Tanya Renee Newell, 66, of Oskaloosa, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, surrounded by her family.

Tanya was born October 3, 1959, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas Laverne and Verrell (Weinberg) Garren. She was a 1977 graduate of Oskaloosa High School.

Throughout her career, Tanya served as a secretary in customer service for Jefferson County Farm Bureau, the Jefferson County Health Department, the Jefferson County Courthouse, and Oskaloosa Jr.-Sr. High School. At the time of her passing, she was serving as secretary for Rural Water District #7 in Oskaloosa. She was also a member of the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church.

Tanya married Steven Ray Newell on October 9, 1982, at the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. Steven survives their home. She is also survived by her daughter, Stephanie (Flynt Brading) Newell of Lawrence; two sons, Daniel (Amy) Newell of Oskaloosa and Mark (Alyssa) Newell of Oskaloosa; one brother, Monte (Rhonda) Garren of Oskaloosa; two sisters-in-law, Julie Garren of Topeka and Cathy Garren of Oskaloosa; one brother-in-law, Rex Forbes of Oskaloosa; and four grandchildren, Jackson and Lane Newell, and Nash and Lyndy Newell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Cheryl Forbes; and her brothers, Marty Garren and Rick Garren.

Tanya found great joy in creating homemade gifts for the people she loved, including blankets, Christmas stockings, and other special keepsakes. Her greatest joy, however, was her grandchildren, whom she adored and treasured beyond words.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 1, 2026 at Barnett Family Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2026 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, northwest of Oskaloosa.

Kolten Wayne Huss of Highland, Kansas passed away Thursday September 24th, 2026, at his home at the age of 25. He was born on February 3, 2001, to Scott Huss and Melody Fields in St. Joseph, Missouri. He grew up in Highland, Kansas where he graduated from Doniphan West High School. Following high school, Kolten held various jobs in the restaurant and retail industries where his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and ability to talk to anyone served him well.

Kolten was truly one of a kind. He was always unapologetically and uniquely himself. He was funny, kindhearted, generous, compassionate, outgoing, and loved the people in his life deeply. He had an unforgettable sense of humor and loved making people laugh. He had a lighthearted spirit and a way of lighting up a room wherever he went. He was always willing to help others and was never afraid to say what was on his mind. Above all, Kolten was always uniquely himself. His sense of humor, larger-than-life personality, and ability to make even ordinary moments memorable are things those who loved him will never forget.

He lived with a freedom of expression that was entirely his own and never felt the need to fit neatly into anyone else’s expectations. He loved getting dolled up, putting on his favorite wig and lashes, shopping, listening to music, dancing, and spending time with his family and friends. He wasn’t afraid to stand out or express himself bringing a little more color, laughter, and life wherever he went. He could be bold and larger than life one minute and perfectly content enjoying the simplest moments with people he loved the next. He had a creative spirit and brought his own unmistakable personality to everything he did.

Kolten also had a soft and compassionate heart. He cared deeply about others and was generous with what he had. He loved his family, treasured his friendships, and had a special place in his heart for the people closest to him. Beneath the humor and larger-than-life personality was someone who simply wanted to love and be loved.

His life was not without struggles but those struggles were only one small part of his story. They did not define who he was or erase all of the wonderful things that made him who he was. Kolten was a son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. He was someone who loved deeply, made people laugh, cared for others, and left an imprint on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His life mattered more than he could have ever known, and he was loved beyond what words can adequately express.

Survivors include his father Scott Huss, of Highland, his mother and stepfather Melody and Brad Fields, of Highland, KS, his sister Kirsten Mendez and her husband Lorenzo Mendez, of Hiawatha, KS, his brother Chase Fields of Highland, KS, niece Lola Mendez, his grandmothers Laverte Weis and Charlene Huss both of Highland, KS and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather’s Ronald Huss and Gary Weis, and Aunt Mary Nuzum.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after 10 a.m. Wednesday where the family will meet from 6-8 that evening. A Celebration of Kolten’s life will be held at 10:30 Thursday morning, October 1, 2026, with Pastor Jerry Petering officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

David B. Hinton, 70, of rural Hiawatha, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, September 24, 2026, with family by his side.

David was born December 22, 1955, the second to the youngest child of Bruce and Marcelle Forney Hinton.  David met Suzy Albee and became high school sweethearts and were married in 1975.  After graduating from Hiawatha High School in 1974, David farmed his whole life till retiring in 2021 after a stroke.

He served on the Brown-Atchison Electric board for 33 years.

David loved to go bird hunting with his buddy Jim and spend time with his brother-in-law Earl.  He also enjoyed hosting get togethers in his back yard oasis that David had built.

David and Suzy had 2 wonderful children Mandy and Paul.  He enjoyed the kids’ activities and never missed an event.  David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.

David is survived by his wife loving wife Suzy, his daughter Mandy Simpson and husband Dan, son Paul Hinton and wife Tammy.  He was proud grandfather to Joey Simpson and wife Jaelyn, Howard Hinton, Abby Hinton and her daughter Eva Hinton, Cole Hinton and his wife Alessia and last but not least ‘the boys’ Brad Hinton and Brody Simpson.

His siblings are Marcia Schwartz (Hank), Robert Hinton (Melissa), Phil Hinton (Barb), Elaine Schwartz (Ron), Jerry Hinton (Melanie), Roger Hinton (Karen), Joyce Twombly (Earl), and Brian Hinton.  He also two brothers-in-law:  Stan Albee (Julie), and Steve Albee (Mary).

Cremation is planned with a private family service at Hiawatha Cemetery at a later date.

George Edward Eisiminger, 78, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the Wathena Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center.  
George was born on January 19, 1948 in Wathena, Kansas to Thomas Henry and Maude Jane (Risner) Eisiminger.  He was the youngest of eight children.  After graduating from Emporia State College, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1969, serving for four years.  After returning home, George enjoyed a career of multiple roles spanning decades, to include a fire fighter, a chemist, a munitions inspector, and a substitute teacher.  
George loved the written word.  He enjoyed writing, submitting pieces to the (then) Wathena Times.  He was a history buff with a particular interest in military battles.  George and his mom had a gift for memorizing significant poems and quoting them at family gatherings - at just the right moment.  And he enjoyed the old hymns and was known to sing a verse or two if the mood was right.
He had a deep affection for his dogs and bird hunting.  In retirement, he enjoyed a weekly routine of taking bananas (or any ripe fruit) to friends, family and the nursing home, giving him a chance to visit.   George was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Wathena American Legion Post #161, serving as a Post Commander.    
George was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ted Eisiminger and John Eisiminger, and sisters Veta Miller and Mary Jane Miller.  He is survived by his siblings Eugene Eisiminger,  Dollie Noyes, and Jim Eisiminger, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and a lifetime of very good friends.

Harold Louis Schrick, 87, of Winchester, passed away September 20, 2026, in Lawrence, Kansas.

Harold was born at home in Mooney Creek, Kansas, on February 17, 1939, the son of Louis and Lillian (Noll) Schrick. He was a 1957 graduate of Maur Hill High School in Atchison, Kansas. He served in the Army National Guard Infantry from 1956 to 1962.

From 1961 to 1965, Harold worked as a guard at the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing. He later helped build the Cargill grain elevator in Atchison before making his living doing what would become a lifelong passion—farming. His roots ran deep in the Mooney Creek community, where he spent his life working the land and raising his family.

Harold was a man of strong faith, goodwill, and character. True to his word, he was always willing to share a little wisdom along the way. He was a lifelong member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, where he served nine years as president of the Parish Council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, attained the 4th Degree, and served as Grand Knight of the Mooney Creek Council.

Harold married Virginia “Ginger” Navinskey on February 14, 1961, in Atchison, Kansas. Together, they shared more than 65 years of marriage and built a life centered around family. Harold especially treasured watching their family grow through the generations.

As devoted as Harold was to farming, there were few things that could pull him away from tending the fields, but he always made time for school events and ballgames involving his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Ginger survives at the home. Harold is also survived by four daughters: Kim Britt of Linwood, Kansas; Denise (Rickey) Essman of Nortonville, Kansas; Michelle (Ed) Seichepine of Winchester, Kansas; and Lesley (Chris) Huston of Lecompton, Kansas; one brother, Dennis (Loretta) Schrick of Winchester, Kansas; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Lillian Schrick, and two sons-in-law, Dave Britt and Allen Locklin.

The Rosary will begin at 3:00 p.m. with visitation to follow from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Barnett Family Funeral Home in Oskaloosa, Kansas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2026, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 18760 Rogers Road, Atchison, Kansas. Burial will follow at Mooney Creek Cemetery.

Sharon U. (Owings) Dettmann, 79, of rural Humboldt, Nebraska was born on October 22, 1946, in Auburn, Nebraska to Edgar and Gleola U. (Ginn) Owings.  She attended Muddy Center country school until the 5th grade, then Stella public school.  Sharon graduated from Stella High School with the class of 1964.  She then continued her education at the Lincoln School of Commerce and worked for three years in Lincoln at the State Capital.  On January 7, 1968, Sharon was united in marriage to Weldon Dettmann.  To this union two sons, Rick (1968) and Rod (1970), were born.  Sharon managed the families pig farm operation with Weldon from 1974 until 1987.  She then worked at Cooper Nuclear until her retirement in 2006.

Sharon passed away on Monday, September 21, 2026, at her home in rural Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of seventy-nine years, ten months, and thirty days.  She is preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law Clifford and Nora (White) Dettmann, infant brother Ronnie Owings, grandson Dakota Dettmann, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Left to remember Sharon is her husband of 58 years Weldon Dettmann of rural Humboldt, NE; sons: Rick Dettmann and his wife Donna of Osceola, MO; Rod Dettmann and his wife Chris of rural Humboldt, NE; brother Jim Owings of Stella, NE; 5 granddaughters; 3 great-grandsons & 1 great-granddaughter;  brother-in-law Wayne Dettmann of Bern, KS; sisters-in-law: Mildred Beethe of Louisville, NE; Norma Kay Schutte of Lincoln, NE; Doris Jean Shafer and husband Wayne of Stella, NE; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street in Humboldt, Nebraska with Wayne Shafer officiating.  Inurnment will be at the Verdon Cemetery in Verdon, Nebraska at a later date.

Chloe Schock, 25, of Falls City, NE, passed away September 22, 2026 at Falls City. She was born January 19, 2001 at Falls City to Jason and Alicia (Lemerond) Schock.

Chloe was raised in Falls City and graduated from Falls City Sacred Heart in 2019. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 2023 with a Journalism degree, where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She became employed by the Kansas City Royals working in ticket sales following graduation. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Chloe is survived by her parents, Jason and Alicia of Falls City, sisters, Emma and Evi Schock of Falls City, grandmother, Debbie Lemerond of Falls City, grandfather, Rick Lemerond of Rulo, aunts and uncles, Amy and Dave Meinzer of Omaha, Rachel and Ryan Baumert of Lincoln, Brian and Jessie Lemerond of Falls City, Abby and Austin Merz of Falls City, cousins, Ellie, Isaac and Eli Baumert, Brenden, Bailey, Mia and Joey Lemerond, Molly, Charlie and Mason Merz. Beverly Ann Willis, 80 passed into eternal rest with the Lord on September 4, 2026 at Plaza West in Topeka, Kansas. Beverly was born on November 2, 1945, in Horton, Kansas. Her parents were James and Justine Willis (Compton) of Willis Kansas. Beverly attended elementary and high school in Willis, where she graduated in 1963. She then graduated from Highland Juco in 1965 and Emporia State Teachers College in 1967. She later received her Master of Mathematics degree from Emporia State.

She began her teaching career in Linwood, Kansas, teaching high school math. She then started the remainder of her teaching years in Independence, Kansas. She was a sponsor of Kayettes, an organization for Kansas high school girls, and spent several summers helping with camps at Rock Springs Ranch. She assisted with many of the sporting events at the high school and thoroughly enjoyed volunteering for the annual Neewollah celebration each October in Independence.

Some of her senior class and former students affectionately called her B. Willie because her signature was apparently too hard to decipher. She enjoyed traveling and accompanied several school classes on trips to Mexico and Canada. She taught in Independence until her retirement. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Independence, Kansas.

She enjoyed playing bridge with a group of friends in Independence and was always a willing volunteer for community, school and church events.

She relocated to Topeka, Kansas to be closer to her family members, especially her mother, becoming a wonderful caregiver when needed. She became a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and volunteered through the church to tutor children needing help with math. She also volunteered at the Topeka Performing Arts Center for many years. Beverly had a kind soul, whose generosity extended far beyond her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in law Dwayne Burlison. She is survived by her brothers; Stan (Terry) Willis, of Eldorado, Kansas, Marty (Eva) Willis of Topeka, Kansas and Bob (Debbie) Willis of Topeka, Kansas and sister Patty Burlison of Valrico, Florida. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews.

Martha Samalita Butler, 75, Oskaloosa, formerly Topeka, died Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Tonganoxie Terrace Skilled Nursing, Tonganoxie, KS. She was born July 13, 1951 in Cherokee, IA, the daughter of Merlin Samuel and Margaret Anna (Riley) Butler.

Martha was a 1969 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. She received her LPN at Atchison VoTech School in Atchison, KS. She studied for 3 years at Stormont-Vail Nurses Training and later went back to school to get her RN, before completing another 10 years at Stormont-Vail. Following that, she worked in nursing homes, and later in life she became a traveling nurse.

Martha is survived by a sister, Marjorie (Roy) Heston, Oskaloosa; nephew, Duane Barnes, Lawrence; niece, Danna (Sam) Todd, Tonganoxie; great-nephew, Tristan Todd, Tonganoxie; and dear friend, Genell (John) Cornett, Topeka. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Margaret “Juanita” Butler.

Funeral Service will be at Barnett Funeral Home, Oskaloosa, KS, on Monday, September 28, 2026 at 11:00 AM, with a visitation one hour before at 10:00 AM. Alyssa Jane Mullins, 18, of Onaga, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident near St. Marys.

She was born February 18, 2008 in Topeka, the daughter of Travis Mullins and Courtney Place.  She graduated from Jackson Heights High School this May, and had received her CNA certification from Washburn University when she was a Junior in high school.

Alyssa had worked at Homestead Assisted Living in Holton (formerly Vintage Park) and most recently at the Rossville Health and Rehabilitation Center. She enjoyed her job and working with the residents. Alyssa especially loved spending time with family.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Holton and FCCLA.  She played volleyball in high school and enjoyed power lifting.  Her two favorite teachers in school were Mr. Childs and Mrs. Cormier.

Alyssa was preceded in death by her mother Courtney.

Survivors include her fiancé, Kean Haverkamp, of the home, her father, Travis Mullins, Netawaka, her brother, Justin Mullins (Sarah) and their son, Oliver Mullins, Silver Lake, her sister, Abigail Mullins, Netawaka, and her grandparents, Pamela Ward, Holton and Everett and Fredericka Mullins, Netawaka.

Evelyn R. Lierz, 80, of Fairview, Kansas, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2026, at her home.

Evelyn was born on August 2, 1946, at her grandparents' home on their farm near Lillis, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond J. and Beatrice (Nolte) Skoch. Evelyn was the third child in the family, with two older siblings, Leroy and Donna, and two younger siblings, Gene and Rebecca. Her family moved to the Brown County Skoch Farm near Powhattan, Kansas, in 1947, shortly after Evelyn was born.

Evelyn attended all twelve years of school at Powhattan Public School. She was a majorette for the school band and graduated from Powhattan in 1964. After graduation, she worked at the Farm Service Agency, which was then known as the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.

On April 16, 1966, Evelyn married Larry Lee Lierz of Sabetha, Kansas, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Fidelity, Kansas, located seven and ½ miles south of Sabetha. Larry and Evelyn had six children, Rodney, Terry, Kevin, Cherie, Darin, and Lane.

Evelyn served as secretary, vice president, and treasurer of the Powhattan Alumni Association. She also served as vice president and secretary of the St. Augustine Catholic Church Altar Society and served on the church's finance council. For nine years, Evelyn was an advisor for the Farm Service Agency. Evelyn was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church, West Side Social Club, and Classmates Club.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Skoch, on December 6, 1991, and Beatrice Skoch, on February 6, 2012; her husband, Larry, on March 19, 2020; her nephew and godchild, Brad Beer, on March 7, 2001; and her brother-in-law, Larry Beer, on September 10, 2018.

Evelyn is survived by her six children, Rodney Lierz, Terry (Lisa) Lierz, Kevin Lierz, Cherie (Chris) Grimm, Darin Lierz, and Lane (Cassie) Lierz; her 19 grandchildren, Ryan (Clarissa) Lierz, Brandon Lierz, Kyle Grimm, Gwendolyn (Emma) Ruby, Sarah Lierz, Heidi Lierz, Andrew Lierz (and fiancé Kate Adams), Kaleb Grimm, Megan Lierz, Katelyn Lierz, Darcy Lierz, Matthew Lierz, Conner Lierz, Jacob Grimm, Joshua Grimm, Wyatt Lierz, Laura Lierz, Carson Lierz, and Rosalee Lierz; her two great-grandchildren, Arthur Lierz and EverLeigh Adams; her brother, Leroy (Janice) Skoch; her sister, Donna Beer (Jim Sanders); her brother, Gene (Judy) Skoch; her sister, Rebecca Skoch; and her many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn will lie in state at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha, Kansas, from Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. until Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. Evelyn will then be moved to the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Fidelity, Kansas (1948 Acorn Road, Sabetha, Kansas), for a rosary and visitation. A rosary will be prayed on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., with visitation following from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church.

Maxine C. Carey Buchanan, 89, of Atchison, Kansas, completed her earthly journey peacefully on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Twin Oaks Assisted Living Facility in Lansing, Kansas, after being blessed with nearly 90 years of life.

Maxine was born September 25, 1936, in Atchison, Kansas, to Ruth Ross Carey and David Carey. Her life was marked by devotion to family, enduring warmth and the quiet strength of a woman who found joy in simple pleasures and cherished company.

She began her education at Lincoln School in Atchison, where she attended through the eighth grade, and later graduated from Atchison High School. During her younger years, Maxine was active in sports and especially enjoyed playing softball and basketball. Her love of sports continued throughout her life, whether watching games or attending them in person. She also enjoyed reading and “watching her stories,” familiar pastimes that brought comfort and enjoyment to her days.

A woman with a strong work ethic and a heart for serving others, Maxine began her working years in housekeeping and later worked as a nurse aide at Atchison Hospital. She went on to serve as a teacher’s assistant at Martin West Grade School and as a secretary at Cardox Chemetron Corporation. She later returned to Atchison Hospital, working as a nurse aide at Cray Senior Manor. Maxine eventually joined the staff of Mount St. Scholastica Academy, where she served as a dormitory prefect until her retirement. Throughout her working years, she formed lasting friendships that she treasured for the rest of her life.

Maxine never seemed to meet a stranger. A simple trip to the grocery store could easily turn into a social occasion, as she was sure to run into someone she knew and stop for a conversation. She was classy, well put together and took pride in her appearance. She rarely went anywhere without her purse, and inside you could always find a comb — because Maxine was not about to go anywhere “looking a mess.” It was a small detail that captured so much of who she was: a woman who carried herself with grace, enjoyed the company of others and always wanted to put her best foot forward.

Maxine was first married to Millard Allen Sr., who preceded her in death in 1970. She later met Henry Buchanan Sr., and the two were united in marriage on October 30, 1976. Together, they shared nearly 50 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, companionship and faith. Their marriage was a testament not only to their love for one another but, more importantly, to their love for God. Their devotion was evident in the way they cared for one another through every season of life — Maxine cared for Henry, and Henry cared for Maxine. He continues to reside in the home he built for their family.

Above all else, Maxine’s greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was her family. At one point in her life, she devoted herself to being a stay-at-home mother, caring for her son and granddaughter. She treasured the time she shared with those she loved, and family remained at the center of her heart throughout her life.

For Maxine, family was not defined by blood alone, but also by the love and bonds formed along the way. She was blessed with Harold Crittendon, whom she loved as a son, and Clydette Buchanan and Pam Lewis, whom she loved as daughters. All three lovingly helped care for Maxine and held a special place in her heart. She also shared a special bond with her cousin, Victor Fields, who became like a grandson to her.

In addition to her husband, Maxine is survived by her children, Janet Smith (Gary), Millard Allen, Karla Allen, Steven Allen and Clay Buchanan Jr. (Angela); her grandchildren, Summer Allen Woode, Gary Smith Jr. (Madeline) and Aaliyah Buchanan; her great-grandchildren, D.J. Woode, Secret Woode (Alyssa), Shonte’ Bean (Felix), Norah Smith and Lylah Smith; and her great-great-grandchildren, Charlotte Woode and Karma Thomas.

She is also survived by her sisters, Marilyn Heard (Tom) and Carolyn Carey (David); her brothers, William “Giggles” Vaughn and Robert Carey (Sheila); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends who will remember her with love and affection.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Robert Earl Allen; her daughter, Dee Ann Buchanan; and her siblings, David Carey Jr., Earl “Tank” Carey, John Carey, Bill Carey, Naomi Baker and Ruth “Pam” Briscoe.

Robert C. Handke, age 99, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 18, 2026, at Atchison Medicalodge.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church. A rosary will be held Friday, September 25, at 5:30 p.m., with a visitation to follow from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Robert was born on January 13, 1927, to Edward Handke and Emma (Spear) Handke. He attended Atchison County Community Schools and graduated in 1945. While in high school, due to the shortage of adult men during WWII, Bob became one of the student bus drivers during his junior and senior years. The only requirements were to have a chauffeur’s license, be of good character, and live at the end of the route.

On June 6, 1949, he married Frances Navinskey. One of his most important roles in life was being a loving husband, and he cherished every moment of their more than 76 years together until Frances passed before him on February 22, 2026.

Robert was a farmer, a machinist for over twenty years, and an over-the-road semi driver for twenty-two years. His true passion for custom harvesting began in 1946 when he was part of Felix Ernzens Custom Harvesting crew. Ernzen had purchased the first self-propelled combine in Atchison County, a Massey Harris 21A, which sparked Bob’s love for custom harvesting.

From there, Bob, Frances, and his children traveled across the United States from May to September each year with their custom harvesting business. At one point, their operation included a crew of 19 and six combines. For over 50 years, custom harvesting became not only Bob’s livelihood, but a way of life for his family.

At the age of 16, he learned to fly from Pete Bailey. He acquired his private pilot’s license in 1956 and purchased the first of many planes in 1957. The stories and memories he made while flying are never-ending, and he always made sure to share his love of flying with everyone.
Robert was hardworking and determined throughout his life, with a stubborn streak that those who knew him well came to know and love. He loved having the opportunity to teach his children and grandchildren life lessons throughout his long, blessed life. His life was filled with hard work, adventure, family, and memories that will continue to be shared for generations.

He is survived by his children, Gary Handke, Wayne (Terri) Handke, Robert James Handke, Glen (Jennie) Handke, Phil Handke, Peggy (Ron) Lutz and Karen (Nelson) Birkinsha; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughters-in-law, Kathy Handke and Angela Handke; sisters, Adella Handke, Erma Bolick, June Kautz and Frances Williamson; and brother, James Handke.

David Lawrence Ferrell, 68, of rural Mayetta, Kansas, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born October 10, 1957, in Holton, Kansas, the son of Claude V. and Esther L. (Miller) Ferrell. He graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1975. David was raised in the First Christian Church of Valley Falls and was a man of strong faith, studying the bible throughout his life.

The youngest of seven children, David was raised on a Grade A dairy farm where he developed a lifelong love and respect for animals. He was most at home in nature, enjoying quiet evenings by the fire listening to music with his family. A gifted craftsman and journeyman Mason, David had the rare ability to build or restore virtually anything, with a passion for breathing new life into vintage items such as historic buildings, tools, furniture, and statues.

David married Deborah Counter on March 31, 1992 in Eureka Springs, AR. Celebrating over 34 years of marriage and more than 41 years together. Above all, he was a deeply devoted and loving husband, father, and Papa.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Esther; two sisters, Claudette Ferrell Blevins and Mary Louise Wyckoff; and one brother, Clifford Ferrell.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah; daughter, Ellen Hutcheson (Mike); sister, Shirley Ferrell; brothers, Al Ferrell (Barb) and Bernard Ferrell (Sylvia); sister-in-law, Karen Ferrell; three grandchildren, Cooper, Brady, and Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2026, at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, KS. Visitation will begin prior at 10:00 a.m.

Margaret A. “Peggy” Olberding, 98, of Seneca, Kansas, died Thursday evening, September 17, 2026, at Life Care Center in Seneca, where she had been a resident.

Peggy was born on October 4, 1927, north of St. Benedict, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph A. and Helen M. Stuke Haug. She attended St. Mary’s School in St. Benedict and graduated from high school in 1945. Following high school, Peggy helped her parents on the family farm until her marriage.

On November 17, 1947, she married Victor E. Olberding at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. They made their home in Seneca, where Peggy devoted herself to raising their three children, Linda, Keith, and Darrell. She later worked at Harsh Drug Store for several years and then managed Paramount Cleaners in Seneca for a number of years until it was sold.

Peggy was a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was also a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society. She was a homemaker at heart and was known as a cheerful and thoughtful person who cared deeply for her family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and treasured the time they shared together.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor, on August 28, 2008; a daughter, Linda Cronin, on September 25, 1990; and her parents, a daughter-in-Law Jackie Olberding on December 31, 2014

Peggy is survived by her two sons, Keith of Seneca and Darrell of Overland Park; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be prayed at 10:30 A.M. Monday, September 21, 2026, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

Carroll Joseph Wichman, 79, of Marysville, Kansas, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Marysville Community Memorial Hospital in Marysville, Kansas.

Carroll was born on October 21, 1946, in Seneca, Kansas, the son of Walter and Frances (Boeckman) Wichman. He grew up north of Seneca and during the summers while in high school, he enjoyed working with his Uncle Raymond during the summer harvest. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, graduating in 1964.

Following high school, Carroll was enlisted in the United States Air Force. He entered the service in 1964 and was stationed in Japan, for a year. On June 1, 1966, Carroll married Sharon L. Monohan at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Shortly after their wedding, they left for his next assignment in the Air Force. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1968 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Carroll worked on a ranch with his brother, Bob. He later began a long career as an over-the-road truck driver with Jack Cooper Transport Company, hauling automobiles throughout the United States. After Jack Cooper was sold, Carroll continued his trucking career with Hadley Transport Company until his retirement in 2006.

Carroll moved to Weatherford, Texas, where he enjoyed the freedom and open road from the seat of his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. He took great pride in keeping his truck and motorcycle exceptionally clean and well cared for. His love for his dogs was just as strong, and they were truly like children to him. Over the years, Grace, Jake, Romo, and Tiger were very special parts of his life.

In 2016, Carroll and Sharon returned to Kansas and made their home in Marysville. Although he was happy to be back in Kansas, a part of Carroll's heart always remained in Texas, where he had spent so many years and made many memories.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Frances Wichman; and his nephews Howery and Kevin Camp.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of the home in Marysville; his son, Jeff Wichman and wife Karen of Irving, Texas; his brother, Robert Wichman of Seneca; his sisters, Patty Howery and husband Bill of Poteau, Oklahoma, Glenda Sowder and husband Harry of Heavener, Oklahoma, Diana Camp of Mukilteo, Washington, and Ruth (Robert) Bergmann of Lillis, Kansas; two grandchildren, Brandon and Amanda; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Carroll will be remembered for his love of the open road, his pride in keeping his vehicles in immaculate condition, his devotion to his dogs, and the many miles and memories he made throughout his life.

A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

James “Jim” Leander Cashman, 77, of Whiting, Kansas, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2026, at his home in Whiting, KS. He was born January 24, 1949, in Horton, Kansas, the son of Leander Orland and Catherine Rose (Poston) Cashman. Jim graduated from Whiting High School in 1968.

Jim worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for Scheid Construction for many years before owning and operating his own trucking company, Cashman Trucking, for more than 40 years. He retired in 2020, but retirement did not keep Jim from staying busy. He continued driving a truck and helping with the local harvest, doing what he enjoyed and staying connected to the work he knew so well.

Jim had a lifelong love of motorcycles and enjoyed tractor drives, swap meets, rebuilding and repairing cars, and just about any opportunity to tinker. He had a remarkable understanding of how things worked and operated, and he took great personal satisfaction in figuring out how to fix them. Whether it was a truck, tractor, car, or something around the house, Jim was always willing to take a look and see what he could do. His curiosity, mechanical ability, and willingness to lend a hand were a big part of who he was.

Jim was united in marriage to Darlene Sue Dillner on December 28, 2015, in Kansas City, Missouri. Together, they made their home in Whiting.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Leander and Mary Katherine Cashman.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of the home; his son, David James Cashman (Jennifer) of Topeka, Kansas; step-sons, T.J. Nelson (Deanna) of Garnett, Kansas, Paul Nelson of Topeka, Kansas, and James Nelson of Abilene, Kansas; 13 step-grandchildren, Jonathan Nelson (Cheynne), Fred Nelson, Natalie Nelson, Harley Nelson, Charlie Nelson, Reynah Smith, Leo Duncan, Darlene Nelson, Madyson Nelson, Tristan Nelson, Owen Nelson, Sophie Nelson, and Everly Nelson; and two grandchildren, Adyson and Taitum Cashman.

Jim will be remembered for his hardworking nature, mechanical know-how, love of the open road, and the simple satisfaction he found in fixing things and helping others. His willingness to keep busy, his enjoyment of the things he loved, and the time he shared with his family will be fondly remembered by those who knew him.

Patricia Ann Schoenfelder Meers, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away September 18, 2026 at The Willow in Wathena, KS. Pat was born on January 20, 1938, in her family home in Troy, Kansas, to Francis and Elizabeth
Schoenfelder.
On November 22, 1958, Pat married the love of her life, Charles R. Meers, at St. Charles
Catholic Church in Troy, Kansas. Together they built a beautiful life centered around family, faith, friendship, and countless treasured memories.
Pat and Charlie were blessed with four children: Ronald (Terri) of The Villages, FL; Donald
(Cindi) of St. Joseph, Randal (Nancy) of Wathena; and Cindy (Curtis) Richardson of St. Joseph. Her family was the greatest joy of her life and she took immense pride in each of them. She leaves behind seven beloved grandchildren: Rhiannon Meers, Abbie Meers, Sydney Meers, Whitney Meers, Jake (Baylee) Meers, Anna (Jake) Anderson, and Claire Richardson, along with five great-grandchildren who brought her immeasurable happiness. Three brothers remain of her siblings: Larry (Donna) Schoenfelder; Junior (Donna) Schoenfelder, and Dewayne (Mona) Schoenfelder. She was blessed by many special nieces and nephews who always took time for personal visits.
After graduating from Troy High School in 1955 and Gard’s Business University in St. Joseph, Pat moved to Denver, Colorado for a short time before returning home to Kansas to begin her life with Charlie.
Pat devoted the majority of her life to her family as a loving homemaker and stay-at-home
mother. She was the heart of her home, giving generously of herself and supporting her
husband and children in every way imaginable. Her family always knew they could count on her love, strength, and unwavering support.
Pat and Charlie shared a wonderful life filled with adventure. Before Charlie’s passing in 2020, the two traveled to all fifty states, exploring the beauty of their country together, as well as traveling abroad. They especially enjoyed boating, spending many happy days on the Missouri River. Through their time on the water, they formed deep and lasting friendships with people who became an important part of their lives. Those friendships, like so many of Pat and Charlie’s memories, remained dear to her throughout the years. Pat’s faith was an important part of her life. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Wathena and served as a member of the St. Ann Alter Society.
In addition to her beloved husband, Charlie, Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Elizabeth Schoenfelder; her brothers, LaMonte and Francis “Bud” Schoenfelder; and her sisters, Betty Lou Schoenfelder and Edna Miller.
Pat’s greatest legacy was not found in the places she traveled or the businesses she helped
build, but in the love she gave her family. She was a woman who found meaning in the simple, precious things - raising her children, sharing time with Charlie, watching her family grow, gathering with friends, and making memories that would last a lifetime.
To her children, she was a steady source of love and encouragement. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was a treasured grandmother whose love will continue to be felt in the stories they share and the memories they hold close. And to those who knew her as a friend, she was someone whose presence made life a little warmer and whose friendship was meant to be cherished. Pat will be greatly missed, but she will never be forgotten. Her love lives on in her family, her friendships, and the beautiful memories she leaves behind. Her life was a gift, her love was a blessing, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

enjoying the companionship of dear friends.

Francis “Frank” Irving Gray Jr., 82, of Circleville, KS, passed away Friday, September 18, 2026 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. He was born December 18, 1943 in Kansas City, MO, the son of Francis Irving Gray Sr. and Marie Charlotte (Space) Gray. 

Frank graduated from Shawnee Mission High School. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1962-1965.

He retired from Goodyear Tire Company in the Radial Final Finish Set-Up Department.  He had also worked for the Nemaha County Sheriff’s Department.

Frank was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1367, Americal Legion Post 44, Honor Guard of Holton and Circleville Masonic Lodge #20.

He married Theresa “Terri” Mary Ramos on July 14, 2021 in Colorado. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, Shelby Gray Hahn (Mike) of Branson West, MO, Windy Gray Cummings (Clayton) of Wellsville, KS, Skye Gray Starner (Eric) of Greeley, CO, Ashley Gray Edwards (Kyle) of Topeka, KS, Kayla Gray Brucken (Chad) of Topeka, KS, Rhonda Brooker (Robert) of Joliet, IL, Jennifer Lakatos (Jeff) of Spring, TX and Tracy Anderson of Maple Hill, KS; sisters, Francille Bauer of Gardner, KS and Marilyn Kribs of Beaverton, OR; 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Marie Gray; daughter, Whisper Gray; brother, Roger Gray; sister, Barbara Sandridge and granddaughter, Ryeail Rees.

Cecil E. Faller, 95, of Falls City, NE, passed away September 16, 2026 at Omaha, NE. He was born March 19, 1931 northeast of Falls City to Gilbert and Alma (Krause) Faller.

Cecil enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 3, 1951 at Omaha, NE. He was stationed at Burtonwood Air Force Base in England for three years and earned a National Defense Medal. He was honorably discharged on January 16, 1954 at Camp Kilmer, NJ.

He married Donna Preusse on May 9, 1954 at Falls City, she passed away on November 6, 2021.

Cecil was raised on a farm where he resided most of his life and in a house he and his father built. The farm has been in the family for 150 years. He graduated from Falls City High School in 1948 and then started working for neighbors doing farm labor and worked in the oil fields until entering the U. S. Air Force. Following his discharge, he returned to Falls City and farmed until moving into Falls City in 2016 and to Omaha in 2021. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 20th and Towle Street. He enjoyed helping at the funeral home where his wife worked for many years, making homemade apple sauce and visiting with the men at church and Merz Farm Equipment.

Cecil is survived by his children, Brad and his wife Regina of Falls City, Nancy Niedfeldt and her husband Dave of Beatrice, brother, Gerald of Omaha, grandchildren, Ryan Ross, Jordan & Logan Faller, Austin Niedfeldt and Emily Vanover, great-grandchildren, Kaden Ross, Carter and Ellie Faller, Nolan Faller, Greyson, Madison and Wallen Niedfeldt, Beckett and Morgan Vanover. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Robert, Sterling and Vernal, and a sister, Arlene in infancy.

His funeral will be held on Monday, September 21, 2026 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 20th and Towle St., with Pastor Joanna Kathol officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Viewing will begin on Saturday afternoon until 5:00 PM and on Sunday from noon to 5:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

Delores M. Ryser Vertin, 95, of Wathena passed away Sept. 12, 2026. She was born Sept. 5, 1931 in Haddam Ks, the daughter of Nevin and Mildred Weber Ryser.

The family moved to Wathena in 1943. She attended Bellemont one-room schoolhouse north of Wathena and graduated from Wathena High School in 1949.

Delores attended Gard Business University in St. Joseph and worked at Swift & Co. as a stenographer and part-time switch board operator. Later she worked at Fleek's Market in Blair and The Kansas Chief newspaper in Wathena.

On Nov. 18, 1950, Delores married Leo Vertin at St. Joseph Catholic Church rectory in Wathena. He preceded her in death on April 6, 2014. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Coursen, on Jan. 29, 2026, son-in-law Jerry Root in 2012, her parents and brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Rosie Vertin Ryser.

Delores was baptized and joined St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wathena on Sept. 23, 1956. A devout Catholic she was a member of St. Ann's Altar Society and had served as a sacristan, greeter and eucharistic minister for 30 years.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family. Delores volunteered at the Wathena Keen-Age Center and served as treasurer of the site council. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing and playing cards at the senior center.

She is survived by 7 children: Pam (Rick) Boyd, Paula (Larry) Bahr all of St. Joseph; Kevin (Lori) Vertin and Karla Root of Wathena; Alan (Trudy) Vertin of Platte City, Mo; Rich (Linda) Vertin of Troy; Brent (Brenda) Vertin of Westminster, Co; 15 grandchildren: Nicholas Boyd, Ben (Amanda) Coursen, Damian (Courtney) Bahr, Shanin (Brandon) Frazee, Eric (Bridget) Bahr, Michelle (Scott) Ide, Christie (Skyler) Barron, Sandy (Christopher) Koehler, Kalee Feek, Blaise Vertin, Karlee Vertin, Brian (Alicja) Gaul, Brett (Megan) Gaul, Alexa Vertin and Kyle Vertin; 5 step grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

Kenny Ray Jerome, 65, of Circleville, Kansas, passed away at his home on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
He was born April 8, 1961, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Kenneth Raymond and Rose Lee (Richard) Jerome. Kenny graduated from Jackson Heights High School in 1979.
On November 16, 1990, Kenny was united in marriage to Delpha “Lynn” Edwards in Oskaloosa, Kansas. They shared more than 32 years of marriage before Lynn passed away on October 7, 2023.
Kenny owned and operated Jerome’s Liquor Store with his wife, Lynn, for more than 22 years.
Kenny enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his dogs. He took great joy in telling everyone how to do things—even if he was wrong. Most of all, Kenny loved giving his family and friends plenty of “grief.” His humor, teasing, and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Kenny is survived by his sister, Annetta Browning of Circleville, KS; nephews, Denny Browning (Patricia) of Bushton, KS, and Matt Browning (Lisa) of Circleville, KS; niece, Rochelle Browning of Circleville, KS; step-son, Terry Nichols (Debbie) of Valley Falls, KS; 2 aunts, Helen Slattery and Della Steinlage both of Topeka, KS; uncle Dean Jerome (Brenda) of Roeland Park, KS; great-nieces and great-nephews, Deanna, Drayton Browning, Keaton DeWalt (Kendall), Alex Browning (Annie), Talen Browning, Brody Browning, Colten Browning, and Karma Carlson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Rose; his wife, Lynn; great-niece, Heather S. Browning; and step-son, Travis Nichols.
Memorial visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, Kansas, where family will greet friends.

Michael A. Hussey, 56, of Tecumseh, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 12, 2026, when his heart stopped while he was camping with his family at the old Sabetha Lake. His sudden passing leaves behind a loving family and many friends who will remember him for his easy smile, his twinkling eyes, and the genuine love he had for those closest to him.

Mike was born on June 13, 1970, in Madras, Oregon, the son of Emmett and Charlene (Jackson) Hussey. He grew up in Madras and attended Madras High School. At the age of 21, Mike began his career in trucking, a profession that would become an important part of his life. He spent many years as an over-the-road truck driver before transitioning to local trucking during the last two years.

On May 10, 2014, Mike married Corren Mitchell in Plainville, Kansas. Corren was the love of his life, and he made it his mission to be the man she needed. He loved spoiling her, making her happy, and taking care of her in every way he could. Ten years later, on May 10, 2024, they renewed their vows in Las Vegas, celebrating not only their anniversary but the love and commitment they shared.

Mike embraced Corren's children as his own. Travis, Gavin, and Desiree were not his stepchildren—they were his kids, and he loved them fiercely. He was proud of them and was always there for them. His grandchildren also held a very special place in his heart, and he treasured the time he spent with them.

Those who knew Mike will remember a man who had a warm and genuine personality that made people feel welcome. He loved the outdoors, camping, enjoying the fresh air, and spending time with the people he loved. At his heart, Mike was a family man who found his greatest happiness in being with Corren and the family he loved so deeply.

He is survived by his wife, Corren Hussey of Tecumseh, Nebraska; his children, Travis Garner and Gavin Garner of Seneca, and Desiree (Weston) Hubbard of Marysville; his grandchildren, Domineek, Aadyn, and Zoa Garner all of Seneca; two brothers, Steven (Misty) Hussey of Terrebonne, Oregon; and Jeff Hussey of Bend, Oregan; his parents-in-law, Bill and Ramona Mitchell of Pawnee, Nebraska; three sisters-in-law; and “uncle monkey” to several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, Kansas, on Thursday, September 17, 2026 from 6- 8 PM. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Floyd I. Winkel, 97, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Blair, Kansas passed away Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Floyd was born on November 15, 1928, in Cawker City, Kansas, to Peter and Elsie Myrtle (Van Wey) Winkel.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Elwood, Kansas. He loved his wife of 66 years, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but most of all he loved God. Floyd served in the U.S army during 1953 -1955 during the Germany reconstruction period. Floyd worked for Armour & Company meat packing plant, retiring there. He then worked for Woodruff Lumber Company, and Fleek’s Market. Floyd loved working in his garden, he was a master gardener. He also took great pride in keeping his home and lawn, in pristine condition.

Floyd married Merlene Pelham on October 11, 1953, in St. Joseph, Missouri. She preceded him in death on August 14, 2020. He was also preceded in death by his parents, siblings, infant sister, Alice Louise Winkel, Geneva Wright Lindsey, Don Winkel, and Olive Pickerell Nadler.

William “Willie” Thomas Broome Sr., 69, of Fairview, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at his home, surrounded by love.

Willie was born on July 29th, 1957, to Thomas Lee and Billie Dee (Edmondson) Broome in Kermit, Texas. He was the youngest of five children.

Raised in West Texas, he dedicated his career and life’s work to the oilfield during the 1970s and 1980s. After relocating to Kansas in the early 1990s, he dedicated the next three decades to repairing heavy farm equipment, small engines, and vehicles before retiring. While driving his tire truck, he was often recognized over the CB radio for his distinctive Southern drawl, a hallmark of his Texas upbringing. He demonstrated a strong aptitude for mechanical repairs and was known for his ability to fix nearly anything. He loved to tinker in his garage on various pieces of lawn maintenance equipment and could often be found working on his scooter, aka his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Willie was also a passionate cook. His greatest joy was spending days preparing food and barbecuing his renowned brisket, as he loved gathering family and friends together to share a meal. Whenever we impatiently asked when the food would be ready, he would simply reply, “It’s done when it’s done.” When he announced dinnertime, everyone came running. Willie always waited to eat until he was certain everyone else had been served and had eaten. He truly cooked with his heart for those he loved.

Willie was a wonderful and devoted father, always willing to do anything for his children. One phone call from one of them, he would drop everything, hop in his truck, and travel to their aid. The profound loss of his beloved son, William Thomas Broome Jr., in 1999 deeply affected him, and his heart never fully healed. We believe he has now found fulfillment in being reunited with Junior in the afterlife. In the days before his passing, he assured visiting family members that he was calm, content, and at peace, and that he was ready. He wasn’t scared. In his final days, he offered his family comfort with these words.

Willie also loved to fish. He would patiently wait for hours out on the lake in his little boat Momma bought him. Sometimes without even getting a bite, he still returned home happy and content. He loved taking his grandbabies fishing and teaching them everything he knew about one of his favorite pastimes. He passed that passion on to his grandbabies, who cherish the memories of going fishin’ with Papa.

Dad’s most profound connection was with the love of his life, Jane. Their love was unmatched, and they loved fiercely. They laughed and cried. They fought, and they made up. Their enduring love was truly unique. Through life’s ups and downs, they found time to dance, and anyone who witnessed that could feel the love and passion they shared. Together, they went the long haul, raised a family, and instilled in their children the same capacity to love fiercely. On September 11, 2026, they would have celebrated 41 years together.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved son, William Thomas Broome, Jr.; and his older brother, Teddy Joe Frie of Wink, Texas.

Willie is survived by his wife, Jane Hoskins of Fairview, Kansas; his four daughters, Billie (Brady) Pierce of Seattle, Washington, Jennifer (Matt) Herrmann of Sabetha, Kansas, Bobby Jo White of Ardmore, Oklahoma, and Jackie (Joseph) Aguirre of Fairview, Kansas; his two sisters, Nita Clements and Brenda Barron, both of Anderson, Texas; and his brother, Buddy Broome of Kermit, Texas; his eleven grandchildren; his many nieces and nephews; and countless family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. A private family Celebration of Life service will be held. Interment will be made in the Albany Cemetery, north of Sabetha.
