Colleen Kay Tyler, 71, of Horton, Kansas, passed away peacefully with her family nearby after a battle with Alzheimer’s at Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hiawatha, Kansas. Though the disease slowly took parts of her, the love she gave throughout her life remained strong and unforgettable.
She was born June 9, 1954, in Pomeroy, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert and Marge Cook Rost.
Colleen married her best friend, Howard Tyler, on Dec. 12, 1987, in Des Moines, Iowa, and together they built a life filled with love and loyalty. She was a devoted mother to Whitney Allbee and Ashley Lamey, and a proud grandmother to Olivia Lamey, Cedar Allbee, and Oakstan Allbee.
Colleen lived in Graf, Iowa, from 1988 to 2021, where she built her life with Howard and their two girls. She worked in insurance, ending her career at Tricor in Dubuque, and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2017. Howard and Colleen moved to Horton in 2021, and she spent her last days at Maple Heights in Hiawatha.
She worked hard throughout her life and was known for her reliability, tech-savvy abilities, and the care she showed to the people around her. What truly defined her was her gentle heart and the way she loved every living thing.
Animals were her constant companions and brought her endless comfort and joy. She loved her dogs as deeply as family, and they were an important part of her life.
Survivors include her husband, Howard, of Horton; two daughters, Whitney Allbee of Lancaster, Wisconsin, and Ashley (Josh) Lamey of Graf, Iowa; three grandchildren, Olivia Lamey, Cedar Allbee, and Oakstan Allbee; a sister, Cheryl Rossiter; and a brother, Dennis Rost. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jim Rost.
In honor of her memory, the family asks that gifts be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association and may be sent in care of Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton.
Due to the distance between family members, no services will be held at this time. Friends and loved ones are welcome to reach out to the family to share memories, stories, or words of remembrance. A special message may be sent to the family at www.dishon-maple-chaney.com.
