Deborah “Debbie” M. Rilinger, 73, of Morrill, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 15, 2026, surrounded by her family at her home in Morrill.
Debbie was born on May 17, 1953, in Sabetha, Kansas, to Leo B. Holthaus and Reva (Engelken) Holthaus. She was raised in Baileyville, Kansas, in a large Catholic family. She attended Baileyville schools and Sacred Heart Church. She met her future husband, Larry, in Baileyville.
Debbie married Lawrence (Larry) P. Rilinger on July 25, 1970, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They lived in Seneca, Kansas for the first few years of their married life and then moved to Baileyville. In 1978, they moved to Sabetha. The couple had three daughters, Amy, Paula, and April.
Debbie was an exceptional wife and mother; roles she devoted her entire life to. Debbie also did home day care for many years and loved and cared for all the children as if they were her own. Debbie cleaned houses for many years and took great pride in keeping a spotless home. She worked for Simpson Chiropractic for 22 years and retired in 2020.
Debbie’s greatest joy was having everyone at her home so she could cook for them. She loved spending time with her family, especially her four grandsons, Xander, Kaleb, Noah, and Mason. She was a devoted Christian and loved to share inspirational quotes and Bible verses. Debbie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha, a member of the church Altar Society, and served as the church’s Funeral Dinner Coordinator for many years. Serving others brought her happiness.
Debbie fought a 24-year battle with melanoma and breast cancer. She endured more surgeries and treatments than could be counted, and yet she never complained or gave up hope. She credited her long survival after her initial diagnosis in 2002 to the dedicated doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Despite all the pain and health challenges she endured, Debbie continued to serve others. She dedicated her life to helping anyone she could. She was a true good and faithful servant of Christ.
Debbie was extremely organized and always planned. She was well prepared for the day that the Lord called her home and left a handwritten message to share: “My greatest love is for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, my husband and my family. My greatest prayer is for each and every one of my family and friends to be saved by accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior so that we can ALL be together in heaven for eternity! I love every one of you so much! Please always stay in touch and love one another.”
Debbie was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Rilinger, on September 14, 2017; her parents, Leo Holthaus and Reva Holthaus; her sister, LeeAnn Kidney; her mother-in-law, Amy Rilinger; her father-in-law, Peter Rilinger; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Vernon and Rita Speers; and her brother-in-law, Lawrence “Sam” Shreffler.
