips and her husband Tom of Leavenworth, KS, grandchildren, Michelle Hannon and her husband Donovan of Wichita, KS, Christopher Phillips and his wife Mysty of Bonner Springs, KS, Brandon Portrey of Phoenix, Alyssa Portrey of Silverton, ID and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, seven brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter, Cindy.

Her funeral will will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Reverend Tim Llewellyn officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Mary "Jane" Lockwood, 96, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at her home.

She was born on December 19, 1923 in Horton, Kansas the daughter of Homer J. and Katherine Guier Willis. Janie graduated from Willis High School in 1942. She was a wife, mother, and worked for the Horton Garment Factory.  After retiring at 65 as the bookkeeper at Edco Grain in Everest, she worked as a camp host for 20 years, retiring for the second time at age 85.  On September 12, 1947 she married Leon Lockwood in Horton, Kansas.  They lived in Horton, Kansas, Everest, Kansas and Kidder, Missouri though out the years of  their married life.

Survivors include her husband, Leon Lockwood of the home; daughter, Susie Lednicky of Horton, Kansas; son, Tom Lockwood of Hiawatha, Kansas; two brothers, Jack (Zelma) Willis of Texas and Jerry (Charlene) Willis of Kansas City, Missouri; five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a son in law, Mike Sands.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Leon Lockwood, daughter, Cathy Sands, daughter in law, Joyce Lockwood, sister, Jody Streeter and brother, Jim Willis.

The family will greet family and friends on Sunday afternoon, October 11, 2020 from 2:00 to 3:30 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. A private service will be held at a later date. John Ballard Glen, Jr., age 78 of Auburn, passed away at Ambassador Health in Omaha on Monday, October 5, 2020.

Survivors include his children and spouses Melanie McBride of Raleigh, NC; John and Sarah Glen III of Fremont; Polly and Adam Stern of Omaha; Ginny and Abdul Ghafoor of Woodbury, MN; grandchildren George and Genevieve Nincehelser, Noreen and Nadia Ghafoor, Zach and Samantha Stern, Derek, Ashton and Annsleigh Glen; sisters and spouses Dee and Jery Phillip of Omaha; Mary Lee and Chris Ehrke of Lincoln; other relatives and many friends.

A private family graveside service will be at Sheridan West Cemetery at Auburn. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday, October 8, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00.

Delores K. Spence was born at Horton, September 13, 1933, one of four children born to George and Dora Marie Schuetz Spence. She grew up at Horton where she attended St. Leo’s grade school prior to attending Horton High School, later working to earn her GED so she could attend Clark’s Business School in Topeka for two years. She also attended Washburn University, also in Topeka, for a year majoring in English composition.

Delores had been a resident of The Pines in Hiawatha for 2 1/2 years, where she passed away Sunday evening, September 27, 2020. She had lived at Maple Grove Senior Apartments for several years before moving to the Pines.

She spent most of her working life in Topeka, first for the state of Kansas as a clerk-typist for five years. She was a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell and later AT&T for a total of 25 years before retiring. She returned to Brown County where she worked as a nurse aide at the Horton Hospital, and for a dentist Dr. Hill, for 5 years.

Her faith was a very important part of her life: she was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church at Mercier while she was growing up. After returning to Brown County, she was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hiawatha.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Carolyn Young, and brothers Ralph Spence and Cliff Spence.

Surviving are her extended family, her Church family, and friends.

A memorial graveside service is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2020, at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Father Dan Gardner will officiate.

Norbert G. Schmitz, 92, of Axtell, KS, died Thursday evening, October 1, 2020, at Life Care Center in Seneca, where he was a resident short time.

He was born on December 12, 1927, on a farm northwest of St. Benedict, KS, the son of George and Louise Oenbring Schmitz. He grew up there, attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, helped on the family farm and studied at St. Benedict’s College in Atchison for a year. After returning home, he worked for Ray Droge Construction for several years; as well as farming the family farm. On March 8, 1951, he was inducted into the U.S. Army where he served in Tokyo; first in Finance and then as a Special Service Chaplain’s Assistant. After his discharge in 1953, he returned to the family farm and helped Leslie Droge as a hired man.

On May 2, 1953, he married Dolores H. Deters at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They lived north of Seneca for a year, then south of Baileyville until 1961, before moving to a farm south of Axtell. They farmed, raised livestock and operated a Grade-A Dairy. In 1990, they retired and moved into Axtell.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion R.R. Henricks Post 214, all in Axtell.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Dolores on July 1, 2002; a daughter, Mary Kay Schmitz on December 18, 1965; a granddaughter, Stacey Schmitz on September 29, 1990; four brothers, Adrian Schmitz, Clarence B. Schmitz, Francis A. Schmitz, Clarence J. Schmitz and Lambert Schmitz; and two sisters, Martha Engelken and Helen Bergman.

Survivors are his six sons, David A. (Gail) Schmitz of Holton, KS, Lawrence “Larry” (Christy) Schmitz of Reading, KS, James “Jim” (Alice) Schmitz of Frankfort, KS, William J. “Bill” (Wanda) Schmitz of Newton, KS, Dennis Schmitz of Baileyville and Joseph G. “Joe” (Amy) Schmitz of Axtell, KS; a daughter, Janet A.(Mike) Ronnebaum of Axtell, KS; a sister, Norita Rempe of Hutchinson; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 AM on Monday, October 5, 2020, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 PM on Sunday afternoon, October 4th at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca and at 7 PM at St. Michael’s Church in Axtell.

Carrie Margaret Miller, 96, of Holton, KS, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Medicalodge Jackson County. She was born August 12, 1924 in Mayetta, KS, the daughter of Rob and Sadie (Gibbons) Miller.

On May 7, 1958 her father passed away and on June 10, 1969 her mother passed away, leaving Carrie alone.  Carrie had--“Many heartaches and disappointments thru the years.”. At that time, the only relatives were an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brown of Wetmore and cousins.

Carrie grew up east of Mayetta and attended Tutt School. In 1937, she moved west of Mayetta and graduated from Blandin School in 1942. On June 10, 1945 she was baptized and united with the Church of Christ, meeting in the Brewer schoolhouse. Later the church was discontinued and she transferred membership to Topeka Church of Christ, but due to distance she was seldom able to attend.

On January 1954, Carrie went to work for Slimaker Dress Factory and worked until it closed in 1973. A Horton dress factory came to Holton and she worked for them until it closed in 1977. In October of 1977 she went to Topeka to work and retired in March of 1987 and moved back to Holton.

Carrie loved to do handwork and spent many hours doing for others who were first in her life.

Survivors include a foster nephew, Dennis Shea, his wife and children; friend and caretaker, Curtis Goodman (Tina) and family; Martin and Anna Alvarez, their daughter Veronica, her dog PJ and numerous cousins near and far and many dear friends.

She was also preceded in death by half-brother, Art Miller.

 Anthony “Tony” Alan Atwood, 30, of Wetmore, KS, passed away September 28, 2020 in Phoenix, AZ. Tony passed away from covid complications. He was born February 17, 1990 in Pomona, CA, the son of Wm. Brian Atwood and Lisa Ann Robidoux.

Tony attended the Wetmore Academic Center from 1st grade until his graduation in 2008. Tony was also a member of the Wetmore Bible Church.

Tony loved superheroes such as the Power Rangers, WWE, Hexgirls, and Scooby Doo. He enjoyed going fishing and Sonic Happy Hour. His favorite music was always Garth Brooks.

 He was a member of the Wetmore Superheroes team for Special Olympics where he participated in bowling, swimming and track & field. He also loved to bowl his spare time.

Tony had a great sense of humor and could light up a room with his joyous smile. He gave the best hugs anyone could give or receive.

Survivors include his mother, Lisa Robidoux (Edward); father, Wm. Brian Atwood of the home; 2 sisters, Jessica Atwood, and Susan Atwood; 2 nieces, NoraLee Langdon, and Brandy Campbell, all of Wetmore, KS.

 He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, George & Ruth Covey, Clyde & Ruth Korb, and Willis & Nora Armstrong; grandmother, Norma Atwood and his great-aunt Paula Atwood.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow at the Wetmore Cemetery. Diane Sue (Kinghorn) Bausch, age 74 of Burchard, passed away Friday, October 2, 2020 at her home.

Survivors include her husband Don Bausch; daughter and son-in-law Amy and Chris Gottula of Burchard; son Clark Bausch of Kearney; grandchildren Isaac, Olivia, Madolyn, Emalyse, and Vanessa Gottula, Joakim, Abbigail, and Savannah Bausch; brother and sister-in-law Bob and Linda Kinghorn of Auburn; other relatives and friends.

A private family service will take place in Sheridan Cemetery at Auburn. Visitation with no viewing will be at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn, Friday, October 9, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00.

Matthew Louis Pohlman Sr., 37, of Falls City, Nebraska was born on August 31, 1983 in McCook, Nebraska to Walter August Jr. and Barbara Ruth (Schawang) Pohlman.  He grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and attended Lincoln public schools.  Matthew then attended Lincoln Northeast High School where he later received his GED.  On July 5, 2006, Matthew was united in marriage to Amanda Goebel in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The couple would later divorce.  Then on April 26, 2014, Matthew was united in marriage to Ashley Hall in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The couple made their home in Falls City where Matthew was a proficient welder J.D. Jackman.  Matthew was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed bow hunting, boating, water skiing and fishing.

Matthew passed away on Friday, September 25, 2020, in New York, New York having reached the earthly age of thirty-seven years and twenty-five days.  He was preceded in death by his father Walter Pohlman Jr., grandmother Twilla Pohlman and grandparents John and Marjorie Schawang.

Left to cherish Matthew’s memory is his loving wife Ashley of Falls City, children: Matthew Pohlman Jr. of Falls City, Cashus Pohlman of Lincoln, Paighton Pohlman of Falls City, Kieson Pohlman of Falls City, Patience Pohlman of Falls City, Kyleigh Pohlman of Falls City, Kane Pohlman of Falls City, Treyson Amen of Lincoln, Jacyana Funk of Amarillo, TX; his mother Barbara Pohlman of rural Hiawatha, KS; brothers: Arron Fritz and wife Pheng of Clairmont, CA; John Pohlman of Falls City, grandfather Walter Pohlman Sr. of Lincoln and many other aunts, uncles, relatives and friends. 

A Celebration of Matthew’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at The Good News Assembly of God Church, 601 Reavis Street, in Falls City, Nebraska with Pastor Tim Boatright officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2020 at The Good News Assembly of God Church, 601 Reavis Street, in Falls City, Nebraska.  Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the church.

Inurnment will be at the Rulo Cemetery at a later date.

George Bernard Gallagher, 86, of Holton, KS, passed away Monday, September 28, 2020 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.  Prior places of residence include Dallas, OR, Mission Viejo, CA, Moreno Valley, CA, Diamond Bar, CA, and California, PA.

George was born October 22, 1933, in California, PA, the son of Charles Gallagher and Elizabeth Morgan Gregg. He was the youngest of seven children, all of whom preceded him in death.

George proudly served in the United States Navy for four years during the Korean Conflict.     

George worked for Douglas Aircraft, Autonetics Space Division and Rockwell International, his career in aerospace spanning work was with the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs.  His expertise in shuttle construction and repair took him all over the U.S., both during his active career and after his official retirement from Rockwell International in 1993. In recognition of his achievements, George received the Astronauts Personal Achievement Award from NASA for his work in the Space Shuttle Space Transportation System Program.  For post-retirement service to NASA, a 1996 letter from NASA’s Jay Greene commends George for “yet another superior accomplishment in the service of your country’s space program,” calling him the “Father of Aft Fuselage Installation.”    

George Gallagher was married to Rita Presutti, who preceded him in death on February 4, 2005.  He was also preceded in death by daughter, Mary Gallagher; daughter, Elizabeth Gallagher and son, Charlie Gallagher.  

Surviving family members include his children, Jim Gallagher of Oregon, Sheri Rodriguez of California, George Gallagher of California, Mark Gallagher of California, Nicole Gallagher of California, Bobby Gallagher of Kansas and also by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ruby Pearl Spaar, 83, of Sabetha, KS, formerly of Holton, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha. Ruby was born November 3, 1936 in Sullivan, IL, the daughter of Edward and Laura (Jenkins) Taylor.

Ruby graduated from Sullivan High School in Sullivan, IL and attended 2 years at Anderson College in Anderson, IN. She was an accounting clerk for Goodyear Tire Company for 21 years.

Ruby was a member of Lakeview Faith Chapel.

She married Richard V. Spaar on July 2, 1959 in Decatur, IL; he preceded her in death on February 28, 2008 after 49 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Eric and Rick Spaar; twin sister, Ruth Matthews; sister, Louise Schott and 2 brothers, Joe and Johnnie Taylor.

 Survivors include her 7 children, Twila Colbert (Matt) of Pensacola, FL, Sheila Askren (Steve) of Holton, KS, Tony Spaar (Sheila) of Louisburg, KS, Doug Spaar (Mavis) of Topeka, KS, Tim Spaar (Teri) of Pace, FL, Angie Spaar of Indian Trail, NC and Laura Aguirre of Holton, KS; daughters-in-law, Lori Spaar of Holton, KS and Norma Spaar of Footville, WI; and blessed with many grandchildren and  great-grandchildren.

Mary Frances (Marsh) Walters, 86 of Excelsior Springs, MO, formerly of Valley Falls, KS passed away Sunday, April 12, 2020 at Excelsior Springs Hospital. She was born May 13, 1933 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of William R. and Mary E. (Simons) Marsh. She was raised in Valley Falls and graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1951 along with her husband-to-be, Jack Walters.

On January 17, 1953 in Kansas City, KS, Mary was united in marriage to Jack L. Walters. They shared over 52 years of marriage before Jack passed away on May 10, 2015.

Mary was employed for over 30 years as a secretary for various businesses, medical clinics, real estate companies and law firms. She was also a member of the Valley Falls VFW Women’s Auxiliary, the Valley Falls Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; 2 brothers, Jerry & Terry Marsh; niece, Jaana Megan Langhus; great-nephew Nathan Herzog, and brother-in-law, Don Bumgarner.

Mary is survived by 2 sisters, Nelle (Ralph) Schneider of Shawnee, KS and Kathy (Lars) Langhus of Smithville, MO; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews.

Wanda Lou [Schmitt] Lowe of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2020 at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, KS.

She was born on March 6, 1932 in Powhattan, KS, the daughter of Ralph H. and Vertie L. [Williams] Schmitt.  She graduated from Powhattan High School, then attended Stormont Vail School of Nursing and later graduated from McPherson Technical School as an LPN.  Wanda's nursing passion was in the geriatrics field, which lead her to positions in several long-term care facilities while living in western Kansas.

Wanda was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church, actively singing in the choir, and participating with many other church functions. Wanda was also involved in clubs and activities in the communities she lived in. She loved reading and playing the piano and spending time with her six children and grandchildren.  On March 25, 1951 she married Kaye Don Lowe at the Powhatan Methodist Church. They were married for 52 years.

Survivors include Michael Lowe, Huntsville, AL; Gail [Jim] Streeter, Everest, KS; Denise [Tracy] Streeter, Lawrence, KS; and Jon [Diana] Lowe, Paul [Terri] Lowe, and Ralph Lowe, all of Reno, NV.  She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Kaye Don who passed on August 11, 2003; grandsons Casey Lowe and Joshua Lowe; sisters Bernice and Marian and brother Bernard.
