Zac Vice, 65, of Verdon, NE, passed away June 29, 2022 at Verdon. He was born April 29, 1957 at Falls City, NE to Don and Shirley (Bragg) Vice.

Zac graduated Southeast Consolidated High School at Shubert, NE in 1976. As a young man he worked on oil rigs for several years before joining his dad in his construction business. Ultimately, Zac went on to start his own construction business. He was a member of Good News Assembly of God Church and Brownville Historical Society.

Zac is survived by his wife Kathy of Verdon, daughter, Rachael Griess and her significant other, Robin, sons, Brent Twyman and his wife Diedre, Wesley Twyman and his wife Megan, brothers, Noah and his wife Carrie, Montana and his wife Patty, sister, Christy Berglund and her husband Ray, mother, Shirley, grandchildren, Lukas who was like a young son to him, Jake and Blake, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, L. D. Vice, mother-in-law, Josephine Shiley.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Good News Assembly of God Church with Pastor Tim Boatright officiating. Interment will be in Harris Cemetery.

 Robert LeRoy “Bob” Williamson, 94, of Holton, KS, formerly of Netawaka, KS, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2022 at The Pines. He was born February 8, 1928 in Grantville, KS, the son of Everette and Nona (Townsend) Williamson.

          Bob attended Grantville Grade School and graduated from Turner High School (Kansas City, KS) in 1946. He attended Finley Engineering College in Kansas City, KS, earning his Associated Degree. After graduation, he proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, honorably discharged as Sargent.

          He lived in Basehor community for 20 years and settling in Netawaka, KS. Bob was a farmer and stockman. He also worked for Eldridge Construction in Kansas City, KS as a General Superintendent. He enjoyed fishing and wood furniture building.

          He attended Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton and Netawaka United Methodist Church.

          Bob married Carol Joy Clark on June 11, 1950 at Grinter Heights in Kansas City, KS. She preceded him in death on May 6, 2007; after 56 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Everette and Nona Williamson; sister, Jessie Mildred Williamson and a brother, Everette Williamson, Jr.

          Survivors include his children, Patricia L. Sorensen (Gary) of Holton, KS, Jerry W. Williamson (Sharon) of Tonganoxie, KS, Nanette Williamson of Holton, KS and Lonnie R. Williamson (Kathy) of Conifer, CO; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Beverly Sue Hollingsworth, 74, Atchison, KS, died Sunday June 26, 2022 at 11:57 PM in her home surrounded by her family.

Susan Kay Gilkison, 74 of Wichita, Kansas, formerly of Effingham, Kansas, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022.

She was born on August 31, 1947 in Horton, Kansas, the daughter of Jack and Lorraine Rosenhoover Bechtold. Susan graduated from Stormont Vail Nursing Diploma Program in 1968. It was here that she met her husband, Richard Gilkison. They were married at St. Leo's Catholic Church on August 3, 1968. She worked many years at the Horton Community Hospital and Atchison Hospital as a registered nurse and in administration. She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. Susan enjoyed doing many activities with her grandchildren including cooking, gardening and reading. They lived happily on their farm in rural Effingham for nearly 50 years. In 2018, she moved to Wichita, Kansas to receive the necessary care for her Alzheimer's disease.

Survivors include four daughters, Beth (Jason) Haden of Spring, Texas, Julie (Chris) Lockwood of Horton, Kansas, Angie (Eric) Becker of Augusta, Kansas, and Dana (Lou) Tolbert of Hiawatha, Kansas; a son, Arthur Gilkison (Darren Bell) of Denver, Colorado; twelve grandchildren, six great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Bechtold of Topeka, Kansas, and Jane (Casey) Walsh of Denton, Kansas, three brothers, Galen (Luci) Bechtold of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Bruce (Judy) Bechtold of Horton, Kansas, and Jay Bechtold of Horton, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Richard.

A rosary will be read at 10:30 AM at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas on Friday, July 1, 2022 with a funeral mass to follow at 11:00 AM. A private burial will be held at a later date. Carolyn Hilgenfeld, 73, of Lincoln, NE, passed away June 26, 2022 at Lincoln at Bryan West Hospice, attended by Mindy and Monica, two wonderful nurses that deserve a very special thanks. She was born May 8, 1949 at Sabetha, KS to Eugene and Pansie (Brunner) Chandler.

She married Don Hilgenfeld on April 5, 1969 at Hiawatha, KS

Carolyn attended school in Morrill, KS, Gravois Mills, MO and graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1968. When married the couple established their home in Gulfport, MS until Don’s deployment to Vietnam. She returned to Hiawatha in the fall of 1969 and to the family farm located on the Kansas-Nebraska state line following don’t discharge from service. They later moved back to Hiawatha when Don began trucking over the road. They moved to Beatrice, NE in 1980 and to Lincoln in 2012 where she resided at the time of death.

She enjoyed traveling around the Midwest to her daughter’s softball games for many years. She really enjoyed her grandchildren; baby sat and took care of them often. Family was very important to her and made many trips to Lincoln from Beatrice before moving there. She also enjoyed her son Scott’s family as they traveled around the world as international school teachers and their many other excursions they took in that process. She enjoyed following their documentation on Facebook. She also enjoyed scrapbooking and crafting, traveling and taking many trips, including; Grand Canyon, CO, Smoky Mountain and Blue Ride Parkway by motorcycle, Niagara Falls; both the U. S. and Canada side and up the California Coast Highway from Hearst to Golden Gate and to the Giant Redwood Forest which were bucket list trips. She also enjoyed many trips with her husband while he drove a semi truck.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Don of Lincoln, children, Michelle Dewes and her husband Doug of Lincoln, Scott and his wife Ivy of Monessen, PA, grandchildren, Chandler, Chase and Mikala Drewes and Azarya “Zoe” Hilgenfeld, brother, Steve (Kathy) Chandler, sisters: Connie (Duane) Widman, Christine Chandler-Ballew, Cindy (James) Reynolds, sisters-in-law: Linda Chandler, Pat (Bob) Stowers, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews all which meant the world to her. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gary Chandler in 2017.

Eunice Velma Duttweiler, 89, of Atchison, KS, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, MO.

Eunice was born January 25, 1933 in Troy, KS, the daughter of Herman and Martha (Benitz) Gaul. She went to grade school and high school in Severance. Eunice was a cheerleader in high school, played basketball, sang in a girls’ choir in school. She took a correspondence course in accounting from Emporia State College. After graduation she worked at Dannen Mills Office, St. Joseph, MO. In 1954 she moved to Atchison, KS and worked in the County Treasury’s Office for seven and half years, Meyer Nuzum and Stecher’s Accounting Firm and finally in the payroll office at Midwest Grain Products for twenty-one years. She also worked part time as a tour guide at Cray Museum. In 1995 she took over the Sugar Cone Ice Cream Store in East Atchison (MO) and ran that for twenty-eight years, along with Quality Fireworks and Dee’s Christmas Trees. Eunice and her husband owned rental property in Atchison and Missouri and worked hard on that to keep things going. She traveled many places with her husband in Masonic functions. She was a member of Martha Washington Chapter #215, Atchison Order of the Eastern Star, past Worthy Matron many times and held many other offices. She was Past Grand Adah of the Grand Chapter of Kansas from 1980 to 1981. Past Grand Representative of Vermont in Kansas OES and had many committee appointments in Grand Chapter OES. Eunice was also Past Supreme Officer in the Supreme Assembly, Order of Beauceant. She was a member of Social Order of the Beauceat Assembly No. 24, Topeka, KS and dual member with Social Order of the Beauceat St. Joseph Assemble No. 123, St. Joseph, MO. In 1997 Eunice and her husband traveled with the Knights Templars on a tour to the Holy Land, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. In 2007 in celebration of their fifty years of marriage traveled to England, France, Switzerland, and Italy.

Eunice married Deeis Duttweiler on February 19, 1956, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Atchison, KS. Both are members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison, where Eunice served on Church Council, Social Ministry, fundraisers, and funeral dinners.

Her husband Dee of sixty-six years survives of the home. Additional survivors include nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Preceded her in death were her parents Herman and Martha Gaul, two brothers Norman Gaul and Edgar Gaul a sister Lorene Rawles and in laws Fred and Irena Duttweiler.

Eunice loved to meet new people and never met a stranger, always had a smile on her face.

Kimberly “Kim” Cole, 66, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 23, 2022 at Falls City. She was born December 24, 1955 at Enid, OK to Dwight and Nancy (Usher) Morrison.

She was married to David Mason and later divorced. She was married to Jim Cole and later divorced.

Kim was raised and graduated from high school in Enid, OK. Once graduated she married David Mason and moved to Kansas, they later divorced. She met and married Jim Cole and moved to Falls City. She worked in the restaurant industry. Once she was unable to care for herself due to an illness, she resided at the Falls City Care Center.

Kim is survived by her children Amy Allen and her husband Russell, Michael Smith of Seneca, KS and Bessie Smith of Lincoln, Ne, mother Nancy Morrison and brother Chris Morrison and his wife Charlotte, all from Nixa, MO, and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father.

Kim has been cremated and will have a private memorial service at Snapp Cemetery at Forsythe, MO at a later date.

Harry O. Lewis. 75, of Hiawatha, entered this life January 14, 1947 at Highland, one of six children born to Lawrence and Margaret Walton Lewis.  Harry departed this life peacefully with family by his side Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Amberwell Hiawatha.

Harry was a man who did a lot of little odd jobs for a lot of people around the Hiawatha area over the years as well as working full time and coaching when his kids were younger. He made many friends along the way because he was a kind hearted soul that would do anything for anyone. Some may have known him from Flair-Fold/Abitibi-Price days, others may have recognized him as a fixture in the janitorial staff at the Hiawatha Middle School from several years ago. Harry loved working around the kids and was proud to support the Hiawatha sports programs during his time at the school. It was no secret that Harry was a big sports fan.

Through the highs and the lows he was a true fan and may have turned a game or 2 off in disgust one day but would always tune in for that next game. He was always adorned with Royals, Chiefs, KU, and local High school sports gear in support of his grandkids. Those that knew Harry probably also knew a lot about his family that he was always more than excited to talk to anyone about at length. Family meant more to Harry than anything in the world. He was so proud of all of Brenda and his blended family kids, grand kids, and great grand kids who are just devastated at the loss of such an amazing man and family member.

Harry was a simple man who loved everyone so come as you are to celebrate his life with us maybe choose to wear something from one of his favorite teams in honor of him. If you knew him you know he would have loved that.

Survivors include his wife Brenda (Martin) of the home; children Troy Lewis (Michelle), Jennifer Thomas (Bob), Nathan Smith (Rose), Trace Smith (Casey), Randy Smith, Ana Wisdom (Rick), Gary Folsom (Della), Greg Folsom (Angie), and Gerald Folsom Jr (Paula);  siblings:  Larry Lewis, Alice Zahner, Marcia Adams (Dan), Barbara Argabright (Jim); 20 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren with another due in November.

He was  preceded in death by his parents, brothers in law George Powell, Jerry Zahner, sister Mary Powell; sisters in law Doris Lewis, Cathy Lewis, and nephew Kris Lewis.

A Celebration of Harry’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, June 30, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, with Jason Drahota officiating. Cremation will follow service with private inurnment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Robinson.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Wednesday where the family will visit from 6 until 8 that evening.

Nancy Darlene Groshong, 79, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas.

She was born on September 29, 1942 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Grace Statler Polson. Nancy graduated from Derby High School. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for her husband's tow truck company. Nancy also volunteered at the deaf children schools in Olathe, Kansas and enjoyed playing cards. On August 31, 1961 she married Max Edward Groshong in Wichita, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband Max Groshong, two sons, Robert Dale Groshong and Gene Edward Groshong, daughter, Tracy Bartley and grandson, Josh Groshong.

Survivors include a brother, Bob Polson of Derby, Kansas; sister, Doretta Thomas of Derby, Kansas; two grandchildren, Corin McKeown and Danny Groshong.

Adam James Carlson, 39, of Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at his home.

He was born on September 14, 1982 in Horton, Kansas, the son of James & Wilma Richard Carlson. Adam graduated from Horton High School in 2001. Adam worked as the Bingo Supervisor for the Sac-N-Fox Casino. He loved playing video games and spending time with his children.

Survivors include his mother, Wilma Carlson of Horton, Kansas; three sons, Devin Carlson, William Carlson and Kyle Carlson; two daughters, Emily Carlson and Zoey Carlson; brother, Chris (Susanne) Carlson of Hiawatha, Kansas; half-brother, Jamie Carlson; niece, Jocelyn Carlson and nephew, Kavan Carlson. He was preceded in death by his father, James Carlson and a brother, Brandon Carlson.

Donald Eugene Kloepper, 84, of Effingham, KS passed away peacefully on Monday, June 20, 2022, at the DHR Hospital in Edinburg, Tx surrounded by his wife and children.

Don was born on July 20, 1937, to Louis and Clarissa Jane (Walker) Kloepper on the family farm in Old Huron, KS.  He graduated from ACCHS in 1955.  While attending school he was a highly decorated basketball player and enjoyed KU basketball his whole life.

Don married Karen Sue Thompson on June 30, 1957.  To this union there were four children born.  He married Brenda Lee (Bolt) on September 10, 1999 and acquired two bonus children.  Don was passionate about and farmed most of his life.  He worked as the Road and Bridge Foreman in Atchison County, KS for several years until he retired in 1997.

Don farmed for nearly 40 years and was a member of the Atchison County Young Farmers Organization.  He served on the #60 School Board until unification, #377 school board and served terms as president and vice president.  He served on the Effingham Union Church Board and the Atchison County Farm Bureau Board.  He also served on the Atchison County soil conservation board. Don served his country in the Army National guard from 1955 to 1958 with the 137th infantry.  Don loved the places that Geocaching took him.  “Whopper and B” put out over 180 caches, including the Bridges of Atchison County series.  

Don was very active in tractor pulling using his Jollie Ollie and his John Deere 4020.  The story is still going around about the runaway 4020 tractor at the Horton Tractor Pull.

Surviving him are his wife Brenda and his children; Gregory (Lori) Kloepper, Kirk (Laurie) Kloepper, Jeanne (David) Weber, Shawn Kloepper, Wayne (Linda) Enloe, Robin (Robert) Hurd.  13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, his loving dog Benji and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.   Don was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and six sisters.  

James “Jim” LaVere Fund, 79, of Horton, KS, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022 at his home. Jim was born March 10, 1943 in Sabetha, KS, the son of Mirl Edwin and Amanda Jane (Potts) Fund. He was raised in Goff where four of the twelve students in class were his cousins!

As a teenager, he worked as a farm-hand for Joe and Alice Patterson, who later became his in-laws.

Jim was a wonderfully kind and soft-spoken father to his four children he raised with his first wife, Marsha, on their farm in Netawaka.

He worked as a welder at BMB, painted homes and barns all over NE Kansas, and worked at Jackson Farmers’ Coop for over 31 years retiring as Store Manager.

He loved animals and woodworking, making all types of bird and squirrel feeders and was admired by family and mail carriers alike for his elaborate barn mail boxes. He enjoyed his retirement in Horton with wife, June (Cattrell) Fund.

Jim married June Cattrell on September 4, 1992 at Whiting Lake. They have celebrated over 29 years of marriage.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Amanda and Mirl Fund and children, William and Joe Fund, step-father Ed Nonnast, and step-brother, Lonnie Nonnast.

He is survived by his wife, June of the home; brother, Jodie Fund of Emporia, KS; step-brother, Bill Nonnast (Linda) of Hiawatha, KS; children, Marsene Feldt (Nate) of Lawrence, KS, Charlene Moran (Richard) of Topeka, KS, Scott Fund of Holton, KS; daughter-in-law, Andrea Brock (Fund) of Oldsburg, KS; step-children, John Webster (Michelle) of Holden, MO, and Mike Webster (Annie) of Kansas City, MO.

Carole Joanne (Whitney) Brindley, 83, of Falls City, Nebraska was born January 18, 1939, in Dawson, Nebraska to Guy and Veronica Faye (Watton) Whitney.  She was raised with her family in Dawson, Nebraska and attended school there graduating from Dawson High School with the class of 1955.  Carole was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 1939 and later confirmed in 1955 by Bishop Kucera in Lincoln, Nebraska.  On December 27, 1957, Carole was united in marriage to Harry Brindley in Lincoln, Nebraska.  To this union five children, Patrick, Michelle, Kathleen, Jennifer and John were raised.  Carole received her nursing degree later in life and she worked for many years as a nurse for various nursing agencies in California.

Carole passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the Falls City Care Center in Falls City, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of eighty-three years, four months, thirteen days.  She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Michelle Dixon.  She is survived by her loving children: Patrick Brindley of Upland, CA; Kathleen Leighton and husband Dr. Tom of Temecula, CA; Jennifer Saedi and husband Darryl of Eastvale, CA; John Brindley and wife Heather of Sacramento, CA; grandchildren: Nathan and Noah Saedi of Eastvale, CA; Andrew and Olivia Leighton of Temecula, CA; Joshua Casner of Upland, CA; Kyle Brindley of Sacramento, CA; great-granddaughter Maylee Casner of Upland, CA; sisters: Elaine Jarvis and husband Jerry of Colorado Springs, CO; Jean Swink and husband Don of Camano Island, WA; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Carole’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at the Assembly of God Church in Falls City, Nebraska with Pastor Tim Boatright officiating.

Private family inurnment will follow services at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Dawson, Nebraska.

Richard V. Wheeler Jr., 93, of Hamburg, Iowa formerly of Shubert, Nebraska was born on November 25, 1928, in rural Howe, Nebraska to Richard V. Sr. and Helen (Andrew) Wheeler.  He was raised with his family near Stella where he attended school and graduated from Stella High School. 

On January 1, 1950, Richard was united in marriage to Joanne Nelson at the home of Grandma Gilbert in Stella, Nebraska and two children, Shari and Bruce arrived to this union.  Dick farmed for many years before he owned and operated his own trucking business in Shubert, Nebraska.  After Joanne passed away in 1991, Dick moved to Hamburg, Iowa where he was united in marriage to LaVonne Lunzmann.  The couple resided in Hamburg for many years before LaVonne passed away.  Richard had a strong love for his family and always lent an ear to anyone, easily engaging in conversation.  He loved morning coffee time with the kids and conversations to be had at the kitchen table hearing about everything going on.  Dick was always up for an adventure/road trip to see something or to get something.  He loved traveling the country, seeing things and loved talking about it.

Richard passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at the Tabor Manor in Tabor, Iowa having reached the earthly age of 93 years, 6 months and 28 days.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joanne, brothers Hobert “Hobe” and Keith Wheeler, sisters-in-law Elaine Wheeler and Becky Nelson and brother-in-law Richard “Dick” Behrends.

Richard is survived by his children: Shari Wheeler of Shenandoah, IA; Bruce Wheeler, Michael Wheeler and wife Liv of Hamburg, IA; Jamie Wheeler of Hamburg, IA; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister Mary Helen Behrends of Stella, NE; sisters-in-law Joan Wheeler of Stella, NE; Norma Stinson of Tecumseh, NE; brother-in-law Jerry Nelson of Verdon, NE; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at the Bedford Cemetery in Howe, Nebraska with Pastor John States officiating.

Eleanor Louise Hottman, 78, of Horton, Kansas formerly of Whiting, Kansas, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2022 at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas.

She was born on February 21, 1944 in Burnham, Missouri, the daughter of Guy and Katherine Jones Schmidt. She was a homemaker and helped her parents at their bakery in her earlier years. On April 17, 1976 she married Dallas Louis Hottman in Netawaka, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 24, 2001.

Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Pirone of Ogden, Kansas and three grandchildren, Joshua Riggs Hartford, Destiny Riggs both of Burlington, Kansas, Courtney Riggs of Ogden, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews. Eleanor was also preceded in death by a sister, Kay Duncan.

Dennis Joe Beyer, 64, of rural Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on June 22, 2022.

He was born on July 8, 1957 in Sabetha, Kansas, the son of Charles and JoAnn Keim Beyer. Dennis graduated from Central High School in 1975 and then attended Missouri Western. He was an over the road truck driver, most recently for Keim Trucking. Dennis enjoyed gardening and spending time with his grandchildren in his spare time. On September 9, 1979 he married Sue Salverson at the Everest Zion Lutheran Church, they were married for over forty two years.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Beyer of the home; two daughters, Kristin Beyer of Horton, Kansas and Stefanie (Jared) Wilson of rural Hiawatha, Kansas; son, Marc (Erin) Beyer of rural Hiawatha, Kansas; five grandchildren, Sam, Maggie, Allie, Eli, Emmerson and one on the way; sister, Mary Bonkoski of Marceline, Missouri; three brothers, Mike Beyer of Blue Springs, Missouri, Doug Beyer of Topeka, Kansas and Alan Beyer of Shawnee, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant children, Scott Michael, Shawn Kevin and Natalie Renee.

The family will greet friends on Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. A private family burial will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. David James “Dave” Blazic, Sr, 85, of rural Topeka, died Friday, June 24, 2022 at the University of Kansas St. Francis Campus.

Dave was born July 17, 1936 at Fond du Lac, WI, the son of Frank and Marie Hoard Blazic.  He lived in Kansas 65 years, moving from Sheboygan, WI.  He attended schools in Big Bend, OR. At  age 17, he enlisted in the U.S Air Force and served as Flight Mechanic 20 years, five months and five days from October 23, 1958 to April 1, 1974, he served in Thailand, Udorn, Viet Nam, Thule, and Greenland for 378 days before retiring from the Air Force. 

A mechanic all his life, after Air Force  retirement,  Dave worked for the State of Kansas, Kansas Neurological Institute, Jackson County and the City of Topeka before retiring in 1995. Dave is a member of the Meriden Community Church, American Legion Post #400, Topeka and served as a ReLiv Ambassador. Dave was a collector of old tractors and has 15 in his collection, the oldest is a 1932 model with a crank or fly wheel start.

 He married Betty Lou Lawrence Towne Humbert on August 31, 1991 in Topeka, She survives at the home. He is also survived by three sons, David J. Blazic, JR, Tenn, Michael (Cathy) Blazic, Hoyt, Daniel (Alayna) Blazic, Elkton, VA, a step-daughter, Sherry (Jim) Reser, Topeka, a step son, Rodney (Tracy) Humbert, Topeka, one brother, Thomas Blazic, Colorado Springs, CO,  14  grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Don Blazic and Joseph Blazic.
 

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, June 30, 2022 at Meriden Community Church, Meriden. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, June 29 at the Church. Georgia Rhodd, 67, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 23, 2022 at Falls City. She was born December 19, 1954 at Hiawatha, KS to William and Wanda (Sisk) Rhodd.

Georgia was raised in White Cloud, KS until moving to Falls City where she attended Falls City High School. Following her schooling she worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and The Iowa Tribe of Kansas where she served in many positions and capacities. She enjoyed cooking, singing karaoke, and time with her family. She was a member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas.

Georgia is survived by her sisters, Wanda Craig and Marguerite Packett and her husband Patrick all of Falls City, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Jerry and Ronnie, great-niece, Tanya Craig and a great-nephew, J. D. Lundsford.

It was Georgia’s wish to be cremated and a graveside service will be held on Friday, July 8, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Steele Cemetery.

Marvin E. Smith, 94, of Topeka, passed away on June 23, 2022. He was born August 19, 1927 at Christ Hospital, Topeka, Kansas, the son of W. Edwin and Erma Issacs Smith. He grew up in the Hoyt community and graduated from Hoyt Rural High School in 1945. He attended Kansas State University from 1947 to 1951 and graduated in May of 1951. While at K State he was a member of National Livestock Judging Team that placed first in the nation in 1950.

He married Shirley Joanne Voelker on August 4, 1951 at the home of her parents, Paul and Wilma Holt Voelker, of Hoyt, Kansas by his brother-in-law Rev. Harold Brown.

He taught the Veterans on the Farm class at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas from August 1951 to August 1952. He was a teacher of Vocational Agriculture and FFA Advisor at Seaman High School from September 1952 to May of 1965. He was elected to the first Unified School District 345 school board and served as a school board member from April 1965 until 1975. In November 1980 he was elected to represent the 50th district of Kansas in the House of Representatives from 1980 until 1994.

Marvin and Shirley moved to the present farm they named Sunnyside in April 1955 in northeast Shawnee County. They operated a Grade A dairy for 25 years with the help of their children. They since have had a beef cow/calf herd of Angus cows.

He was a member of Hoyt Baptist Church, Shawnee County Farm Bureau, and Kansas Livestock Association. Marvin and Shirley were selected and received the Kansas Master Farmer and Master Farm Homemaker award in 1988.

Marvin is survived by his wife Shirley; children, Connie Jean Smith, Topeka, Ben (Ramona) Smith, Topeka, Donna Marie Smith, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and Jim (Elizabeth) Smith, Winter Garden, Florida; six grandchildren: Jennifer (Al) Davis, Curt Hermann, Brandon (Leah) and Blake (Melissa) Smith, Brock (Laura) and Chanel Smith (Elijah); nine great grandchildren; nephew, Bob Brown and niece, Linda (H.D.) McCarty.

Marvin was preceded in death by their daughter Judy Ann in 1961, his infant siblings, Wilbur and Mary Alice, his parents, Erma and Edwin, and his sister, Helen Marie Brown.

Geary D. Engemann, 78, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Friday, June 24, 2022, at his home. 

Geary was born on April 17, 1944, at Fort Riley, Kansas to Walter W. and Margaret L. (Gummig) Engemann.  He was a lifelong resident of Wathena where he graduated from Wathena High School in 1962, Northwest Missouri State University in 1967 with a BS, then 1989 with a master’s degree from Kansas State University.  Geary began teaching at Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1967, he then moved to Wathena High School and taught from 1970 until his retirement in 2001.  Geary also owned & operated Engemann Service from 1970 until 2018. 

He has been a member at the First Baptist Church in Wathena since 1967, where he served as a deacon, moderator, worship leader and various other rolls for many years.  Geary also served on the Wathena City Council. 

Geary married Linda Walter on June 6, 1964.  She survives of the home.  Geary was preceded in death by his parents.

Emma Joanne Bodenhausen, age 88 formerly of Effingham, KS, was born April 25, 1934, to William and Doris (Strine) Sharp at their home in Monrovia. Kansas.  She married David Bodenhausen July 27, 1951, at her parents’ home in Monrovia. He preceded her in death on March 31, 2014. They enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and the Holy Land completed their dream. She worked alongside her husband on the family farm; sewed many garments for the girls, had a big garden, which led to canning, and enjoyed trying new recipes. She also liked to plant some new flowers each year, trying different ones.  Her love for music led her in younger years to sing for weddings and funerals. She was a member of the Effingham Union Church and a faithful alto in choir for many years. She also taught Sunday School classes, was a youth leader, member of the Women’s Society at Church and baked many pies for the Church fair stand.  She enjoyed keeping up with the girls and their many activities and later the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

She is survived by her brother, Archie (Kristine) Sharp, Creston, NE; daughters: Vicki (Steve) Jones, Bendena; Tammy (Craig) Gigstad, Winchester; and Jayne (Todd) Wehking, Lancaster. Grandchildren: Rochelle (Tony) Schuetz, Stephanie Jones; Derek (Laura) Gigstad; Danae (Justin) Lillie; Devin (Derek) Brey; Courtney (Joe) Klepees; Troy (Danielle) Wehking; Great-Grandchildren: Hailey, James, Taygen, Josie, Braylee, Jack, Ryker, Axton, Blakely, Collins, Beckett, Brigham, Logan, Baby Klepees and Tyce.   

Terry Tisdel, 71, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 22, 2022 at Falls City. He was born January 3, 1951 at Falls City to Wayne and Darlene (Rieschick) Tisdel.

He married Linda Halterman on August 23, 1972 at Independence, MO

Terry was raised at Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School in 1969. When he was 19 he took employment with Union Pacific Railroad, he worked his way to becoming a conductor and in 2011 he retired after 41 years. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin, hunting and fishing. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 20th and Towle St., he was a 50-year member of Falls City Elks Lodge and the NRA.

Terry is survived by his wife, Linda of Falls City, children, Traci Carpenter and her husband Josh of Falls City, T. C. and his wife Randee of Falls City, Tammy Burns and her husband Gary of St. Joseph, MO, Kenny Schawang and his wife Michell of Verdon, NE, nineteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 from 6-8:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

Gloria June Sanner, 87, of Fairview, Kansas was gathered into the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, and a multitude of family and friends on Sunday, June 19, 2022, while her earthly family lovingly said goodbye.

Gloria was born on August 19, 1934, the daughter of Lester and Fern (Shower) Money in Chicago, IL. Gloria spent her first years in Chicago until the family moved to a farm north of Holton, KS, where she attended Hazel School, a country school, finishing the 2nd grade. The family then moved to Brown County where Gloria completed her elementary education at Mulberry School about five miles north of where she would eventually raise her family. Following 8th grade, Gloria, her brother, Lewis, and her parents moved to California to work as seasonal farm workers. During this time, Gloria attended Weed High School near Mt. Shasta, Shafter High School, near Bakersfield, and Chaffey High School near San Bernardino. Returning to the Morrill, KS area where her dad farmed, Gloria completed her sophomore, junior, and senior years graduating with the Morrill High School class of 1952.

Gloria became a redeemed daughter of God on September 26, 1952, and was baptized into the Morrill Baptist Church family on October 5, 1952, having been led to her Savior by her grandmother.

On Valentine’s Day 1954, Gloria married her high school classmate and eternal sweetheart, Glenn Eldon Sanner. Over the course of their 66 years of marriage, Glenn and Gloria made their home in Morrill, KS, Maple Hill, KS, Brush, CO, in rural Hiawatha, KS, and Fairview, KS. Glenn and Gloria’s family grew to six with the birth of one son and three daughters. Later she was blessed with a daughter-in-law and three sons-in-law, six grandsons, one granddaughter, five great-grandsons, and four great-granddaughters. Gloria was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, joyfully sharing all of their accomplishments.

Before her marriage, Gloria worked at the Morrill Bank and was a clerk for the City of Morrill. As her children grew older, Gloria was an Avon representative, a waitress at the Hollabaugh Café in Powhattan, KS and worked at the Wonder Bread Thrift Store in Hiawatha for 21 years, first as a cashier, and then as the store manager until her retirement in 1997. Outside the home, Gloria was active at the Delaware Baptist Church i Fairview and later returned to their home church in Morrill. She was known for her beautiful, high vibrato voice which she shared in church, at weddings and funerals, as a soloist, in duets, quartets, and choirs. In addition to her talents in music, Gloria was a Sunday school teacher well into her seventies, a Vacation Bible School teacher, church secretary, deaconess, 4-H sewing teacher, and volunteer at the Morrill Community Coffeehouse. After supporting her family in all their endeavors, Gloria’s favorite pastimes were reading, cooking for her family, sewing, embroidery, gardening, and caring for her flowers. She also enjoyed baking and decorating cakes to celebrate special occasions for family and friends.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Fern Money; her beloved husband, Glenn E. Sanner; and a brother, Lewis Money.

Gloria is survived by her son, Tim (Vicky) Sanner of Willis, KS; her three daughters, Teresa (Brad) Grier of Powhattan, KS, Evelyn (Sherman) Dodge and Joyce (Dana) Kesler all of Fairview, KS. Grieving their grandmother and great-grandmother are Jeremy Dodge of Kansas City, MO; Travis, Charissa, Lillie, and Ian Dodge of St. Joseph, MO; Zach, Jen, Aubrey, and Jace Kesler of Stockton, KS; Kristin, Dan, Drew, and Beau Longfellow of Broken Bow, NE; Brice, Lindsey, Dexter, and Margaux Sanner of Andover, KS; Jordan, Kaitlyn, and Everleigh Sanner of Colorado Springs, CO; Nick Sanner of Madison, MS; two sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Luke E. Scheidt, 51, of Hiawatha, formerly of Lincoln, NE, died June 16, 2022, from injuries received from a motorcycle accident west of Reserve.

Luke was born August 14, 1970 at Topeka, KS,  the son of Randy and Connie Grant Scheidt and grew up in and around Lincoln, Nebraska.  He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1988.  He worked hard and played hard.  He loved playing football and will still laugh, reminisce, and relive moments from the hay day when he played on Varsity. 

Luke attended some college, he was a ‘jack of all trades’ kind of guy.  He was proud of his Handyman business however small, that he had in Lincoln for a short time.

Luke loved motorcycles and cars.  He sometimes bragged about his crazy stunts, yet would encourage others to be a “Safety Sam.”  He loved fishing and talking about the big one he was going to catch next, and could fish all day and night.

Luke was in a relationship in which his heart still loved and cared about the kids to this day.  Billie, Chris, and Amanda Knickerbacher.

He moved with his wife Julie to Hiawatha and started a quiet less hustle and bustle life.  He encouraged his wife to succeed at her career at the local hospital and would brag to family and friends as positions changed for her.

Preceded in death by grandparents, aunts, and uncles, and a grandchild, Micah King Dieter.

Survivors include his wife Julie (Farber), children Kailey Starlin, Oksanna (Jake) Normandea, James Stewart, Josie Stewart, Steven Dieter, Mother Connie Fager (Glenn), Father Randy Scheidt (Mickey), Sister Tracie Adams, Brother Scott Hurst (Marley), grandchildren Cecelia, Wayne, Everlee, Ellie and Zaiden, niece Maizy, nephews Hayden and Caden.

Lonnie Howard Herrick, 78, of Steinauer, Nebraska died Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Pawnee County Memorial Hospital. He was born to Howard and Marguerite (Clark) Herrick on January 21, 1944. He attended country school for two years before moving to Table Rock Public School where he graduated in 1962. Lonnie then joined the Army Reserves attending basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Upon his return, he drove a cement truck for Binder Brothers for six years while also helping his dad and brothers farm. It was during this time that he met his wife, Frannie Gyhra. They were married on August 9, 1969, at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Steinauer, Nebraska. To this marriage were born 4 children: Dee, Jody, Kelly and John. They lived on a farm north of Table Rock for 19 years before moving to Steinauer.

Lonnie had a love of the land and spent his life farming. He also raised cattle and hogs. He once said no one lived closer to God than a farmer. He also enjoyed playing cards, having a beer with friends and anything doing with mechanics.

Lonnie is proceeded in death by his parents, brother Gary Herrick, his parents-in-law, Leonard and Adelaide Gyhra, brother-in-law Wayne Schulenberg and nephew Bradley Brewer. Herb Lash, age 97 of Auburn, passed away Friday, June 17, 2022, in Lincoln. He was preceded in death by hie wife Joan and his son Phillip.

Billie Mackey, 57, of Dawson, NE, passed away June 18, 2022 at Omaha, NE. She was born August 13, 1964 at Falls City to Bill and Betty (Duerfeldt) Hersh.

She married Danny Lundy on May 31, 1988 at Sycamore Springs, KS and they were later divorced. She then married Steve Mackey on January 14, 2000 at Falls City

Billie was raised at Falls City and attended Falls City High School. Following her schooling she worked doing in home healthcare and then became employed at Smart Chicken at Tecumseh, NE and then for Subway at Falls City. Her final job was that of a caretaker for the mentally disabled. She enjoyed crafting with wood.

Billie is survived by her husband, Steve of Dawson, daughters, Heather Johnson and her husband Justin of Nemaha, NE, Hollie Brezinka and her husband Adam of Big Lake, MN, Chelsey Lundy of Auburn, sisters, Carol King and her husband Jim of Omaha, Donna Simpson and her husband John of Falls City and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Danny “Trea” Lundy.

Billie has been cremated and the family will have services at a later date.

William Edward Gomer, affectionately known as "Bill", was born in Stockton, CA on August 14, 1940 to William Edward Sr. & Lois Gomer. Shortly after his birth they moved to Tampa, FL, where Lois would remarry to Emmet Strickland. Bill and his sister Gerraldine would retain the Gomer name.

Bill fell in love with saddlemaking and harness making at an early age, as his adopted father and grandfather were both cobblers, harness, and saddelmakers. Bill worked around his father's shop at the tender age of five, punching holes for stitching. Working on horse tack to elephant training harnesses for the famed Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, then headquartered in Sarasota, FL near Bill's home.

Bill admitted that his father was a good teacher, but often discouraged him from going into the family business. He felt that the "Horse and Buggy" days were over, plus his father didn't want to share his many years of knowledge with young Bill. So at the tender age of fifteen, Bill sought out what he desired most- Knowledge! He openly admits to "Hoboing" on trains, from his home in Tampa, FL to Pendelton, OR to the home of the Hamley Brothers Saddlery, the "Cadillac" of custom saddles.

During a hard earned apprenticeship, Bill learned a very valuable skill, the sharing of secrets! He was often frustrated that the older makers and artists disliked sharing knowledge or skills. At that defining point, he swore that he would share his knowledge with anyone and everyone, he didn't care. He thought that if you've got a secret and you are going to take it with you to the grave, it wasn't worth it. There shouldn't be any secrets.

Bill entered the United States Army in 1963, he was trained as a M-113 Gavin APC driver, and assigned to the 172nd Infantry Brigade, at Ft. Richardson, AK. He disliked working in the armor battalion, but fate was smiling on him one day while passing the base craft shop. During a freehand leathercarving demonstration, the commanding officer of Army Forces in Alaska was so impressed with his skill, he transferred him that day. He became the Arts and Crafts Supervisor for Ft. Richardson.

Between the years of 1963 & 1965, Bill worked as a Arts and Craft Specialist. On March 27th, 1964, during the "Good Friday Earthquake" he participated in "Operation: Helping Hand". A joint military and civilian recovery effort. His talents were utilized and proved invaluable in the survey and photography of the Anchorage area. During this time he would work with fellow legendary leathercarver and magicians Ken Griffen and his wife Roberta. Both influenced Bill to do a tour with them for the USO, entertaining wounded troops aboard aircraft carriers, with other stars such as Bob Hope and Jane Mansfield.

His military career was cut short due to circumstances beyond his control, and was given a hardship discharge. Bill returned to his home to help care for his sister, who had been injured. Bill's father had sold the business, tools and all. This setback did not discourage Bill. He opened his own store in a small feed shop. He was approached by the  students of the University of South Florida to help make sandals. He initially declined, but four thousand pairs of sandals later, the Arts and Craft Center at the University of South Florida was established.

Being very spiritual, Bill was very active in the Jackson Heights Southern Baptist Church, where he was introduced to scouting. During a Scouting trip to Ocala, FL to teach leatherwork, Bill forgot all of his tools. Once there, he improvised makeshift tools and taught the class. This led to a lifelong love for scouting. In 1976 he completed the "72 Miler" at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmeron, NM at the age of 36.

While in Florida, he proposed to Eloise McRae of Tampa, then making the move to Chattanooga, TN to the Simco Saddle Company in early 1970. In 1970 Bill and Ella had their first child, William Kim Gomer. Bill would go to re-enlist in the US Army again, as a Arts and Craft Specialist. Bill was assigned to the US Army Combined Arms Center, US Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, KS in 1973. At last he found his calling- Teaching. He found the task challenging and very rewarding. Teaching inmates and serving on the Honor Guard Drill and Ceremony Detail, and in 1975 their second child, Tonya Christine Gomer was born.

Between the years of 1976 and 1980, Bill would move his family back and forth between Kansas and Alaska, Teaching leatherwork before settling down in the Jarbalo township in rural Leavenworth county. Bill would teach there for many years, and in the early 2000's Bill relocated outside of Highland, KS, where he would set up his saddle school.

In 1986, he was awarded the Al Stolman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft, and in 2016 Bill received the Academy of Western Artists Award for Master Leather Artisan. It was often said that the crowning achievement of his career was the 125th Anniversary Kansas Saddle. Built as a birthday tribute, he would decline and would point out that, "he had been seconded to one of his students, it is a high honor when your student beats you."  

Over the years Bill has worn many hats. He has taught hundreds of students, helped reform the most hardened of criminals to become a functioning and productive member of society again. Bill has formed guilds

in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri. He has competed in local, state, national, and even on the international stage. Bill served as a Master Artist for the Kansas State Historical Society.

Bill is survived by his wife Ella, his son William K. Gomer (Las Vegas, NV), his daughter Tonya C. White (Hiawatha, KS), stepsister Vivian Nguyen (San Jose, CA), 6 Grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and 12 Great grandchildren.

He will be missed

Brandon Stewart, 9, of Dawson, NE, passed away June 15, 2022 at Council Bluffs, IA. He was born August 31, 2012 at Alliance, NE to Joe and Jessica (Jamison) Stewart.

Brandon moved to Dawson, NE with his parents in 2015, he attended Falls City South School and had just completed 3rd grade and was looking forward to being a 4th grader. He loved basketball, soccer and fishing. 

Brandon is survived by his parents, Joe and Jessica of Dawson, brothers, Ethan, Austin and Colton all of Dawson, grandparents, Steve and Mary Jamison of Elk Creek, NE, Geri and Steve Kean of Dawson, great-grandfather, Bill Stevicks of Dawson, Marvin Jamison of Pawnee City, NE, many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Mike Stewart, great-uncle, B.J. Stevicks, great-grandmothers, Ann Stevicks and Zelma Jamison.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Fitch officiating.

Rebecca Jean “Becky” Shockley, 67, of Hiawatha, died with family by her side at her home Friday, June 17, 2022.

Becky was born May 16, 1955, at Horton, the daughter of Simon Eugene “Gene” and Wilma Jean Kissinger Smith and was a lifelong Hiawatha resident where she attended school, graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1973.
Becky was no stranger to work and had worked 50+ years and retired only due to health reasons.  As a child and teen growing up she worked on the family farm in the fields DE pollinating crops for Pioneer Seed Company.  During high school, she worked at Oak Ride Acres. In 1973, Becky started with United Telephone Company as an operator which lasted 5 years.

In 1978, she started with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier and clerk at the Hiawatha Post Office.  In 1980, she was promoted to superintendent of postal operations.  In 1992, she was again promoted this time to postmaster of the Hiawatha Post Office.  In 1988 until 1991, Becky owned and operated Fins Feathers & Friends pet store, from 2000 until 2008 she worked at Subway and Nigus Retail Store.  In 2008, she joined the team at the Hiawatha Walmart where she held various positions in several different departments including overnight customer service manager.  During her time at Walmart she also got her real estate license which she has held for several years.

Becky previously was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.  She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, camping, fishing, bowling and attending concerts. Becky stated one of her most significant memory in life was the birth of her children and raising them.  

She married Frank Shockley, May 11, 1974, at Hiawatha.  To this union three children were born:  Phillip, Stephanie and Ryan.  They raised their family and attended schools in Hiawatha.  Frank survives.

Also surviving are her children Phillip ‘Phil’ Shockley (Sheli), Stephanie Shockley (Alden), Ryan Shockley (Jordanne), her sisters Lucretia Johnson, Barbara Smith, Joyce Jones, Donna Edwards and Judy Freed.  Becky also has 4 grandchildren:  Gauge Stein, Gavin White, Alyssa Braxdale and Abigail Shockley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her father and mother in law John and Marie Shockley, grandparents Ted and Pearl Kissinger, Simon and Birdie Ryherd Smith, numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A celebration of Becky’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.  Shane Spangler will officiate.  Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 12 noon Monday where the family will meet friends from 6 until 8 that evening.

Bruce Edward Haughton was born November 6, 1946 at Tecumseh, Nebraska to Velora (Bartels) and Ernest Haughton. Born with pneumonia, Bruce was brought to the waters of Holy Baptism by Reverend Gerkin on November 7, 1946 at the hospital in Tecumseh. Bruce celebrated the Rite of Confirmation at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tecumseh on May 7, 1961. Bruce was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and a member of four different churches: Immanuel Lutheran in Sterling, St. John’s Lutheran in Tecumseh, St. Peter’s Lutheran in rural Elk Creek, and Zion Lutheran in Pawnee City. It was in his church family where Bruce felt at home–a place to nurture his faith and quench his desire to “read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest” God’s Word.

Bruce attended kindergarten at Lewiston before his family moved to the Sterling area where Bruce attended school until the 8th grade when the family moved south of Tecumseh. After attending the Brush Hill country school southwest of Tecumseh in the 8th grade, Bruce attended high school at Tecumseh where he was actively involved in sports, music, and theater. He was the 1964 Tecumseh Homecoming King, a lead in the senior class play, and the Athlete of the Year his senior year of 1965. Bruce enjoyed his high school experience so much that he began to feel that education was his calling. He became the first of his siblings to graduate from a four-year college with a degree in secondary business education from Peru State College in the summer of 1969. He secured a teaching job at Pawnee City High School in the fall of that same year.

On August 22, 1970, Bruce was united in marriage to Karen (Lippold) Haughton at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in rural Elk Creek. The couple made their home in Pawnee City where Bruce continued to teach business education at Pawnee City and Karen owned and operated her own beauty shop. To this union, the couple welcomed two children–Ryan Edward on October 24, 1972 and Angie Rae on November 1, 1975.

Bruce stayed at Pawnee City High School as a business teacher, bus driver, coach, athletic director, and yearbook sponsor until he resigned from teaching in 1984 to pursue a career as a full time insurance agent. Bruce learned that you can take the teacher out of teaching, but can’t take the desire to teach out of the teacher. Bruce continued to substitute teach as much as time and health would allow right up to the time of his death, logging countless substitute teaching hours at Wymore Southern, Pawnee City, and Beatrice. In 2005, he even served as a long term substitute teacher at Southeast Consolidated in their industrial technology department. Bruce loved his students and his students loved their beloved Mr. Haughton. Teaching allowed Bruce to help young people reach their potential, and he had the God-given gift of instantly connecting with them. He loved asking them about their lives and following their sporting events. Bruce also hired numerous young men to help out on the farm with general chores and cattle work. He left a lasting impact during the formative years of generations of teenagers. He was proud that both of his children decided to make teaching their career.

From 1984 to the early 1990s, Bruce worked as full time insurance agent and district manager for the Franklin Life Insurance Company. This career change allowed Bruce to network with even more people and earn trips with his family for insurance conventions. His congenial, friendly manner made him an honest and natural businessman. In 1993, Bruce transitioned to an independent agent working part time in the insurance business until the time of his death.

There was never a time where Bruce was not an active member of his church and his community. Bruce and Karen owned numerous rentals in Pawnee City over the years, providing affordable housing to countless young people including practicing medical students and teachers. He served as elder, president, trustee, and Sunday school teacher through the years at Zion Lutheran Church. He was president of the Pawnee City High School Athletic Boosters, Pawnee City High School Foundation President, a member of the Pawnee City Historical Society, a member of the Pawnee City Housing Authority, a member of the Pawnee Pride Committee, a city council member, a Rotary member, a summer janitor at the school, and countless committees and groups that involved volunteering. Bruce viewed “work as therapy”, and never wanted to burn daylight.

Bruce took great pleasure spending time with his grandkids and following their activities and contests. Grandpa and Grandma Haughton were known to make 3-plus hour treks to football games and other activities. During this time, Bruce continued to make connections with all people of all ages, never knowing a stranger and always making someone comfortable through conversation. Bruce also enjoyed honest work with his grandsons through cutting wood and leisure through a little bit of fishing up at Camp Flapjack. He nearly made it to all of his grandkids’ confirmation celebrations and rejoiced that they grew to know Jesus as their Savior. Bruce also relished the simple pleasures–early morning walks on the track with his friends, a cool glass of sun tea after mowing, and reading his daily Portals of Prayer and nearly anything he could get his hands on–especially Scripture that he studied in Bible studies at Zion Lutheran and at the Men’s Prayer Group in Pawnee City.

Bruce loved the Lord, and by serving others, he served God. He was a sinner who was fully redeemed and dearly loved by God, and he wanted you to know the Hope that he had during his Earthly life, too.

Bruce passed away June 14, 2022 in Lincoln, Nebraska surrounded by his family. He was 75 years old.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Velora Haughton; brothers, Robert and Larry Haughton, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Karen; son, Ryan Haughton and wife Lynn of Tecumseh, Nebraska; daughter, Angie Hunzeker and husband John of rural DuBois, Nebraska; grandsons, Ryly, Brady, Hunter, and Jackson Haughton; granddaughters, Stella and Ayden Hunzeker; sister, Ruth Mandery and husband Gene of Cape Fair, Missouri; and brother, Harlan Haughton and wife Doris of Wentzville, Missouri; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. 

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2022 at St. Peters Lutheran Church, rural Elk Creek, Nebraska.  Reverend Tim Llewellyn will be officiating. Garold was born on October 11, 1953, in Blair, Kansas to Raymond and Margaret (Winkel) Davies. 

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy, Kansas. Garold worked as a Return Specialist for Newell. 

Garold married Shirley Whittaker on April 4, 1975, in Troy, Kansas. She preceded him in death on September 24, 2007. Garold then married Marilyn (MacDonald) on October 3, 2013, in Platte City, Missouri. She survives of the home. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Davies, wife, Shirley Davies, brother, Dennis Davies and stepdad, Glen Kincade. 

Additional survivors, children, Travis Davies (Carrie), Aaron Davies (Anne), Tracey Clarkson (Shawn), Tressa Moritz (Preston), Trevor Frogge (Tabitha) and Travis Frogge (Shondra).

Jackie S. (Baker) Williams, age 64 of Auburn, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at University Medical Center in Omaha.

Survivors include her sons Justin Williams (Jackie Jensen), Nathan (Ashley) Williams; daughter Jennifer Smithpeter; grandchildren Samantha Chaney, Brent and Ty Smithpeter, Madalyn, Laynie, and Keith Williams; sister Cindy (Matt) Kreifels; other relatives and many friends.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 20, 2022, 10:30 a.m. at Auburn Christian Church. Visitation will be on Sunday at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn from noon to 6:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 4:00 to 6:00.

Richard Snider, 87, of Hiawatha, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2022. He was the 10th and last child born in Offerle, KS to Nicholas and Barbara (Smith) Snider. He married Jessie (Barnes) of Kinsley on January 4, 1955. They moved to Salina, Kansas and raised their family there. After retiring they moved to Hiawatha to near their daughter and family.

Richard started his construction career building homes then took on commercial buildings. As a superintendent, he was well known having constructed several schools, college dorms, banks, post offices, and restaurants throughout Kansas. Later in life he enjoyed gardening, yardwork, and fishing.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; four brothers and his son Richard (Rick) Snider.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jessie of the home, son Mark Steven (Marissa) Snider in the Phillippines, daughter Angel (Dale) Elliott of Hiawatha. Also surviving are grandsons Jeremy (Nicole) Dolisi, Hiawatha, and John Snider of Suffolk, VA; great-grandchildren include Shae, Thane, and Blade Dolisi and JR and Hunter Snider.

Cremation is planned with a private family inurnment at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha with no formal services planned at this time.

Jeffrey Allen Rose, age 53, of Council Bluffs, IA, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Veterans Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Jeff was born June 20, 1968, to Delbert Rose of Humboldt, NE and Violet Dotson of Vermillion, KS. He grew up in northeast Kansas and southeast Nebraska. In his early years Jeff joined the Army and served abroad and stateside.

He held several different positions during his lifetime. The positions held close to his heart that he enjoyed the most where the following: Firestone Tire, Scholl Fertilizer, Rich Andrew Farm, Snethen Farms and his last employment Morris Excavation in Council Bluffs, IA. In life, sometimes the ones most broken from inside are the ones most willing to help others. Every day he got up and chose one thing that could not be bought, to be a caring, helping person. Jeff never knew a stranger and always gave it his all. Some of his favorite things he enjoyed were farm equipment, semi-trucks, and motorcycles.

Survivors include his wife of six months, two daughters, four sisters, several uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and an abundance of close friends.

Jeff was preceded in death by both parents, brother, Larry Rose, and sister, Pam Gouty.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Howard Blecha officiating.  A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow at noon at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Vicky and Chuck Lynch, 912 Cherry Lane, Humboldt, Nebraska.

Chase Tyler Hundley, 31, from Atchison Kansas died unexpectedly June 9th, 2022, at Amberwell Hospital, Atchison, KS following complications of his diabetes.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 20, 2022, from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial celebration of his life will immediately follow at 4:00 pm. Chase was born on June 20th, 1990, in Atchison, KS the son of Brian and Michelle (Scales) Hundley. He attended Atchison Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Atchison High School in 2009. Chase attended Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

He was an Organic Horticulturist and enjoyed taking care of his nieces. He also enjoyed time with his family, nature, the mountains, snowboarding, lake life on his acreage in the hills of Missouri, and was an advocate for Equality for ALL. The love of his life was his two nieces. He cared for them and loved them as if they were his own.

Chase’s sister, Jessica said “My brother wasn’t just my brother, he was my best friend. I am forever grateful for the Uncle that he was to my girls. They adored him. It is impossible to put into words the depth of his heart. I will forever admire the genuine person he always was. He was ALWAYS there for me. I adored him.”

Survivors include his parents, Brian and Michelle Hundley, Atchison, his sister Jessica (Nick) Cesare, Kansas City, MO, nieces Leilan Jene and Addelyn Nichole Cesare and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who all loved him dearly.

His grandparents Bob and Tommy Hundley and Gene and Jean Scales preceded him in death.

Travis Wade Dodson, 49 of Atchison, KS passed away Saturday, June 11, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.

Travis was born July 12, 1972, in Olathe, KS, the son of Corky and Kathryn (Fulton) Dodson. He worked at various management positions at Wal-Mart for twenty-seven years. Travis attended Faith Bible Fellowship Church. He was involved in Boy Scouts growing up and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a former volunteer firefighter in Bonner Springs, KS. Travis enjoyed woodworking, cooking, hunting, listening to music. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Travis married Christina (Chrissy) Petesch on April 7, 2001; she survives of the home. Additional survivors include his mother Kathryn Dodson, Atchison, KS, a son, Christopher Petesch, Oskaloosa, KS, two daughters, Peyton Dodson, Atchison, KS, Gracelyn Dodson, Atchison, KS, honorary brothers, Bob Eddy, Anthony Burton, Jacob Cline, Joey Vanderharr, Will Dulaban, Aaron Hollis, Raymond Wilfong, Tim Campbell, honorary sisters, Maggie Petesch Burton, Michelle Eddy, Kara Wright, Kelly Sneller, Katie Roit and Becca Dulaban, numerous nieces and nephews as well as son in law of Mike and Cheryl Petesch and grandson of Bill and Edythe Myers.

He was preceded by his father Corky Dodson.

Mark O’Grady, 64 of Falls City, NE, passed away June 12, 2022 in Falls City. He was born January 8, 1958 at Falls City to Ed and Patricia (Darling) O’Grady.

He married Patricia Liebert on April 29, 1995 and they were later divorced. He then married Janyce Schuler-Kirkendall on July 31, 2018 at Greeley, CO.

Mark was raised in Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School in 1976 and then attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and studied architecture. Following college, he worked various jobs before joining Millwright Local Union 1607 in Denver, CO and becoming a Millwright, he worked in sever different locations throughout the United States. He later joined Millwright Local Union 1529 in Kansas City where he continued with millwright work. He retired in 2020 due to his health after 35 years of being a millwright. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Mark is survived by his wife Janyce of Falls City, foster-children, Joe and Claire, step-son, Todd Kirkendall and his wife Suzan of Warrensburg, MO, step-son-in-law, Larry Peterson of Chandler, AZ, parents, Ed and Patricia of Falls City, brothers, Steve and his wife Marsha of Falls City, Chuck and his wife Donna of Falls City, Tom of Louisville, KY, sisters, Kristy O’Grady of Spurger, TX, Catherine Goza of Greeley, CO, Teresa O’Grady of Falls City, four step-grandchildren, two step-great-granddaughters, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Michelle Peterson.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rulo with Father Lawrence Stoley as the presiding priest. Inurnment will be Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

A Parish Rosary will be recited on Thursday at 5:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home, family will receive friends following the rosary at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

Vicki Lynn Thurnau, 75, passed away June 13, 2022 at Falls City, She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on April 12, 1947 to Margie Dixon Thurnau and Clarence Thurnau. She attended Craig R3 School. Vicki met an onery Rulo boy named Gary Beckner and it wasn’t long until the two were married on December 3, 1964 in Rockport, Missouri.  The two lovebirds made their home in Falls City, Nebraska.  

Vicki worked many jobs over the years tending for the elderly at area hospitals, nursing homes and providing hospice and in home health services. Vicki received her EMT certification in 1974 and was one of the original members of the Falls City Volunteer Ambulance Squad along with husband Gary. Gary and Vicki moved like gypsies making homes in Kansas City, Omaha, Chicago, and Arkansas and traveled south in their RV for several winters, making friends wherever they went.

Vicki’s hobbies included caring for her grandchildren, baking and cooking. She was famous for her fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy but really there’s nothing she couldn’t whip up. Vicki loved a good garage sale, thrift store or any sale in general. She had the largest pantry this side of the Mississippi and loved sharing with anyone in need.

She was a member of the Falls City Chocolate Gravy Group and the New Song Baptist Church in Williford, Arkansas where she enjoyed singing in the choir. 

Her husband Gary preceded her in death in 2016 and daughter Pam in early 2022.

Vicki is survived by two children, Jeff and Scott along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

A Memorial service will be held at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home on Thursday, June 23rd at 10:30 A. M.  The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 before the service at the funeral home.

Susan E. Smart, 80, of Atchison, KS died on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Susan was born on June 27, 1941, in Independence, MO the daughter of Eugene and Isabelle (Wolfe) Wolverton. Following graduation from the University of Kansas with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing she spent two years in Bolivia with the Peace Corp. Upon her return, Susan worked as a visiting nurse in Kansas City before becoming the Director of Home Health for St. John’s Hospital, Leavenworth and Providence Hospital, Kansas City.

She attended St. Benedicts Church and was a member of the KU Alumni Association and the KU Nurses Alumni Association. She enjoyed raising flowers, KU Basketball games, and volunteering at the Thrift Store. Susan especially enjoyed spending time with her family and her cat Izzi.

Susan was married to Kenneth Smart, and he survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons Kris (Mary) Beverly and granddaughter Keira, Tonganoxie, KS and Aaron Beverly, McCloud, CA, two stepdaughters Stacie (Kevin) Dougherty and grandchildren Makenzie & Mattie, Atchison, KS and Carri (Chad) Ball, and grandchildren Lindsey, Max, and Addison Wichita, KS. Her parents preceded her in death

Marilyn Jalayn Andrews, 86, of Holton, KS, passed away Monday, June 13, 2022 at Evergreen Community of Johnson County in Olathe, KS.

Marilyn was born September 25, 1935 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of Merlin LaReux Rogers and Ivolue Farmer Rogers. She started school at Potwin Elementary prior to moving with the family to Carrollton, MO, where she attended grade school. The family returned to Topeka and she attended Roosevelt Junior High School and graduated from Topeka High School in 1953. She received a BS from Kansas State University in 1957. She retired in 2000 from the State of Kansas, Social and Rehabilitation Services, as an Administrative Officer after 24 years of service.

Marilyn was a life member of the Kansas State University Alumni Association, a member of the Jackson County Catbackers, a member of the Topeka High School Historical Society and a member of the First Baptist Church of Holton. She was honored to be a member of Holton’s Chapter P of the PEO Sisterhood and a member of the Holton Tourist Club. She was very pleased to be a volunteer at Holton Hospital in the Cardo Unit. She danced with the Happy Tapper’s Dance Group. She was an avid sports fan, who supported KSU, Washburn, Holton High, The Cubs and The Braves. She also traveled many miles to Ricky Van Shelton concerts where she enjoyed meeting other fans from all over the country.

She married Charles M. Reynolds in July 1958 in Denver, CO, where they resided for many years. They divorced in 1974 and Marilyn returned to Kansas. She married Henry C. Andrews in May 1980, they also divorced. Mr. Andrews died in February 2003.

Marilyn is survived by her three children, Julia K. Darrah of Tuscan, AZ, Michael C. Reynolds of Oakland, CA and Susan A. Reynolds of Lawrence, KS. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren; Ariel Almquist, Zachary Johnson and Dylan Busarto; and her great-grandchildren, Asher, Beckett, Cameron, and Fernie. She will be missed by “The Girls”, a wonderful group of ten friends of Holton (the Baptist Belles) and unbelievable caring friends, Jay and Carol Buehler (Carol preceded her in death on February 27, 2022). While a student at K-State, she began a life-long friendship with two dear friends, Kay Suddath of California and Janet McKinsey of Nebraska. Without Janet’s love and support thru the years, Marilyn would have been lost.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Merlin and Ivolue Rogers and a brother, Glenn L. Rogers.

Evangelina “Angel” Romesser-Dennis, 15, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 10, 2022 at Falls City. She was born August 9, 2006 at Omaha, NE to Allan Romesser and Marinda Dennis.

Angel, or Toby as her friends called her, was raised at Council Bluffs, IA and had lived in DeFuniak Springs, FL, Lauderdale, FL Lehigh Acres, FL, Berlin, NH and Merrimack, NH before moving to Falls City in 2021. She had just finished her sophomore year and was a member of the Class of 2024. She participated in Cross Country, Wrestling, Track, One Act, Speech, was an Honor Roll Student and helped with the haunted house. Her favorite teachers were Mrs. Simon and Mr. Causgrove. She was currently employed at the Falls City Aquatic Center, helping in the snack bar and the water slides. She loved art and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Angel is survived by her mother and step-dad, Marinda Dennis and Jim Liming of Falls City, brother, Andrew Romesser of Falls City, grandparents, Linda and Richard Holmes of Bellevue, NE, Collin and Jean Marie Hughes of Las Vegas, Jim and Carmen Morehead of Verdon, NE, uncles, aunts, cousins and Friends, Coworkers and teammates who always loved and supported her. She was preceded in death by her father, great-grandparents, Ruth and Andrew Romesser, Jacqueline and Gilbert Goos, Elizabeth and James Kuhl and Paul Peterson and a grandfather, Kenneth Dennis.

Darrell Allen Martin, 75, of Holton, KS, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2022 in Holton. He was born May 17, 1947 in Topeka, KS, the son of Darrell Milton and Bonnie Lou (Arnold) Martin.

          Darrell graduated from Lecompton High School in 1966. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1966 – 1968, during the Vietnam War.

          He was an over-the-road truck driver for many years, retiring from Price Trucking in Topeka on January 1, 2006.

          Darrell married Sandra Lou “Sandy” Cochran on May 17, 1980 in Holton, KS. She was the love of his life; she preceded him in death on October 11, 2020. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Darrell and Bonnie Martin.

          Survivors include his sons, Robert Martin of Tijuana, Mexico and Christopher Christie (Jessica) of Topeka, KS; mother-in-law, Doris “Jean” O’Neal of Holton, KS and 4 grandchildren, Reagan and Jaxson Christie, Trenton Henery and Emily Martin.

Floyd David Horton, 84, of Troy, Kansas passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2022. 

Floyd was born on November 7, 1937, in Lebo, Kansas to Floyd and Martha (St. Bonnett) Horton. 

He was a member of the American Legion Post #55 and the Masonic Lodge Post #55 both of Troy, Kansas. Dave served in the U.S. Army and retired from the Kansas Army National Guard. 

Dave was an equipment operator for Kansas Department of Transportation of Troy, Kansas. 

Dave married Wanda Walters on December 31, 1962, in Seneca, Kansas. She survives of the home. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Martin F. Horton.

Karen Anita Parrett, 81, of Holton, KS, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Medicalodge Jackson County. She was born December 2, 1940 in Omaha, NE, the daughter of William B. and Opal A. (Kittelson) Lewis.

Karen graduated from Holton High School in 1958 and completed Cosmetology College in Topeka. She lived in the Holton community since 2007 and previously in Denison for many years.

She worked a short time for Hallmark Cards in Topeka and JC Penny’s in Holton. Karen worked at the Jackson County Treasure’s Office and later as County Clerk. In 2005, she retired from Jackson Farmers as a grain accountant. She enjoyed her Bible Study with the Denison Bible Church.

Karen married Lyle I. Parrett on April 16, 1971 in Holton, KS; he preceded her in death on November 26, 2005 after 35 years of marriage.

 Survivors include her 2 sons, Douglas Parrett (Karen) of Leavenworth, KS and Samuel Parrett (Jennifer) of St. Mary’s, KS; a daughter, Julie Montgomery of Foley, AL; brother, Michael Lewis (Marsha) of Jacksonville, AR; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

John R. Bachman, 68, of Savannah, MO, passed away June 8, 2022 at Savannah. He was born January 11, 1954 at Falls City, NE, to Joseph and Ethel (Foster) Bachman.

He married Carla Hall on January 22, 1971 at Atchison, KS.

John was raised in the Falls City and Rulo area, following his schooling he farmed with his father on the family farm while also working at the Rulo Post Office as a rural carrier. He retired due to his health in 1997 and moved to the family farm following the death of his father and then into Falls City and to Savannah in 2019. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a former President of the Falls City Jaycees, and Knights of Columbus.

John is survived by his wife Carla of Savannah, children, Felicia Roarty and her husband Brian of Savannah, Briana Xirum-Bachman and her husband Julio Xirum-Cuin of Falls City, Joseph Bachman and his companion Misty Popejoy of Falls City, sisters, Bonnie Bragg of Omaha, Rose Mary Baker of Oklahoma, grandchildren, Steven (Tiffany) Roarty and their child Mazey, Justin (Trennon) Roarty and their children Breznyn and Baby R, Andrew Roarty and his fiancé Skylar Proctor, Christine Roarty, Jake Fritts, Tylor Fritts and his son Xavier, Sarah Fritts and her children Xander Davis, Liam, Jacob and Avery Richbourg, Valerie Xirum-Bachman, Taylor Bachman, Tabitha (Christian) Tollefson and their children, Matthew, Thomas and Tucker, Madison Popejoy and Taiton Bachman. Phyllis Edith Sieve - Cowan, 98, of Oskaloosa, formerly of Valley Falls, KS, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at The University of Kansas St. Francis Campus in Topeka, KS, with family by her side. She was born September 25, 1923 in LaSalle, IL, the daughter of Ernest Carl and Geraldine (Rockhill) Offergeld.

            Phyllis graduated from Topeka High School in 1942. She worked for Adam Brothers Bindery in Topeka, then met the love of her life and married Albert Sieve. She worked alongside her husband on the family dairy farm; while raising their 11 children. Later, she was an interior designer and sold product for Melalluca. She was a nurse’s aide at Winchester Hospital and was a cook and housekeeper at Linwood Retirement Center in Valley Falls. Phyllis also sold Home Interiors and Avon.

            She was a member of the Valley Falls community for over 78 years. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Altar Society, V.F.W. Post 3084 Auxiliary and Prairie Hall Club all in Valley Falls. Phyllis enjoyed baking and was well-known for her amazing cinnamon rolls.

            She married Albert Sieve on September 1, 1943 in Valley Falls, KS; he preceded her in death on January 23, 2000. She married Jerry Cowan on May 1, 2004 in Valley Falls, KS; he preceded her in death on February 13, 2016. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Geraldine Offergeld; 2 children, Ann O’Shea and Mike Sieve; 2 sisters, Dorothy Miller and Norma Miller and 2 sons-in-law, Tom O’Shea and Ron Herring.

Calvin “Pat” Puckett, Jr, 73, of Humboldt, NE, passed away June 7, 2022 at Falls City. He was born March 17, 1949 at Lawrence, KS to Calvin and Grace (Van Nice) Puckett, Sr.

He married Trudi Simmons on October 30, 1981 at Enid, OK. She passed away August 21, 2008.

Pat enlisted in the U. S. Air Force on March 11, 1971 at Kansas City, MO. He served as an air traffic control radar repairman. He was honorably discharged on June 10, 1974 at Dobbins AFB, GA.

Pat was raised at Lawrence and Humboldt, KS and graduated from Lawrence Senior High School in 1967. He drove a truck until enlisting and when he was discharged, he continued driving a truck over the road, moving from Enid to Hiawatha in 1993 where he continued driving until 2009 and then began working at Mary’s Appliance at Falls City. He gained a life partner in November of 2019 when he married Shirley Bivans and then moved to Humboldt. He was a member of First Christian Church at Hiawatha and the VFW.

Pat is survived by his spouse, Shirley Bivans of Humboldt, children, Amanda Zell, Christina Rogers and Matthew Puckett all of Lawrence, KS, Eric Puckett and Melissa Puckett both of Falls City, brother, Tom and his wife Angela, sister, Diana Lawrence of West Port, NY, step-children, Wendy Reuter and her husband Erick of Shubert, NE, Monte Foster and his wife Kala of Falls City, four grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a daughter, Mary Grace in infancy.

Mr. Puckett has been cremated and services will be held at a later date.

Donna M. Trost, long-time resident of Hiawatha, KS died at 93 in her home
attend by her daughter, Diane on June 6, 2022.

Donna was born October 7, 1928 at Falls City, NE to Silas & Amanda
(Yoesel) Hilgenfeld. She attended grade school at Silver Creek School,
District #81, graduated for Falls City High School in 1946 and received her
B.A. from Westmar College in Le Mars, IA then taught one year of English
at Hubbard, IA. Donna married John D. Trost of Concordia, KS on June 14,
1952 in her parent's garden. The couple move to San Diego, CA where John
finish out his enlistment. Upon his discharge in 1954 they settled on a farm
in rural Concordia,KS. Donna's family moved to Lincoln, KS in 1960 then
to Hiawatha, KS in 1962.

Donna was employed by the Brown Co. SCS office and the Morrill Public
Library in Hiawatha. She attended the Emporia State Teachers College and
earned her M.A. in Library Science in 1972. Donna was the librarian at
Highland High School from 1971 to 1973 and then at Hiawatha High
School until she retired in 1990. She was in charge of the yearbook for both
schools.

Donna was very active in her community-- a Camp Fire Girls Leader, a
member of Saturday Club, 49er's EHU, EANGUS/EANGKS Auxiliary,
VFW Post #5210 Auxiliary, KS Teacher's Assoc. and Church Women
United. After her retirement she added Red Cross Gray Ladies at the local
hospital, Brown Co. Assoc. Retired School Personnel, Friends of the
Library, Brown Co. Historical Society and Genealogical Society.

Donna's family were members of the Evangelical United Brethren Church
which became the Trinity UMC and when Trinity closed in 2021 she joined
the Bethel UMC the church of her youth. Donna was the church organist
from 1967 until 2019. In addition she taught Sunday school, held varies
offices, served on numerous communities and was a active member of the
United Methodist Women.

Donna and her husband John loved to travel. They attended many
EANGUS (National Guards) Conventions across the United States and
continued the tradition started by Donna's father to visit all the State capitols
in the USA, seeing all but two.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband who died November 16, 1999.
She is survived by her 4 children Joyce (Jerry) Hjetland, Diane Kerr,
Marilyn (Dennis) Van Swol, and Mike (Nancy) Trost, 8 grandchildren, 21
great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and her sister Joan Zoeller.

Funeral service will be at 11 am Monday, June 13th at Chapel Oaks Funeral
Home in Hiawatha officiated by Pastor Shane Spangler. Family will visit
with friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The service
will be streamed at chapeloaksfuneralhome.com. This is a celebration of life
and Donna requested no black, only bright colors. Interment will follow at
Bethel-Zion Cemetery, corner of 707 Rd and 657 Ave, Falls City, NE.

Esther Duerfeldt, 98, of Falls City, NE, passed away June 6, 2022 at Falls City. She was born May 21, 1924 at Straussville, NE to Herman and Elizabeth (Strauss) Mez.

She married Elmer Duerfeldt on October 8, 1944 at Falls City. He passed away January 23, 2006.

Esther was raised at Straussville and graduated Falls City High School in 1942. When married the couple made their home on a farm in the Barada area where she was a homemaker and farm wife.  She lived on the farm until becoming a resident of Falls City Nursing and Rehab in 2019.  She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

Esther is survived by her son, Dale and his wife Carol of Falls City, daughters, Carol Hamilton and Vera Ploeger both of Falls City, Judy Burgett and her husband Randy of Humboldt, NE, twelve grandchildren and one step-grandchild,

twenty great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents, husband and a grandson, Matthew Duerfeldt

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Mike Wolfram officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

Lawrence “Keith” Parrett, 83, of Holton, KS, formerly of Circleville, KS, passed away Monday, June 6, 2022 at his home with family by his side. He was born July 10, 1938 in Topeka, KS, the son of Lawrence Preston and Mary Willie (Keithline) Parrett.

Keith graduated from Circleville High School in 1956. He lived most of his life in Circleville and Silver Lake, KS. He worked for Bartlett & West Engineering for 5 years in Topeka. He retired in 1994 from the State of Kansas Construction Department; working in the Topeka and Holton areas.

He was a member of the Circleville Christian Church and Silver Lake Lions Club.

Keith married Joyce M. Ingels on May 26, 1962 in Circleville, KS; they celebrated over 60 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce of the home; 2 daughters, Tracey Parrett and Kelley Parrett both of Topeka, KS; 2 brothers, Ronald D. Parrett (Marlyn) of Circleville, KS and Kenneth A. Parrett (Carol) of Mayetta, KS; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mary Parrett; infant twin-brother, Maurice Heath Parrett.

Susan Lynette LaCounte, 77, of Hiawatha, Kansas, died Sunday afternoon, June 5, 2022, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha where she had been a resident since April 7, 2022. Susan was born in Horton, Kansas, one of three children of Donald LaCounte and Nellie LaCounte.

Susan was a resident for four months at Vintage Park Assisted Living before moving to Maple Heights Nursing Home. Her family is so appreciative of the loving care given to Susan by the caregivers of both of these facilities.

Susan graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1963 and then attended Emporia State Teacher’s College graduating with a degree in education in 1967.

She received a plaque for 47 years of service HGMS in 2014 and a plaque for 34 years of service to education from Garden City USD 457 in 2014.

At her retirement, Susan looked forward to moving back to the family farm.

She was a proud member of the Brown County Association of Retired School Personnel and Delta Kappa Gamma Soriety.

Susan enjoyed making fleece blankets, quilting, knitting, reading, traveling, especially to Branson, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie LaCounte October 24, 2007, her father, Donald LaCounte July 17, 2020, and an infant brother Donald LaCounte, Jr.

She is survived by two siblings, Thomas (Peggy Buis) LaCounte and Peggy Jo Gardino; two nieces and a nephew Sherri (Derek) Park, Holly (David) Karpowich and Paul Gardino and four great nieces and nephews Hailey Park, Hayden Park, Kelsey Karpowich and Keaton Karpowich.

A Celebration of Susan’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Shane Spangler will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Saturday.

Mary R. Wessel, 89, formerly of Effingham, KS, passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2022 surrounded by her family at the Hillside Village of DeSoto, KS where she received loving care the past eighteen months.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, June 9, 2022 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Effingham with Fr. Hughes as Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery. Mary Rosina Grollmes was born on January 5, 1933 in Seneca, KS, the daughter of Paul and Helen (Gudenkauf) Grollmes. Mary graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1950 and she and Joseph Wessel were married on Feb. 11, 1956 at Valley Falls. Joseph preceded Mary in death on August 4, 2018. They celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Mary loved being a homemaker, housewife and mother. Family was very important to her, especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. St. Ann’s Church and her faith was also important as she served in many ways at the church and even was the church organist for several years. Mary was a cook manager for the Atchison County Community Middle School for several years until she retired. Mary was a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society, a bridge card club, and she enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, and playing cards and games with family.

Survivors include two sons, Steve (Peggy) Wessel, Baldwin City, KS, Pat (Lisa) Wessel, Valley Falls, KS; three daughters, Judy (Tony) Jackson, Lancaster, KS, Linda (Tony) Kearney, Atchison, KS, Marlene (Mark) Westermann, Everest, KS; ten grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Leo Grollmes, Winchester, KS; brother-in-law, Tom (Connie) Wessel, Ft. Worth, TX; sister-in-law, Virginia Grollmes, Valley Falls.

Mary was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Francis Grollmes; and three sisters, Alice Frakes, Helen Grollmes, and Sarah Grollmes.

Lola Jean (Lantz) Clutter, 83 of Pawnee City, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2022 in Lincoln, Nebraska at Bryan West Memorial Hospital. She was born April 28, 1939 to Leonard and Maude (Hartman) Lantz in Pawnee City, Nebraska.
She attended Pawnee City High School.

Lola married Robert H. Spier on July 17, 1955 at Coryell Park, Auburn, Nebraska. To that union 5 children were born. Lola married Robert Earl Clutter in Humboldt, Nebraska on October 26, 1975.

Lola worked for 28 years at the Beatrice Development Center, in Beatrice, Nebraska. Lola’s hobbies were crocheting, reading, knitting and she loved to grow flowers. Lola enjoyed going to all her kids and grandkids ball games and other activities and she loved playing with the great grandkids.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Pawnee City, Nebraska.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Maude Lantz, husband Robert Clutter, brothers, Ralph Lantz, Kenneth Lantz and Keith Lantz, sons, Larry and Dale Spier and nephew Tom Lantz.

She is survived by her son Jeffrey Lynn (Teresa) Spier of Pawnee City, NE, daughters, Norma Jean (Frank) Hamilton of Beatrice, NE and Theresa Louise (Charles) Schneider of Beattie, KS, daughter-in-law Leslie Spier of Waverly, NE, nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, brother Kyle Lantz at the VA home in Kearney, NE, numerous, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Clarence David Todd, 91, of Effingham, KS died on Saturday, June 04, 2022, at the Pines South, Holton, KS.

Clarence was born on January 26, 1931, near Denison, KS the son of Robert A. and Clarice (Grubbs) Todd. He graduated from Denison High School in 1949 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural from the Kansas State University and his Master of Science degree in Biology from Emporia State University. Mr. Todd was a teacher for USD 377 – Atchison County Community High School for many years and was a farmer. He served in the United States Army after marrying Marjorie Belle Coleman on Aug. 11, 1951, at her parents’ home near Denison, KS. Clarence was a member of the Effingham Union Church, where he sang in the choir, was a member of the Gideon’s International, the National Education Association, the Kansas Anthropological Association, the Pony Express Travelers RV Club, the Northeast Kansas Area Agency Board of Directors, the Effingham Tree Board, was active with 4H and the Extension work, member of the Promise keepers, Senior Olympics (Cycling), Clarence biked across Kansas at the age of 64. He enjoyed archaeology, genealogy, photography, music, mobile RV camping. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include two sons David R. (Elizabeth) Todd, Effingham, KS, and Allen R. (Wendy) Todd, Manhattan, KS, a daughter Diane (Kevin) Kiehl, Horton, KS, nine grandchildren, Jared Todd, Dallas Todd, Megan Gracey, Mindee Gehring, Jordan Todd, Derek Todd, Matthew Kiehl, Claire Todd, and Coleman Todd and nine great grandchildren, Maddox, Marcello, Isabel, Khloe, Knox, Canon, Graham, Dawson and Deacon. His parents, wife Marjorie (1-25-2022), two infant daughters Brenda Claire and Carol Nadine Todd, and two sisters Charlotte White and Mary Hower, preceded him in death.

Caroline Ann McKay, age 79, passed away on Mother's Day, May 8, 2022 at her home in Rochester, Minnesota.

She was born July 10, 1943 in Falls City, NE to Frank Sheehan and Helen (Babb) Sheehan.

Growing up on a farm near Verdon, NE as the youngest of three siblings,  meant Caroline was spared from many of the tougher daily chores. As her brothers Michael, Richard and sister Pat would have easily reminded you, but those years on the farm instilled in her a toughness and resiliency that she carried with her all her life.

She attended Sacred Heart High School in Falls City and not long after graduation, moved to Omaha. In 1964 she met her husband of 55 years Robert (Bob) McKay. Getting married on October 30, 1965, they soon settled down and had three children, Michael, Matthew, and Tricia.

Caroline loved being creative. She enjoyed painting and then picked up sewing in the 1970s. Outfitting her three children in some of the grooviest homemade outfits to ever hit the Omaha Public School system. Luckily many were documented on Kodachrome film for posterity and laughs. Later, taking up photography she documented every road trip, golf course and fishing stream she and Bob encountered during their retirement. Her curiosity and desire to learn was endless.

She was a devout wife and mother. When Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991, they started a long tough journey together that lasted until his death in September of 2020. Her unwavering support and strength helped him until the very end, even as she started her own fight with cancer.

With all this, she rarely let it get her down approaching everyday with optimism and positivity. With a great smile and easy laugh, few made friends faster than her.

Caroline is preceded in death by her husband Bob; her parents Frank and Helen; her brothers Michael and Richard, and recently by her sister Pat Sheehan. After Pat's passing, Caroline was determined to stay healthy long enough to attend the memorial service a few months later, which she did. Closure that meant so much to her.

She is survived by her children and their spouses Michael (Amy), Matt (Pebble), Tricia (John); her granddaughter, Anna, and six nieces and nephews.

Prayer Services are being held Friday, June 10, 2022 at 11:00 am at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Father Lawrence Stoley officiating. Inurnment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life Mass for Mary Jane (“Jane”) Prohaska will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church on her birthday, June 8, 2022 with a Rosary preceding the Mass at 10:30 a.m. followed by prelude music chosen in part by Jane. The Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m.

Jane was born on June 8, 1930 in Everest, Kansas to Henry John (“Henry”) and Pauline Cecilia (“Polly”) (Zeller) Kuckelman. She married John Joseph Prohaska on November 28, 1953 in Everest, Kansas at St Joseph Catholic Church. John predeceased her on May 6, 1996. Jane was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers Robert and Vernon Kuckelman and daughter, Linda. Jane passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 12, 2021. She is survived by four children Michael (Mary); Mark (Mai); Kathryn (Christopher) and Julie (Michael), ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Jane was a graduate of Everest High School in Everest, Kansas. After high school she entered nurses training and was a 1951 graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing. Jane worked for over 30 years as an R.N. starting at the Atchison, Kansas Hospital, then at the Hiawatha Community Hospital and later in her nursing career at long-term care facilities in Hiawatha, Kansas. She was a long time member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha.

Jane was an accomplished musician in her early years. She played the piano, organ, clarinet, and violin and had a beautiful soprano voice. Jane loved to read especially science fiction and mystery books. She was also an avid gardener and enjoyed many years after her retirement as an R.N. in her gardens growing beautiful flowers and lots of tomatoes and zucchini. She designed and built not only a rock waterfall for her yard but also a brick patio and sidewalk. Jane enjoyed having pets around her and had a number of cats, dogs and canaries. In her later years, Jane’s dog Pixie followed by her rescue dog, Rosie, were not only her loyal companions but also her “ears” helping her know what was going on around her when her hearing loss became profound. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Jane lived a good long life with many blessings. As noted above a Celebration of Life Mass will be held for Jane on June 8, 2022 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha, Kansas.      

Donald Lee Feek passed away Thursday, May 19, 2022, at the Sabetha Manor after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 15, 1936, to Walter W. and Veda McDougall Feek at Sabetha.
 

Don was a life-long resident of Sabetha. He married Malinda Boyd in 1977. Don was a life-long mechanic, having worked at Skelly, Keim, Koch and buying his own truck. After retirement, he worked at the casino. Malinda passed away Sept. 1, 2008.
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sisters, Ethel Lee Frazier and Elizabeth Ann Quintero; and a brother, Forrest (Jack) Feek.
 

He is survived by two daughters, Pam Jackman of Sabetha and Debbie Frasch of Cape Fair, Mo.; a sister, Elta Adamson of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley A. Stauffer, 79, of Mayetta, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at her son Kevin’s home surrounded by her husband, her sons and daughters-in-law. She was born December 21, 1942 in Holton, Kansas the daughter of Clayton and Doris (Bohnenkemper) Bontrager.    

Shirley attended Bateman elementary school and Holton and Whiting High Schools.

Shirley married Auswell “Bud” Stauffer, Jr on December 31, 1961. They enjoyed sixty years of love and companionship.  He survives after Shirley made sure he completed cancer treatments.

She worked twenty-one years as a paraprofessional at Royal Valley Elementary in Mayetta and High School in Hoyt.  She helped as the unofficial secretary of the Mayetta Volunteer Fire Department.  She attended and was treasurer at the Mayetta Methodist Church.  She played a vital role in the family business, from bookkeeper to parts runner and shipping. She enjoyed word search books, puzzles, antiques shopping with her family, collecting small figurines and bells, observing birds in her feeders, food shows, rodeos and sports on television.  Shirley’s greatest joy was watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in events.  She loved attending dance recitals, soccer matches and ballgames. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include four sons: Bryan Stauffer (Cindy) of Stanwood, WA; Kevin Stauffer (Laura) of Holton, KS; Jeffrey Stauffer (Melissa) of Silver Lake, KS; Todd Stauffer (Rosetta) of Mayetta, KS; eleven grandchildren, Rachel Whitten  (Joe) of Eudora, KS; Clayton Stauffer (Carolina) of Midland, TX; Laura Kinney (Chris) of Bellevue, WA; Julia Noreika (Michael) of New London, NH; Adam Stauffer (Laura)  of Topeka, KS; Kenley Carpenter (Bryce) of Holton, KS; Ellie Klepees (Dillon)  of Holton, KS; Aidan and Brenna McDonald-Stauffer of Silver Lake, KS; Gary Stauffer (Andrea)  of Topeka and Tim Stauffer of Atchison, KS; seventeen great-grandchildren;  two brothers, Roger Bontrager (Connie) of Holton, KS and Richard Bontrager (Susan) of Holton, KS.

Gerald Francis Holthaus,79 of Seneca, Kansas passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital on June 1, 2022.

Gerald was born at Vermillion, Kansas, the son of Gregory and Henrietta Hulsing Holthaus on Dec. 10, 1942. He attended St. Mary’s School, St. Benedict, Kansas, thru his sophomore year when his parents moved to Axtell, Kansas, where he graduated in 1960. He attended Benedictine College for two years before enlisting in the Kansas National Guard in 1963. His unit was activated in 1968 due to Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged in August 1969 with rank of Staff Sargent E-6.

On October 10, 1964, Jerry married Iris Stueve at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell.

They made their home in Topeka, Kansas, where Jerry was employed by Good Year Tire and Rubber. He retired in 2004 after 40 years as the Midwest Logistic and Distribution Manager. After retiring he did volunteer work for St. Francis Hospital, Topeka and Red Cross. He also worked at Dillons Grocery, Topeka.

Jerry was a member of St. Peter and Paul Church, St. Joseph Society, and a honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1769. Which he was very proud. He loved to sing in their choir.

Jerry had a passion for sports and loved watching his daughters play and his grandchildren. He really enjoyed seeing his little great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ava L. Steinlage on April 28, 2011; a son-in-law, Frank Hulsing on November 24, 2018; his parents, Gregory Holthaus on January 12, 2001 and Henrietta Holthaus on March 17, 2013; his brother, Victor Holthaus on August 6, 2018; and a nephew, Eric Holthaus on June 16, 2018. Also, his great pal, Buffy.

Gerald is survived by his wife Iris, four daughters, Stephanie Hulsing (Fiancé) Dale Haverkamp of Seneca, Anissa (Corey) Bloom of Wetmore, Chantel (Ron) Heinen of Seneca and Shana (David) Steinlage of Centralia; and two brothers, Duane (Marleen) Holthaus and Richard (Carol) Holthaus both of Axtell; a sister, Mary Beth (Tom) Haverkamp of Seneca; 14 grandchildren; and nine great -grandchildren, with two on the way.

Rosaries were held at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Friday, June 3, at 2 and 7 p.m.  The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Fr. Arul Carasala and con-celebrated by Fr. Jim Shaughnessy and Fr. Reggie Saldanha on Saturday, June 4  at 10 am at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. The pall, that was placed on his casket, was draped by his wife and daughters. The servers were Faith Bloom, Claire Heinen and Carlee Steinlage. Music was provided by the Knights of Columbus.

The lector was is son-in-law David Steinlage. The giftbearers were his granddaughters, Shannon Henry, Brooke Lococo, Cassidy Eisenbarth and Kaitlyn Schuetz.

The pallbearers were his grandsons, Jerald Hulsing, Kenton Bloom, Kyle Bloom, Tyler Heinen, Marcus Heinen, Daegan Steinlage and Will Steinlage. The burial was in the church cemetery.

Full military honors were provided by the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Earl W. Taylor Post #21. A flag line was provided by the American Legion Riders Post #21.

Memorials may be left in Gerald’s name to Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and/or the Baileyville Benefit, sent in care of the family.

 Lynn Mervin Geyer, 69, of rural Humboldt, Nebraska was born on May 5, 1953, in Humboldt, Nebraska.  His parents, Mervin Robert and Wilma Helen (Bohling) Geyer raised their family in the country north of Humboldt where Lynn was the oldest of three siblings.  He was the ornery, protective big brother of Jana and Beth and always shared fond memories of his sisters, parents and grandparents.  Lynn attended Bratton Union Consolidated School until it closed and then graduated from Southeast Consolidated High School in Stella.  During his school age years, Lynn helped with milking at the family farm and helped surrounding farmers.  After graduation, he had periods of time living in Lincoln and Sidney, Nebraska.  Lynn had many friends that would always call to see what the nights plan was.  He shared memories of cruising around, camping, hiking and hunting with his buddies. 

Seeing the need for help on the farm, Lynn moved back and later made his home in his grandparent’s house just south of where he grew up.  He would go on to raise beans, hay, corn, cattle and pigs along with everything in between.  Lynn had two children, Lucas and Lacee, and was a good dad.  He would play like a kid with them, teach them about work ethic and plant their faith at an early age.  He loved to teach them about the outdoors, from hunting, fishing and general respect for nature.

Lynn loved the mountains and talked often about all the places he got to see during his life.  He absolutely loved planning a vacation and would always have a written schedule of what was going to take place on the trip.  The Crown Victoria would be cleaned and packed full for the family adventures.  Lynn went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.  He is preceded in death by his grandparents, father Mervin Geyer and many aunts and uncles.

Lynn is survived by his loving children: Lucas Geyer of Lincoln, NE; Lacee Noa and her husband Adam of rural Nemaha, NE; mother Wilma Geyer of Humboldt, NE; sisters: Jana Anderson and fiancé Dave Wheeler of Stella, NE; Beth Griffin and her husband Deon of Topeka, KS; Uncles: Rich Plager of rural Humboldt, NE; Ike Alberts of Auburn, NE; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church in rural Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastors Eric Spruth-Janssen and Roger Hoffman officiating. A livestream of services will be available on the Wherry Mortuary/Monument Facebook page for those not able to attend services.  Inurnment will follow services at St. James (Long Branch) Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at the Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street in Humboldt, Nebraska.  Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be given to St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church or Stella Fire Departments.

Gene Patrick Hart, 81 of Burchard, Nebraska passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at his home with his family by his side. He was born on August 5, 1940 in Pawnee City, Nebraska to Reuben Emery and Mary Ellen (Byrne) Hart.
